Rethinking The Nature Of The Firm: The Corporation As A Governance Object, Peer Zumbansen
Rethinking The Nature Of The Firm: The Corporation As A Governance Object, Peer Zumbansen
Seattle University Law Review
This Article attempts to bridge two discourses—corporate governance and contract governance. Regarding the latter, a group of scholars has recently set out to develop a more comprehensive research agenda to explore the governance dimensions of contractual relations, highlighting the potential of contract theory to develop a more encompassing theory of social and economic transactions. While a renewed interest in the contribution of economic theory for a concept of contract governance drives one dimension of this research, another part of this undertaking has been to move contract theory closer to theories of social organization. Here, these scholars emphasize the “social” or …

The Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) Hole 1301A on the eastern flank of Juan de Fuca Ridge was used in the first long-term deployment of microbial enrichment flow cells using osmotically driven pumps in a subseafloor borehole. Three novel osmotically driven colonization systems with unidirectional flow were deployed in the borehole and incubated for 4 years to determine the microbial colonization preferences for 12 minerals and glasses present in igneous rocks. Following recovery of the colonization systems, we measured cell density on the minerals and glasses by fluorescent staining and direct counting and found some significant differences between mineral samples. …
Super Learner Based Conditional Density Estimation With Application To Marginal Structural Models, Ivan Diaz Munoz, Mark J. Van Der Laan
Super Learner Based Conditional Density Estimation With Application To Marginal Structural Models, Ivan Diaz Munoz, Mark J. Van Der Laan
U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series
In this paper we present a histogram-like estimator of a conditional density that uses super learner crossvalidation to estimate the histogram probabilities, as well as the optimal number and position of the bins. This estimator is an alternative to kernel density estimators when the dimension of the problem is large. We demonstrate its applicability to estimation of Marginal Structural Model (MSM) parameters in which an initial estimator of the treatment %mechanism is needed. MSM estimation based on the proposed density estimator results in less biased estimates, when compared to estimates based on a misspecified parametric model.

We have identified an environmental bacterium in the Candidate Division TM7 with ≥98.5% 16S rDNA gene homology to a group of TM7 bacteria associated with the human oral cavity and skin. The environmental TM7 bacterium (referred to as TM7a-like) was readily detectable in wastewater with molecular techniques over two years of sampling. We present the first images of TM7a-like cells through FISH technique and the first images of any TM7 as viable cells through the STARFISH technique. In situ quantification showed TM7 concentration in wastewater up to five times greater than in human oral sites. We speculate that upon further …

A Multi-Frequency Inverse Source Problem For The Helmholtz Equation, Sebastian Ignacio Acosta
A Multi-Frequency Inverse Source Problem For The Helmholtz Equation, Sebastian Ignacio Acosta
Theses and Dissertations
The inverse source problem for the Helmholtz equation is studied. An unknown source is to be identified from the knowledge of its radiated wave. The focus is placed on the effect that multi-frequency data has on establishing uniqueness. In particular, we prove that data obtained from finitely many frequencies is not sufficient. On the other hand, if the frequency varies within an open interval of the positive real line, then the source is determined uniquely. An algorithm is based on an incomplete Fourier transform of the measured data and we establish an error estimate under certain regularity assumptions on the …

The Effect Of Calving Season And Wintering System On Cow And Calf Performance And Economics From Conception Through Finishing And The Effect Of Supplementing Dried Distillers Grains To Calves In Forage Based Systems, William Griffin
Department of Animal Science: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Three experiments were conducted to determine the effect of calving season and cow wintering systems on cow and calf performance and economics from conception to slaughter, the effect of supplementing steers dried distillers grains while grazing cool season dominated meadow, and a meta-analysis was conducted to determine the effect supplementing dried distillers grains to cattle in forage based growing systems. In the first experiment, cows were bred to calve in spring, summer or fall. Calves from each system were managed as calf-feds or yearlings and followed through finishing. Altering calving season impacted cow BW and BCS but did not affect …

Nanostructured magnetic materials have a variety of promising applications spreading from nano-scale electronic devices, sensors and high-density data storage media to controlled drug delivery and cancer diagnostics/treatment systems. Magnetic nanoparticles offer the most natural and elegant way for fabrication of such (multi-) functional materials. In this review, we briefly summarize the recent progress in the synthesis of magnetic nanoparticles (which now can be done with precise control over the size and surface chemistry), and nanoscale interactions leading to their self-assembly into 1D, 2D or 3D aggregates. Various approaches to self-organization, directed-, or template-assisted assembly of these nanostructures are discussed with …

Real-Time Visualizations Of Ocean Data Collected By The Norus Glider In Svalbad, Norway, Daniel Medina, Mark A. Moline, Christopher M. Clark, Zoë J. Wood
Computer Science and Software Engineering
Modern robotics and sensors have expanded the ability to collect science data in underwater settings. Oftentimes, the collected data are deposited into files and databases where they sit in their separate and unique formats. Without easy to use visualization tools, it is difficult to understand and interpret the information within these data sets. NORUS, the North America-Norway educational program, has a scientific focus on how climate-induced changes impact the living resources and ecosystems in the Arctic. In order to obtain the necessary science data, the NORUS program utilizes the Slocum Glider, a form of underwater robot. We present a compelling, …

Up-Regulated Dicer Expression In Patients With Cutaneous Melanoma, Soheil S. Dadras, Elizabeth Fleming, Helen Swede
UCHC Articles - Research
Background
MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small non-coding RNAs (18–24 nucleotides) that have recently been shown to regulate gene expression during cancer progression. Dicer, a central enzyme in the multi-component miRNA biogenesis pathway, is involved in cutting precursor miRNAs to functionally mature forms. Emerging evidence shows that Dicer expression is deregulated in some human malignancies and it correlates with tumor progression, yet this role has not yet been investigated in skin cancers.
Methods and Findings
Using an anti-human monoclonal antibody against Dicer and immunohistochemistry, we compared the expression of Dicer protein among 404 clinically annotated controls and skin tumors consisting of melanocytic …

Perflurorochemical (Pfc) Exposure In Children: Associations With Impaired Response Inhibition, Brooks B. Gump, Qian Wu, Amy K. Dumas, Kurunthachalam Kannan
Falk College Research Center
Background: Perfluorinated chemicals (PFCs) have been used widely in consumer products since the 1950s and are currently found at detectable levels in the blood of humans and animals across the globe. In stark contrast to this widespread exposure to PFCs, there is relatively little research on potential adverse health effects of exposure to these chemicals. Objectives: We performed this cross-sectional study to determine if specific blood PFC levels are associated with impaired response inhibition in children. Methods: Blood levels of 11 PFCs were measured in children (N = 83) and 6 PFCs: perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), perfluorohexane sulfate (PFHxS), perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), …

Libraries
The revolution of Information Communication and Technology has brought a great change in the way libraries are providing services. Libraries have continued to embrace these technologies vis‐à‐vis Internet thus seeing the introduction of electronic resources to the library collection and services. The availability of good internet connectivity is essential in the provision of electronic resources. Kenya has had internet since 1996 (Mutula, 2001) and over the years there has been great effort to improve connectivity such as the recent introduction of fibre optic cable in 2009. The need for good internet connectivity has also been supported by initiatives such as …

Most organisms experience environments that vary continuously over time, yet researchers generally study phenotypic responses to abrupt and sustained changes in environmental conditions. Gradual environmental changes, whether predictable or stochastic, might affect organisms differently than do abrupt changes. To explore this possibility, we exposed terrestrial isopods (Porcellio scaber) collected from a highly seasonal environment to four thermal treatments: (1) a constant 20 degrees C; (2) a constant 10 degrees C; (3) a steady decline from 20 degrees to 10 degrees C; and (4) a stochastic decline from 20 degrees to 10 degrees C that mimicked natural conditions during autumn. After …
