The Paradoxical Effect Of Intercity Transportation And Communications Infrastructure On Urban Concentration: The Dispersion-Concentration Model, Alvaro Ballarin Cabrera Jan 2011

The Paradoxical Effect Of Intercity Transportation And Communications Infrastructure On Urban Concentration: The Dispersion-Concentration Model, Alvaro Ballarin Cabrera

Economics Honors Projects

This study examines the effect of intercity transportation and communications infrastructure on urban concentration on a sample of 84 countries between the years 1960 and 2010. By comparing the effects of interregional transportation and communications infrastructure on primacy and urbanization, I find that (1) such investments promote population dispersion amongst connected areas and (2) population concentration from unconnected locations into connected ones. Therefore, intercity transportation and communications infrastructure is only effective at reducing excessive concentration when the dispersion effect exceeds the concentration effect.

Investigations Into Library Web Scale Discovery Services, Jason Vaughan Jan 2011

Investigations Into Library Web Scale Discovery Services, Jason Vaughan

Library Faculty Research

Web scale discovery services for libraries provide deep discovery to a library’s local and licensed content, and represent an evolution, perhaps a revolution, for end user information discovery as pertains to library collections. This article frames the topic of Web scale discovery, and begins by illuminating Web scale discovery from an academic library’s perspective – that is, the internal perspective seeking widespread staff participation in the discovery conversation. This included the creation of a Discovery Task Force, a group which educated library staff, conducted internal staff surveys, and gathered observations from early adopters. The article next addresses the substantial research …

Library Faculty Research

The Standards for Libraries in Higher Education are designed to guide academic libraries in advancing and sustaining their role as partners in educating students, achieving their institutions’ missions, and positioning libraries as leaders in assessment and continuous improvement on their campuses. Libraries must demonstrate their value and document their contributions to overall institutional effectiveness and be prepared to address changes in higher education. These Standards were developed through study and consideration of new and emerging issues and trends in libraries, higher education, and accrediting practices. These Standards differ from previous versions by articulating expectations for library contributions to institutional effectiveness. …

Psychometric Properties Of The Arabic Translated Version Of The Rcmas: Preliminary Indicators From A Jordanian Sample, Mohammad A. Al Jabery, Diana H. Arabiat

Journal for International Counselor Education

This study examined the acceptability, reliability, and validity of the Arabic translated version of the Revised Children’s Manifest Anxiety Scale (RCMAS) (Reynolds & Richmond, 1978). This instrument is one of the most widely used instruments for assessing childhood anxiety. It has been demonstrated to be reliable across different gender, racial, and age groups. A cross cultural validation was performed in three phases: Forward-backward translation, pilot testing, and estimation of reliability and validity. A sample of 98 children (19 boys and 79 girls) was recruited from two regular primary schools in Jordan. Analysis showed that the RCMAS possesses satisfactory internal consistency; …

A Qualitative Study Of Doctoral Student Supervisory Development, Kimberly J. Desmond, Clarrice A. Rapisarda, Jill R. Nelson

Journal for International Counselor Education

Doctoral students in a Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) accredited program are required to have training in clinical supervision. Frequently doctoral counseling programs have a supervision practicum course designed to facilitate student development into a supervisor. This qualitative research utilized a collective case study approach to gather descriptions of the experiences doctoral students found most useful about their supervision training. Doctoral students enrolled in a supervision practicum course were asked to describe their experiences as supervisors in training through a semi-structured interview approach. Three broad themes emerged from the data: Facilitation of Development, Formation of …

Needs, Attitudes Toward Seeking Professional Help, And Preferred Sources Of Help Among Emirati College Students, Fatima R. Al-Darmaki Jan 2011

Needs, Attitudes Toward Seeking Professional Help, And Preferred Sources Of Help Among Emirati College Students, Fatima R. Al-Darmaki

Journal for International Counselor Education

This investigation, conducted in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), examined Emirati college students’ needs, help-seeking attitudes, preference for source of help, and perceptions of counseling services offered on campus. Most participants reported moderate levels of personal, academic, career, and interpersonal needs, although results varied along gender lines. Overall, participants displayed slightly positive attitudes toward seeking professional help, yet showed negative attitudes toward interpersonal openness, although this, too, differed by gender. Participants preferred non-professional sources of help, such as family and friends. Participants understood counseling services on campus to refer to academic-related services. Findings are discussed within the UAE cultural context.

Techno-Economic Analysis And Engineering Design Consideration Of Algal Biofuel In Southern Nevada, Jian Ma Jan 2011

Techno-Economic Analysis And Engineering Design Consideration Of Algal Biofuel In Southern Nevada, Jian Ma

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Research

As the biological and chemical technologies in algae biofuels production, engineering design, siting and resources are playing some dominant role in successfully developing and scaling locally. The southwest region in U.S. has been identified by DoE and the USDA as the most suitable area for developing algal biofuel production due to several merits like the high level of solar radiation, large arid land not good for food production. Among this region, Southern Nevada has unique advantage to grow microalgae biomass, which is the large amount of CO2 emission from about 16 power plants in Clark County to support the world …

Diffuse-Charge Dynamics Of Ionic Liquids In Electrochemical Systems, Hui Zhao Jan 2011

Diffuse-Charge Dynamics Of Ionic Liquids In Electrochemical Systems, Hui Zhao

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Research

We employ a continuum theory of solvent-free ionic liquids accounting for both short-range electrostatic correlations and steric effects (finite ion size) [Bazant et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 106, 046102 (2011)] to study the response of a model microelectrochemical cell to a step voltage. The model problem consists of a 1-1 symmetric ionic liquid between two parallel blocking electrodes, neglecting any transverse transport phenomena. Matched asymptotic expansions in the limit of thin double layers are applied to analyze the resulting one-dimensional equations and study the overall charge-time relation in the weakly nonlinear regime. One important conclusion is that our …

Role Of Hydrodynamic Behavior Of Dna Molecules In Dielectrophoretic Polarization Under The Action Of An Electric Field, Hui Zhao Jan 2011

Role Of Hydrodynamic Behavior Of Dna Molecules In Dielectrophoretic Polarization Under The Action Of An Electric Field, Hui Zhao

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Research

A continuum model is developed to predict the dielectrophoretic polarizability of coiled DNA molecules under the action of an alternating current electric field. The model approximates the coiled DNA molecule as a charged porous spherical particle. The model explains the discrepancies among scaling laws of polarizability of different-sized DNA molecules with contour length and such discrepancies are attributed to different hydrodynamic behavior. With zero or one fitting parameter, theoretical predictions are in good agreement with various experimental data, even though in experiments there are some uncertainties in regard to certain parameters.

Streaming Potential Generated By A Pressure-Driven Flow Over Superhydrophobic Stripes, Hui Zhao Jan 2011

Streaming Potential Generated By A Pressure-Driven Flow Over Superhydrophobic Stripes, Hui Zhao

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Research

The streaming potential generated by a pressure-driven flow over a weakly charged slip-stick surface [the zeta potential of the surface is smaller than the thermal potential (25 mV)] with an arbitrary double layer thickness is theoretically studied by solving the Debye–Huckel equation and Stokes equation. A series solution of the streaming potential is derived. Approximate expressions for the streaming potential in the limits of thin double layers and thick double layers are also given in excellent agreement with the full solution. To understand the impact of the slip, the streaming potential is compared against that over a homogeneously charged smooth …

A Phylogeographic And Population Genetic Analysis Of A Widespread, Sedentary North American Bird: The Hairy Woodpecker (Picoides Villosus), John Klicka, Garth M. Spellman, Kevin Winker, Vivien Chua, Brian T. Smith

Ornithology Program (HRC)

The Hairy Woodpecker (Picoides villosus) has one of the broadest breeding distributions of any North American bird and is also one of the most morphologically variable with as many as 21 described subspecies. This wide distribution and high degree of phenotypic diversity suggests the presence of underlying genetic structure. We used ND2 sequence from 296 individuals from 89 localities throughout the Hairy Woodpecker distribution to address this question and to explore this species’ evolutionary history. Phylogenetic analyses identified three main Hairy Woodpecker clades, each ~1.5% divergent from one another. One clade was comprised of birds from boreal and eastern zones …

Visualization using advanced computational and graphic equipment has become a standard way of present day research. Availability of low cost and fast processing units, high resolution displays with graphic processing units, and specialized software has brought complex visualization capabilities to an office desktop. Nevertheless, when dealing with large datasets such as, global climate, geospatial, and social data the office desktop falls short and calls for a centralized visualization facility with high end computing and graphics equipment.

Visualization Facility at GIS and Remote Sensing Core Lab would be a useful and important addition to the UNLV IT infrastructure. It would provide …
