Neurotransmitter Systems And Eeg Related To Acupuncture, Michael L. Marshall Jan 2011

Neurotransmitter Systems And Eeg Related To Acupuncture, Michael L. Marshall

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Acupuncture has been used for thousands of years to treat a wide range of diseases, but the mechanisms involved in the process have remained a mystery. The present study measures EEG responses to stimulation of a specific acupuncture point, GB37 (Guang Ming), with two different types of manual needle stimulation. Previous studies stimulated for a maximum of 2 minutes. The present study reflects the normal acupuncture treatment time of 20 minutes, with EEG recordings during and for 10 minutes prior to and after stimulation. Our results show no changes in the global spatial and temporal properties of EEG during and …

Novel Nn Paradigm For The Prediction Of Hematocrit Value During Blood Transfusion, Jay. Thakkar Jan 2011

Novel Nn Paradigm For The Prediction Of Hematocrit Value During Blood Transfusion, Jay. Thakkar

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

During the Leukocytapheresis (LCAP) process used to treat patients suffering from acute Ulcerative Colitis, medical practitioners have to continuously monitor the Hematocrit (Ht) level in the blood to ensure it is within the acceptable range. The work done, as a part of this thesis, attempts to create an early warning system that can be used to predict if and when the Ht values will deviate from the acceptable range. To do this we have developed an algorithm based on the Group Method of Data Handling (GMDH) and compared it to other Neural Network algorithms, in particular the Multi Layer Perceptron …

Olive Schreiner On "Times And Seasons", Mellissa M. Carr Jan 2011

Olive Schreiner On "Times And Seasons", Mellissa M. Carr

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Olive Schreine'rs novel, The Story of an African Farm, and nonfiction work, Woman and Labor, have compelled critics to apply the term New Woman to her main character, Lyndall, who speaks out for change against the established gender roles. The thesis proposes that by placing Lyndall in a colonial context, Schreiner creates a plot where place and language embody the possibilities for change. Considering that Schreiner's life consisted of a life in the colonies, first as a governess, later as a wife, one sees Schreiner's personal interest in change. Analyzing Schreiner's style of representing Lyndall's relationship with nature and other …

Patterns Of Influence On School Engagement And The Moderating Effects Of Maternal Affection, Donna Marion Jan 2011

Patterns Of Influence On School Engagement And The Moderating Effects Of Maternal Affection, Donna Marion

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

This study investigated friend influence on school engagement in a sample of 160 stable same-sex friendship dyads (94 female dyads and 66 male dyads) from five senior high schools and four vocational schools in a small city in central Finland. Longitudinal data were collected during the first and second years of upper secondary school, approximately one year apart, and self-reports were available from both members of each friendship dyad. The framework of the Actor-Partner Interdependence Model (APIM; Kenny, Kashy & Cook, 2006) was used to estimate friend influence on school engagement in a model that did not distinguish same-sex friends, …

Philosophical Analysis Of America's Transformation To Universal Health Care, Jennifer Lynn Mantoni Jan 2011

Philosophical Analysis Of America's Transformation To Universal Health Care, Jennifer Lynn Mantoni

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Human beings have two apparently conflicting fundamental rights. On the one hand, individuals have a right to health care as the United Nations declared in 1948. On the other hand, individuals have a right to liberty; that is, the freedom to make one's own health related choices, even poor ones. One goal of this essay is to show how to reconcile these two apparently conflicting core American values. This reconciliation is important, because a universal health care system that is fair and just must account for individual rights in tandem with attempts to address matters of social justice. In order …

Persepolis And Waltz With Bashir, An Alternative Perspective On The Middle East, A Mirror For The West, Kristyna. Dzmuranova Jan 2011

Persepolis And Waltz With Bashir, An Alternative Perspective On The Middle East, A Mirror For The West, Kristyna. Dzmuranova

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

This project presents a three-level analysis of Persepolis and Waltz with Bashir to elucidate the way these films deconstruct the image of the Middle East that the dominant Western media perpetuate. The thesis demonstrates that the combination of highly expressive and easily understandable animated form with an autobiographical storyline that endows the films with attractive authenticity, personification and intimacy, creates a palatable setting for the intellectual texts. Further, this project discloses the ways representation gives rise to stereotypes and illustrates how the films articulate an alternative to the dichotomous perception of West versus Middle East. The movies impersonate a unique, …

Prepare, Process, Package, Walteria C. Tucker Jan 2011

Prepare, Process, Package, Walteria C. Tucker

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Since Alejo Carpentier's 1944 encounter with the "real maravilloso" in the ruins of the Citadelle La Ferriáere, Haiti has been linked with the notion of Latin American identity, in particular, and American identity, in general. Interesting to me are the ways and the means by which Haiti resurfaces in Cuban and Puerto Rican narratives and what allusions to Haiti in these texts imply about its relationship to the Hispanic Caribbean. I will combine the ideas of John Beverley, Sybille Fischer, and Mimi Sheller to discuss how representations of Haiti work to perpetuate its disavowal and render it a consumable product …

Preschoolers' Use Of Intentionality In Understanding Causal Structure Of Objects During Imitation Learning, Amy K. Gardiner Jan 2011

Preschoolers' Use Of Intentionality In Understanding Causal Structure Of Objects During Imitation Learning, Amy K. Gardiner

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Object use is a ubiquitous characteristic of the human species, and learning how objects function is a fundamental part of human development. This research examines the role that intentionality plays in children's understanding of causal relationships during imitation learning of object use. In Studies 1, 2, and 3, 2- to 5-year-olds observed demonstrations in which causally irrelevant and causally relevant actions were performed to achieve a desired goal of retrieving toys from within containers. Irrelevant actions were performed either intentionally ("There!") or accidentally ("Whoops! I didn't mean to do that!"). Study 1 found that 3-, 4-, and 5-year-olds, but not …

Quantitative data were collected through an online survey in order to provide a comprehensive picture of high school social studies teachers' self-reported classroom practices relating to the use of active prereading, during-reading, and postreading strategies. Additionally, the survey asked teachers to self-report their observations of student independent implementation of the same active reading strategies. These data were used to provide an in-depth look that expanded on …

Reconfiguring The Classic Narrative Of Pulp Fiction, Alexandria S. Gray Jan 2011

Reconfiguring The Classic Narrative Of Pulp Fiction, Alexandria S. Gray

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

This project considers four writers that have used postmodern narrative strategies to reconfigure classic pulp science fiction tropes. The primary texts are Catherine L. Moore's "Shambleau," Eleanor Arnason's "The Warlord of Saturn's Moons", Robert Heinlein's "The Rolling Stones", and Margaret Atwood's "The Blind Assassin". Each experiments with narrative voices or uses a story-within-a-story structure. These strategies enable the authors to engage and comment on the process of how traditional tropes and narratives are brought into a new context through appropriation and reconstruction.

Cognitive leisure activities in general, and particularly doing crossword puzzles, reading books, watching television, and emailing are associated with a reduced risk of dementia. Doing aerobics, learning computer programming, babysitting, dancing, jogging …

Rhetoric In Mirrors, Courtney N. Gregory Jan 2011

Rhetoric In Mirrors, Courtney N. Gregory

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

This project examines the blending of verbal and visual discourse in three of Christopher Marlowes early works: Dido Queen of Carthage and Tamburlaine the Great, Parts I and II. Through the process of appeals, both Dido and Zenocrate become more than feminine counterparts in a heroic tale and ultimately engage in rhetorical conquest themselves. Marlowe's treatment of Dido and Zenocrate portrays them as dynamic figures whose ambitions emerge upon the stage. In each drama, the feminine agency legitimizes the action of the play. Dido utilizes visual appeals to contest the fate of the gods and persuade Aeneas to become the …

Role Of Middle Childhood Attachment Styles In Peer Liking And Target-Specific Aggression, Alexzandria. May Jan 2011

Role Of Middle Childhood Attachment Styles In Peer Liking And Target-Specific Aggression, Alexzandria. May

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Attachment, a vital part of human life, is defined as a strong emotional bond with a caregiver that is formed through repetitions of behaviors that children adjust to accordingly. One forms a view on relationships that transfers from parents to peers as a result of their internal working model (IWM). A secure attachment can form a healthy model while an insecure one may form an unhealthy, negative model. The present study assesses preadolescents' attachment styles toward their friends and examines whether their attachment styles interact with peers' attachment styles to predict liking of the peers and aggression toward the peers.

Selecting, Retaining, And Socializing Friends, Dawn Delay Jan 2011

Selecting, Retaining, And Socializing Friends, Dawn Delay

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Friends have been implicated in the acquisition of adolescent substance use, but little attention has been given to how the origins of substance use similarity vary across groups. The first aim of this study is to examine whether friend selection, de-selection, and socialization differ as a function of friendship group's substance use. The second aim of this study is to extend Simulation Investigation for Empirical Network Analyses (SIENA) by demonstrating how group-level interactions can be included in the mode, and to demonstrate a new method to follow-up statistically significant group-level interactions in SIENA. Participants include 1419 Finnish students (729 females, …

Self-Relevant Familiarity Effects On Object Recognition, Evangelie. Daskagianni

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Recent research in visual object recognition has shown that context can facilitate object recognition. This study assessed the effect of self-relevant familiarity of context in object recognition. Participants performed a task in which they had to recognize degraded objects shown under varying levels of contextual information. The level of degradation at which they could successfully recognize the target object was used as a measure of performance. There were five contextual conditions: (1) no context, (2) context, (3) context and size, (4) context and location, (5) context, size and location. Within each contextual condition, we compared the performance of "Expert" participants …

Self-Reported Use Of Metacognitive Reading Strategies Of Community College Students, Sophia. Munro Jan 2011

Self-Reported Use Of Metacognitive Reading Strategies Of Community College Students, Sophia. Munro

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

College requires students to read strategically in order to be academically successful (Caverly, Nicholson, & Radcliffe, 2004). Strategic readers utilize a variety of strategies, including metacognitive reading strategies (Mokhtari & Reichard, 2002; Pressley & Afflerbach, 1995). However, not all students use the same strategies when reading academic text. The purpose of this study was to explore whether students enrolled in a developmental reading course report using different metacognitive reading strategies than students who are enrolled in a college-level English course. The Metacognitive Awareness of Reading Strategies Inventory (Mokhatari & Reichard, 2002) was administered to 423 students at a community college …

Studied Girlhoods, Regina. Dilgen Jan 2011

Studied Girlhoods, Regina. Dilgen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Dorothy Allison's Two or Three Things I Know for Sure, Mary Karr's The Liars' Club, and Barbara Robinette Moss's Change Me into Zeus's Daughter are memoirs published in the 1990s of girlhoods in the late 1950s and early 1960s. This dissertation uses and expands upon the approaches of the multi-disciplinary Girls' Studies in analyzing how these memoirists theorize their own girlhoods. Each memoirist represents her experience in a culture that attempts to marginalize, silence, and define her. An application of the foundational work on girlhood in developmental psychology provides for an analysis of each memoirist's depiction of girlhood as a …

Third Age Adult English Language Learners In Informal Library Settings, Mary Anne Cassell Jan 2011

Third Age Adult English Language Learners In Informal Library Settings, Mary Anne Cassell

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

There is little research-based and theoretical literature about adult education or English literacy classes in nonformal settings such as library literacy programs in the community (Mathews-Aydinli, 2008; McCook & Barber, 2002b). The purpose of this phenomenological case study was to explore the motivation, learning supports, learning barriers, and program change recommendations of Third Age Learners in a nonformal library ESOL setting. This study provides insight into the demographic variable of linguistically-isolated Third Age English Language Learners (ELLs) participating in a library conversationally-based ESOL program. The results can guide libraries offering services, as well as those considering offering services to these …

Transcending Political Party Constraints, Cara. Poplak Jan 2011

Transcending Political Party Constraints, Cara. Poplak

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

This thesis analyzes how the American political system presents specific rhetorical constraints for independent and third party candidates who are "othered" by the system. To better understand how independent candidates overcome these constraints, the rhetoric of two such recent candidates, Charlie Crist and Joe Lieberman, is analyzed using ideographic criticism. These two candidates were originally affiliated with one of the two major political parties, but changed their party affiliation to run as Independent candidates. To facilitate their transition to independent candidates, both politicians used popular American political ideographs such as "the people," "freedom," and "unity" to maintain their allegiance to …

Uncovering The Role Of The Rodent Dorsal Hippocampus In Spatial And Object Memory Retrieval, Lisa Rios Jan 2011

Uncovering The Role Of The Rodent Dorsal Hippocampus In Spatial And Object Memory Retrieval, Lisa Rios

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Male C7BL/6J mice were implanted with bilateral dorsal CA1 guide cannulae. After confirming that intrahippocampal microinfusion of muscimol impaired hippocampal function, demonstrated by impaired performance in the Morris water maze, the influence of intrahippocampal muscimol was tested in the Novel Object Recognition paradigm. During a test session 24 h after the last habituation/sample session, mice were presented with one familiar object and one novel object. Successful retention of object memory was inferred if mice spent more time exploring the novel object than the familiar object. Results demonstrate that muscimol infused into dorsal CA1 region prior to the test session eliminates …

We Once Lived In Caves And Other Stories, Khristian. Mecom Jan 2011

We Once Lived In Caves And Other Stories, Khristian. Mecom

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

The following manuscript is a collection of eight short stories that center on the theme of how stories and storytelling, in all their different forms, fill our lives. In one story a girl that lives in other people's houses, longs to tell her story, while in another story a girl struggles with a secret her grandmother leaves behind as she tries to reconstruct her grandmother's story. Some stories use magical and fairy tale-like elements, which work as allusions in the stories and echo the events happening in characters' lives. Another theme present in the collection is that of family and …

What's So Fair About The Status Quo?, Nicholas J. Martens Jan 2011

What's So Fair About The Status Quo?, Nicholas J. Martens

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

System justification theorists have proposed that people are motivated to view their political, economic, and social circumstances as desirable, necessary, and fair (e.g., Jost, Nosek & Banaji, 2004). Despite more than 15 years of system justification research, the meaning of fairness within this context has not been investigated directly. Over the past several decades three major criteria have been identified as contributing to people's perceptions of fairness: distributive justice, procedural justice, and one's own idiosyncratic set of personal values. Focusing on the last two, we reasoned that values are represented more abstractly than is information about procedural fairness, and that …

Young Children's Artifact Conceptualization, Patricia P. Schultz Jan 2011

Young Children's Artifact Conceptualization, Patricia P. Schultz

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

One of the most fundamental functions of human cognition is to parse an otherwise chaotic world into different kinds of things. The ability to learn what objects are and how to respond to them appropriately is essential for daily living. The literature has presented contrasting evidence about the role of perpetual features such as artifact appearance versus causal or inductive reasoning in chldren's category distinctions (e.g., function). The present project used a child-initiated inquiry paradigm to investigate how children conceptualize artifacts, specifically how they prioritize different types of information that typify not only novel but also familiar objects. Results underscore …

The Role Of Feedback In The Assimilation Of Information In Prediction Markets, Richard Donald Jolly Jan 2011

The Role Of Feedback In The Assimilation Of Information In Prediction Markets, Richard Donald Jolly

Dissertations and Theses

Leveraging the knowledge of an organization is an ongoing challenge that has given rise to the field of knowledge management. Yet, despite spending enormous sums of organizational resources on Information Technology (IT) systems, executives recognize there is much more knowledge to harvest. Prediction markets are emerging as one tool to help extract this tacit knowledge and make it operational. Yet, prediction markets, like other markets, are subject to pathologies (e.g., bubbles and crashes) which compromise their accuracy and may discourage organizational use.

The techniques of experimental economics were used to study the characteristics of prediction markets. Empirical data was gathered …

Embracing The Visual: Using Timelines With In-Depth Interviews On Substance Use And Treatment, Lynda Berends Jan 2011

Embracing The Visual: Using Timelines With In-Depth Interviews On Substance Use And Treatment, Lynda Berends

The Qualitative Report

People typically seek treatment for addiction only when faced with a major crisis. Understanding the trajectory of substance use and treatment seeking may assist in identifying points for intervention. In this study I explored the use of visual methods with in-depth interviews to represent people's substance use, critical events, and treatment pathways. Ethics approval was granted with the condition that only aggregate findings would be presented, although occasional quotes could be used for illustration. Typical timelines were developed, along with text vignettes describing hypothetical participants whose experience matched that shown in these timelines. Benefits of the timelines include the combination …
