Finding Robust-Under-Risk Solutions For Flowshop Scheduling, Steven O. Kimbrough, Ann Kuo, Hoong Chuin Lau
Finding Robust-Under-Risk Solutions For Flowshop Scheduling, Steven O. Kimbrough, Ann Kuo, Hoong Chuin Lau
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
We propose and explore, in the context of benchmark problems for flowshop scheduling, a risk-based concept of robustness for optimization problems. This risk-based concept is in distinction to, and complements, the uncertainty-based concept employed in the field known as robust optimization. Implementation of our concept requires problem solution methods that sample the solution space intelligently and that produce large numbers of distinct sample points. With these solutions to hand, their robustness scores are easily obtained and heuristically robust solutions found. We find evolutionary computation to be effective for this purpose on these problems.
Parallel Learning To Rank For Information Retrieval, Shuaiqiang Wang, Byron J. Gao, Ke Wang, Hady W. Lauw
Parallel Learning To Rank For Information Retrieval, Shuaiqiang Wang, Byron J. Gao, Ke Wang, Hady W. Lauw
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Learning to rank represents a category of effective ranking methods for information retrieval. While the primary concern of existing research has been accuracy, learning efficiency is becoming an important issue due to the unprecedented availability of large-scale training data and the need for continuous update of ranking functions. In this paper, we investigate parallel learning to rank, targeting simultaneous improvement in accuracy and efficiency.
Mining Weakly Labeled Web Facial Images For Search-Based Face Annotation, Dayang Wang, Steven C. H. Hoi, Ying He
Mining Weakly Labeled Web Facial Images For Search-Based Face Annotation, Dayang Wang, Steven C. H. Hoi, Ying He
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In this paper, we investigate a search-based face annotation framework by mining weakly labeled facial images that are freely available on the internet. A key component of such a search-based annotation paradigm is to build a database of facial images with accurate labels. This is however challenging since facial images on the WWW are often noisy and incomplete. To improve the label quality of raw web facial images, we propose an effective Unsupervised Label Refinement (ULR) approach for refining the labels of web facial images by exploring machine learning techniques. We develop effective optimization algorithms to solve the large-scale learning …

Innate And Learned Preferences For Sweet Taste During Childhood, Alison K. Ventura, Julie A. Mennella
Innate And Learned Preferences For Sweet Taste During Childhood, Alison K. Ventura, Julie A. Mennella
Kinesiology and Public Health
Purpose of review: In nature, carbohydrates are a source of energy often equated with sweetness, the detection of which is associated with powerful hedonic appeal. Intakes of processed carbohydrates in the form of added sugars and sugar-sweetened beverages have risen consistently among all age groups over the last two decades. In this review, we describe the biological underpinnings that drive the consumption of sweet-tasting foods among pediatric populations.
Recent findings: Scientific literature suggests that children's liking for all that is sweet is not solely a product of modern-day technology and advertising but reflects their basic biology. In fact, heightened preference …
Invertebrate Zooid Polymorphism: Hydractinia Polyclina And Pagurus Longicarpus Interactions Mediated Through Spiralzooids, Charlotte M. Regula-Whitefield
Invertebrate Zooid Polymorphism: Hydractinia Polyclina And Pagurus Longicarpus Interactions Mediated Through Spiralzooids, Charlotte M. Regula-Whitefield
All Theses And Dissertations
Evaluating the net interaction between symbionts can be challenging when one participant is a colonial animal with polymorphic zooids, because each zooid type has unique functions. The colonial hydroid Hydractinia polyclina has three distinct zooid types, each of which contributes particular components to the interaction with host hermit crabs. Of these three zooid types, the function of spiralzooids is not well understood. Previously, spiralzooids have been proposed to contribute a strong negative interaction component by directly reducing their host hermit crab’s reproductive output. However, this hypothesis is not supported by past or current data. I propose that spiralzooids instead function …

Oak Galls: A Strange Biology Indeed!, W. John Hayden
Oak Galls: A Strange Biology Indeed!, W. John Hayden
Biology Faculty Publications
Anyone who takes the time to look closely at several branches of oak will soon find one or another peculiar anomaly among the leaves and twigs. One can easily find structures resembling Ping-Pong balls, hard knots, fluffy tufts, horns—either single or clustered, or irregular thickenings, to mention just a few possibilities. These abnormal growths are galls, structures caused by the presence of small insect larvae living inside the tissue of the plant. Galls can be found on a wide variety of plants. They are common, for example, on the stems of goldenrods, and the leaves of maples, but oaks are …
A Probabilistic Analysis Of A Simplified Biogeography-Based Optimization Algorithm, Daniel J. Simon
A Probabilistic Analysis Of A Simplified Biogeography-Based Optimization Algorithm, Daniel J. Simon
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
Biogeography-based optimization (BBO) is a population-based evolutionary algorithm (EA) that is based on the mathematics of biogeography. Biogeography is the study of the geographical distribution of biological organisms. We present a simplified version of BBO and perform an approximate analysis of the BBO population using probability theory. Our analysis provides approximate values for the expected number of generations before the population's best solution improves, and the expected amount of improvement. These expected values are functions of the population size. We quantify three behaviors as the population size increases: first, we see that the best solution in the initial randomly generated …
Obama's Presidential (Mixed) Race: Framing And Ideological Analysis Of Blogs And News, Iliana Rucker
Obama's Presidential (Mixed) Race: Framing And Ideological Analysis Of Blogs And News, Iliana Rucker
Communication ETDs
The election of Barack Obama as President of the United States brought a heightened awareness to the role of race and produced speculation about the idealized notion of the achievement of a post-racial United States. This dissertation examined mediated conversations on mixed race identity in response to some of the significant events in the Obama campaign and the first months of the Obama presidency. Specifically, this study examined the ways that newspapers and blogs construct discourses about race, mixed race, and racism. Further, I explored the biological, legal, and social implications as they relate to current constructions of mixed race …
Immigration Discourses In The U.S. And In Japan, Chie Torigoe
Immigration Discourses In The U.S. And In Japan, Chie Torigoe
Communication ETDs
The primary purpose of this study was to investigate how systems of racial inequality and dominance produced at macro-institutional level discourses are reproduced and/or challenged in micro-interpersonal everyday discourses regarding immigration/foreign workers in the U.S. and in Japan. To establish a link between the discourses at these two levels, I employed a combination of critical and interpretive theoretical perspectives, and analyzed how racial ideologies were reproduced and/or challenged through participants' use of various interpretative repertoires (i.e., discursive themes and specific rhetorical moves therein) and positioning of self and Others. Interpretative repertoires and discursive positioning of self and Others are major …
Nopalitos Mean Something: Communicating Identity In Mother-Daughter Relationships Through Food And Recipe, Darla Antoine
Nopalitos Mean Something: Communicating Identity In Mother-Daughter Relationships Through Food And Recipe, Darla Antoine
Communication ETDs
The purpose of this thesis is to analyze a memoir/cookbook to highlight the unique role of food and recipes in relationships among women—specifically within mother-daughter relationships. The text highlights how food and recipes can become emotionally entwined in our life stories and in our relationships. Using cluster analysis, the analytical research of this thesis creates conversations about food and recipes as communicative vessels of intimacy and legacy among women and their daughters. Finally, this thesis demonstrates new ways food and recipes may help women navigate their own identities within both the psychoanalytical stages of the Oedipal complex and the psychological …
It's Like A Giant Game Of Telephone: Physicians' Perceptions Of Effective Communication In The Emergency Department Context', Marleah Dean
It's Like A Giant Game Of Telephone: Physicians' Perceptions Of Effective Communication In The Emergency Department Context', Marleah Dean
Communication ETDs
Despite the growing number of emergency department visits, effective communication between patients and physicians are often overlooked because of the fast- paced nature of the emergency department (ED). As such, we do not know what is seen as effective communication within this particular context. Therefore, the goal of this study was to learn how emergency department physicians define effective communication and identify the barriers and facilitators to communicating in the ED. Seventeen semi-structured, open-ended interviews were conducted with ED physicians. Interviews were recorded and transcribed into a Word document. Data analysis included two steps—the constant comparison method (Lindlof & Taylor, …
Gender-Responsive Budgeting And Its Impact On The Status Of Women And Men In Pasay City, Divina M. Edralin
Gender-Responsive Budgeting And Its Impact On The Status Of Women And Men In Pasay City, Divina M. Edralin
DLSU Business & Economics Review
This study on Gender-Responsive Budgeting is based primarily on the Community-Based Monitoring System (CMBS) individual-level (more than 263,000 individuals) and household-level (more than 65,000 households) data of Pasay City for 2005. Other supplemental information from the documents of the different offices of the City Government was used to answer the objectives of the study. However, the lack of disaggregated data based on gender and age from the CBMS database and the Pasay City Government reports made it difficult to substantially determine whether the City’s programs and budgets have been responsive to gender differentials in the different aspects of quality of …
