Pathogen Induced Hypersensitive Response And Systemic Acquired Resistance In The Moss Amblystegium Serpens, Collin Elliot Bowman
Pathogen Induced Hypersensitive Response And Systemic Acquired Resistance In The Moss Amblystegium Serpens, Collin Elliot Bowman
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection
The moss Amblystegium serpens and the pathogenic fungus Pythium irregulare were used to study plant-pathogen interactions in a non-vascular plant. The major findings in this report include that P. irregulare does infect A. serpens but entire moss death was not noted, 25°C is the optimum temperature for P. irregulare appressoria formation, most appressoria were found on A. serpens leaves, and the SAR response within A. serpens seems to be reducing the number of P. irregulare penetrated moss cells. Future research on the pathogen defense mechanisms of A. serpens is important and promising. When we elucidate these complex chemical processes in …
Pharmaceutically Active Compounds In Residential And Hospital Effluent, Municipal Wastewater, And The Rio Grande In Albuquerque, New Mexico, Kathryn D. Brown
Pharmaceutically Active Compounds In Residential And Hospital Effluent, Municipal Wastewater, And The Rio Grande In Albuquerque, New Mexico, Kathryn D. Brown
Water Resources Professional Project Reports
This project investigated: 1) the contribution of pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs) from residential and hospital effluent sources, 2) resultant concentrations of PhACs in the Albuquerque Southside Water Reclamation Plant (SWRP) raw influent and treated effluent, and 3) concentrations of PhACs in the Rio Grande, which receives SWRP effluent. PhACs present in surface waters have been shown to adversely impact organisms (Jobling et al., 1998) and, in the case of antibiotics, perhaps increase resistance to these drugs (Ash, 1999; Eichorst, 1999; Guardabassi et al, 1998; Sternes, 1999). In this study, ten sample sites were identified and samples collected and analyzed for …
Performance Of A Green Roof Lysimeter In An Arid Climate, Rick Young
Performance Of A Green Roof Lysimeter In An Arid Climate, Rick Young
Water Resources Professional Project Reports
Green roofs, also known as living roofs or eco-roofs, are becoming part of American architectural and engineering design as a method of reducing stormwater runoff. Although soil roofs have been in use for as long as adobe bricks, modern green roofs have a larger-scale function. Modern green roofs are used to solve or mitigate a number of architectural and engineering, stormwater management and ecological problems, especially in urban settings with large impervious areas. The effectiveness of green roofs in reducing these problems has been studied primarily in wet to moderately wet climates; however, relatively little research has been performed in …
Listeners' Ability To Identify The Gender Of Preadolescent Children Across Multiple Linguistic Contexts, Sharalee Ann Blunck
Listeners' Ability To Identify The Gender Of Preadolescent Children Across Multiple Linguistic Contexts, Sharalee Ann Blunck
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to determine whether 20 listeners could identify the gender of 10 preadolescent children from speech samples. An additional aim was to evaluate whether listeners identified children more accurately when listening to speech samples when more linguistic context was available. The listeners were presented with a total of 190 speech samples in four different categories of linguistic context: segments, words, sentences, and discourse. The listeners were instructed to listen to each speech sample and decide whether the speaker was a male or female. In addition, the listeners were instructed to rate their level of confidence …

Economic And Environmental Sustainability Of Using Bio-Fuels For Small Nebraska Greenhouses, David M. Mabie
Department of Environmental Engineering: Theses and Other Student Research
The primary goal of this paper was to increase profitability in Nebraska greenhouses by using biomass fuels for heating instead of propane. Several different fuels were tested, including whole shelled corn, dry distiller’s grains pelletized, wood pellets and blends between each biomass. The main fuel focus was on whole shelled corn. Bomb calorimetry tests were performed on biomass fuels and their respective ashes. Several furnace and heat exchanger efficiency tests were performed, with cost effectiveness analysis for each fuel type. Emissions data was also collected for each fuel on carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, nitrous oxides, sulfuric oxides, and particulate matter. …

Wilms’ Tumor-1 (Wt1) Protein Expression In Glioma Cells Actuates Cellular Invasiveness- Identifying Its Target Genes, Archana Chidambaram
Theses and Dissertations
Previous studies in our laboratory demonstrated the expression of WT1 in a significant number of glioma cells and established its role in promoting tumor cell proliferation. Here, we noted the effect(s) of manipulating WT1 levels on the expression levels of genes that were previously shown to be regulated by WT1. We found no correlation between the expression levels of WT1 and PDGF-A, Snai1 and E-cadherin and a consistent inverse correlation between WT1 and IGF-1R expression in U251-MG cells. To ascertain whether the increased IGF-1R levels resulting from WT1 silencing could account for decreased cellular proliferation, we utilized siRNA mediated knockdown …
Public Policy, Long Run Growth And Economic Transition From Agriculture To Industrial Mass Production., Rudrani Bhattacharya Dr.
Public Policy, Long Run Growth And Economic Transition From Agriculture To Industrial Mass Production., Rudrani Bhattacharya Dr.
Doctoral Theses
It has been recognized that the heart of the development process lies on the transformation of an economy from traditional activities in agriculture to industrial activities. As emphasized by Lewis (1954), the movement of labor from primary sector to industry is conducive to the rise of economy’s savings and investment rate and thus fostering economic growth. The core of this paradigm is the historically observed rapid growth in today’s developed countries associated with expansion of industrial activities. It is well-documented by now that at least over a few centuries leading up to 1800 AD there was little change in the world …

Adherence Inhibition Of Cronobacter Sakazakii And Other Pathogens By Prebiotic Oligosaccharides, Plant Extracts, And Other Naturally Derived Molecules, Maria I. Quintero
Adherence Inhibition Of Cronobacter Sakazakii And Other Pathogens By Prebiotic Oligosaccharides, Plant Extracts, And Other Naturally Derived Molecules, Maria I. Quintero
Department of Food Science and Technology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
For most bacterial pathogens, adherence of the bacterium to the surface of the host cell tissue is a necessary first step for colonization and infection. Agents that inhibit adherence, therefore, could be useful for preventing infections. The goal of this research was to assess the anti-adherent activity of several food-grade prebiotic carbohydrates, plant extracts, and other naturally-derived molecules against enteric pathogens. First, the antiadherent effect of galactooligosaccharides (GOS), polydextrose (PDX), and a GOS-PDX blend was tested against two strains of Cronobacter “Enterobacter” sakazakii. When measured microscopically or by cultural methods, significant reductions in adherence (56% and 71%, respectively) of C. …
The Evolution Of Social Pain: Understanding The Neural Network Of Social Ostracism Through Electroencephalography, Daniel M. Kern
The Evolution Of Social Pain: Understanding The Neural Network Of Social Ostracism Through Electroencephalography, Daniel M. Kern
Honors Projects
The lack of belonging or frequent exposure to social ostracism has maladaptive psychological and physical consequences. However, little is known about the mechanisms underlying the neural processes of social ostracism. Previously, Williams (2009) showed a decrease in theta power in the frontal lobe when female participants were ostracized in a virtual chat-room. Using male and female Illinois Wesleyan college students, this study manipulated two powerful social cues (biological sex and attractiveness level) to determine their effect on prefrontal brain activity in response to social ostracism in a virtual chat-room environment. Using EEG technology, frontal theta power (4-8Hz) was measured using …
The Sick Person And Science: The Role Of Religion In Medicine And Modernity, Daniel J. Deweert
The Sick Person And Science: The Role Of Religion In Medicine And Modernity, Daniel J. Deweert
Honors Projects
The secularization thesis predicts that science will eventually render religion useless due to inherent incompatibilities. Modern discourses have created a similar conflict between scientific competence and more humanistic aspects of medicine. I will use the secularization thesis to analyze the unusual role of medicine as both a scientific discipline and a venture into the moral realm. Religion affects the way humans understand nature, which impacts the possibility of the scientific method as well as the role of the sick person in society. Though individuals have always been healers, institutionalizing healthcare through the creation of hospitals indicates a profound shift of …

Structural And Functional Studies Of Nucleotide Pyrophosphatase / Phosphodiesterase 6, Angela Howard
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Nucleotide pyrophosphatase/phophodiesterase 6 (NPP6) is a membrane anchored ectoenzyme initially expressed in the brain and kidney. It is the sixth member of the NPP superfamily. Currently, the superfamily consists of seven members, NPP1-NPP7. Each member was numbered according to the order in which it was associated with the family. The NPPsuperfamily hydrolyzes a wide range of substrates such as lipids, nucleotides, and their derivatives. NPP1, NPP2, and NPP3 hydrolyze nucleotides (and derivatives). NPP6 and NPP7 along with NPP2 hydrolyze phosphodiester bonds in lipids (and derivatives). Thus far, NPP4 and NPP5 have yet to be characterized in terms of which substrates …

Hoodoo Women To Robber Queens: Breaking The Bounds Of Ethnography And Female Subjectivity In Zora Neale Hurston's Circum-Caribbean Marvelous Real, Julie Lewis Lester
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Throughout her career as an ethnographer, Zora Neale Hurston sought to capture the performances that linked African American folk communities of the coastal South to those she encountered in the Caribbean. The conjure woman of New Orleans and the Mambo priestess of Haitian Vodou exhibited performances that dramatized shared cultural and historical memory. These embodied performances connected women's lives across the circum-Caribbean diaspora. By situating the conjure woman in the context of the Marvelous Real, Hurston created a fictive site in which the conjurer acts as the interlocutor of women's recollected narratives and showed how identity could be shaped more …
Comparisons Of Visual Versus Kinesthetic Mental Imagery In Soccer Players: An Eeg Study, James Collier Shepard
Comparisons Of Visual Versus Kinesthetic Mental Imagery In Soccer Players: An Eeg Study, James Collier Shepard
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Mental imagery has been shown to effectively increase sport performances. However, limited studies have examined the underlying neurological influence of mental practice, especially with team sports. The current study investigated whether electroencephalogram (EEG) patterns differ based on an athlete's ability to use mental imagery and if differences exist between the two types of mental imagery, visual versus kinesthetic, when mentally rehearsing specific soccer scenarios. Ten college elite soccer athletes and seven novices participated in this study. EEG data and self-rating were collected during mental rehearsal of three simple movements and three soccer scenarios applying either visual or kinesthetic mental imagery. …

Getting The Joke: Humor Effects On Information Sharing Of Political News, Courtney N. Meyers
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
This paper examines the role of humor in information sharing of political issues using social media. In an experiment with 164 participants from the University of Memphis, the effects of sharing and information seeking were tested using Stephan Colbert’s comedy, and the same story told as straight news. This research found people are more likely to pass along information using social media if the issue is told in a humorous way. Conversely, Colbert’s persona seems to effect information seeking rather than primarily interest.

The Aquarium Trade As An Invasion Pathway In The Pacific Northwest, Angela L. Strecker, Philip M. Campbell, Julian D. Olden
Environmental Science and Management Faculty Publications and Presentations
The aquarium trade moves thousands of species around the globe, and unwanted organisms may be released into freshwaters, with adverse ecological and economic effects. We report on the first investigation of the ornamental pet trade as an invasion pathway in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States, where a moderate climate and a large human population present ample opportunities for the introduction and establishment of aquarium trade species. Results from a regional survey of pet stores found that the number of fish (n=400) and plant (n=124) species currently in the aquarium trade is vast. Pet stores import thousands of …

The Effect Of A Treatment Program Utilizing A Humanoid Robot On Social Engagement Of Two Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Margaret Michele Maxfield
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the use of a robot (Troy) in a low-dose treatment protocol for two children with Autism Spectrum disorder. The efficacy of intervention was measured by comparing social engagement in two contexts: interactions with two adults and interaction with an unfamiliar adult. During the treatment, a robot was included in pseudo-triadic interactions with the clinician and the child. The robot was programmed to perform simple actions that imitated the actions of the clinician in an effort to engage the child. These pseudo-triadic interactions were incorporated into intervention over the course of a 16-session …
