Oak Galls: A Strange Biology Indeed!, W. John Hayden Jul 2011

Oak Galls: A Strange Biology Indeed!, W. John Hayden

Biology Faculty Publications

Anyone who takes the time to look closely at several branches of oak will soon find one or another peculiar anomaly among the leaves and twigs. One can easily find structures resembling Ping-Pong balls, hard knots, fluffy tufts, horns—either single or clustered, or irregular thickenings, to mention just a few possibilities. These abnormal growths are galls, structures caused by the presence of small insect larvae living inside the tissue of the plant. Galls can be found on a wide variety of plants. They are common, for example, on the stems of goldenrods, and the leaves of maples, but oaks are …

A Probabilistic Analysis Of A Simplified Biogeography-Based Optimization Algorithm, Daniel J. Simon Jul 2011

A Probabilistic Analysis Of A Simplified Biogeography-Based Optimization Algorithm, Daniel J. Simon

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

Biogeography-based optimization (BBO) is a population-based evolutionary algorithm (EA) that is based on the mathematics of biogeography. Biogeography is the study of the geographical distribution of biological organisms. We present a simplified version of BBO and perform an approximate analysis of the BBO population using probability theory. Our analysis provides approximate values for the expected number of generations before the population's best solution improves, and the expected amount of improvement. These expected values are functions of the population size. We quantify three behaviors as the population size increases: first, we see that the best solution in the initial randomly generated …

Obama's Presidential (Mixed) Race: Framing And Ideological Analysis Of Blogs And News, Iliana Rucker Jul 2011

Obama's Presidential (Mixed) Race: Framing And Ideological Analysis Of Blogs And News, Iliana Rucker

Communication ETDs

The election of Barack Obama as President of the United States brought a heightened awareness to the role of race and produced speculation about the idealized notion of the achievement of a post-racial United States. This dissertation examined mediated conversations on mixed race identity in response to some of the significant events in the Obama campaign and the first months of the Obama presidency. Specifically, this study examined the ways that newspapers and blogs construct discourses about race, mixed race, and racism. Further, I explored the biological, legal, and social implications as they relate to current constructions of mixed race …

Immigration Discourses In The U.S. And In Japan, Chie Torigoe Jul 2011

Immigration Discourses In The U.S. And In Japan, Chie Torigoe

Communication ETDs

The primary purpose of this study was to investigate how systems of racial inequality and dominance produced at macro-institutional level discourses are reproduced and/or challenged in micro-interpersonal everyday discourses regarding immigration/foreign workers in the U.S. and in Japan. To establish a link between the discourses at these two levels, I employed a combination of critical and interpretive theoretical perspectives, and analyzed how racial ideologies were reproduced and/or challenged through participants' use of various interpretative repertoires (i.e., discursive themes and specific rhetorical moves therein) and positioning of self and Others. Interpretative repertoires and discursive positioning of self and Others are major …

Nopalitos Mean Something: Communicating Identity In Mother-Daughter Relationships Through Food And Recipe, Darla Antoine Jul 2011

Nopalitos Mean Something: Communicating Identity In Mother-Daughter Relationships Through Food And Recipe, Darla Antoine

Communication ETDs

The purpose of this thesis is to analyze a memoir/cookbook to highlight the unique role of food and recipes in relationships among women—specifically within mother-daughter relationships. The text highlights how food and recipes can become emotionally entwined in our life stories and in our relationships. Using cluster analysis, the analytical research of this thesis creates conversations about food and recipes as communicative vessels of intimacy and legacy among women and their daughters. Finally, this thesis demonstrates new ways food and recipes may help women navigate their own identities within both the psychoanalytical stages of the Oedipal complex and the psychological …

It's Like A Giant Game Of Telephone: Physicians' Perceptions Of Effective Communication In The Emergency Department Context', Marleah Dean Jul 2011

It's Like A Giant Game Of Telephone: Physicians' Perceptions Of Effective Communication In The Emergency Department Context', Marleah Dean

Communication ETDs

Despite the growing number of emergency department visits, effective communication between patients and physicians are often overlooked because of the fast- paced nature of the emergency department (ED). As such, we do not know what is seen as effective communication within this particular context. Therefore, the goal of this study was to learn how emergency department physicians define effective communication and identify the barriers and facilitators to communicating in the ED. Seventeen semi-structured, open-ended interviews were conducted with ED physicians. Interviews were recorded and transcribed into a Word document. Data analysis included two steps—the constant comparison method (Lindlof & Taylor, …

Gender-Responsive Budgeting And Its Impact On The Status Of Women And Men In Pasay City, Divina M. Edralin Jul 2011

Gender-Responsive Budgeting And Its Impact On The Status Of Women And Men In Pasay City, Divina M. Edralin

DLSU Business & Economics Review

This study on Gender-Responsive Budgeting is based primarily on the Community-Based Monitoring System (CMBS) individual-level (more than 263,000 individuals) and household-level (more than 65,000 households) data of Pasay City for 2005. Other supplemental information from the documents of the different offices of the City Government was used to answer the objectives of the study. However, the lack of disaggregated data based on gender and age from the CBMS database and the Pasay City Government reports made it difficult to substantially determine whether the City’s programs and budgets have been responsive to gender differentials in the different aspects of quality of …

Breaking The Criminogenic Code: A Frame Analysis Of Neo-Nazi And Violent Jihadi Propaganda, William Travis Morris Jul 2011

Breaking The Criminogenic Code: A Frame Analysis Of Neo-Nazi And Violent Jihadi Propaganda, William Travis Morris

Student Work

This dissertation focuses on neo-Nazi and violent jihadi propaganda and its role in defining social boundaries. Frame analysis was used to gain a deeper understanding of how neo-Nazis and violent jihadis construct propaganda to neutralize objections and promote drift. Specifically, diagnostic and prognostic frames were analyzed for 10 "effective" propagandists and two "ineffective" propagandists in a comparative framework. This research uses a social psychological perspective, paying particular attention to the emotion of shame and advances the "violence as communication" model into "terrorism as criminogenic propaganda." Qualitative and quantitative methods were used to analyze how neo-Nazi and violent jihadi propagandists incorporate …

The Effects Of System Reliability And Time Pressure On Unoccupied Aircraft Systems Operator Performance And Mental Workload, Rania Wageh Ghatas Jul 2011

The Effects Of System Reliability And Time Pressure On Unoccupied Aircraft Systems Operator Performance And Mental Workload, Rania Wageh Ghatas

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses

Unoccupied Aircraft Systems (UAS) are in the midst of aviation`s next generation. UAS are being utilized at an increasing rate by military and security operations and are becoming widely popular in usage from search and rescue and weather research to homeland security and border patrol. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is currently working to define acceptable UAS performance standards and procedures for routine access for their use in the National Airspace System (NAS). This study examined the effects of system reliability and time pressure on unoccupied aircraft systems operator performance and mental workload. Twenty-four undergraduate and graduate students, male and …

A Guide For Homeland Security Instructors Preparing Physical Critical Infrastructure Protection Courses, Steven Hart, James D. Ramsay Jul 2011

A Guide For Homeland Security Instructors Preparing Physical Critical Infrastructure Protection Courses, Steven Hart, James D. Ramsay

Applied Aviation Sciences - Daytona Beach

Over 350 academic programs in the United States currently offer instruction in the field of homeland defense and security. In spite of this growth at the program level over the past ten years, there still exists a shortage of instructors and coursework in critical infrastructure protection (CIP). Traditional instructor preparation (which is accomplished through the attainment of an advanced degree coupled with research and professional experience) does not currently produce enough instructors qualified in CIP because of the extremely limited number of CIP-related educational opportunities. Therefore, an alternate venue for instructor preparation must be provided. This article addresses that need …

Roles Of Autophagy In Hiv-1 Infection, Christina Archer Dinkins Jul 2011

Roles Of Autophagy In Hiv-1 Infection, Christina Archer Dinkins

Biomedical Sciences ETDs

Human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) chronically infects approximately 30 million people worldwide. HIV-1 has become one of the most difficult viral infections to treat due to its high mutability and emerging drug resistance. Critical to our development of more effective therapeutic treatments, we must better understand the HIV life cycle in order to reveal better targets for drug development. Thus, the purpose of this work was to investigate the role of autophagy, a cellular homeostatic mechanism capable of eliminating intracellular pathogens, in HIV-1 infection of two relevant hosts, the human and the Old World non-permissive primate, the rhesus macaque. …

Insulin-Like Growth Factor 1 And Transforming Growth Factor-Β Stimulate Cystine/Glutamate Exchange Activity In Dental Pulp Cells, Katherine Pauly, Kymberly Fritz, Alyssa Furey, Doug Lobner Jul 2011

Insulin-Like Growth Factor 1 And Transforming Growth Factor-Β Stimulate Cystine/Glutamate Exchange Activity In Dental Pulp Cells, Katherine Pauly, Kymberly Fritz, Alyssa Furey, Doug Lobner

Biomedical Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Introduction

The growth factors insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1) and transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) are protective to dental pulp cells in culture against the toxicity of the composite materials Durafill VS and Flow Line (Henry Schein Inc, New York, NY). Because the toxicity of these materials is mediated by oxidative stress, it seemed possible that the protective effects of IGF-1 and TGF-β were through the enhancement of an endogenous antioxidant mechanism.

Methods

We used cultured dental pulp cells to determine the mechanism of the protective effects of IGF-1 and TGF-β, focusing on the glutathione system and the role of cystine/glutamate exchange …

The Importance Of Early Counseling And Education Of Persons Diagnosed With Alzheimer's Disease And Their Caregivers, Haley Pottorff Basnett Jul 2011

The Importance Of Early Counseling And Education Of Persons Diagnosed With Alzheimer's Disease And Their Caregivers, Haley Pottorff Basnett

Research Papers

When people are diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, they go through periods of depression simply because the prognosis is eventual and certain death. By the same token, many healthcare professionals and insurance companies with whom individuals and their families must deal take an often cold approach to the diagnosis, considering counseling as a waste of time for a situation in which a physical prognosis is hopeless. In treating the physical aspect of the disease, many doctors do in fact prescribe an antidepressant, which ironically, will exacerbate the physical condition of the person affected, hastening the physical decline. Therefore, while the ultimate tragedy …
