“Drawing” Upon Your Students’ Creativity: Teaching (Your Subject Here) With Comic Books, Bruce Kessler

Mathematics Faculty Publications

During Spring 2009, Dr. Kessler created and published a comic book series that embedded math content into the story for 4th-6th grade students. The comics were well received in the classrooms at Cumberland Trace Elementary. Dr. Kessler contends that this approach to teaching and learning can be used in any content area, and is useful for engaging students who might not be as interested otherwise. This session will explore ways of utilizing the skills of your students to construct learning comics in your classes, regardless of the funds, technology, and artistic experience at your disposal. The session will include a …

Natural Gas Landowner Coalitions In New York State: Emerging Benefits Of Collective Natural Resource Management, Jeffrey Jacquet, Richard C. Stedman Apr 2011

Natural Gas Landowner Coalitions In New York State: Emerging Benefits Of Collective Natural Resource Management, Jeffrey Jacquet, Richard C. Stedman

Journal of Rural Social Sciences

Thousands of rural landowners in New York State have joined together to form grassroots organizations aimed at collectively bargaining with natural gas companies. The leverage afforded by acting collectively allows these landowner coalitions to potentially influence the economic, environmental, and community impacts of gas development across hundreds of thousands of acres. In-depth interviews with coalition leaders conducted for this article reveal the scope, motivations, and benefits of membership in these groups. Our work examines these elements using multiple frameworks for understanding collective natural resource management. The coalitions are primarily concerned with the advancement of private member benefits, while public benefits …

In this paper, replacing complete or partly of growth mediums with secondarily wastewater was studied. Lipid content of Neochloris oleoabundans grown in a 0.3 X SE medium and autoclaved secondarily treated wastewater mixture was 22.27 % (w/w). The maximum biomass concentration of N. oleoabundans grown in wastewater with no additional nutrients was 0.636 g/L with 33% (w/w) glucose. Two culture lines, MA, and NA were isolated within our laboratory and could grow in secondarily treated wastewater with no additional nutrients. The maximum biomass concentration of MA in batch culture was 0.860 g/L and the sum of glucose and xylose was …

A Minimum Spanning Tree Based Clustering Algorithm For High Throughput Biological Data, Harun Pirim Apr 2011

A Minimum Spanning Tree Based Clustering Algorithm For High Throughput Biological Data, Harun Pirim

Theses and Dissertations

A new minimum spanning tree (MST) based heuristic for clustering biological data is proposed. The heuristic uses MSTs to generate initial solutions and applies a local search to improve the solutions. Local search transfers the nodes to the clusters with which they have the most connections, if this transfer improves the objective function value. A new objective function is defined and used in the heuristic. The objective function considers both tightness and separation of the clusters. Tightness is obtained by minimizing the maximum diameter among all clusters. Separation is obtained by minimizing the maximum number of connections of a gene …

Linear Dynamic Model For Continuous Speech Recognition, Tao Ma Apr 2011

Linear Dynamic Model For Continuous Speech Recognition, Tao Ma

Theses and Dissertations

In the past decades, statistics-based hidden Markov models (HMMs) have become the predominant approach to speech recognition. Under this framework, the speech signal is modeled as a piecewise stationary signal (typically over an interval of 10 milliseconds). Speech features are assumed to be temporally uncorrelated. While these simplifications have enabled tremendous advances in speech processing systems, for the past several years progress on the core statistical models has stagnated. Since machine performance still significantly lags human performance, especially in noisy environments, researchers have been looking beyond the traditional HMM approach. Recent theoretical and experimental studies suggest that exploiting frame-torame correlations …

Aquatic Invertebrate Biomass And Community Composition In Greentree Reservoirs And Naturally Flooded Forests In The Mississippi Alluvial Valley And Interior Flatwoods, Justyn Richard Foth Apr 2011

Aquatic Invertebrate Biomass And Community Composition In Greentree Reservoirs And Naturally Flooded Forests In The Mississippi Alluvial Valley And Interior Flatwoods, Justyn Richard Foth

Theses and Dissertations

The Mississippi Alluvial Valley (MAV) contained vast bottomland hardwood forests into the 20th century. Humans cleared forests, and altered hydrology, yet the MAV remains important for North American waterfowl and other wildlife. To estimate standing crops of aquatic invertebrates as food in hardwood bottomlands for wintering waterfowl, I quantified dry mass of invertebrates in naturally flooded forests (NFFs) and greentree reservoirs (GTRs) during winters 2008–2010. The MAV had greater invertebrate mass in NFFs (x̄ = 18.39 kg/ha; SE = 2.815 [CV = 15.3%]) than GTRs (x̄ = 5.16; SE = 0.492 [CV = 9.5%]), compared with lesser masses in Mississippi …

Agricultural Conservation Buffers For Breeding Grassland Birds In Eastern Mississippi, Heidi Lynn Adams Apr 2011

Agricultural Conservation Buffers For Breeding Grassland Birds In Eastern Mississippi, Heidi Lynn Adams

Theses and Dissertations

Periodic disturbance in CP33 habitat buffers is required to maintain early-successional plant communities for grassland birds. However, effects of disturbance on habitat suitability and nesting success of grassland birds are unknown. Furthermore, the grassland bird community and reproductive performance in CP33 habitat buffers may be influenced by the landscape context (e.g., edge habitat, surrounding land cover). My objectives for this study were to determine how periodic disturbance and the agricultural landscape mosaic influence the breeding grassland bird community in buffers, and how these same factors influence grassland bird nesting success and density in buffers. Data collected during line-transect surveys conducted …

Multi-Objective Design Optimization Framework For Structural Health Monitoring, Danny Loren Parker Apr 2011

Multi-Objective Design Optimization Framework For Structural Health Monitoring, Danny Loren Parker

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this dissertation is to demonstrate the ability to design health monitoring systems from a systematic perspective and how, with proper sensor and actuator placement, damage occurring in a structure can be detected and tracked. To this end, a design optimization was performed to determine the best locations to excite the structure and to collect data while using the minimum number of sensors. The type of sensors used in this design optimization was uni-axis accelerometers. It should be noted that the design techniques presented here are not limited to accelerometers. Instead, they allow for any type of sensor …

Effects Of Phosphate Type, Antimicrobials And Processing Methods On The Quality, Shelf-Life And Sensory Characteristics Of Enhanced Catfish Fillets, Sovann Kin

Theses and Dissertations

Catfish fillets that were enhanced with salt and various phosphate treatments through vacuum tumbling or multi-needle injection were evaluated for yield, protein exudate (only tumbling), surface color, pH, cooking loss, tenderness, purge loss and shelf-life. An agglomerated sodium phosphate blend (AGSP) was the optimum treatment for both vacuum tumbling and multi-needle injection and was further utilized in conjunction with potassium lactate (PL) and/or potassium acetate (PA) through vacuum tumbling to determine their effect on the quality, shelf-life and sensory characteristics of enhanced catfish fillets. In addition, the combination of AGSP and PA+PL that maximized shelf-life was further utilized in conjunction …

Predominance Of Bacillus Anthracis In The Biological Population Of An Activated Sludge Reactor, Robert Frederick Hoyt Apr 2011

Predominance Of Bacillus Anthracis In The Biological Population Of An Activated Sludge Reactor, Robert Frederick Hoyt

Theses and Dissertations

The effects of heavy metals, endocrine disruptors, and other contaminants on activated sludge and wastewater treatment operations have been studied extensively. However, the potential for infiltration of bacterial species not native to activated sludge has not been extensively examined. This project investigated the effect of the contamination of activated sludge wastewater treatment systems by Bacillus anthracis. From a pure culture of Bacillus megaterium inoculations of two bench-scale, sequencing batch reactors with different solids retention times was studied. Microbial enumeration testing was initially done on the mixed liquor alone, but to further detail the Bacillus path through the reactor, further testing …

Ancient Mitochondrial Dna From Pre-Historic Southeastern Europe: The Presence Of East Eurasian Haplogroups Provides Evidence Of Interactions With South Siberians Across The Central Asian Steppe Belt, Jeremy R. Newton

Masters Theses

Studies of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) polymorphism have provided valuable insights for understanding patterns of human migration and interaction. The ability to recover ancient mtDNA sequence data from post-mortem bone and tissue samples allows us to view snapshots of historic gene pools firsthand, provided that great care is taken to prevent sample contamination. In this study, we analyzed the DNA sequence of the first hypervariable segment (HVSI) of the mtDNA control region, as well as a portion of the coding region, in 14 individuals from three collective burials from the Neolithic Dnieper-Donetz culture and three individuals from Bronze Age Kurgan burials, …

Assessment And Prediction Of Streambank Erosion Rates In A Southeastern Plains Ecoregion Watershed In Mississippi, John Jairo Ramirez Avila Apr 2011

Assessment And Prediction Of Streambank Erosion Rates In A Southeastern Plains Ecoregion Watershed In Mississippi, John Jairo Ramirez Avila

Theses and Dissertations

The Town Creek Watershed (TCW) is a representative area of the Tombigbee River Basin and the Southeastern Plains Ecoregion in Mississippi. The principal channel and four main tributaries have been included for several years within the MS Section 303(d) list of waterbodies biologically impaired due to sediment. The TMDL developed for TCW recommended that streams located near cultivated lands, road crossings and construction activities are a priority for streambank and riparian buffer zone restoration and sediment loads reduction. Development of remedial measures and future BMPs within TCW for reducing water quality impairment and downstream dredging costs requires identification of sediment …

Hydrologic Controls On Equilibrium Soil Depths, L. Nicótina, David G. Tarboton, Teklu K. Tesfa, A. Rinaldo Apr 2011

Hydrologic Controls On Equilibrium Soil Depths, L. Nicótina, David G. Tarboton, Teklu K. Tesfa, A. Rinaldo

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

This paper deals with modeling the mutual feedbacks between runoff production and geomorphological processes and attributes that lead to patterns of equilibrium soil depth. Our primary goal is an attempt to describe spatial patterns of soil depth resulting from long-term interactions between hydrologic forcings and soil production, erosion, and sediment transport processes under the framework of landscape dynamic equilibrium. Another goal is to set the premises for exploiting the role of soil depths in shaping the hydrologic response of a catchment. The relevance of the study stems from the massive improvement in hydrologic predictions for ungauged basins that would be …

Air Temperature And Winter Mortality: Implications For The Persistence Of The Invasive Mussel, Perna Viridis In The Intertidal Zone Of The South-Eastern United States, Lb Firth, Am Knights, S Bell Apr 2011

Air Temperature And Winter Mortality: Implications For The Persistence Of The Invasive Mussel, Perna Viridis In The Intertidal Zone Of The South-Eastern United States, Lb Firth, Am Knights, S Bell

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Global climate change and invasive species represent two of the biggest threats to the environment. Biological communities are responding to global climate change through poleward shifts in distribution, and changes in abundance and phenology of both native and non-native species. An increase in the frequency and magnitude of extreme weather events is predicted with global climate change. Much is known about mortality events of marine organisms in relation to warm thermal stress with relatively little known about cold thermal stress, particularly in the tropics. Intertidal species are particularly susceptible to fluctuations in aerial conditions and many are considered indicators of …

Red Oak Acorn Production, Mass, And Gross Energy Dynamics In The Mississippi Alluvial Valley, Alan Gregory Leach Apr 2011

Red Oak Acorn Production, Mass, And Gross Energy Dynamics In The Mississippi Alluvial Valley, Alan Gregory Leach

Theses and Dissertations

Acorns of red oaks (Quercus spp; Subgenus Erythrobalanus) are important forage for wildlife and seed for oak regeneration. I estimated production of viable acorns by red oaks in 5 forests in the Mississippi Alluvial Valley (MAV) and 2 greentree reservoirs (GTRs) in Mississippi. Mean acorn production in the MAV was 439 kg(dry)/ha of red oak crown (CV = 29%) during autumn-winter 2009-2010 and 794 kg/ha (CV = 19%) in GTRs during autumn-winters 2008-2010. I recommend researchers sample acorn production in the MAV for ≥5 years to improve precision of estimates (i.e., CV ≤ 15%). I estimated mass and gross energy …

Role Of Reactive Oxygen Species In Glioblastoma Multiforme Microsatellite Instability, Kortney Lynnette Wilkinson-Busha Apr 2011

Role Of Reactive Oxygen Species In Glioblastoma Multiforme Microsatellite Instability, Kortney Lynnette Wilkinson-Busha

Theses and Dissertations

Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is an extremely aggressive and almost always fatal brain tumor. GBM literature indicates defective mismatch repair (MMR) mechanisms are not involved in GBM tumorigenesis as in other tumors, and instigating mechanisms of GBM tumorigenesis remain unclear. GBM and neural progenitor (NPR) cells were exposed to three concentrations of H2O2 (0, 0.5, and 1.0 μM), cultured, and then harvested 0, 2, 4, and 6 days post-exposure; DNA from cells was amplified with microsatellite primers, investigating whether or not H2O2 exposure affected microsatellite instability (MSI) in target sequences. Three out of six markers showed significant MSI in the H2O2-exposed …

Nestling Provisioning Of Dickcissels In Native Warm-Season Grass Field Buffers, Kristina Lynne Baker Apr 2011

Nestling Provisioning Of Dickcissels In Native Warm-Season Grass Field Buffers, Kristina Lynne Baker

Theses and Dissertations

Grassland birds must have accessible, nutritional prey for nestlings which Conservation Reserve Program practices like CP33—Habitat Buffers for Upland Birds may provide. In 2008—2009, I monitored dickcissel nests in and around CP33 buffers at a farm in north-central Mississippi using video cameras to capture provisioning activities. I simultaneously observed foraging flights and measured distances traveled from nests. Orthopterans were the most commonly chosen prey, and dickcissels brought larger prey items when chicks were older. But, other changes in provisioning were not significantly related to nest age as I hypothesized. Also contrary to my initial hypotheses, provisioning at nests within buffers …

Oxidative Stress Induces Dna Strand Breaks May Lead To Genomic Instability In Ovarian Tumorigenesis, Harold-Humberto Moreno-Ortiz Apr 2011

Oxidative Stress Induces Dna Strand Breaks May Lead To Genomic Instability In Ovarian Tumorigenesis, Harold-Humberto Moreno-Ortiz

Theses and Dissertations

Oxidative stress (OS) occurs when DNA repair mechanisms are overcome by the amount of single and double strand DNA breaks caused by an accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Genomic instability (GI) by microsatellite instability (MSI) accumulation is characterized by changes in DNA single tandem repeats (STR) as a direct result of ROS. Deregulation of DNA repair and tumor suppressor pathways have been described as causes of tumor progression and metastasis. Studies in mammals have focused on GI and the implications of increased mutation frequency due to accumulation of MSI leading to development of diseases, including infertility and cancer. Ovarian …

Wildlife Habitat Quality In Southern Mississippi 8 Years After Intensive Pine Plantation Establishment, Tamara Nicole Campbell Apr 2011

Wildlife Habitat Quality In Southern Mississippi 8 Years After Intensive Pine Plantation Establishment, Tamara Nicole Campbell

Theses and Dissertations

I evaluated effects of 5 pine plantation establishment regimes 6 – 8 years postestablishment on loblolly pine (Pinus taeda) growth, vegetation characteristics, nutritional carrying capacity for white-tailed deer, and breeding birds in the Lower Coastal Plain of Mississippi. Treatments combined mechanical site preparation (MSP), chemical site preparation (CSP), and herbaceous weed control (HWC) designed to represent a range of operational intensities. Chemical SP provided greater long-term control of woody competition than MSP, but did not provide significant pine growth advantage. Vegetation richness, diversity, and structure were best maintained with MSP and year 1 banded HWC. Canopy cover appears to be …

Theses and Dissertations

This study’s purpose was to describe the disaster preparedness of licensed private veterinary practitioners in Mississippi. A mail survey was distributed assessing disaster training, response plans, and disaster-related organization knowledge. Individuals who have experienced a disaster are more likely to have a personal plan, a clinic plan, or both than those who have not. County residence along the Mississippi Gulf Coast showed 3.62 times likelihood of having a personal plan and 3.09 times likelihood of having a clinic plan than those in other districts. Many veterinarians failed to identify their local emergency management agency as their point of contact in …

Distribution And Management Of Invasive Plant Species In The Ross Barnett Reservoir, Michael Christopher Cox Apr 2011

Distribution And Management Of Invasive Plant Species In The Ross Barnett Reservoir, Michael Christopher Cox

Theses and Dissertations

A point intercept survey was conducted from 2005 to 2010 on the Ross Barnett Reservoir near Jackson, MS to calculate the frequency of occurrence of all aquatic plant species in the Reservoir. style='mso-spacerun:yes'> Water lotus ( style='mso-bidiont-style:normal'>Nelumbo lutea Willd.) was the native species that occurred most often, while alligatorweed (Alternanthera style='mso-bidiont-style:normal'> philoxeroides [Mart.] Griseb.) occurred most often with regard to non-natives. A logistic regression model indicated that as species richness increases, the probability of observing a non-native species also increases. Herbicide evaluations implied that the chemical imazapyr provided the largest biomass reduction in alligatorweed over a twelve week period; …

Dynamics Of Classical Particles And Quantum Spin Systems, Marta Licelis Guerra Apr 2011

Dynamics Of Classical Particles And Quantum Spin Systems, Marta Licelis Guerra

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation is divided in two parts. In the first part, we study the dynamics of a classical particle system. We calculate the efficiency of a rejectionree dynamic Monte Carlo method in the limit of low temperatures and/or high densities for d-dimensional off-lattice homogeneous particles interacting through a repulsive power-law potential r−p. Theoretically we find the algorithmic efficiency is asymptotically proportional to ρ (p+2)/2 T-d/2 with the particle density ρ and the temperature T. Dynamic Monte Carlo simulations are performed in 1-, 2- and 3-dimensional systems with different powers p, and the results agree with the theoretical predictions. In the …

Predicting The Spatial Distribution Of Forest Harvests In Mississippi From Landsat Tm Data: Accuracy And Characterization, Michael Bryan Jackson

Theses and Dissertations

Methods are needed to predict the spatial distribution pattern(s) of forest harvests to improve large-scale timber inventories through the incorporation of spatial distribution information. In this study, land cover type change detection methods were carried out using information from 1972 thru 2005 east-central Mississippi Landsat TM data to detect the spatial distribution of clearcut forest harvests. A random pattern was observed for clearcut harvests and this and other statistical data gathered in the study will be integrated into an existing forest inventory and transportation network database. The resulting harvested and forested area predictions generated by the database will assist with …

Predicting The Potential Distributions Of Major Invasive Species Using Geospatial Models In Southern Forest Lands, Yuan Tan Apr 2011

Predicting The Potential Distributions Of Major Invasive Species Using Geospatial Models In Southern Forest Lands, Yuan Tan

Theses and Dissertations

Former researches provide evidence that invasive species could alter ecosystem’s components, threaten native species and cause economic losses in southern forest lands. The objective of the project is to explore significant driving factors and develop geospatial models for monitoring, predicting and mapping the extent and conditions of major invasive species. In the study area, 16 invasive species were classified into four groups: regionally spreading species, regionally establishing species, locally spreading species and regionally colonizing species by population size and spatial characteristics. According to local Moran’s I, spatial autocorrelation existed in 16 invasive species. Autologistic model and simultaneous autoregressive model were …

The red imported fire ant (Solenopsis invicta)(RIFA) is a major pest in the United States, causing serious economic and human costs. This study explored the feasibility of using digital aerial remote sensing in multispectral/multitemporal detection and mapping of RIFA mounds. Comparison of photointerpretive mound counts versus ground control counts was performed within two grass types, common Bermuda and tall fescue. Flights collecting digital image data occurred at three intervals in 2009, with ground truth data collected collaterally. Poisson regression count modeling was first utilized for analysis of both datasets. Moran's Index geospatial analysis was applied following the Poisson model. Outcomes …

Deoxygenation Catalysis On Titania For Renewable Fuel Applications, Prashant Reuben Daggolu Apr 2011

Deoxygenation Catalysis On Titania For Renewable Fuel Applications, Prashant Reuben Daggolu

Theses and Dissertations

This research studies the use of class=SpellE>titania (titanium dioxide, TiO2) as a catalyst for deoxygenation of class=SpellE>syngas derived oxygenates. These oxygenates are formed as byproducts when biomass derived syngas (CO & H2) is converted to ethanol on Rhodium or Molybdenum based catalysts. Conversion of these oxygenates to hydrocarbon would enhance the viability of class=SpellE>syngas to gasoline technology. This study revealed that class=SpellE>titania can indeed be used to convert syngas derived oxygenates to hydrocarbon at high temperature and pressure. Acetone condensation to mesitylene was studied very closely. The study revealed that the acid-base dual nature of class=SpellE …
