Development Of A Shore Profile Algorithm For Tidal Estuaries Dominated By Fine Sediments, Kimberly Collins Pevey
Development Of A Shore Profile Algorithm For Tidal Estuaries Dominated By Fine Sediments, Kimberly Collins Pevey
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this work is to generate a shore profile algorithm to be used in estuaries dominated by fine sediments. Numerical models are continually evolving to enhance the overall accuracy of results. However, the typical shore profile is defined as a vertical wall. This work defines the shore as a nonlinear profile which will provide more realistic models. A variety of shore profile equations were examined and tested against a field site, Weeks Bay, Alabama. The most applicable, an equation by S. C. Lee, was modified in order to calculate the entire shore profile length. The distance from the …

Effect Of Hunting Frequency On Duck Abundance, Harvest, And Hunt Quality In Mississippi, Elizabeth Anne St James
Effect Of Hunting Frequency On Duck Abundance, Harvest, And Hunt Quality In Mississippi, Elizabeth Anne St James
Theses and Dissertations
Waterfowl hunting is important historically, culturally, and economically in Mississippi and North America. I evaluated effect of hunting frequency (2 or 4 days/week) on duck abundance, harvest, and hunters’ perceived quality of their experience on Mississippi Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs). Neither relative abundance nor harvest of all ducks, mallard (Anas platyrhynchos), northern shoveler (A. clypeata), or green-winged teal (A. crecca) differed between experimental hunting frequencies. Duck harvest increased with hours spent afield. Hunters’ perceived quality did not differ between hunting frequencies but was greatest when hunters harvested > 4 ducks/ day and increased with harvest of larger sized ducks. I suggest …

Effects Of Tibial Tuberosity Advancement And Meniscal Release On Kinematics Of The Canine Cranial Cruciate Deficient Stifle During Early, Middle, And Late Stance, James Ryan Butler
Theses and Dissertations
Little research has been done to validate the biomechanical principles of tibial tuberosity advancement (TTA) throughout stance. The present study evaluates the effects of TTA on kinematics of the cranial cruciate (CrCL) deficient stifle during early, middle, and late stance. Cadaveric pelvic limbs were evaluated for the effects of TTA on kinematics under a load equivalent to 30% bodyweight and under the following treatment conditions: intact CrCL, CrCL deficient, TTA-treated, and TTA treated + meniscal release. Electromagnetic tracking sensors were used to determine tibial subluxation and rotation relative to the femur. Transection of the CrCL resulted in significant cranial tibial …
Empirical Studies Of Arundinaria Species For Restoration Purposes, Mary Catherine Mills
Empirical Studies Of Arundinaria Species For Restoration Purposes, Mary Catherine Mills
Theses and Dissertations
The research in this thesis concentrates on investigation of the ecology of Arundinaria species for restoration purposes. Arundinaria species are key components in the canebrake ecosystem that was once prominent in the southeastern United States. Arundinaria still occurs as an understory component of bottomland hardwood forests, but with intense agricultural development and urbanization over the past 200 years, canebrakes are now a critically endangered ecosystem with greater than 98% loss. Specifically the thesis addresses the establishment of Arundinaria with other plant species and site preparation techniques. This study indicated that A. gigantea planted into plots dominated by non-native plants benefited …

Biophysical Studies Of Gene Sequence G-Quadruplexes And I-Motifs, Jamie Marie Dettler
Biophysical Studies Of Gene Sequence G-Quadruplexes And I-Motifs, Jamie Marie Dettler
Theses and Dissertations
The treatment and/or prevention of cancer by selective down regulation of cancer causing gene (oncogene) transcription would represent a significant advance in the area of anticancer drug design. Non-canonical higher order DNA structures formed in oncogene promoter regions are novel targets for the modulation of oncogene expression. An obvious advantage of selectively targeting oncogene expression would be that general cytotoxicity would be minimized and the negative side effects of current chemotherapy approaches could be minimized or eliminated. To provide a foundation for the design of drugs that target oncogene promoter G-quadruplexes and i-Motifs, the basic understanding is required of the …
Analysis Of Conservation Practices In The Blackland Prairie Region Of Mississippi And Construction Of A Predictor For Locating New Sites For Conservation Efforts, Steven Cameron Hughes
Analysis Of Conservation Practices In The Blackland Prairie Region Of Mississippi And Construction Of A Predictor For Locating New Sites For Conservation Efforts, Steven Cameron Hughes
Theses and Dissertations
Mississippi’s Blackland Prairie has been reduced below 10% of pre-Columbian extent, with few conservation practices in place. To determine efficacy of current restoration practices, plant species at remnant sites were compared with those at restoration sites. Analyses using multivariate statistical approaches revealed no generalizable patterns among four available remnants versus two available restoration sites. Thus, the aim of this project shifted to evaluating methods of identifying Blackland Prairie remnants or potential restoration sites. Location data for Blackland Prairie plant species and potentially informative environmental variables were used to develop geographic information system (GIS)-based habitat models. The best models were selected …

Using Precision Agriculture Technology To Evaluate Environmental And Economic Tradeoffs Of Alternative Cp-33 Enrollments, Mark Dewitt Mcconnell
Using Precision Agriculture Technology To Evaluate Environmental And Economic Tradeoffs Of Alternative Cp-33 Enrollments, Mark Dewitt Mcconnell
Theses and Dissertations
United States Department of Agriculture’s Farm Bill conservation programs provide landowner incentives to remove less productive and environmentally sensitive lands from agricultural production and re-establish them in natural vegetation to achieve conservation objectives. However, removal of arable land from production imposes an opportunity cost associated with loss in revenue from commodities that otherwise would have been produced. The Habitat Buffers for Upland Birds practice (CP-33) under the Continuous Conservation Reserve Program is a targeted conservation practice designed to increase northern bobwhite populations in agricultural landscapes. However, establishing CP-33 buffers on profitable farmland may be incompatible with economic objectives of landowners. …

Stand Level Compatible Diameter Distribution Models For Red Oak-Sweetgum Complexes On Minor Stream Bottoms In The South, Wesley James Howard
Theses and Dissertations
Southern bottomland hardwood forests lack effective growth and yield predictive models primarily due to the complexity of the ecosystems. These models are important tools for relative comparison of management schemes and making sound management decisions to obtain optimal future yields. Starting in 1982, 150 red oak-sweetgum bottomland hardwood growth and yield plots were established in northern and central parts of Mississippi. These plots were remeasured in 1988, 1992, 1993, 2005, 2006, and 2007 along with the addition of new plots. A diameter distribution model was developed from stand level component equations constructed in a previous study (Iles 2008; Schultz et …

Systems Biology Modeling Of Bovine Fertility Using Proteomics, Divya Swetha Peddinti
Theses and Dissertations
Beef and milk production industries represent the largest agricultural industries in the United States with a retail equivalent value of approximately $112 billion (USDA, 2008). Infertility is the major problem for mammalian reproduction. In the United States approximately 66% of cows are bred by Artificial Insemination (AI), but only ~50% of these inseminations result in successful pregnancies. Infertility can occur either from male factor (spermatozoon) or female factor (oocyte) and male contributes approximately 40% of cases. Infertility costs the producer approximately $5 per exposed cow for every 1% reduction in pregnancy rate. In spite of its millions of dollars in …

Modeling Eurasian Watermilfoil (Myriophyllum Spicatum) Habitat With Geographic Information Systems, Joby Michelle Prince
Theses and Dissertations
Eurasian watermilfoil (Myriophyllum spicatum) habitat was predicted at multiple scales, including a lake, regional, and national level. This dissertation illustrates how habitat can be predicted for M. spicatum using publically-available data for both presence and environmental variables. Models were generated using statistical procedures and quantative methods to determine where the greatest likelihood of presence was located. For the single lake, presence and absence data were available, but the larger-scale models used presence-only methods of prediction. These models were paired with a Geographic Information System so that data could be visualized on a map. For the selected lake, Pend Oreille (Idaho), …

Functional Complementation Analysis Of Fungal Rtg2 Homologs In Saccharomyces Cerevisiae, Ercan Selcuk Unlu
Theses and Dissertations
Changes in gene expression in response to mitochondrial dysfunction are mediated by components of the retrograde signaling pathway. The mitochondrial signal is recognized and transferred to the nucleus by dynamic interactions between regulatory proteins Rtg2p, Mks1p and Bmh1p. Retrograde signaling genes have been well characterized in the budding yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae but very little is known about the retrograde response of other fungi. To identify retrograde signaling proteins in other fungi, the protein sequence encoded by the S. cerevisiae RTG2 gene was used to search for fungal homologs using NCBI BlastP and the T-Coffee Multiple Sequence Alignment program. We selected …
