Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to collect and analyze quantitative and qualitative data to determine the overall impact of a pilot netbook initiative in five social studies classrooms. The researcher explored the impact on teaching and learning social studies with the primary source of curriculum delivery through one-to-one netbook computer access by students. It also focused on student perception of engagement, productivity, and learning of social studies curriculum through the utilization of a netbook computer in place of a traditional textbook in a social studies classroom.

The research and data collection, through the Grand Forks Public Schools Social Studies …

Palliative Care For People Living With Hiv/Aids In Uganda: An Investigation Of Patients & Caregiver’S Outcome And Professional Perspectives, Wesley Too Jan 2011

Palliative Care For People Living With Hiv/Aids In Uganda: An Investigation Of Patients & Caregiver’S Outcome And Professional Perspectives, Wesley Too

School of Nursing & Midwifery, East Africa

Background: Although antiretroviral treatment is expanding in sub-Saharan Africa, the World Health Organization advocates for integration of palliative care with HAART because pain, other distressing symptoms and complex psychosocial challenges persist throughout the HIV trajectory. Palliative care improves the outcome for patients with HIV and may complement antiretroviral treatment by increasing adherence through better management of side effects from the treatment, providing patient and family-centred holistic care, and giving end-of-life care when necessary. However, integrating what have become two disciplines is challenging. Aim: To study the implications for palliative care provision in the context of changing policy to universal access …

Achieving Community Preparedness Post-Katrina, Christine G. Springer Jan 2011

Achieving Community Preparedness Post-Katrina, Christine G. Springer

Public Policy and Leadership Faculty Research

Improving disaster response capabilities within this country requires better coordination not only within the Department of Homeland Security, but also across the federal government as well as with state and local governments, private and non-profit sectors. To do so, according to more than 150 state and local stakeholders that I surveyed in April, 2009 and again in April, 2010, requires that FEMA improve its capacity to fully support state, local and tribal stakeholders … that it improve its internal business practices so as to better implement federal policies and guidance…that it find a way to use thematic goals and transition …

The Roman Empire: The Defender Of Early First Century Christianity, John Toone Jan 2011

The Roman Empire: The Defender Of Early First Century Christianity, John Toone

Senior Honors Theses

All of the events, authors, and purposes of the books in the New Testament occurred under the reign of the Roman Empire (27 B.C.—A.D. 476). Therefore, an understanding of the Roman Empire is necessary for comprehending the historical context of the New Testament. In order to fully understand the impact of the Roman Empire on the New Testament, particularly before the destruction of the Jewish Temple in A.D. 70, Rome’s effect on religion (and the religious laws that governed its practice) must be examined. Contrary to expectations, the Roman Empire emerges from this examination as the protector (not persecutor) of …

Typothesis: A Study Of Warde's Crystal Goblet, Leeuwen's Typographic Meaning And How It Relates To The Bible, Ryan Mercer

Senior Honors Theses

The way readers interpret the written word is changing. We look for information almost as much in between the lines as we do in the words themselves. The internet and its tools offer ways for readers to engage the text like never before — can the printed word keep up? This thesis will look at the history of print through the eyes of typography and decide if multimodal methods of arranging type are appropriate or even possible in the modern book. Specifically, it will look at the Christian Bible and it’s already present use of multimodalism. This study will bring …

Divorce And A Deafening Silence: Exegesis Of Exodus 21:10-11 In The Twentieth Century, Jeffrey A. White Jan 2011

Divorce And A Deafening Silence: Exegesis Of Exodus 21:10-11 In The Twentieth Century, Jeffrey A. White

Senior Honors Theses

With the publication of his 2002 Divorce and Remarriage in the Bible, David Instone-Brewer seemed to have ignited a firestorm—within Christian circles and without—over a millennia-old issue: the biblical grounds for divorce. Given the Christian church’s pressing need to provide hope and healing for victims of divorce, Christian academia must provide an assessment of Instone-Brewer’s controversial work. One aspect of this assessment involves Instone-Brewer’s treatment of Exodus 21:10-11, the text from which he derives two grounds for divorce: emotional and material neglect. Taking as its research pool exegetical commentaries published since Keil and Delitzsch’s 1891 Commentary of the Old …

Domestic Violence: The Use Of Pro-Arrest Policies And Mandatory Prosecutions, Amy L. Beck Jan 2011

Domestic Violence: The Use Of Pro-Arrest Policies And Mandatory Prosecutions, Amy L. Beck

Senior Honors Theses

Domestic violence is a crime that affects millions of American families. Traditionally,
domestic violence was recognized by the general population and the courts as being a
private issue that should be handled within the boundaries of the family. Law
enforcement and the judicial system played a minimal role and generally maintained a
hands off policy in relation to domestic violence cases. Adding to this mentality of
privacy, the Fourth Amendment to the Constitution prohibits entering a residence without
probable cause. The Minneapolis domestic violence experiment attempted to measure
which police response was most beneficial. In order to empower victims and …

John 14:17 And The Holy Spirit In The Gospel Of John, Daniel R. Sloan Jan 2011

John 14:17 And The Holy Spirit In The Gospel Of John, Daniel R. Sloan

Senior Honors Theses

This thesis examines John 14:17, along with other passages in John, and identifies whether or not the disciples were indwelled before Jesus’ glorification or after his glorification. It does this through defining of Holy Spirit terms, a study on the Holy Spirit in John, and word studies on different words throughout John. The conclusion of the paper shows that the Holy Spirit could not indwell the disciples before the glorification of Jesus and gives evidence to show why this could not occur.

Fatal Familial Insomnia: An Overview, Eric Schools Jan 2011

Fatal Familial Insomnia: An Overview, Eric Schools

Senior Honors Theses

Fatal Familial Insomnia (FFI) is an insidious prion disorder that tends to manifest itself as a patient reaches middle age following a pattern consistent with autosomal dominance. A wide range of symptoms are represented, many related to motor function and autonomic regulation, but degeneration of certain areas of the thalamus is present in every case. Genetically, the condition is transmitted only within families, but it has been demonstrated by Jackson et al. (2009) that FFI can be transmitted by exposure to/ingestion of infected material. A number of groundbreaking studies are discussed. These include the initial documentation of FFI as a …

The Ethics Of Willful Ignorance, Rebecca Roiphe Jan 2011

The Ethics Of Willful Ignorance, Rebecca Roiphe

Articles & Chapters

The ABA ethical rules state that a lawyer may not assist a client in conduct that she “knows” is criminal or fraudulent. In this article, I argue that we ought to hold lawyers responsible when they remain willfully ignorant of their clients’ illegal activity. When a lawyer suspects that her client might be engaged in criminal or fraudulent activity, she should have an obligation to investigate. I disagree with prominent legal ethics scholar, David Luban, who has argued that lawyers should be able to turn a blind eye to signs of wrongdoing. I argue that rather than undermining the attorney …

Obesity In Children And Adolescents And Its Relationship With Hypertension, Dr Vijayanath Itagi, Ramesh Patil

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

It is difficult to project the prevalence of obesity and overweight among children in India since there is no nationally representative data from India. We determined the time trends in childhood obesity in a representative sample of schoolchildren from Raichur District, Karnataka and investigated the relationship of obesity with blood pressure. Materials and methods: We used a stratified random cluster sampling method to select the children. Anthropometric data were collected from 23,842 students, 5-16 years of age, during 2005-06. Blood pressure and anthropometric data were collected from 19,263 students during 2007-08. Overweight and obesity were defined by body mass index …

Encouraging Private Investment In Energy Efficiency, Sarah B. Schindler Jan 2011

Encouraging Private Investment In Energy Efficiency, Sarah B. Schindler

Faculty Publications

Combating the negative effects of climate change requires finding ways to increase energy production while reducing energy demand. Every New England state has programs in place to encourage home and business owners to improve the energy efficiency of their buildings. Despite the clear fmancial benefits and environmental benefits that result from energy efficiency upgrades, most New Englanders have not taken advantage ofthe programs being offered by their states.

An Evolving Foreclosure Landscape: The Ibanez Case And Beyond, Peter R. Pitegoff, Laura S. Underkuffler Jan 2011

An Evolving Foreclosure Landscape: The Ibanez Case And Beyond, Peter R. Pitegoff, Laura S. Underkuffler

Faculty Publications

Mortgage securitization, subprime lending, a persistently weak housing market, and an explosion of residential mortgage defaults – today’s homeowners and banks face a new and challenging landscape. Recently, courts in several states have issued decisions that alter the terrain for mortgage foreclosures. In Massachusetts, New Jersey, and New York, among other states, courts have dismissed foreclosure actions on the basis of what might seem to be highly technical deficiencies in the pleading or proof. The most well-known–and controversial–in this cluster of cases is U.S. Bank National Ass’n v. Ibanez, decided by the Supreme Judicial Court of Massachusetts this year. In …

A Molecular Ecological Survey Of Tick (Ixodes Scapularis) Population Density And Their Infection Rates With Borrelia Burgdorferi At The New Jersey School Of Conservation, Nathaly M. Salazar-Vasquez

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

Studying vector populations of the Ixodes scapularis tick is of major importance in New Jersey, an endemic area of Lyme disease. This species of tick is a vector for various disease pathogens including the bacterium that causes Lyme disease, Borrelia burgdorferi. This study focused on Ixodes scapularis tick surveillance at the New Jersey School of Conservation, in Sussex County, New Jersey. Collection of host-seeking ticks began in July 2009 and has continued until December of 2010, by drag-cloth sampling in order to monitor tick abundances of all life-cycle stages.

In 2010 relative abundances for larvae and nymphal stages declined as …

Methionine-35 Of Aβ(1-42): Importance For Oxidative Stress In Alzheimer Disease, D. Allan Butterfield, Rukhsana Sultana Jan 2011

Methionine-35 Of Aβ(1-42): Importance For Oxidative Stress In Alzheimer Disease, D. Allan Butterfield, Rukhsana Sultana

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Alzheimer disease (AD) is an age-related progressive neurodegenerative disorder. This devastating disease is characterized by the presence of senile plaques (SP), neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs), and loss of synapses. Amyloid beta-peptide 1–42 (Aβ(1–42)) is the main component of SP and is pivotal to AD pathogenesis. Brain of subjects with AD and arguably its earliest manifestation, mild cognitive impairment (MCI), demonstrate increased levels of oxidative stress markers. Our laboratory combined these two aspects of AD and MCI and proposed the Aβ(1–42)-associated free radical oxidative stress hypothesis to explain oxidative stress under which the MCI and AD brain exist …

Implementing Routine Provider-Initiated Hiv Testing In Public Health Care Facilities In Kenya: A Qualitative Descriptive Study Of Nurses' Experiences, Catrin Evans, Eunice Ndirangu Jan 2011

Implementing Routine Provider-Initiated Hiv Testing In Public Health Care Facilities In Kenya: A Qualitative Descriptive Study Of Nurses' Experiences, Catrin Evans, Eunice Ndirangu

School of Nursing & Midwifery, East Africa

Routine 'provider-initiated testing and counselling' (PITC) for HIV has been implemented amidst concern over how consent, confidentiality and counselling (the 3C’s) can be maintained in underresourced health care settings. In Kenya, PITC has been rolled out since 2005, HIV prevalence is 7.1% and over 86% of adults have not been tested. Kenyan nurses are the main cadre implementing PITC but little is known about their experiences of incorporating HIV testing into everyday practice and the challenges faced in maintaining the 3’Cs within their work environments. This study aimed to explore these issues and adopted a qualitative multi-method design using a …

School of Nursing & Midwifery, East Africa

In addition to the HLA locus, six genetic risk factors for primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC) have been identified in recent genome-wide association studies (GWAS). To identify additional loci, we carried out a GWAS using 1,840 cases from the UK PBC Consortium and 5,163 UK population controls as part of the Wellcome Trust Case Control Consortium 3 (WTCCC3). We followed up 28 loci in an additional UK cohort of 620 PBC cases and 2,514 population controls. We identified 12 new susceptibility loci (at a genome-wide significance level of P < 5 × 10⁻⁸) and replicated all previously associated loci. We identified three further new loci in a meta-analysis of data from our study and previously published GWAS results. New candidate genes include STAT4, DENND1B, CD80, IL7R, CXCR5, TNFRSF1A, CLEC16A and NFKB1. This study has considerably expanded our knowledge of the genetic architecture of PBC
