The Increasing Rate Of Undergraduate Male Attrition: What The Men Tell Us. A Qualitative Case Study., Monika Neelam Kushwaha

Dissertations, 2014-2019

The current study explores the factors that may contribute to undergraduate male attrition and ways of improving retention at James Madison University (JMU) using qualitative case study methodology. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with five men who were currently enrolled at JMU, six men who had previously been enrolled at JMU but who had left before completing a degree, and two university administrators who work closely with students at risk of dropping out. Interviews were recorded and transcribed. They were analyzed using QSR’s N-Vivo 9, a qualitative data management software package. Themes and sub-themes emerged around two major categories: factors that …

Variation In The Branching Pattern Of The Four Major Caudal Vessels Emerging From The External Carotid Artery, Sara B. Heltzel May 2011

Variation In The Branching Pattern Of The Four Major Caudal Vessels Emerging From The External Carotid Artery, Sara B. Heltzel

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

The branching pattern of vessels emerging from the external carotid artery (ECA) displays considerable variation. Knowledge of this variation is of particular interest to clinicians. There are few reports in the literature assessing these differences with regard to sex and sidedness (i.e., branching patterns of the right vs. left neck). The objective of this study was to assess the origin of the four primary caudal branches of the external carotid artery: the superior thyroid (STA), lingual (LA), facial (FA), and occipital (OA) arteries, in addition to the level of common carotid artery bifurcation (CB), with regard to sex, and side. …

A Poultry All-Hazard Threat, Vulnerability, And Capability Assessment With Rockingham County Fire Rescue., Daniel Robert Dales May 2011

A Poultry All-Hazard Threat, Vulnerability, And Capability Assessment With Rockingham County Fire Rescue., Daniel Robert Dales

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

Agriculture is argued to be one of our most critical infrastructures and is vital to human health and survivability. Agriculture is economically important in Virginia as it provides over 350,000 jobs and generates $55 billion annually (Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services). This high criticality lends to significant areas of vulnerability in each sector of agriculture. Rockingham County is of particular importance as the top agriculturally producing county in the state and is ranked 5th in the nation for poultry sales (2007 Census of Agriculture). The desire to uphold this high production calls for a need to better understand …

A Study Of Solar Power Implementation Business Model Options For Grand Junction, Colorado, Virginia Phillips May 2011

A Study Of Solar Power Implementation Business Model Options For Grand Junction, Colorado, Virginia Phillips

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

This dissertation analyzed three solar power implementation business models that would transfer the burden of capital, operational, and maintenance costs from an individual to an entity with available funding. Solar power has long been touted as an emissions free and environmentally friendly alternative to more conventional forms of energy, such as coal. Most of Colorado’s electricity is generated from coal-fired power plants. To combat climate change and reduce health risks, Colorado has implemented a Renewable Portfolio Standard (RPS) requiring that 30% of electricity produced in 2020 come from a renewable resource, such as solar. Of this, three percent must derive …

‘The Eco-Gozo Vision’: A Study Set Against Criteria Of Good Governance And Sustainability, Amity Gauci

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

To make up for social fragmentation of modern life and its alienation from nature, lately sustainable communities and eco islands have arisen around the world as a worldwide movement. Given this context, this study will address the island of Gozo. Gozo is the subject of an Eco Island Vision; a Vision with the aim to transform Gozo into an eco island by 2020. Thus the intent of this study is to present an evaluation of the Vision based on principles of good governance and sustainability. The research methodology has been based on a triangulation approach: a desk study to establish …

A System Dynamics Approach Towards Assessing Posidonia Oceanica Habitat, Justine Schembri May 2011

A System Dynamics Approach Towards Assessing Posidonia Oceanica Habitat, Justine Schembri

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

Posidonia oceanica habitat is one of the most important coastal shallow water habitats in the Mediterranean region and provides highly valuable and varied ecological services such as supporting high species diversity, protecting against coastal erosion, and sequestering carbon. Posidonia oceanica habitat is declining as a result of a multitude of converging pressures, both natural and anthropogenic, in the coastal zone. The slow rate at which Posidonia oceanica meadows undergo recovery, in contrast to the rapid dynamics that bring about their decline, is consequently of great concern. The need to proactively manage this valuable resource must be met in order that …

Phylogenetics And Diversification Of Escallonia (Escalloniaceae), Felipe Zapata May 2011

Phylogenetics And Diversification Of Escallonia (Escalloniaceae), Felipe Zapata

Dissertations

Despite a large accumulation of evidence on the high richness of plant species in the mountains of South America, little is known about the historical underpinnings of this diversity. To contribute to our understanding of the origin and diversification of plant species in these mountains, I analyzed geographic patterns of variation in molecular and phenotypic characters for the genus Escallonia L.f. (Escalloniaceae), a group of shrubs widespread in montane habitats in South America. Molecular phylogenetic analyses using chloroplast and nuclear loci revealed i) that Escallonia is monophyletic, ii) a remarkable level of geographical phylogenetic structure, and iii) a widespread absence …

Characterization Of Fluidization And Mixing Of Binary Mixtures Containing Biomass At Low Velocities Through Analyzing Local Pressure Fluctuations, Farzam Fotovat, Jaber Shabanian, Jamal Chaouki, Jeffrey Bergthorson

10th International Conference on Circulating Fluidized Beds and Fluidization Technology - CFB-10

To judge qualitatively the effect of biomass properties on its fluidizability and mixing tendency with sand particles at low fluidization velocities, local pressure gradients in the top and bottom of the bed were compared for all investigated systems. It was found that changing the mass fraction and the size of biomass impacted the onset of bubbling and the size of bubbles across the bed, which, in turn, affected the mixing/segregation of the bed content.

Upper Pleistocene Human Dispersals Out Of Africa: A Review Of The Current State Of The Debate, Amanuel Beyin May 2011

Upper Pleistocene Human Dispersals Out Of Africa: A Review Of The Current State Of The Debate, Amanuel Beyin

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

Although there is a general consensus on African origin of early modern humans, there is disagreement about how and when they dispersed to Eurasia. This paper reviews genetic and Middle Stone Age/Middle Paleolithic archaeological literature from northeast Africa, Arabia, and the Levant to assess the timing and geographic backgrounds of Upper Pleistocene human colonization of Eurasia. At the center of the discussion lies the question of whether eastern Africa alone was the source of Upper Pleistocene human dispersals into Eurasia or were there other loci of human expansions outside of Africa? The reviewed literature hints at two modes of early …

Communication: Bubbles, Crystals, And Laser-Induced Nucleation, Brandon C. Knott, Jerry L. Larue, Alec M. Wodtke, Michael F. Doherty, Baron Peters

Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research

Short intense laser pulses of visible and infrared light can dramatically accelerate crystal nucleation from transparent solutions; previous studies invoke mechanisms that are only applicable for nucleation of ordered phases or high dielectric phases. However, we show that similar laser pulses induce CO2bubblenucleation in carbonated water. Additionally, in water that is cosupersaturated with argon and glycine, argon bubbles escaping from the water can induce crystal nucleation without a laser. Our findings suggest a possible link between laser-induced nucleation of bubbles and crystals.

Natural enemies of the imported fire ants, Solenopsis invicta Buren S. richteri Forel (Hymenoptera: Formicidae), and their hybrid, include a suite of more than 20 fire ant decapitating phorid flies from South America in the genus Pseudacteon. Over the past 12 years, many researchers and associates have cooperated in introducing several species as classical or self-sustaining biological control agents in the United States. As a result, two species of flies, Pseudacteon tricuspis Borgmeier and P. curvatus Borgmeier (Diptera: Phoridae), are well established across large areas of the southeastern United States. Whereas many researchers have published local and state information about …
