Wildlife Biology Faculty Publications

Boreal species sensitive to the timing and duration of snow cover are particularly vulnerable to global climate change. Recent work has shown a link between wolverine (Gulo gulo) habitat and persistent spring snow cover through 15 May, the approximate end of the wolverine’s reproductive denning period. We modeled the distribution of snow cover within the Columbia, Upper Missouri, and Upper Colorado River Basins using a downscaled ensemble climate model. The ensemble model was based on the arithmetic mean of 10 global climate models (GCMs) that best fit historical climate trends and patterns within these three basins. Snow cover was estimated …

Direct Interaction Of Flix And Flbd Is Required For Their Regulatory Activity In Caulobacter Crescentus, Zhaohui Xu, Rachel J. Dutton, James W. Gober

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Background: The temporal and spatial expression of late flagellar genes in Caulobacter crescentus is activated by the transcription factor FlbD and its partner trans-acting factor FliX. The physical interaction of these two proteins represents an alternative mechanism for regulating the activity of sigma(54) transcription factors. This study is to characterize the interaction of the two proteins and the consequences of the interaction on their regulatory activity. Results: FliX and FlbD form stable complexes, which can stand the interference of 2.65 M NaCl. The stability of FliX and FlbD was affected by the co-existence of each other. Five FliX mutants (R71A, …

Student Theses and Dissertations

This study measured the genetic differentiation among populations of Phragmatopoma californica and compared this genetic structuring with another polychaete species (Neries grubei) having a different life history. A total of 234 samples from 13 populations of the sabelleriid polychaete Phragmatapoma californica (Fewkes) from six mainland sites along the southern California coast and two Channel Islands were studied by way of inter simple sequence repeats (ISSRs) to determine genetic diversity, divergence and to estimate gene flow among populations. The results were compared to another polycheate species, Neries grubei which has a shorter larval development than P. californica, reducing potential dispersal and …

Desorption Of Volatiles From Solid Phase Micro-Extraction Using A Nd:Yag Laser, Bret Allen Yount May 2011

Desorption Of Volatiles From Solid Phase Micro-Extraction Using A Nd:Yag Laser, Bret Allen Yount

Student Theses and Dissertations

This work investigates the use of a Q-switched neodymium doped yttrium aluminum garnet type laser (Nd:YAG) to rapidly desorb carbowax/poly-ethylene glycol coated Solid Phase Micro-Extraction (SPME) and introduce volatile samples to a GC-MS. Specifically, effort is made to reduce desorption cycle time from an order of minutes to seconds, enhance SPME lifetime by minimizing degradation of coating material during desorption, and reduce overall desorption energy and size requirements while also minimizing the concern for SPME oxidation in air. Experiments with a 1064 nm laser pulse, utilizing both toluene and DNT as the compound of interest, demonstrate that laser pulses can …

Modulation Of Hypoglossal Motoneurons By Nitric Oxide, Justin Philip Benoit May 2011

Modulation Of Hypoglossal Motoneurons By Nitric Oxide, Justin Philip Benoit

Master's Theses

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA)- the occurrence of repetitive episodes of airway obstruction during sleep- is considered a major health problem affecting up to 9% of adults in the United States (Parish & Somers, 2004). The hypoglossal motor nucleus (HMN) controls genioglossus muscle tone and is critically important for maintaining airway patency; loss of excitatory input to the HMN during sleep results in disfacilitation of hypoglossal motoneurons, increased airway resistance and contributes to the development of OSA (Horner R. L., 2007). However, a fundamental question of sleep medicine that remains unresolved is what mechanisms help maintain airway patency during sleep? A …

The Natural Polyphenol Resveratrol Potentiates The Lethality Of Hdac Inhibitors In Acute Myelogenous Leukemia Cells Through Multiple Mechanisms., Alae Abod Yaseen

Theses and Dissertations

This study examined the mechanisms underlying the interactions between the natural polyphenol Resveratrol and HDAC inhibitors in both U937 myelomonocytic leukemia cell line and blood samples from AML patients and normal cord blood. Simultaneous exposure to Resveratrol and HDAC inhibitors (Vorinostat-SAHA or Panobinostat-LBH589) resulted in potentiating the lethality caused by any single agent of the combination, this interaction found to be synergistic at multiple concentrations. Exposing U937 cells to minimal toxic doses of Resveratrol and HDACIs results in release of mitochondrial pro-apoptotic proteins AIF and cytochrome c, pro-apoptotic caspase activation especially caspase-8, and induction of DNA damage. These events were …

Defining The Bacterial Flora Of Periodontal Pockets In Chronic Periodontitis Patients, Rafael Rodriguez May 2011

Defining The Bacterial Flora Of Periodontal Pockets In Chronic Periodontitis Patients, Rafael Rodriguez

Theses and Dissertations

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to describe the subgingival bacterial biodiversity in untreated chronic periodontitis patients through the use of next generation 16S rRNA molecular analysis, and to determine similarities or differences between deep and shallow pockets within the same patients. METHODS: The analysis involved paired subgingival plaque samples from 24 subjects diagnosed with Generalized Moderate to Severe Chronic Periodontitis. One sample was selected from a single site having a probing depth >5 mm (i.e. Deep Site), and the other from a site with a probing depth <3mm (i.e. Shallow Site) within each subject. Bacterial DNA amplification of the V4-V6 region of the 16S rRNA was performed. The amplicons were sequenced via 454 Roche Genome Sequencer FLX System. The identified sequences were evaluated, and then compared to calculated false discovery rates. RESULTS: A total of 119 independent microbial genera were identified within the samples analyzed. Seven genera were identified to be statistically significant (p<0.05) in their association to deep or shallow sites following t-test and boot strap randomization: Actinomyces (p=0.004), Methylobacterium (p=0.028), Veillonella (p=0.028), and Rothia (p=0.038), and Streptococcus (p=0.033) in Shallow sites; while Mycoplasma (p=0.007) and Fusobacterium (p=0.016) were associated with deep sites. However, taking into account the calculated false discovery rates, it is suggested that none of the 119 microbial genera identified in this study were significantly associated with either deep nor shallow sites. CONCLUSION: The microbial genera identified within this study to be associated with deep and shallow sites follows the traditional pattern anticipated from the literature. However, the calculated false discovery rates suggest that these results may have occurred by chance and not due to a true difference.

A General Life History Theory For Effects Of Caloric Restriction On Health Maintenance, Chen Hou, Kendra Bolt, Aviv Bergman May 2011

A General Life History Theory For Effects Of Caloric Restriction On Health Maintenance, Chen Hou, Kendra Bolt, Aviv Bergman

Biological Sciences Faculty Research & Creative Works

Background: Caloric restriction (CR) has been shown to keep organisms in a relatively youthful and healthy state compared to ad libitum fed counterparts, as well as to extend the lifespan of a diverse set of organisms. Several attempts have been made to understand the underlying mechanisms from the viewpoint of energy tradeoffs in organisms' life histories. However, most models are based on assumptions which are difficult to justify, or are endowed with free-adjusting parameters whose biological relevancy is unclear.

Results: In this paper, we derive a general quantitative, predictive model based on physiological data for endotherms. We test the hypothesis …

Unprecedented Directing Group Ability Of Cyclophanes In Arene Fluorinations With Diaryliodonium Salts, Joseph W. Graskemper, Bijia Wang, Linlin Qin, Kiel D. Neumann, Stephen G. Dimagno May 2011

Unprecedented Directing Group Ability Of Cyclophanes In Arene Fluorinations With Diaryliodonium Salts, Joseph W. Graskemper, Bijia Wang, Linlin Qin, Kiel D. Neumann, Stephen G. Dimagno

Stephen DiMagno Papers

For the first time it is shown that exceptionally electron-rich arene rings can be fluorinated exclusively during the reductive elimination reactions of diaryliodonium fluorides. The 5-methoxy[2.2]paracyclophan-4-yl directing group simultaneously reduces unproductive aryne chemistry and eliminates ligand exchange reactions by a combination of steric and electronic effects. Use of the cyclophane directing group permits an unprecedented degree of control in fluorination reactions of diaryliodonium salts.

UCHC Articles - Research

Purpose Prominin is a family of pentaspan transmembrane glycoproteins. They are expressed in various types of cells, including many stem/progenitor cells. Prominin-1 plays an important role in generating and maintaining the structure of the photoreceptors. In this study, we identified three prominin homologs in Xenopus laevis, a model animal widely used in vision research, and characterized their messenger RNA (mRNA) expression in selected tissues of this frog. Methods Reverse-transcription PCR (RT–PCR) and rapid amplification of cDNA ends (RACE) were used to isolate cDNAs of prominin homologs. Semiquantitative RT–PCR was used to measure the relative expression levels of mRNAs of …

Sensitivity To Foliar Anthocyanin Content Of Vegetation Indices Using Green Reflectance, Andrés Viña, Anatoly A. Gitelson May 2011

Sensitivity To Foliar Anthocyanin Content Of Vegetation Indices Using Green Reflectance, Andrés Viña, Anatoly A. Gitelson

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Anthocyanins are nonphotosynthetic water-soluble pigments associated with the resistance of plants to environmental stresses such as drought, low soil nutrients, high radiation, herbivores, and pathogens. Information on the absolute and relative amounts of anthocyanins allows evaluating the physiological conditions of plants and their responses to stress and has the potential for evaluating plant species diversity across broad geographic regions. As anthocyanins absorb radiation in the green region of the electromagnetic spectrum (with a peak of absorption at around 540–560 nm), broadband vegetation indices that use this spectral region in their formulation will exhibit sensitivity to their presence. In this letter, …

Feeding The Dry Cow, Fernando Diaz Royon, Alvaro Garcia, Kenneth Kalscheur May 2011

Feeding The Dry Cow, Fernando Diaz Royon, Alvaro Garcia, Kenneth Kalscheur

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

Under ideal conditions, dairy cows produce milk during 305 days of the year and are dry the remaining 60 (table 1). In reality, feeding for high production should begin during the dry period or towards the end of the previous lactation. With dry periods shorter than 40 days, there’s not enough time to regenerate the mammary tissue; this may result in production losses of 20–40% during the next lactation. Dry periods longer than 70 days do not promote an increase in production and may result in calving difficulties that are costly to the producer.
