In order to shorten the measurement time of biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), a BOD sensor based on yeast metabolism was developed. Local yeast, Indonesian Origin, Candida fukuyamaensis UICC Y-247, was used as a transducer. The yeast was immobilized as a thin film in agarose matrix with the auxiliary of Nafion® acting as the membrane for ion exchange process. The film was then attached to gold-modified glassy carbons and used as transducer on the working electrodes. The measurements were conducted by observing the depletion of glucose concentration using multipulse amperometric method and then converted to BOD values. Optimum condition was observed …

In this dissertation, I use autoethnography to retrospectively examine the development of a document submitted to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Specifically, I retrospectively examine my perceptions of the corporate history and corporate culture surrounding the development of the biotech product, how the history and culture influenced the company’s development of a Request For Designation (RFD) FDA submission, and how the RFD affected subsequent events in the company.RFDs are a relatively new type of FDA submission designed specifically for a newly added division within the FDA--the Office of Combination Products (OCP)--formed to evaluate combination products. Combination products are …

Multiracial Identity And Racial Consciousness: The Problem Of An Unencumbered Self, Gabriella Rose Beckles-Raymond Ms.
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Persons with multiracial identity are now the fastest growing minority group in both the United States and Britain. As the push to acknowledge, express and celebrate multiracial identities intensifies, the ontological status, meaning of multiracial identities and their relationship to monoracial identities is of increasing importance to our understanding of race relations in both countries. The dilemma that philosophers of race are confronted with is how to identify those persons impacted by racisms without reifying the concept of race and/or falling foul of presenting essentialized group categories. Models that seek to grapple with these ethical problems are typically, if not …

A Retrospective And Prospective Comparison Of Hungarian Children Who Have One Or Two Episodes Of Depression, Vanessa Panaite
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Early onset depression is associated with high recurrence rates later in life. Recurrent depressive episodes during childhood may be particularly problematic, if additional episodes have a scarring effect that hinders healthy development. Distinguishing between first onsets and recurrences has been useful in understanding adult depression. This distinction has seldom been examined in pediatric depression, in part because it is difficult to enroll adequate samples of children with recurrent depression. We conducted archival analyses of carefully-diagnosed pediatric probands with depression first onset between ages of 4 and 12. Probands who reported one depressive episode (N = 435) were compared with probands …

Explaining Volition In The Ta'aliqat: Avicenna's View Of Free Will, Anthony Ruffus
Explaining Volition In The Ta'aliqat: Avicenna's View Of Free Will, Anthony Ruffus
Theses
While a great deal of work has been produced on the free will debate amongst medieval Latin philosophers, very little has been generated in regards to the medieval Arabic world. As a prominent medieval Aristotelian, Avicenna’s Neoplatonically inspired philosophy greatly influenced his contemporaries. Accordingly, Avicenna’s contribution to the dialogue concerning free will deserves special attention. The ultimate purpose of this investigation is to enter into the academic discourse in hopes of advancing a broader understanding of Avicenna’s view of free will. Those few scholars who have presented Avicenna’s position on free will in the past have done so in one …

Darwin, Victorian Literature, And The Great Web: Analyzing And Dismantling The Human Superiority Complex, Farhad R. Anwarzai
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection
In my essay, I will argue that the discrimination and cruelty humans project towards other humans mirrors the discrimination and cruelty humans project towards other species. A moral justification exists behind the need to discriminate against another human or animal. Therefore, the concept of “morality,” which has long been thought to be the root of man‟s “higher” mental capabilities, and which is, I will propose, the cause of racism, sexism, classism, and speciesism, is not an advantageous, or “higher,” trait. Instead, “morality,” if we classify it in Darwinian terms, is a disadvantageous trait that could potentially lead to our devolution …

The Photofragmentation Processes Of The Closo-Carborane And The Local Structure Of Transition Metal Doped Semiconducting Boron Carbide Thin Films, Jing Liu
Department of Physics and Astronomy: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
I investigated the photofragmentation processes of various closo-carboranes in an effort to understand the radical-induced polymerization of the closo-carboranes (i.e., semiconducting film growth), based on their partial dehydrogenation during plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition. The chemistry of vacuum ultraviolet VUV assisted dehydrogenation processes of both the closo-carboranes and related closo-phosphacarboranes were compared by photoionization mass spectrometry studies. The dominant ion pairs were identified and compared with the energetics constructed by theoretical modeling for the possible dissociation pathways.
Transition metal (Mn, Fe, Co) doped boron carbides thin films produced by plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition of orthocarborane (closo …
