Malaysian Construction Firms : Motivation For Iso 9000 Certification, Implementation Effort And Firm Performance., Wang Hang Min

Student Works (2010-2019)

The mandatory requirement of ISO 9000 certification by the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) Malaysia has forced Malaysian Grade G7 contractors to adopt the ISO 9000 Quality Management System (ISO 9000 QMS). CIDB Malaysia contended that ISO 9000 certification can enhance the quality initiative in the construction industry and the organizational performance of construction firms. For a better understanding on the impact of ISO 9000 certification, this study examines the relationship between motivation for certification (internal and external motivation), implementation effort of ISO 9000 QMS and organizational performance (operational and business performance). This study used a questionnaire survey to collect …

Superplastic Boronizing On Duplex Stainless Steel (Dss) Using Compression Method., Yong Siu Fung Jan 2011

Superplastic Boronizing On Duplex Stainless Steel (Dss) Using Compression Method., Yong Siu Fung

Student Works (2010-2019)

The formation and growth of boride phases on duplex stainless steel (DSS) during superplastic boronizing (SPB) were studied in comparison with conventional boronizing (CB) from previous research. SPB is a surface hardening technique that combines boronizing with superplastic deformation. It utilizes the ultra high plasticity phenomenon in metal while carrying out boronizing in which boron atoms are diffused into the metal substrate to form hard boronized layer. The SPB process was conducted under compression mode at a strain rate of 2 × 10-4 s-1, at three different temperature conditions (1223 K, 1273 K, 1373 K) and strains (0.2 to 0.6). …

Enthusiastic Enforcement, Informal Legislation: The Unruly Expansion Of The Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, Amy D. Westbrook Jan 2011

Enthusiastic Enforcement, Informal Legislation: The Unruly Expansion Of The Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, Amy D. Westbrook

Georgia Law Review

The Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA) was enacted
over thirty years ago to prohibit bribery of foreign officials
by U.S. persons. In the last few years, the Department of
Justice (DOJ) and the Securities and Exchange
Commission (SEC) have dramatically expanded the FCPA
through a surge in its enforcement. Responding to
complex developments in law, the global economy, and
agency politics, the DOJ and the SEC have brought ten
times as many cases as in prior years, and assessed
hundreds of millions of dollars in penalties. At the same
time, the substantive reach of the law has been extended
through …

Noah's Curse: How Religion Often Conflates Status, Belief, And Conduct To Resist Antidiscrimination Norms, William N. Eskridge Jr. Jan 2011

Noah's Curse: How Religion Often Conflates Status, Belief, And Conduct To Resist Antidiscrimination Norms, William N. Eskridge Jr.

Georgia Law Review

Today, many devout Christian fundamentalists support
some state discrimination against gay people, on the
ground that full equality for gays would mean fewer
liberties for themselves. In its recent controversy with a
public law school, the Christian Legal Society argued that
it was entitled to state subsidies even though it violated
the school's antidiscrimination policy. The Society said it
excluded only "unrepentant homosexuals"-those gay
persons whose "immoral" conduct and degraded status
were directly linked to what the Society considered an
anti-Christian message.
Professor Eskridge demonstrates that the same clash
between equality for minorities and liberty for Christian
fundamentalists played out …

When Delegation Begets Domination: Due Process Of Administrative Lawmaking, Evan J. Criddle Jan 2011

When Delegation Begets Domination: Due Process Of Administrative Lawmaking, Evan J. Criddle

Georgia Law Review

In federal administrative law, the nondelegation
doctrine purports to forbid Congress from entrusting its
essential legislative powers to administrative agencies.
The Supreme Court developed this doctrine during the
nineteenth century to safeguard republican values
embedded in the Constitution. Over time, however, the
Court has loosened the doctrine's grip, permitting federal
agencies to wield broad lawmaking powers subject to
minimalist "intelligible principles" established by
Congress. The Court has defended this approach on
pragmatic grounds, arguing that Congress cannot perform
its essential legislative function without entrusting
lawmaking authority to administrative agencies. What
the Court has never adequately addressed, however, is the
extent …

Brooklyn's Thirst, Long Island's Water: Consolidation, Local Control, And The Aquifer, Jeffrey A. Kroessler Jan 2011

Brooklyn's Thirst, Long Island's Water: Consolidation, Local Control, And The Aquifer, Jeffrey A. Kroessler

Publications and Research

The creation of greater New York City in 1898 promised a solution to the problem of supplying Brooklyn and Queens with water. In the 1850s, the City of Brooklyn tapped ponds and streams on the south side of Queens County, and in the 1880s, dug wells for additional supply. This lowered the water table and caused problems for farmers and oystermen, many of whom sued the city for damages. Ultimately, salt water seeped into some wells from over-pumping. By 1896, Brooklyn’s system had reached its limit. Prevented by the state legislature from tapping the aquifer beneath Suffolk’s Pine Barrens, the …

Effect Of Clinical Laboratory Practitioner Licensing On Wages, Mary Hotaling Jan 2011

Effect Of Clinical Laboratory Practitioner Licensing On Wages, Mary Hotaling

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Professional licensing directly affects about 29% of U.S. workers and is considered a primary means to establish and maintain health care practitioner competence. Clinical laboratory practitioner licensing was largely ignored in the literature with only 2 studies 30 years apart that provided conflicting conclusions regarding wage effects. This research provided the first study of clinical laboratory practitioner licensing effects on wages after controlling for human capital and individual characteristics wage determinants. This nonexperimental correlational study extended the literature on licensing effects on wages, including women's wages and professions not uniformly licensed across 50 states. The theoretical foundation relied on the …

Female Students' Experiences In An Old Testament Bible Course At A Christian University, Janet K. Puls Jan 2011

Female Students' Experiences In An Old Testament Bible Course At A Christian University, Janet K. Puls

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Previous research has shown that 80% of college students have reported they are interested in spirituality. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore the experiences of female students while studying Old Testament scriptures as part of their required liberal arts curriculum and to describe how their experiences affected their lives, spiritually or in other ways. While there is a small but growing body of survey data about students' interest in spirituality, a gap exists regarding how or in what ways required biblical curriculum affects students spiritually at Christian liberal arts universities. Fowler's faith stages, Gibson's model for spiritual …

A Psychological Investigation Of The Expressed Attitudes Of Middle School Aged Adolescents Toward School Bullying, Jodi Marie Daly Jan 2011

A Psychological Investigation Of The Expressed Attitudes Of Middle School Aged Adolescents Toward School Bullying, Jodi Marie Daly

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

International research on bullying suggests that bullying is pervasive in schools and the workplace. Most researchers concur that bullying behavior is a disruptive factor to the social and educational well-being of students. Previous research, grounded in social and family systems theory, has indicated those who bully tend to be involved in self-destructive and delinquent behaviors. Additionally, in the only-large scale study on bullying behaviors, 29% of the 10th-grade student body admitted to being bullied that school year. Further, in a new study conducted by the Josephson Institute of Ethics, half of all high school students reported that they have bullied …

A Delphi Study Regarding Assessment Of Intelligence In The Presence Of Autism, Sara Spencer Jan 2011

The research questions underlying this study addressed tools professionals use to assess intelligence of children with autistic disorder, how tools are selected, the level of confidence in the accuracy of results, and what level of consensus exists among experts. This Delphi study used a panel of 20 autistic disorder experts and 3 rounds of surveys …

Examining Students' Reflections On Literacy Activities Focused On Poetry Reading And Writing, Celeste Long Jan 2011

Examining Students' Reflections On Literacy Activities Focused On Poetry Reading And Writing, Celeste Long

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Motivation, which is based on experience, is crucial in promoting literacy acquisition; however, little research has explored what children experience during literacy activities such as poetry reading and writing. This phenomenological study explored what elementary students experienced during literacy activities focused on poetry. Educational reform inspired by the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 is based on a narrow range of quantitative research and does not consider the multifaceted nature of literacy and the experiences of the learner. Bruner's psychocultural theory and the belief that an individual's experiences are the core of existence were the philosophical and theoretical frameworks …
