Maternal Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, Parenting, Family Functioning, And Child Outcome, Desiree Alana Sutherland Jun 2011

Maternal Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, Parenting, Family Functioning, And Child Outcome, Desiree Alana Sutherland

Dissertations

Although a good deal of research has been conducted examining the effects of parental psychopathology of various types (i.e. maternal and paternal depression and schizophrenia, paternal PTSD), very few studies have investigated the influence of maternal PTSD on mothers’ parenting and their children’s behavioral and psychological functioning. This paucity of research is in spite of the fact that women exhibit higher lifetime PTSD prevalence rates than men. The current study examined the influence of maternal PTSD and trauma on mothers’ parenting, family functioning, and children’s psychological well-being in a sample of 125 mothers and 34 mother-child dyads. Mothers provided self-report …

Transcriptome Characterization And Polymorphism Detection In Subspecies Of Big Sagebrush (Artemisia Tridentata), Prabin Bajgain

Theses and Dissertations

Big sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata) is one of the ecologically most important shrub species in western North America. The species serves as a major source of food and habitat for the near-threatened sage grouse and various other fauna. Habitat loss due to a combination of disturbances followed by establishment of invasive plant species is considered as a serious threat to sustainability of the big sagebrush ecosystem. Because of its importance, restoration of this species is very crucial to those dependent on big sagebrush community. However, restoration of big sagebrush carried out by using diverse seed source can lead to …

The researcher believes that the morphological data would be useful to plant systematics and conservation biologists and thus making it accessible to them would be important.

Drought Analysis Based On Copulas, Lu Chen, Vijay P. Singh, Shenglian Guo Jun 2011

Drought Analysis Based On Copulas, Lu Chen, Vijay P. Singh, Shenglian Guo

2011 Symposium on Data-Driven Approaches to Droughts

Droughts produce a complex set of negative economic, environmental, and social impacts across a country or region. Using monthly standardized Precipitation Index (SPI) values, drought characteristics, namely, drought duration, severity, interval time and minimum SPI values, were determined. Two exponential distributions were used to model drought duration and interval time, respectively; gamma distribution was used to model for drought severity; and generalized Pareto distribution to model minimum SPI value. Several copulas in the Archimedean and meta-elliptical families were applied to construct four-dimensional joint distributions. The upstream Han River basin was selected as an example to illustrate the copulas. Results indicates …

Analysis Of Drought Severity And Duration Based On Runoff Derived From The Noah Land Surface Model, C Prakesh Khedun, Hemant Chowdhary, J. Richard Giardino, Ashok K. Mishra, Vijay P. Singh

2011 Symposium on Data-Driven Approaches to Droughts

Water management requires, among other information, the proper identification of drought events and their characteristics: duration and severity. In this paper we compute standardized runoff index (SRI), which is an index based on runoff but computed following the same methodology as standardized precipitation index, over the Rio Grande basin. The runoff values were generated from the Noah land surface model. The drought duration and severity for each year were extracted and copula was used to produce the joint probabilities of drought severity and duration. Four copulas were tested and the Gumbel-Hougaard (GH) copula was deemed most appropriate for this dataset. …

Attention All Internet Users: How Proposed Amendments To The Communications Decency Act Could Save Your Reputation, Niki Blumentritt

Legislation and Policy Brief

Imagine a beautiful fall day on a Southern college campus. The leaves are changing, and the sound of the band practicing for this weekend’s big game echoes throughout campus.  Jane, a college freshman, is walking through campus on the way back to her dorm from her Biology 101 class.  Usually, Jane’s walk is uneventful, aside from the occasional run-in with a friend or sorority sister; however, today is much different.  Jane notices that many people are staring, pointing, and snickering at her.  Is there something on her face?  She quickly pulls out her compact and realizes that all makeup is …

Review Of Gasoline, Diesel, And Ethanol Biofuels From Grasses And Plants, By Ram B. Gupta And Ayhan Demirbas., Adam J. Liska

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

A new book on the production of biofuels by Gupta and Demirbas provides technical insight into the conversion processes that could provide a range of domestic fuels from plant materials to substitute for foreign oil. It focuses primarily on conversion processes for production of cellulosic ethanol, Fischer-Tropsch diesel, pyrolysis bio-oil, and hydrothermal biocrude from biomass resources, as well as "first-generation" grain ethanol and biodiesel from vegetable oil. In addition to a detailed summary of these chemical processes, the book provides a briefer treatment of related matters such as biofuel policy, economics, and environmental issues.

Theories Of The Firm And Judicial Uncertainty, Andrew S. Gold Jun 2011

Theories Of The Firm And Judicial Uncertainty, Andrew S. Gold

Seattle University Law Review

There is no necessary connection between academics’ theories of the firm and judicial theories of the firm. Economists and legal scholars may adopt one theory of the firm, and courts may adopt another. We might even predict this result. Judges are not economists, and as increasingly sophisticated theories of the firm emerge in the academic literature, judges are not well-positioned to keep pace with the evolving accounts. Indeed, judges may reasonably choose to adopt no theory at all. Given these premises, this Essay explores the relationship between academically developed theories of the firm and corporate legal doctrine. Legal scholars who …

Interoceptive Fear And Pain Anxiety In Non-Cardiac Chest Pain: Is Fear Associated With Reduced Physical Activity?, Jennifer Marie Craft Jun 2011

Interoceptive Fear And Pain Anxiety In Non-Cardiac Chest Pain: Is Fear Associated With Reduced Physical Activity?, Jennifer Marie Craft

Dissertations

Non-cardiac chest pain (NCCP) describes angina-like pain suffered by patients who lack a cardiac diagnosis (Fleet & Beitman, 1997). Despite a benign diagnosis, some NCCP patients continue to experience persistent pain, cardiac worry, impaired quality of life (Eifert, Hodson, Tracey, Seville, & Gunawardane, 1996), elevated rates of psychiatric disorders (Bass & Wade, 1984; White, et al., 2008), and negative health consequences (Eslick & Talley, 2008). Consistent with theory, research indicates that NCCP patients differentially fear cardiac sensations (Aikens, Zvolensky, & Eifert, 2001; White, Craft, & Gervino, 2010). It may be that NCCP patients avoid physical activity, which elicits feared cardiorespiratory …

Surface Modification Of Droplet Polymeric Microfluidic Devices For The Stable And Continuous Generation Of Aqueous Droplets, Balamurugan Subramanian, Namwon Kim, Wonbae Lee, David A. Spivak, Dimitris E. Nikitopoulos, Robin L. Mccarley, Steven A. Soper

Faculty Publications

Droplet microfluidics performed in poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) microfluidic devices resulted in significant wall wetting by water droplets formed in a liquid-liquid segmented flow when using a hydrophobic carrier fluid such as perfluorotripropylamine (FC-3283). This wall wetting led to water droplets with nonuniform sizes that were often trapped on the wall surfaces, leading to unstable and poorly controlled liquid-liquid segmented flow. To circumvent this problem, we developed a two-step procedure to hydrophobically modify the surfaces of PMMA and other thermoplastic materials commonly used to make microfluidic devices. The surface-modification route involved the introduction of hydroxyl groups by oxygen plasma treatment of …

Members Only: The Need For Reform In U.S. Intercountry Adoption Policy, Colin Joseph Troy Jun 2011

Members Only: The Need For Reform In U.S. Intercountry Adoption Policy, Colin Joseph Troy

Seattle University Law Review

In the last five years, Americans have adopted nearly seventy thousand children from foreign countries. The trend of intercountry adoption, “the process by which a married couple or single individual of one country adopts a child from another country,” is representative of the new globalized world, where families are formed and dissolved beyond the bounds of national borders. Although intercountry adoption has enabled many adoptive parents to form loving families and provide caring living environments for countless children, intercountry adoption is not without its share of problems. Corruption and abuse, such as child trafficking, have in many cases marred the …

Using Leadership To Address The Problem Of Obesity In The Workplace, Amber Colston

Florida Public Health Review

Obesity is a growing epidemic that affects more and more Americans every year. With the majority ofAmerican adults in the workforce, obesity plays a large part in healthcare costs, absenteeism, and “presenteeism.” Because ofthe large amount oftime adults spend in the workplace, using this setting as an intervention point for healthy lifestyle change could greatly reduce the prevalence of obesity. This paper will review factors that have contributed to the problem of obesity in the workplace, namely the factors at each ofthe five levels ofthe Social Ecology ofHealth Model. Then using leadership frameworks, such as that of Transformational Leadership, this …

A Leadership Solution To Workplace Stress, Monica L. Rousseau

Florida Public Health Review

Sources of stress can be found nearly everywhere: in school, at home, in traffic, and maybe most importantly –in the workplace. Chronic workplace stress, also known as “burnout”, has been linked with both psychological and physiological illnesses. As most Americans spend about halfoftheir waking hours at work, the workplace is an excellent location to evaluate specific risk factors and implement stress reducing programs. Although a number ofsuch programs are currently in practice, the majority ofthem only offer techniques and coping mechanisms to individuals already exhibiting some, or several, ofthe many severe symptoms ofchronic stress. The purpose ofthis paper is to …

Analysis Of Drought Severity And Duration Based On Runoff Derived From The Noah Land Surface Model, C Prakesh Khedun, Hemant Choudary, Ashok K. Mishra, J Richard Giardino, Vijay P. Singh

2011 Symposium on Data-Driven Approaches to Droughts

Droughts have catastrophic impacts across a wide range of sectors. Proper assessment of drought is central to water management; early identification can help mitigate the negative impacts of a drought. A number of metrics have been developed towards this end and are currently in use for characterizing droughts. One major challenge in computing these indices, however, is the integrity of the original datasets. Whereas precipitation is not significantly affected by anthropogenic changes, if we discount climate change, other local variables, such as soil moisture and streamflow, are greatly influenced by land use land cover changes. Streamflow, which is the most …

Error Sentinel: A Rule-Based Spreadsheet Program For Intelligent Data Entry, Error Correction, And Curation, Kyle Dewey Jun 2011

Error Sentinel: A Rule-Based Spreadsheet Program For Intelligent Data Entry, Error Correction, And Curation, Kyle Dewey

Theses

Within the biological sciences, spreadsheets are commonly used as a data entry and storage medium. While this practice is simple and generally well understood, the unrestrained flexibility of the spreadsheet medium allows errors to accumulate and potentially propagate. Such errors impede accurate analysis, hindering research. The underlying problem is that the error correction facilities of typical spreadsheet programs are lackluster at best, if they exist at all. For this reason, Error Sentinel was developed. Error Sentinel is a spreadsheet program with programmable error correction facilities. These facilities allow users to define exactly what clean data is, along with corrections for …

Prostate Cancer Screening: Leadership Implications, Dorothy D. Zeviar

Florida Public Health Review

TheepidemiologyofprostatecancerintheAfricanAmericanpopulationiswell-knowntohealthcarepractitioners; prostate cancer disproportionately impacts African American men 2:1 compared to Caucasian men. The Prostate Cancer Foundation hypothesizes that the increased mortality risk may be due to delayed diagnosis, poor work-up, and less complete treatment, indicating inequitable use of the health care system. The National Cancer Institute suggests that availability of health insurance and physician contact may increase screening and thus, reduce cancer mortality. Because health behaviors and health outcomes are impacted at five different levels according to the Social Ecology Model ofhealth – intrapersonal, interpersonal, organizational, community and social/policy levels – this report proposes that a Collaborative Leadership model …

Drought Regionalization Of Brazos River Basin Using An Entropy Approach, Deepthi Rajsekhar, Ashok Mishra, Vijay P. Singh

2011 Symposium on Data-Driven Approaches to Droughts

Assessment and understanding of past climate is an important step for drought mitigation and water resources planning. In this study, stream flows imulation obtained from the variable infiltration capacity(VIC) model was used for drought characterization, and subsequently regionalization was done based on the annual severity level, for the Brazos basin in Texas over a time span of 1949-2000. It is important to study drought characteristics with in a regional context. Hence, identification of homogenous drought regions is a prerequisite, so that the drought characteristics can be studied with in each of these regions. In this study, the concept of entropy …

A Look At 20th Century Droughts, Vijay P. Singh, Ashok K. Mishra

2011 Symposium on Data-Driven Approaches to Droughts

Droughts exercise a profound effect on the social and economic fabric of nations. Many nations of the world experienced droughts encompassing the full spectrum of severity, areal extent and duration. The result has been that the economic development was hampered and many countries have not yet recouped fully from the ravages of droughts. The first decade of the 21st century has also witnessed varying degrees of droughts across the globe. Therefore, we ask the following questions: (a) Do droughts affect every part of the world? (b) Are there similarities in major droughts around the world? (c) Are climate change and …
