Turning To The Bottle For Answers: Identifying Racial Differences In Predictors Of Risk Drinking Among College Women, Melody Mickens May 2011

Turning To The Bottle For Answers: Identifying Racial Differences In Predictors Of Risk Drinking Among College Women, Melody Mickens

Theses and Dissertations

Epidemiological data suggest that alcohol use and related problems have increased among college women. The current study examined psychosocial predictors of risk drinking in a sample of college women (N=360), whether race moderated this relationship. Potential predictors included: daily smoker; premenstrual syndrome (PMS) symptom severity; age at first alcohol use, negative affect, parental history of alcohol problems and minority status. Analyses found that somatic PMS symptom severity score, age of first alcohol use, daily smoking, age of first alcohol use and non-minority status were related. Findings suggest that minority group membership was associated with low risk drinking, while somatic PMS …

Cumulative Risks To Eastern Oysters, Crassostrea Virginica In The James River, Va, Vrushali Lele May 2011

Cumulative Risks To Eastern Oysters, Crassostrea Virginica In The James River, Va, Vrushali Lele

Theses and Dissertations

In an effort to apply Cumulative Risk Assessment (CRA) as developed by the U.S. EPA, the present study investigates the cumulative risks to Eastern oysters due to multiple stressors such as salinity, temperature and oxygen and carbon dioxide. I also compared the effectiveness of the Hazard Quotient Method (HQ) in CRA. Ambient conditions in the James River, VA were obtained from the Virginia DEQ database and respiratory responses were estimated using values from the literature. The multiple environmental stresses are evaluated using a probabilistic analysis that combines the environmental conditions. It was concluded that salinity was the most influential stressor …

A Novel Bioactive Glass-Enhanced Orthodontic Bonding Resin: A Shear Bond Strength Study, Cole Johnson May 2011

A Novel Bioactive Glass-Enhanced Orthodontic Bonding Resin: A Shear Bond Strength Study, Cole Johnson

Theses and Dissertations

Enamel decalcification caused by poor oral hygiene is a significant problem in orthodontics. Bioactive glass-containing resins have been shown to release Ca2+ ions into surrounding solution. The purpose of this study was to determine the shear bond strength of four different compositions of orthodontic resin prepared with bioactive glass (N=20). Premolars were bonded using one of four BAG-BOND compositions. Brackets were debonded and ARI scores were given. The mean shear bond strength was 7.23 ± 2.47 MPa (62 BAG-BOND), 8.25 ± 2.87 MPa (65 BAG-BOND), 8.78 ± 3.08 MPa (81BAG-BOND) and 5.80 ± 2.27 MPa (85 BAG-BOND). 65 and 81 …

Synthesis Of Fluorescent Analogs Of Neurotransmitters, Sharanappa M. Bagale May 2011

Synthesis Of Fluorescent Analogs Of Neurotransmitters, Sharanappa M. Bagale

Open Access Theses

Fluorescent analogs of biomolecules have been known as useful probes to study the structure, conformations and dynamics of cellular processes. These probes are more ideal than fluorescent labeled probes, as fluorescent analog probes retain the shape, size, conformation, and recognition element of the natural substrate, while giving useful intracellular information about detection and dynamics of biomolecules. The monoamine neurotransmitters control the central and periphery nervous systems. Serotonin (5-HT), in particular, is a versatile chemical messenger responsible for a multitude of biological processes, such as regulation of emotion, vasoconstriction, and bone metabolism. The study of serotonergic complex pathways is vital and …

The Role Of Sox9 In Heart Valve Development And Disease, Jacqueline D. Peacock May 2011

The Role Of Sox9 In Heart Valve Development And Disease, Jacqueline D. Peacock

Open Access Dissertations

Heart valve structures open and close during the cardiac cycle to provide unidirectional blood flow through the heart, critical for efficient cardiovascular function. Valve dysfunction results in either incomplete opening or incomplete closure of the valve. Both types of valve dysfunction decrease efficiency of blood flow, increasing the load on the myocardium and leading to secondary heart disease such as pathological hypertrophy and heart failure. There are currently no effective treatments to prevent or slow the progression of valve disease, and there are no pharmacological treatments for advanced valve disease. Although most valve disease is associated with aging, increasing evidence …

Context-Dependent Behavior, Reproduction And Brain Structure In Newly-Established Colonies Of The Primitively Eusocial Wasp, Mischocyttarus Mexicanus, Floria Mora Kepfer May 2011

Context-Dependent Behavior, Reproduction And Brain Structure In Newly-Established Colonies Of The Primitively Eusocial Wasp, Mischocyttarus Mexicanus, Floria Mora Kepfer

Open Access Dissertations

Reproductive division of labor is the most distinctive characteristic of the social Hymenoptera; some individuals reproduce and others forego their own reproduction to raise non-descendant offspring. In species where females are reproductively totipotent and lack morphologically distinct castes, there is potential for reproductive conflict because more than one female in a colony may attempt direct reproduction. I focused my dissertation research on a subtropical population of the primitively eusocial paper wasp, Mischocyttarus mexicanus, to investigate the initiation, establishment, and development of the colony before the emergence of adult offspring. Female M. mexicanus exhibit variation in behavior and task performance, and …

A Generalized Flow Regime Diagram For Fluid-Solid Vertical Transport, Xiaotao T. Bi May 2011

A Generalized Flow Regime Diagram For Fluid-Solid Vertical Transport, Xiaotao T. Bi

10th International Conference on Circulating Fluidized Beds and Fluidization Technology - CFB-10

An ideal generalized flow regime diagram was proposed for fluid-solids vertical transport systems with no bottom and top restrictions. Such an ideal flow regime diagram was further extended to shed light onto the understanding of the flow regimes and instabilities encountered in bottom- restricted bubbling and circulating fluidized bed systems.

Effective And Affordable Novel Arsenic Removal Technology, Benadin Varajic May 2011

Effective And Affordable Novel Arsenic Removal Technology, Benadin Varajic

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Arsenic contaminated drinking water is a serious worldwide issue faced by millions of people every day. Long term exposure to arsenic levels above the World Health Organization’s (WHO) standard of 10 ppb has been associated with severe detrimental health effects including cardiovascular disease and cancer. Although current water purification technologies exist, their implementation is an unrealistic goal by many third world nations for a variety of reasons, the most common being the cost associated with what are typically complicated procedures. This study strives to discover an effective and affordable novel arsenic removal technology.

The first step of this study was …

Comparative Analysis Research Of Robotic Assisted Laparoscopic Prostatectomy, Jonathan Barlaan, Huy Nguyen May 2011

Comparative Analysis Research Of Robotic Assisted Laparoscopic Prostatectomy, Jonathan Barlaan, Huy Nguyen

Honors Thesis and Capstone Projects

Introduction: The goal of laparoscopic prostatectomy is to excise the cancer completely, provide good urinary continence post-operatively, and maintain the ability to have erections after the surgery, if present prior to surgery. Robotic assisted laparoscopic prostatectomy is a procedure performed with the assistance of a surgical robot that provides improved magnified vision in order to help achieve these goals while minimizing surgical incisions. With experience in performing this type of procedure, surgical doctors should be able to reduce operating time, blood loss, and margin error.

Methods: We reviewed the records of 200 patients who underwent treatment between July 2008 and …
