A Critique Of The Enlightenment Doctrine On Progressivism Through The Writings Of Francis A. Schaeffer, Nathan Hinkle
A Critique Of The Enlightenment Doctrine On Progressivism Through The Writings Of Francis A. Schaeffer, Nathan Hinkle
Senior Honors Theses
The Enlightenment doctrine of progressivism, and Francis Schaeffer’s Christian worldviews could hardly be more different. This thesis critiques the Enlightenment doctrine from the perspective of Francis Schaeffer through some of his most notable works. Specifically, this thesis explores the doctrine of progressivism, the idea that man and or society are constantly improving and getting better. The primary Enlightenment authors will include Voltaire, Hume, Locke, Rousseau, Turgot, and Kant. Francis Schaeffer’s counterarguments and perspective will be shown through The Complete Works of Francis A. Schaeffer, a five-volume collection of his various works.

Predicting Education Science Students’ Statistics Anxiety: The Role Of Prior Experiences Within A Framework Of Domain-Specific Motivation Constructs, Guenter Faber, Heike Drexler
Higher Learning Research Communications
Based on a cognitive-motivational modeling of construct relations, the present study aimed at analyzing the role of prior statistics experiences to explain education science students’ statistics anxiety. Data were analyzed from two independent samples which consisted of N = 113 and N = 87 participants – using a different operationalization of the experience variable in each case. In both samples, analyses demonstrated students’ statistics anxiety to be substantially explained by their self-concept and negative utility value – but not by their prior statistics experiences. However, conceptually assumed interaction effects between motivation and experience variables did not occur. Instead, students’ statistics …
Red-Marked Writing: High-Stakes Consequences On High School Writing Education, Dana Sarchet
Red-Marked Writing: High-Stakes Consequences On High School Writing Education, Dana Sarchet
Senior Honors Theses
The crucial role of writing in students’ educational growth and development is indisputable. Not only does the process of writing engage students in each level of Bloom’s taxonomy, but it also aids students in the development of their cognitive thinking skills. However, past and even recent statistics reveal a common trend: the vast majority of high school students lack even a basic understanding of writing. Though undoubtedly there are many issues contributing in this lapse of students’ writing abilities, high-stakes testing is a key factor in the decline of writing education in high school classrooms. In order for students to …

Understanding How Timing Of Alliance Formation Affects New-Venture Survival: The Dynamics Of Temporal Congruence And Contingency, David Gomulya
Understanding How Timing Of Alliance Formation Affects New-Venture Survival: The Dynamics Of Temporal Congruence And Contingency, David Gomulya
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
New-venture survival has greatly interested many scholars. While alliances have been shown to increase survival, the literature remains silent regarding the effect of timing of alliance formations. Related literatures regarding timing of other types of actions have also been unable to theoretically explain their conflicting empirical findings, which suggest that the effect of timing can range from positive to negative. To fill critical theoretical gaps, I develop a novel model based on temporal changes during the pre- and post-formation phases of an alliance. I show the effect can indeed range from positive to negative. I delineate further boundary condition.

Don't Blame Me: The Effects Of Ceo Power, Board Affiliation, And Sarbanes-Oxley On Ceo Turnover Following Financial Misrepresentation, David Gomulya
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
I examine the conditions under which CEOs are terminated as an outcome of firm financial restatements. I find that chief executive‘s power acts to limit terminations, especially in cases of more severe restatements, while board members most closely affiliated with the CEO appear to avoid the stigma of financial restatements by deflecting blame to the CEO, increasing terminations. I also examine the effectiveness of regulatory remedies such as Sarbanes-Oxley, aimed at strongly penalizing CEOs for financial misrepresentation. Sarbanes-Oxley significantly alters the relationship between CEOs and their board. My context is restating U.S. public firms before (1995-1998) and after Sarbanes-Oxley (2003-2006).
Social Capital In Senegal: Bane Or Boom?, Laura Livesay
Social Capital In Senegal: Bane Or Boom?, Laura Livesay
Capstone Projects – Politics and Government
In Senegal, at first glance, it appears that one’s social capital allows the individual to be able to survive, but not thrive. Social capital in Senegal appears to hinder local economic development. For my Capstone, I would like to focus more on what social capital means in Senegal, looking at both the benefits and drawbacks of its’ affect on local economic development. I will be focusing my research within my site, Dahra, population 40,000, and drawing upon case studies as I begin work. I will also be looking at the role of non-governmental organizations (specifically Peace Corps) in generating social …

In today’s economy, it is more crucial than ever to focus our educational efforts on increasing financial literacy. Many young people are unskilled in managing their personal finances, yet this critical life skill will greatly affect their future economic well-being. Reading Makes Cents, developed by Penn State University, is an excellent resource to address this need. A reviewed and recommended curriculum by National 4-H, this complete, easy to use curriculum targets youth in grades 3-5 with a combination of financial literacy and reading. The curriculum explores basic money concepts such as spending, saving, and sharing money. Lessons incorporate hands-on activities …

Sitting To Participate, Timothy Smith, Evan Taylor
iResearch: Department of Communication Studies Invitational Scholar Slam 2011-2012
Over the years of education one of the most beneficial things one could do is participate in class. Many scholars have research the causes for participation in a classroom and what affects it has on student’s grades. For our study we are looking at participation and seat location. As current students we feel that majority of the students who participate inside the classroom sit in the front of the classroom. We defined the front of the classroom as the first three rows, the back of the classroom as the last three rows, and the middle of the classroom anything between …

A Call For Change: The Evolution Of The Modern Documentary From Informative Media To Persuasive Platform, Valerie England
iResearch: Department of Communication Studies Invitational Scholar Slam 2011-2012
In the past several years, new documentaries have begun to evolve from informative media to persuasive platform as a result of changing cultural contexts and ideologies. These four films – Sicko, Food Inc., Waiting for Superman, and Inside Job effectively utilize common narratives and themes to present audiences with calls for reform in critical areas such as food safety, quality education, access to healthcare, and financial regulation. This shift reflects a transformation of the valuation of knowledge and how it serves various conflicting group interests.

The Evolution Of Note Taking: A Study On Traditional Hard Copy Methods Vs The Emerging Soft Copy Method, Jule Berkovatz, Erica De Guzman
iResearch: Department of Communication Studies Invitational Scholar Slam 2011-2012
Being that we both have grown up in the midst of the digital age, we have seen many things evolve, develop, and go electronic; including the way students choose to learn in the classroom. It seems that more and more students are choosing to take notes via laptop, tablet, or smart phone, but with that said it also appears that just as many students are choosing to stick with the more traditional pen and paper way of note taking as well. For our research, we have studied the benefits that may attract students to either note taking method, as well …
Gender Swapping In World Of Warcraft: A Look Into Personal Relationships And Gender Identity In The Gaming Environment, Jay Potter
iResearch: Department of Communication Studies Invitational Scholar Slam 2011-2012
Massively multi player online role-playing games (MMORPGs) are virtual environments that allow thousands of players to come together at one time to interact, fight monsters, and solve challenges. Role-playing in particular offers some unique benefits and opportunities that are not spared in its virtual equivalent. Gender-swapping, that is when a player chooses to play as a character that is the opposite gender of him or her is one of those benefits. This study will explore the phenomenon of gender-swapping, looking for the diverse reasons players may have to assume an identity so extremely opposite of their own. The purpose of …

Mouse Models Of Menopause And Ovarian Cancer Risks, Ying Wang
Mouse Models Of Menopause And Ovarian Cancer Risks, Ying Wang
Open Access Dissertations
Epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) is the leading cause of death from gynecological malignancy in Western countries. A better understanding of the etiology and risk factors associated with this disease is crucial for the development of early detection protocols as well as more effective therapies. Epidemiological data has shown that the risks of EOC are highest among peri- or post- menopause women, while increased parity or the use of oral contraceptives is preventive. These data suggest that alterations in reproductive factors are associated with ovarian cancer risks; however, the molecular mechanisms underlying such a link remain to be understood. For decades, …
