Being Seen: An Art Historical And Statistical Analysis Of Feminized Worship In Early Modern Rome, Olivia J. Belote Apr 2011

Being Seen: An Art Historical And Statistical Analysis Of Feminized Worship In Early Modern Rome, Olivia J. Belote

History Honors Projects

Female saints in early Christianity found their place in public veneration often through violent means, martyrdom.  These saints, while publicly suffering in the imitation of Christ, were the original agents to navigate the gendered hierarchy within the religion.  Female saints created an avenue for later female worshippers to understand Christianity on a strictly feminine level.  Through the frescoed depictions of these female saints in 18 churches throughout Rome, this paper historically and statistically analyzes how the artistic representations of female saints added to or created a space for feminized worship.

Examining The Effects Of Ostracism On Neural And Behavioral Indices Of Cognitive Self-Regulation, Aaron B. Ball Apr 2011

Examining The Effects Of Ostracism On Neural And Behavioral Indices Of Cognitive Self-Regulation, Aaron B. Ball

Honors Projects

The impact of ostracism on a target individual produces a number of negative consequences, including deficits in cognitive functioning related to self-regulation and general cognition. While such effects have been acknowledged, there is a lack of literature regarding the effect of ostracism on action monitoring in particular. Action monitoring is a self-regulatory process in which participants ensure the accuracy of their responses to a task or situation, the authors hypothesized that it would be adversely affected by an experience of ostracism. The goal of the current study was to utilize event-related brain potentials to examine the relationship of these two …

Depicting Simultaneously Similarity, Diversity, Ancestry, And Admixture?, Peter J. Taylor Apr 2011

Depicting Simultaneously Similarity, Diversity, Ancestry, And Admixture?, Peter J. Taylor

Working Papers on Science in a Changing World

Can any depiction of genetic relationships among humans allow simultaneously for similarity, diversity, ancestry, and admixture (i.e., groups that had split mixing again)? I asked this question while puzzling over the messages conveyed by diagrams from the work of Tishkoff and collaborators on genetic variation among humans in and out of Africa. In this talk I present explorations of alternative depictions of human genetic variation keeping my initial question in mind. By the end I will have prepared the ground for an assertion that the very methodology of generating and depicting human ancestry privileges a racialized view of human diversity.

Resorbable Polymer-Hydroxyapatite Composites For Bone Trauma Treatment: Synthesis And Properties, Troy E. Wiegand Apr 2011

Resorbable Polymer-Hydroxyapatite Composites For Bone Trauma Treatment: Synthesis And Properties, Troy E. Wiegand

Department of Chemistry: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Contemporary therapies for hard tissue replacement involve allographs, where the donor and recipient are of the same species, or the use of xenogenic transplants.  Intraspecies materials are often in short supply and interspecies materials are subject to immunological barriers such as disease and tissue rejection.  Synthetic composites are unencumbered by these limitations.  Poly lactic acid (PLLA) and its copolymers have been used in medicine due to their ability to be resorbed by the body without adverse effects.  PLLA’s are currently most commonly used in resorbable sutures and gauzes, but there is increasing interest in using them in conjunction with hydroxyapatite …

Borch Department of Medicinal Chemistry and Molecular Pharmacology Faculty Publications

Background

Breast cancer is a collection of diseases in which molecular phenotypes can act as both indicators and mediators of therapeutic strategy. Therefore, candidate therapeutics must be assessed in the context of multiple cell lines with known molecular phenotypes. Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and curcumin (CCM) are dietary compounds known to antagonize breast cancer cell proliferation. We report that these compounds in combination exert a variable antiproliferative effect across multiple breast cell lines, which is synergistic in SK-BR-3 cells and triggers cell signaling events not predicted by the activity of either compound alone.

Methods

Dose response curves for CCM and DHA …

Identification Of A Phytase Gene In Barley (Hordeum Vulgare L.), Fei Dai, Long Qiu, Lingzhen Ye, Dezhi Wu, Meixue Zhou, Guoping Zhang

Publications

BACKGROUND: Endogenous phytase plays a crucial role in phytate degradation and is thus closely related to nutrient efficiency in barley products. The understanding of genetic information of phytase in barley can provide a useful tool for breeding new barley varieties with high phytase activity. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Quantitative trait loci (QTL) analysis for phytase activity was conducted using a doubled haploid population. Phytase protein was purified and identified by the LC-ESI MS/MS Shotgun method. Purple acid phosphatase (PAP) gene was sequenced and the position was compared with the QTL controlling phytase activity. A major QTL for phytase activity was mapped to …

Joint Attention Interventions For Young Children With Autism Spectrum Disorders: Caregiver And Child Actions And Transactions, Abigail Vo Apr 2011

Joint Attention Interventions For Young Children With Autism Spectrum Disorders: Caregiver And Child Actions And Transactions, Abigail Vo

Theses and Dissertations

Early intervention is a critical component of efforts to optimize outcomes for children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and their families. One promising target for early intervention is joint attention, an early developing social-cognitive competency that is foundational to many other social, communicative, and cognitive skills; and a core deficit in children with ASD. While joint attention interventions are gaining interest among researchers, many are limited by their failure to situate joint attention development within the caregiver-child relationship and to adequately examine child and caregiver outcomes and transactional processes. The purpose of this study was to examine changes in child …

The Look Of Leadership: Do Perceptions Of Facial Features Relate To Perceptions Of Character Traits In Political Candidates?, Erin Moseley Westrich Apr 2011

The Look Of Leadership: Do Perceptions Of Facial Features Relate To Perceptions Of Character Traits In Political Candidates?, Erin Moseley Westrich

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

By examining whether or not perceptions of facial features relate to perceptions of character traits in political candidates, this paper attempts to explore the implications of what voters look for when examining candidates based solely on appearance. Respondentsare thought tobe looking to put their trust in a representative to represent them fairly and wisely, the "trustee" representative, results are expected toshow respondents look for universal features that are perceived to be connected to perceptions of trustworthiness, honesty, leadership and competency. Respondents will be looking to delegate their political responsibilities to a representative that they assume to have similar interests, the …

Design And Modeling Of Infrastructure For Residential And Community Water Reuse, Shannon M. Killion Apr 2011

Design And Modeling Of Infrastructure For Residential And Community Water Reuse, Shannon M. Killion

Department of Environmental Engineering: Theses and Other Student Research

Water scarcity and deteriorating water infrastructure are of growing concern in the United States. The conventional methods of treating and transporting potable water and wastewater are being challenged as new technology creates opportunities for water reuse. Instead of simply replacing the current infrastructure for centralized treatment systems, alternatives such as dual distribution and decentralized treatment systems are being investigated as more sustainable alternatives.

Implementing dual distribution systems leads to benefits such as reducing the amount of water treated to potable standards and reducing freshwater withdrawals. A dual distribution system allows the non-potable demands to be shifted from the potable water …

Effects Of Xs® Energy Drink On Aerobic Exercise Capacity Of Athletes, Kevin M. Sheehan, Lynn K. Hartzler Apr 2011

Effects Of Xs® Energy Drink On Aerobic Exercise Capacity Of Athletes, Kevin M. Sheehan, Lynn K. Hartzler

International Journal of Exercise Science

A small increase in performance is often the difference between winning and losing for athletes, and energy supplements are marketed to give them a competitive edge. One such supplement is XSAlt 0174 Energy Drink which contains B vitamins, caffeine, taurine, and an herbal adaptogen blend. XSAlt 0174 Energy Drink is primarily designed and marketed as an alertness stimulus; however, it is also marketed to athletes as a performance enhancing supplement. We hypothesized that the consumption of XSAlt 0174 Energy Drink before exercise would increase aerobic capacity (an increase in Vo2max) and time to fatigue, and …

Effects Of A Caffeine-Containing Transdermal Energy Patch On Aerobic And Anaerobic Exercise Performance, Kenneth R. Dragoo, W. Matthew Silvers, Kelly E. Johnson, Eliseo A. Gonzalez

International Journal of Exercise Science

The use of caffeine-containing (74-mg) energy patches (EnP) offers a novel mode of caffeine delivery that may alleviate stomach discomfort associated with oral caffeine use. The purpose of this study was to use four separate tests to evaluate the effects of EnP use on aerobic and anaerobic exercise performance. Three separate moderately active college-aged sample populations performed either 1) cycle time-to-exhaustion, 2) Wingate (WIN), or 3) repeated sprints and one repetition maximum bench press using EnP and placebo patches (PlP). No statistical differences were found between EnP and PlP for all dependent variables (p > 0.05) except for WIN peak power, …

Accuracy Of The Omron Hbf-500 Body Composition Monitor In Male And Female College Students, Michael I. Pribyl, John D. Smith, G Richard Grimes

International Journal of Exercise Science

The Omron HBF-500 is an inexpensive body composition monitor that incorporates both hand-to-hand and foot-to-foot electrical impedance technology. At this time, studies examining the accuracy of the HBF-500 when estimating percent body fat (%BF) are scarce and if this instrument gains popularity due to its claimed precision, comparisons against validated techniques should be conducted. The purpose of this study was to assess the accuracy of the Omron HBF-500 body composition monitor using the BOD POD as a criterion. Forty-eight men and 33 women participated in the study (24.3±6.9 years, 171.0±10.0 cm, 78.4±18.0 kg, 26.6±5.1 kg/m2). Participants were asked to refrain …

Child Obesity In Context: Ecology Of Family And Community, Joel E. Williams Apr 2011

Child Obesity In Context: Ecology Of Family And Community, Joel E. Williams

International Journal of Exercise Science

Minority and low socioeconomic status groups have the highest rates of overweight and obesity. Children from these families face a greater risk for weight-related health problems such as diabetes, heart disease and cancer as compared to their non-minority and more affluent peers. Factors from the larger physical, social, and cultural environments, and within families, influence weight status among children. Many of these factors are yet to be identified and relationships among known factors are complex and not well understood. The National Institutes of Health and U.S. Department of Agriculture have proposed a research agenda for social and behavioral scientists to …
