Financial Sector Development And Economic Growth: A Theoretical Exposition., P.N. Umoh Dec 2011

Financial Sector Development And Economic Growth: A Theoretical Exposition., P.N. Umoh

Economic and Financial Review

The various literature and studies reviewed in this exposition have underscored the positive impacts of a developed financial sector on an economy. Whilst a few studies showed that finance follows growth, the majority opinion is that finance leads growth. Unfortunately, growth has not led to economic development in many developing economies, necessitating intervention by such bodies as the United Nations, International Labour Organization and United Nations Development Programme. Economists are equally concerned about this development and have, therefore, conducted studies to show the relationship between economic growth and poverty alleviation. They generally agreed that growth is good for poverty reduction. …

Finance For Growth And Policy Options For Emerging And Developing Economies: Nigeria., W. Olayiwola, H. Okodua Dec 2011

Finance For Growth And Policy Options For Emerging And Developing Economies: Nigeria., W. Olayiwola, H. Okodua

Economic and Financial Review

The analysis in the paper clearly revealed that finance is important for a sustainable economic growth. It also shows that financial policies designed in various EME countries had the main aim of making the financial system provide financial functions. However, there are large differences in how well the financial system in each country performed these functions. Also, it is well noted that what matters to economic growth is access to financial services and not who supplies them, whether it is private sector as in South Africa and Nigeria or the combination of public and private sectors as in China. The …

The Central Bank Of Nigeria And Its Developmental Functions: A Review Of Current Initiatives., C.M. Anyanwu

Economic and Financial Review

The paper x-rayed the role of the Central Bank of Nigeria as an agent of economic development. The central bank impacts the economy via: ensuring monetary and price stability; management of external reserves; issue of legal tender currency; financial system management; the payments system; and developmental roles. Its developmental role has been given special attention in recent years with its intervention in the real sector. Monetary and price stability is a necessary but not sufficient condition for attaining higher growth rate and development. Other necessary conditions for the attainment of Vision 2020 include, but not limited to, harmonious and consistent …

The following volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were identified: ethyl acetate, acetic acid, 2-pentanone, hexanal, n-octane, 2-heptanone, limonene, nonanal, octanoic acid, ethyl octanoate, δ-octalactone, ethyl decanoate, δ-decalactone, and dodecanoic acid. Fermentation-produced samples were found to have higher levels of acetic acid and free fatty acids in the headspace compared to VCO produced using the centrifuge and expeller methods. Descriptive sensory analysis of the VCO …

Opacity Of P(Mma-Maa)-Pmma Composite Latex System With Varying Maa Concentration, Gilbert U. Yu, Jerry T. Dy, Erwin P. Enriquez Dec 2011

Opacity Of P(Mma-Maa)-Pmma Composite Latex System With Varying Maa Concentration, Gilbert U. Yu, Jerry T. Dy, Erwin P. Enriquez

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Polymer composites of core-shell morphology are commonly used in the paint industry as opacity enhancer. These are usually made of block copolymer systems wherein the core is formed from a polymer that swells in the presence of a solvent and surrounded by a high glass transition polymeric shell. Thus, upon drying, the swollen regions turn into voids while leaving a hard shell. Here, composites based on poly(methyl methacrylate-butyl acrylate) [P(MMA-BuA)] (seed stage), poly(methyl methacrylate-methacrylic acid) [P(MMA-MAA)] (second stage), and poly(methyl methacrylate) [PMMA] (third stage) were synthesized through a multistage sequential emulsion polymerization and their opacity was investigated. The second stage …

Toward A Constructive Engagement: Agricultural Biotechnology As A Public Health Incentive In Less-Developed Countries, Chidi Oguamanam Dec 2011

Toward A Constructive Engagement: Agricultural Biotechnology As A Public Health Incentive In Less-Developed Countries, Chidi Oguamanam

Journal of Food Law & Policy

Discourses on global public health crises, especially as they impact the less-developed world, focus mostly on the issue of access to life-saving drugs for needy populations. Also, they implicate the misalignment of global pharmaceutical research and development (R&D) agenda with the health needs of the poor. Equally attracting significant attention is the role of intellectual property in driving up the cost of drugs and exacerbating the drug access freeze to needy populations. More often, the conceptual strings of these discussions are woven around a complex interaction of themes, including those of globalization, the development narrative, and strategic changes in international …

Under their police power, governments regulate nuisances and take actions in emergency situations. For protecting humans, animals, and plants from diseases and other pests (jointly referred to as diseases), governments order inoculations, quarantine items and people, and seize and destroy property.' With respect to plants and animals, the United States Secretary of Agriculture is authorized to prohibit the importation and movement of items than may be infested. The Secretary also has the authority to hold, treat, and destroy items to prevent the dissemination of plant and animal pests. State governments take additional actions to prevent the introduction and dissemination of …

Current And Emerging Issues In The New Urban Agriculture: A Case Study, Kathryn A. Peters Dec 2011

Current And Emerging Issues In The New Urban Agriculture: A Case Study, Kathryn A. Peters

Journal of Food Law & Policy

Urban agriculture takes many forms, including individual gardens on privately owned land, neighborhood gardens, community gardens, and gardens located on church and school grounds, housing developments, and other publicly owned property. The most essential factors for successful urban agriculture efforts include land acquisition, zoning ordinances, access to affordable water, infrastructure, and support services such as education and outreach. Cities across the United States have formed task forces with the mission of making their cities more sustainable or strengthening the local food supply system; urban agriculture is instrumental in both of these missions. Major cities across the United States are recognizing …

The Tragedy Of The Horse, American Icon, Tim Opitz Dec 2011

The Tragedy Of The Horse, American Icon, Tim Opitz

Journal of Food Law & Policy

Whether a prohibition on slaughter improves the welfare of the American horse population is the focus of this article. At the time it was written, winter of 2010-2011, a confluence of Federal and State legislative action had ended domestic slaughter. These actions are detailed in the body of this article. Since 2007, the legal status of horse slaughter remained static. Just as Sir Isaac Newton's first law of motion explained, an object at rest tends to stay at rest. Legislative inertia is the perspective from which this article was originally written. However, Newton's first law also stated that the object …

Hegemonic Masculinity And Counter-Hegemonic Feminist Discourses For Peace, Marta B. Rodríguez-Galán Dec 2011

Hegemonic Masculinity And Counter-Hegemonic Feminist Discourses For Peace, Marta B. Rodríguez-Galán

Sociology Faculty/Staff Publications

Utilizing a pacifist feminist position, this paper looks at the relationship between ideas of masculinity and war, militarism and peacekeeping intervention. I argue that it is necessary to revise and redefine a pacifist feminist position, especially because, from this viewpoint, the current masculinist war-prone world order may best be combated by attacking its gender biases. In this context, pacifist feminists have often been challenged by non-feminists, but also by non-pacifist feminists who accuse them of drawing on essentialist notions of women as peace –makers. A non-violent attack on oppressive masculinity would need to be successful in disseminating a counter-hegemonic and …

Quantitative Comparison Of Cis-Regulatory Element (Cre) Activities In Transgenic Drosophila Melanogaster, William A. Rogers, Thomas M. Williams Dec 2011

Quantitative Comparison Of Cis-Regulatory Element (Cre) Activities In Transgenic Drosophila Melanogaster, William A. Rogers, Thomas M. Williams

Biology Faculty Publications

Gene expression patterns are specified by cis-regulatory element (CRE) sequences, which are also called enhancers or cis-regulatory modules. A typical CRE possesses an arrangement of binding sites for several transcription factor proteins that confer a regulatory logic specifying when, where, and at what level the regulated gene(s) is expressed. The full set of CREs within an animal genome encodes the organism′s program for development1, and empirical as well as theoretical studies indicate that mutations in CREs played a prominent role in morphological evolution2-4. Moreover, human genome wide association studies indicate that genetic variation in CREs …
