A Review Of Literature For Osteology: Cell Biology, Tissue Biology, And The Application Of Synthetic Compounds For The Facilitation Of Bone Tissue Repair, Ryan T. Jones
Honors Theses
Bone is a dynamic matter that provides support, structure, mineral reserves, and stem cell reserves for the body. Important functions range from structural support for the body to roles in maintaining homeostasis. Structure and support for the body is the most obvious role, with the skeletal system as a whole providing a normal force for other tissues and organs to resist gravity. Protection is also inferred for tissues and organs from impacting forces, especially with axial bones covering vital organs in the thoracic cavity. Another function of bone includes the ability to store and release minerals when needed to maintain …
Mechanistic Study Of The Small Molecule Inhibitor Dx-52-1, Junru Cui
Mechanistic Study Of The Small Molecule Inhibitor Dx-52-1, Junru Cui
Master's Theses
Cell migration is a basic biological process that is fundamental to several normal and disease processes such as embryonic development, tissue repair, immune function, angiogenesis and cancer cell invasion and metastasis. Small organic molecules inhibiting cell migration can be used as both research probes and therapeutic agents. DX-52-1, a semisynthetic derivative of the natural product quinocarmycin (also known as quinocarcin), inhibits the migration of Madin-Darby canine kidney epithelial cells with nanomolar concentration. We have identified galectin-3, a multifunctional protein whose best-known function is its sugar binding ability, as a secondary target of DX-52-1 with functions in cell motility. In addition, …

Background
Endocrine disrupting chemicals (e.g., estrogens, androgens and their mimics) are known to affect reproduction in fish. 17α-ethynylestradiol is a synthetic estrogen used in birth control pills. 17β-trenbolone is a relatively stable metabolite of trenbolone acetate, a synthetic androgen used as a growth promoter in livestock. Both 17α-ethynylestradiol and 17β-trenbolone have been found in the aquatic environment and affect fish reproduction. In this study, we developed a physiologically-based computational model for female fathead minnows (FHM, Pimephales promelas), a small fish species used in ecotoxicology, to simulate how estrogens (i.e., 17α-ethynylestradiol) or androgens (i.e., 17β-trenbolone) affect reproductive endpoints such as …

Tropical tree height-diameter (H:D) relationships may vary by forest type and region making large-scale estimates of above-ground biomass subject to bias if they ignore these differences in stem allometry. We have therefore developed a new global tropical forest database consisting of 39 955 concurrent H and D measurements encompassing 283 sites in 22 tropical countries. Utilising this database, our objectives were:
1. to determine if H:D relationships differ by geographic region and forest type (wet to dry forests, including zones of tension where forest and savanna overlap).
2. to ascertain if the H:D relationship is modulated by climate and/or forest …

Vapor Transport And Aerosol Dynamics In The Respiratory Airways, Geng Tian
Vapor Transport And Aerosol Dynamics In The Respiratory Airways, Geng Tian
Theses and Dissertations
Predicting vapor transport and aerosol dynamics in the respiratory airways is important for analyzing both environmental exposure and respiratory drug delivery. A large number of analytical models, computational studies, and experiments on vapor and aerosol transport in the respiratory tract have been conducted previously. However, a number of critical questions remain unanswered. In this study, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is primarily employed with frequent comparisons to existing and new experimental data sets to address previously unanswered issues related to the transport of vapors and aerosol in the respiratory tract. The three objectives of this study are further described below. Objective …
A Parallel Genetic Algorithm For Placement And Routing On Cloud Computing Platforms, Jacob A. Berlier
A Parallel Genetic Algorithm For Placement And Routing On Cloud Computing Platforms, Jacob A. Berlier
Theses and Dissertations
The design and implementation of today's most advanced VLSI circuits and multi-layer printed circuit boards would not be possible without automated design tools that assist with the placement of components and the routing of connections between these components. In this work, we investigate how placement and routing can be implemented and accelerated using cloud computing resources. A parallel genetic algorithm approach is used to optimize component placement and the routing order supplied to a Lee's algorithm maze router. A study of mutation rate, dominance rate, and population size is presented to suggest favorable parameter values for arbitrary-sized printed circuit board …

Beyond The Beach: Population Trends And Foraging Site Selection Of A Florida Loggerhead Nesting Assemblage, Katrina Phillips
Beyond The Beach: Population Trends And Foraging Site Selection Of A Florida Loggerhead Nesting Assemblage, Katrina Phillips
Open Access Theses
A twenty year mark-recapture dataset from the loggerhead nesting beach on Keewaydin Island, off the southwest coast of Florida, was analyzed using a two-state open robust design model in Program MARK to provide insight into recent nesting declines in the state. A total of 2,292 encounters representing 841 individual tag IDs were used for this analysis. Survival was estimated at 0.73 (95% CI 0.69-0.76), and there was no evidence from remigration rate or clutch frequency to suggest the composition of the nesting assemblage had changed over time. The mark-recapture analysis was supplemented with a satellite tracking component to identify the …
Before The Champions: Frederick Delius' Florida Suite For Orchestra, Mary Emily Greene
Before The Champions: Frederick Delius' Florida Suite For Orchestra, Mary Emily Greene
Open Access Theses
Frederick Delius’ music never appealed to the masses, but rather found ardent support in a devoted few. This trend of select championship was predicted, if not encouraged, by the composer himself: “A few there are who love and understand. They are the ones that count. The rest are not worth bothering about.” [1] Throughout Delius’ labored career, he was fortunate to meet the very champions of his work that would guide him through the most critical points in his life. Few composers have elicited such devotion and sacrifice that Delius garnered with relatively little solicitation. The aim of this paper …

Insight From The Depths Of The Straits Of Florida: Assessing The Utility Of Atlantic Deep-Water Coral Geochemical Proxy Techniques, Angela D. Rosenberg
Open Access Theses
This thesis addresses the utility of deep-water coral geochemistry and its potential to reconstruct oceanographic conditions in the Straits of Florida. Through stable isotope and elemental analyses of the carbonate skeletons and use of available geochemical proxy calibration equations, present and past environmental parameters were determined. Over the last several years, scientific expeditions to the bottom of the Straits of Florida have revealed hundreds of deep-water coral mounds and led to the collection of extensive oceanographic data, sediment samples, and deep-water coral specimens. In 2005-2006, an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) was used to map the coral mound fields at five …
Development And Policy Applications Of The 2010 Benthic Habitat Map For Dry Tortugas National Park., Robert J. Waara
Development And Policy Applications Of The 2010 Benthic Habitat Map For Dry Tortugas National Park., Robert J. Waara
Open Access Theses
In 2008 an initial benthic habitat map was completed by the contractor Avineon, Inc. The National Park Service South Florida / Caribbean Network (SFCN) conducted an accuracy assessment of the map and found the overall habitat identification to be acceptable. However, upon further inspection, the soft-bottom habitat classifications displayed a relatively high level of accuracy, while the hard-bottom habitats were below an acceptable level. With the acquisition of new higher resolution side scan sonar data and 2054 field data points from multiple sources, the 2008 map was revised and improved by utilizing these new data sets to produce the 2010 …

Putting Structure Into Fluidized Bed – From Concept To Industrial Applications, Fei Wei, Qiang Zhang, Guohua Luo, Weizhong Qian, Yao Wang
10th International Conference on Circulating Fluidized Beds and Fluidization Technology - CFB-10
Structures of particles, particle agglomerates, distributors, and internals have significantly influence on hydrodynamics and transfer behaviors of the dense gas-solid fluidized bed. For nanomaterial production, the particle surface and their agglomerated structures directly influence the fluidization behaviors; while for coal to chemical process, the distributors, internals play an important role in regime transient, and hydrodynamics. Carbon nanotubes mass production, coal to chemicals process. and fuel production were employed as examples to describe the concept of putting structures into fluidized bed, and then to put these structures into industrial applications.

Large-Scale Production, Biochemical And Structural Characterization Of Lactate Dehydrogenase For The Discovery Of Novel Small Molecule Inhibitors, Erol Jahja
Honors Thesis and Capstone Projects
Lactate Dehydrogenase (LDH) catalyzes the interconversion of pyruvate and lactate in the final step of anaerobic glycolysis. Many invasive tumors depend on an increased rate of glycolysis in order to maximize their growth potential under hypoxic environments, a phenomenon known as the "Warburg Effect." By finding a way to inhibit LDH, contributions would be made towards the management of cancerous cells by inhibition of their energy production.
Human LDH isoenzyme A was subcloned into an in-house vector (pET28a with a PreScission cleavage site) and overexpressed in E. coli Tuner(DE3) cells as a fusion protein with maltose binding protein (MBP) to …
