Disparate Degrees Of Hypervariable Loop Flexibility Control T Cell Receptor Cross-Reactivity, Specificity, And Binding Mechanism, Daniel R. Scott, Oleg Y. Borbulevych, Kurt H. Piepenbrink, Steven A. Corcelli, Brian M. Baker

Food for Health: Publications

αβ T cell receptors recognize multiple antigenic peptides bound and presented by major histocompatibility complex molecules. TCR cross-reactivity has been attributed in part to flexibility of the complementarity-determining region loops, yet there have been limited direct studies of loop dynamics to determine the extent of its role. Here we studied the flexibility of the binding loops of the αβ TCR A6 utilizing crystallographic, spectroscopic, and computational methods. A significant role for flexibility in binding and cross-reactivity was indicated only for the CDR3α and CDR3β hypervariable loops. Examination of the energy landscapes of these two loops indicated that CDR3β possesses a …

A Study Of Correlations Between The Definition And Application Of The Gene Ontology, Yuji Mo Dec 2011

A Study Of Correlations Between The Definition And Application Of The Gene Ontology, Yuji Mo

Department of Computer Electronics and Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

When using the Gene Ontology (GO), nucleotide and amino acid sequences are annotated by terms in a structured and controlled vocabulary organized into relational graphs. The usage of the vocabulary (GO terms) in the annotation of these sequences may diverge from the relations defined in the ontology. We measure the consistency of the use of GO terms by comparing GO's defined structure to the terms' application. To do this, we first use synthetic data with different characteristics to understand how these characteristics influence the correlation values determined by various similarity measures. Using these results as a baseline, we found that …

Battling Academic Corruption In Higher Education: Does External Quality Assurance (Eqa) Offer A Ray Of Hope?, Lazarus Nabaho, Wilberforce Turyasingura Dec 2011

Battling Academic Corruption In Higher Education: Does External Quality Assurance (Eqa) Offer A Ray Of Hope?, Lazarus Nabaho, Wilberforce Turyasingura

Higher Learning Research Communications

The post-1980s changes in the global higher education landscape have triggered a burgeoning of incidents of academic corruption in higher education institutions. Since 2000, the discourse on how to combat academic corruption has gained traction in higher education and quality assurance is advanced as one of the strategies for fighting corruption in higher education. In 2016, UNESCO (and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation) issued a “wakeup call” to quality assurance systems to take up a leading role in the battle against academic corruption. However, a dearth of empirical and conceptual studies on how the quality assurance systems, in general, …

River Stewards Orientation, Alexander Gaskins

Blog Archive: River Reflections at the University of Dayton

Earlier this year in August, the River Stewards embarked on their annual Orientation for the incoming River Stewards. Accompanied by community partners and other River Stewards, the group of paddlers made their way down a 17 mile stretch ending on the Great Miami River near Sun Watch Indian Village. There, the Stewards packed up and participated in a small reflection exercises lead by brother Geiger. At one point during the reflection brother Geiger asked each member to pour a small amount of water from their water bottles into the river. He then prompted everyone to imagine where their water would …

Woody Encroachment Mechanisms Of A Symbiotic N-Fixing Shrub: Ecophysiology, Facilitation, And Resource Use Efficiency, Jaclyn Vick Dec 2011

Woody Encroachment Mechanisms Of A Symbiotic N-Fixing Shrub: Ecophysiology, Facilitation, And Resource Use Efficiency, Jaclyn Vick

Theses and Dissertations

Causes and consequences of woody encroachment into grass dominated systems have been widely studied, however functional mechanisms which promote encroachment are largely unknown. Many expansive woody species are shrubs with rhizobial or actinorhizal N-fixing symbiotic associations. Morella cerifera L. (Myricaceae) is an actinorhizal N-fixing shrub which rapidly expands into grasslands on the barrier islands off the coast of Virginia, USA. The objective of this research was to determine physiological drivers of woody encroachment resulting in increased woody cover of M. cerifera on Southeastern, US barrier islands. Variations in physiology and resource use efficiencies (RUE) of M. cerifera and co-occurring shrubs …

Price Appreciation, Bargaining Power, And The Determinants Of Corporate Leasing Policy, Daniel John Stone Dec 2011

Price Appreciation, Bargaining Power, And The Determinants Of Corporate Leasing Policy, Daniel John Stone

Pursuit - The Journal of Undergraduate Research at The University of Tennessee

This study uses price appreciation and bargaining power measures to determine whether current accounting standards are effective at classifying leases by ownership risk. I use a regression model, and find that there is a positive and significant relationship between changes in capital leases and my proxies for price appreciation and the interaction between price appreciation and bargaining power. I also find, however, that it’s possible that operating leases may be increasing faster, which would discount the theory that these standards are operating properly. These results should be cause for further study on the subject and should be interesting to regulators.

Neurogenetic Studies On The Role Of Diap1 In Neuronal Programmed Cell Death In Drosophila, Faith V. Creekmore Dec 2011

Neurogenetic Studies On The Role Of Diap1 In Neuronal Programmed Cell Death In Drosophila, Faith V. Creekmore

Pursuit - The Journal of Undergraduate Research at The University of Tennessee

The ventral Corazonin (vCrz) neurons provide a model system to study neuronal programmed cell death (PCD) in Drosophila, as they undergo caspase-dependent PCD during early metamorphosis between 1 and 7 hours after puparium formation (APF). DIAP1 (Drosophila inhibitor of apoptosis) is a key survival factor, preventing accidental cell death at the wrong stage. In response to death signals, caspase activation resulting from DIAP1 degradation is a primary cause of the PCD in many tissues. However, transgenic over-expression of the wild type diap1 gene in vCrz neurons failed to block PCD completely. This previous result suggested its role as …

Local Government Relations In Knox County Executive Collaboration And Its Impact, J. Ryan Sowell Dec 2011

Local Government Relations In Knox County Executive Collaboration And Its Impact, J. Ryan Sowell

Pursuit - The Journal of Undergraduate Research at The University of Tennessee

The recent governmental history of Knoxville and Knox County represents an intriguing case study of interest-group-led referendums, corruption, and reform. Recent structural reforms were a direct response to the unethical behavior displayed by some members of the Knox County Commission, but indirectly the changes attempted to address a number of lingering community issues. When placed in the context of the community’s contemporary political history, the reforms' significance becomes apparent. In the past twenty years the greater Knoxville community experienced intergovernmental court battles, a failed unification referendum, a sheriff with unprecedented political clout, and state legislative intervention. Executive leadership has had …

The Impact Of Surface Coal Mining On Residential Property Values: A Hedonic Price Analysis, Austin M. Williams Dec 2011

The Impact Of Surface Coal Mining On Residential Property Values: A Hedonic Price Analysis, Austin M. Williams

Pursuit - The Journal of Undergraduate Research at The University of Tennessee

The use of certain surface mining techniques is currently a heavily-debated environmental issue and one where consideration of non-market values is likely to lead to the creation of better public policy. This study uses the hedonic pricing method to investigate the impact that surface coal mines have on residential property values. The results of this statistical analysis show that as the number of surface mines and their average production increases, the median value of housing units in a county significantly decreases. In particular, for the three model specifications explored, it is estimated that the addition of a surface mine to …

System Dynamics Modeling For Childhood Obesity, Behrouz Madahian Dec 2011

System Dynamics Modeling For Childhood Obesity, Behrouz Madahian

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Effective strategies for prevention of obesity, particularly in youths, have been elusive since the recognition of obesity as a major public health issue two decades ago. In general, obesity is a result of chronic, quantitative imbalance between energy intake and energy expenditure, which is influenced by a combination of genetic, environmental, psychological and social factors. Therefore, a systems perspective is needed to examine effective obesity prevention strategies. In this study, a systems dynamics model was developed using the data from the Girls health Enrichment Multi-site Studies (GEMS). GEMS tested the efficacy of a 2-year family-based intervention to reduce excessive increase …

Open Educational Resources

Creativity is a talent that undergirds invention and innovation, making it an important skill in today’s society. Although students are often told to “be creative,” they many times do not know how and have little practice in this skill. This document presents an analysis of 33 creative products made by adult participants at a state conference for educators working with preK-12 gifted students or their teachers as a model for what teachers can do in their classrooms to allow students to practice creative thinking. During the conference presentation, Torrance’s creative strengths were reviewed with photographic examples, definitions, and suggestions printed …
