Translocation Effects Of Lcrv Extracellular Surface Residues And Regulation Of Lcrg Binding To The T3ss Of Yersinia Pestis, Thomas A. Henderson Apr 2011

Translocation Effects Of Lcrv Extracellular Surface Residues And Regulation Of Lcrg Binding To The T3ss Of Yersinia Pestis, Thomas A. Henderson

Theses and Dissertations

Yersinia pestis, the etiological agent of the plague, immobilizes the host's innate immune response by translocating proteins called Yops (Yersinia outer proteins) into the eukaryotic cytoplasm using a type III secretion system (T3SS) injectisome known as the Yersinia secretion complex (Ysc). The T3SS injectisome, in many ways, resembles a hypodermic needle, composed of oligomeric rings with distinct areas responsible for different functions and many of these areas share homology to the flagellar T3SS basal body inner and outer membrane rings. Starting with the cytoplasmic region of the inner membrane known as the C-ring, this is an area where secretion is …

Screening Synteny Blocks In Pairwise Genome Comparisons Through Integer Programming, Haibao Tang, Eric Lyons, Brent S. Pedersen, James C. Schnable, Andrew H. Paterson, Michael Freeling Apr 2011

Screening Synteny Blocks In Pairwise Genome Comparisons Through Integer Programming, Haibao Tang, Eric Lyons, Brent S. Pedersen, James C. Schnable, Andrew H. Paterson, Michael Freeling

Department of Agronomy and Horticulture: Faculty Publications

Background:

It is difficult to accurately interpret chromosomal correspondences such as true orthology and paralogy due to significant divergence of genomes from a common ancestor. Analyses are particularly problematic among lineages that have repeatedly experienced whole genome duplication (WGD) events. To compare multiple “subgenomes” derived from genome duplications, we need to relax the traditional requirements of “one-to-one” syntenic matchings of genomic regions in order to reflect “one-to-many” or more generally “many-to-many” matchings. However this relaxation may result in the identification of synteny blocks that are derived from ancient shared WGDs that are not of interest. For many downstream analyses, we …

Gas Embolic Factors In Cardiovascular Health, Eric L. Cutler Apr 2011

Gas Embolic Factors In Cardiovascular Health, Eric L. Cutler

Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Gas emboli are a clinical issue often encountered in the space exploration, marine construction, and medical fields.  Individuals involved with these disciplines will often have asympomatic gas emboli circulating throughout their bodies on a regular basis.  A study into the impact of chronic asymptomatic gas emboli on the risk of atherosclerosis in humans is thus presented.  This research utilized a custom built cardiovascular flow simulator and accompanying data acquisition system to experimentally determine the influence of gas emboli under varied circumstances on the mean wall shear stress of a tube in-vitro.  A directly inverse relationship between gas embolus presence in …

Peninsula Medical School

By studying mice in which the Nfatc1 gene was inactivated in bone marrow, spleen, or germinal center B cells, we show that NFATc1 supports the proliferation and suppresses the activation-induced cell death of splenic B cells upon B cell receptor (BCR) stimulation. BCR triggering leads to expression of NFATc1/αA, a short isoform of NFATc1, in splenic B cells. NFATc1 ablation impaired Ig class switch to IgG3 induced by T cell–independent type II antigens, as well as IgG3+ plasmablast formation. Mice bearing NFATc1−/− B cells harbor twofold more interleukin 10–producing B cells. NFATc1−/− B cells suppress the synthesis of interferon-γ by …

The Evolution Of Social Pain: Understanding The Neural Network Of Social Ostracism Through Electroencephalogram Waves, Daniel Kern, Joseph Williams, Faculty Advisor

John Wesley Powell Student Research Conference

The lack of belonging or frequent exposure to social ostracism has maladaptive psychological and physical consequences. However, little is known about the mechanisms underlying the neural processes of social ostracism. Previously, Williams (2009) showed a decrease in theta power in the frontal lobe when female participants were ostracized in a virtual chat-room. Using male and female Illinois Wesleyan college students, this study manipulated two powerful social cues (biological sex and attractiveness level) to determine their effect on prefrontal brain activity in response to social ostracism in a virtual chat-room environment. Using EEG technology, frontal theta power (4-8Hz) was measured using …

Monitoring The Electrochemical Activity Of Biological Samples Using Scanning Electrochemical Microscopy, Erica Woodall, Melinda Baur, Faculty Advisor Apr 2011

Monitoring The Electrochemical Activity Of Biological Samples Using Scanning Electrochemical Microscopy, Erica Woodall, Melinda Baur, Faculty Advisor

John Wesley Powell Student Research Conference

The goal of the project is to develop the Scanning Electrochemical Microscopy (SECM) as a tool to study the biological effects of oxidative damage on rat pheochromocytoma cells (PCI2 cells). SECM is a useful tool for the analysis of biological samples because the ultramicroelectrode tip of the probe can detect the presence of electrochemically active compounds such as neurotransmitters, particularly dopamine and norepinephrine, while simultaneously characterizing the topography of the cell. The topography of the cell was determined by maintaining a constant distance between the tip of the electrode and the surface of the cell. In the collector mode, the …

Prevalence Of Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus On Computer Mice On The Campus Of Southern Adventist University, Aldo J. Espinoza Apr 2011

Prevalence Of Methicillin Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus On Computer Mice On The Campus Of Southern Adventist University, Aldo J. Espinoza

Capstone Research Projects

Microorganisms are present everywhere in the environment. Unbeknownst to most people Staphylococcus aureus is a primary pathogen responsible for many skin infections and is carried by 25% of humans in the anterior nares. Due to the infective nature of Staphylococcus aureus, it is important to determine its prevalence on fomites by testing commonly used surfaces. For these reasons a research experiment was designed to determine the prevalence of S. aureus and Methicillin Resistant S. aureus (MRSA) in computer labs on the campus of Southern Adventist University during the fall semester of 2010. The research experiment was conducted in computer labs …
