Septin Filaments Exhibit A Dynamic, Paired Organization That Is Conserved From Yeast To Mammals, Bradley S. Demay, Xiaobo Bai, Louisa Howard, Patricia Occhipinti, Rebecca A. Meseroll, Elias T. Spiliotis, Rudolf Oldenbourg, Amy S. Gladfelter

Dartmouth Scholarship

The septins are conserved, GTP-binding proteins important for cytokinesis, membrane compartmentalization, and exocytosis. However, it is unknown how septins are arranged within higher-order structures in cells. To determine the organization of septins in live cells, we developed a polarized fluorescence microscopy system to monitor the orientation of GFP dipole moments with high spatial and temporal resolution. When GFP was fused to septins, the arrangement of GFP dipoles reflected the underlying septin organization. We demonstrated in a filamentous fungus, a budding yeast, and a mammalian epithelial cell line that septin proteins were organized in an identical highly ordered fashion. Fluorescence anisotropy …

Analysis Of Nfi-X3 And Stat3 Interaction And Its Functions, Etsegenet Tizazu May 2011

Analysis Of Nfi-X3 And Stat3 Interaction And Its Functions, Etsegenet Tizazu

Theses and Dissertations

YKL-40 is a secreted protein that is highly up-regulated in malignant glioblastoma (GBM). Its expression is correlated with the invasive nature of GBMs and poor diagnosis of patients (Nigro et al., 2005). Previous research has shown that in astrocytes and GBM cells, YKL-40 expression is regulated by two transcription factors, NFI-X3 and STAT3, which form a complex with each other (Singh et al., 2011). Here, we show that the N-terminal domain of NFI-X3 is sufficient and required for its interaction with STAT3. We also show that the DNA-binding domain of NFI-X3 is required to induce YKL-40 expression. Thus, the interaction …

Computational Modeling Of Mulitsensory Processing Using Network Of Spiking Neurons, Hun Ki Lim May 2011

Computational Modeling Of Mulitsensory Processing Using Network Of Spiking Neurons, Hun Ki Lim

Theses and Dissertations

Multisensory processing in the brain underlies a wide variety of perceptual phenomena, but little is known about the underlying mechanisms of how multisensory neurons are generated and how the neurons integrate sensory information from environmental events. This lack of knowledge is due to the difficulty of biological experiments to manipulate and test the characteristics of multisensory processing. By using a computational model of multisensory processing this research seeks to provide insight into the mechanisms of multisensory processing. From a computational perspective, modeling of brain functions involves not only the computational model itself but also the conceptual definition of the brain …

The Impact Of Overt And Relational Victimization On Adolescents' Well Being: Moderating Effects Of Ethnicity At The Individual And School Level, Krista Mehari May 2011

The Impact Of Overt And Relational Victimization On Adolescents' Well Being: Moderating Effects Of Ethnicity At The Individual And School Level, Krista Mehari

Theses and Dissertations

The sociocultural influence of ethnicity on peer victimization among youth has received little attention in the research literature. Individual ethnicity within school ethnic composition may influence the frequency of victimization and the effect of victimization on adolescents’ well being. The current study investigated these issues using a data set of 5,581 sixth grade students attending 37 schools located in four sites. Multilevel models examined the extent to which individual ethnicity within school ethnic composition influenced the frequency and impact of overt and relational victimization on changes in life satisfaction. Ethnic differences were found in the frequency of victimization, but these …

Effects Of Bulimia Nervosa On The Voice: A Guide For Voice Teachers, Juanita Marchand Knight May 2011

Effects Of Bulimia Nervosa On The Voice: A Guide For Voice Teachers, Juanita Marchand Knight

Open Access Dissertations

The purpose of this essay is to compile a list of symptoms to aid voice teachers in the early detection of vocal problems resulting from bulimic behavior. Bulimia nervosa (BN) is an eating disorder characterized by bingeing and purging and has a high rate of occurrence among the college population. Entertainers form a high risk group for development of BN yet the effects of BN on the voice are largely ignored in vocal literature. The study begins with a literature review which links several factors that can influence the development of BN with "the singer’s personality." The two main character …

Hydrodynamics Of Conical Spouted Beds With High Density Particles, Salih Sari, Aylin Polat, Dokugan Zaglamaris, Gorkem Kulah, Murat Koksal May 2011

Hydrodynamics Of Conical Spouted Beds With High Density Particles, Salih Sari, Aylin Polat, Dokugan Zaglamaris, Gorkem Kulah, Murat Koksal

10th International Conference on Circulating Fluidized Beds and Fluidization Technology - CFB-10

An extensive experimental investigation of conical spouted beds with high density particles were carried out by measuring bed pressure drop, particle velocity and solids hold-up in a 15 cm ID conical spouted bed at three different cone angles (30°, 45°, 60°) with Yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) particles (ρp = 6050 kg/m3). The results show that the minimum external spouting velocity increases with cone angle, particle diameter and static bed height. The bed is characterized by two regions: upward moving particles with high slip in the spout and slowly downward moving particles at loosely packed conditions in the annulus.

Experiments And Modelling Of Micro-Jet Assisted Fluidization Of Nanopowder, Ruud Van Ommen, David M. King, Alan Weimer, Robert Pfeffer, Berend Van Wachem, Samantha Johnson, Niels Looije

10th International Conference on Circulating Fluidized Beds and Fluidization Technology - CFB-10

The fluidization of nanoparticle agglomerates can be largely improved by using downward pointing micronozzles, creating a high-velocity jet, as experimentally shown. By discrete particle simulations – treating the agglomerates as single particles – we show that the microjet strongly reduces the amount of gas in voids.

Design Criteria Of Uniflow Cyclones For The Separation Of Solid Particles From Gases, Ulrich Muschelknautz, Paul Pattis, Michael Reinalter, Michael Kraxner

10th International Conference on Circulating Fluidized Beds and Fluidization Technology - CFB-10

The main advantages of uniflow cyclones compared to standard reverse flow cyclones are their compact design and their capability of being easily integrated into pipelines. Experiments show that a 0.2m-diameter horizontal uniflow cyclone re-moves 88.6% of 2 g/m3 of fine mineral powder (d10=3m, d50=20m) from 1000 m3/h air at a pressure loss of 2510 Pa (0.364 psi).

Hydrodynamics Of A Cluster Descending At The Wall Of A Cfb Riser - Numerical Study, John R. Grace, Subhashini Vashisth

10th International Conference on Circulating Fluidized Beds and Fluidization Technology - CFB-10

The incompressible hydrodynamics of a single parabolic cluster descending at the wall of a CFB riser was numerically simulated using a 2-D Eulerian-Granular model and a segregated time-dependent unsteady solver. Numerical predictions of the velocity of descent and the evolution of cluster shape are in reasonable agreement with experimental results available in the literature.

The Passion For The Goddess; A Comparative Study On The Reverence Of The Goddess In Contemporary America And Ancient Mesopotamia, Sierra Helm May 2011

The Passion For The Goddess; A Comparative Study On The Reverence Of The Goddess In Contemporary America And Ancient Mesopotamia, Sierra Helm

Honors Senior Capstones and Theses

Through a comparative study of contemporary America and ancient Mesopotamia, the devotional practices directed towards the goddess Inanna in ancient Mesopotamia and towards celebrities in present-day America are analyzed. Celebrities have replaced Inanna in terms of representing exceptional figures exemplifying certain qualities--qualities of motherhood, fertility, sexual appeal, wisdom, intelligence, and even that of the warrior--once associated with the ancient goddess. The position of women within these cultures is an important aspect of the research. In ancient Mesopotamia, the position of women decreased over the millennia, from 4000 BCE to 1000 BCE, in which the people of Sumer, Akkadia, Assyria, and …

Set: The Probabilities And Possibilities, Tabitha K. Bollinger

Undergraduate Theses and Capstone Projects

The card game SET involves finding groups o f three cards called SETs. Choices are based upon the individual card characteristics, including shape, pattern, number, and color. Previously, the maximum number o f cards that can be played without creating a SET has been determined as 20 cards by extensive computer work. This report further explored the probabilities and possibilities o f the game. Using discrete mathematics and probability, we explored how many SETs are possible and what strategies led to the most points. Additionally, this project exercised undergraduate logic and reasoning to generalize the results in order to be …

The History Of Zoological Gardens And The State, Federal And International Laws That Govern Them, Morgan Maxwell May 2011

The History Of Zoological Gardens And The State, Federal And International Laws That Govern Them, Morgan Maxwell

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

The history of zoos in North America can be traced back through 18th century Europe to ancient civilizations such as the Romans. The menageries of ancient Rome were far different from modern zoos that stress conservation, education, and research as primary objectives. Zoos are still evolving and changing to become more suitable for captive animals and to ensure their animals’ health and well-being. An examination of state wildlife laws reveals that there are more laws that pertain to wildlife at the state and local level than at any other level of government. Federal wildlife laws are few in number and …

Changes In Leaf Morphology, Photosynthesis And Nitrogen Content In Two Coastal Shrubs, Elizabeth Kost May 2011

Changes In Leaf Morphology, Photosynthesis And Nitrogen Content In Two Coastal Shrubs, Elizabeth Kost

Theses and Dissertations

It is important to understand mechanisms that facilitate expansion of two common shrubs, Morella cerifera and Baccharis halimifolia in coastal environments. The purpose of my study was to investigate the physiological and structural changes that occur as leaves age. Photosynthesis, incident light, chlorophyll, and leaf C:N ratios were quantified for young, intermediate, and old leaves (distal, central and proximal leaves, respectively). Leaf structural differences were also compared. Leaves did not change morphologically with age. Light decreased with leaf age and during winter months. Photosynthesis showed no seasonal or age related patterns. Chlorophyll increased initially and then declined with age due …

Global Geometric Affinity For Revealing High Fidelity Protein Interaction Network., Yi Fang, William Benjamin, Mengtian Sun, Karthik Ramani May 2011

Global Geometric Affinity For Revealing High Fidelity Protein Interaction Network., Yi Fang, William Benjamin, Mengtian Sun, Karthik Ramani

School of Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

Protein-protein interaction (PPI) network analysis presents an essential role in understanding the functional relationship among proteins in a living biological system. Despite the success of current approaches for understanding the PPI network, the large fraction of missing and spurious PPIs and a low coverage of complete PPI network are the sources of major concern. In this paper, based on the diffusion process, we propose a new concept of global geometric affinity and an accompanying computational scheme to filter the uncertain PPIs, namely, reduce the spurious PPIs and recover the missing PPIs in the network. The main concept defines a diffusion …

All Dugoni School of Dentistry Faculty Articles

Chlamydia trachomatis is an obligate intracellular bacterium that causes a diversity of severe and debilitating diseases worldwide. Sporadic and ongoing outbreaks of lymphogranuloma venereum (LGV) strains among men who have sex with men (MSM) support the need for research on virulence factors associated with these organisms. Previous analyses have been limited to single genes or genomes of laboratory-adapted reference strain L2/434 and outbreak strain L2b/UCH-1/proctitis. We characterized an unusual LGV strain, termed L2c, isolated from an MSM with severe hemorrhagic proctitis. L2c developed nonfusing, grape-like inclusions and a cytotoxic phenotype in culture, …
