Shaken Baby Syndrome As A Form Of Abusive Head Trauma, Muna Al-Saadoon, Ibtisam B. Elnour, Anuradha
Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal
Shaken baby syndrome (SBS) is a form of abuse that is characterised by brain injury. Because of the subtle and yet debilitating neurobehavioural impairment which ensues, SBS represents a diagnostic dilemma for attending clinicians. The situation is made worse by the young age of the affected child who may not be capable of explaining what happened. SBS has been reported in many parts of the world. To our knowledge, there is a dearth of literature on the topic from Arab/Islamic countries. This article attempts to shed light on the syndrome by reviewing information on the aetiology of SBS, as well …

Higher Learning Research Communications
Blended learning combines face-to-face class based and online teaching and learning delivery in order to increase flexibility in how, when, and where students study and learn. The development, integration, and promotion of blended learning in frameworks of curriculum design can optimize the opportunities afforded by information and communication technologies and, concomitantly, accommodate a broad range of student learning styles. This study critically reviews the potential benefits of blended learning as a progressive educative paradigm for the teaching of biomedical science and evaluates the opportunities that blended learning offers for the delivery of accessible, flexible and sustainable teaching and learning experiences. …
Effect Of Pre-Drying Handling On Quality Of Final Dried Bombay Duck (Harpodon Neherius), Krishna Prasad Nooralabettu
Effect Of Pre-Drying Handling On Quality Of Final Dried Bombay Duck (Harpodon Neherius), Krishna Prasad Nooralabettu
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
Proliferation of spoilage microorganisms during preprocessing delay, with associated deteriorative changes in non-protein nitrogenous substances and lipids, and its impact of the sensory characteristics of the final dried products were studied. Bombay duck was judged as unfit for human consumption beyond 8 hrs of exposure at 28°C. However, chilling the fish to 0°C or salting the fish after gutting at 28°C or drying at 45°C without delay effectively reduced the proliferation of spoilage microorganisms, and associated biochemical and sensory characteristics during drying. Higher levels of proteolytic and lipolytic bacterial load, free fatty acids, trimethylamine and total volatile bases due to …

The Enzyme Activities Of Opine And Lactate Dehydrogenases In The Gills, Mantle, Foot, And Adductor Of The Hard Clam Meretrix Lusoria, An-Chin Lee, Kuen-Tsung Lee
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
Alanopine dehydrogenase (ADH) and both ADH and strombine dehydrogenase (SDH) are respectively the major opine dehydrogenases in the gills and mantle of hard clam under normoxia. However, ADH, octopine dehydrogenase (ODH), and SDH are the predominant opine dehydrogenases in the foot and adductor of the hard clam under normoxia. After anoxic exposure, significant increases in the activities of opine dehydrogenases in the gills were observed for ADH as well as SDH and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH). However, the activities of ADH and SDH in the mantle were not responsive to anoxic exposure. Activities of ADH, ODH, SDH, and LDH in the …

Anti-Cancer Effects Of Polysaccharide And Phycocyanin From Porphyra Yezoensis, Lu-Xi Zhang, Chun-Er Cai, Ting-Ting Guo, Jia-Wen Gu, Hong-Li Xu, Yun Zhou, Yuan Wang, Cheng-Chu Liu, Pei-Min He
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
In this paper, phycocyanin and one component (PY-D2) in polysaccharide were obtained from Porphyra yezoensis to study for their potential anti-tumor effects. MTT proliferation assays showed that, at concentration of 500 mg/L for 72 h, PY-D2 treatment significantly inhibited the growth of four tumor cell lines, HO-8910, MCF-7, K562 and SMMC-7721, with the respective inhibition rates of 21.2%, 23.6%, 19.8%, and 21%. Flow cytometry analysis indicated that the anti-tumor effect of PY-D2 was associated with the cell cycle arrest at G0/G1 or G2/M check-points. Two cancer cell lines, Hep-2 and A375 were treated by different concentrations of phycocyanin, followed by …
Determining The Mechanism Of Double-Stranded Rna-Induced Cell Death In Ovarian Cancer., Danielle Van
Determining The Mechanism Of Double-Stranded Rna-Induced Cell Death In Ovarian Cancer., Danielle Van
Theses and Dissertations
Ovarian cancer is the most lethal of all gynecological cancers. Current ovarian cancer drug regimens, including taxanes and platinum-based agents, are susceptible to chemoresistance necessitating the development of novel chemotherapeutics. Within tumors pathogen-derived ligands, such as dsRNA, can activate pattern recognition receptors (PRRs) that are capable of inducing apoptosis. In this dissertation we have found that in ovarian cancer cell lines (DOV-13, SKOV-3, CAOV-3, and OVCAR-3), dsRNA treatment alters cell survival. When treated with dsRNA, ovarian cancer cell lines and patient samples could be divided into two categories, responsive which undergo significant levels of apoptosis (CAOV-3 and OVCAR-3) or non-responsive …

Malaria is a re-emerging infectious disease with approximately half of the world's population at risk. In the US, since the 1950’s the Center for Disease Control (CDC) has been reporting between 1,000 and 1,500 cases of malaria every year. A majority of these cases were among US travellers and were attributed to Plasmodium falciparum. In August 2002, two cases of human malaria due to Plasmodium vivax were reported in Loudoun County, Northern Virginia. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention concluded that these cases were acquired locally. This was because of an absence of other risk factors such as international …
Legacy Sediments In Streams - Effects On Nutrient Partitioning During Simulated Re-Suspension Events., Molly Sobotka
Legacy Sediments In Streams - Effects On Nutrient Partitioning During Simulated Re-Suspension Events., Molly Sobotka
Theses and Dissertations
Anthropogenic inputs of nutrients and sediment are a widespread problem in U.S. streams causing localized impairment and contributing to eutrophication of coastal habitats. Sediments and dissolved nutrients interact through diverse processes including ion exchange, sorption and biotic assimilation by particle-bound bacteria. This study examined the effects of sediment re-suspension on nutrient partitioning in lab microcosms using fine benthic matter collected from two Virginia Coastal Plain streams. Kimages Creek was recently restored following dam removal and was characterized by large deposits of legacy sediments. Courthouse Creek was characterized by sandy substrates typical of Coastal Plain streams. Sediment characteristics differed between the …

Biology, Chemistry, and Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles and Research
The lysyl-tRNA synthetase paralog PoxA modifies elongation factor P (EF-P) with α-lysine at low efficiency. Cell-free extracts containing non–α-lysine substrates of PoxA modified EF-P with a change in mass consistent with addition of β-lysine, a substrate also predicted by genomic analyses. EF-P was efficiently functionally modified with (R)-β-lysine but not (S)-β-lysine or genetically encoded α-amino acids, indicating that PoxA has evolved an activity orthogonal to that of the canonical aminoacyl-tRNA synthetases.

The evolution of the amniotic egg was one of the great evolutionary innovations in the history of life, freeing vertebrates from an obligatory connection to water and thus permitting the conquest of terrestrial environments1. Among amniotes, genome sequences are available for mammals2 and birds3–5, but not for non-avian reptiles. Here we report the genome sequence of the North American green anole lizard, Anolis carolinensis. We find that A. carolinensis microchromosomes are highly syntenic with chicken microchromosomes, yet do not exhibit the high GC and low repeat content that are characteristic of avian microchromosomes3. Also, A. carolinensis mobile elements are very …

Partnering Industry And Education For Curricular Enhancement: A Response For Greater Educational Achievement, Deborah R. Barnett
Online Journal for Workforce Education and Development
Despite high rates of unemployment, research indicates that employers are having a difficult time finding workers that have the knowledge and skills needed for available jobs. President Obama, state lawmakers, and national higher education associations are calling upon educational institutions to not only fill the current gap but to reach aggressive goals set for educational attainment in the U.S. by 2020. This article looks at a historical view of how education has met workforce needs in the past, employment projections, employer needs, and how educational institutions might respond to the call to develop a highly skilled workforce. In addition, a …

Genomic Evidence For An African Expansion Of Anatomically Modern Humans By A Southern Route, Silvia Ghirotto, Luca Penso-Dolfin, Guido Barbujani
Genomic Evidence For An African Expansion Of Anatomically Modern Humans By A Southern Route, Silvia Ghirotto, Luca Penso-Dolfin, Guido Barbujani
Human Biology
There is general agreement among scientists about a recent (less than 200,000 yrs ago) African origin of anatomically modern humans, whereas there is still uncertainty about whether, and to what extent, they admixed with archaic populations, which thus may have contributed to the modern populations’ gene pools. Data on cranial morphology have been interpreted as suggesting that, before the main expansion from Africa through the Near East, anatomically modern humans may also have taken a Southern route from the Horn of Africa through the Arabian peninsula to India, Melanesia and Australia, about 100,000 yrs ago. This view was recently supported …

Paternal Genetic History Of The Basque Population Of Spain, Kristin L. Young, Guangyun Sun, Ranjan Deka, Michael H. Crawford
Human Biology
This study examines the genetic variation in Basque Y chromosome lineages using data on 12 Y-short tandem repeat (STR) loci in a sample of 158 males from four Basque provinces of Spain (Alava, Vizcaya, Guipuzcoa, and Navarre). As reported in previous studies, the Basques are characterized by high frequencies of haplogroup R1b (83%). AMOVA analysis demonstrates genetic homogeneity, with a small but significant amount of genetic structure between provinces (Y-short tandem repeat loci STRs: 1.71%, p 0.0369). Gene and haplotype diversity levels in the Basque population are on the low end of the European distribution (gene diversity: 0.4268; haplotype diversity: …
Correlates Of Self-Efficacy To Disclose Injection Drug Use To Hiv Primary Care Providers Among A Sample Of Hiv Seropositive Injection Drug Users, Yves Jeanty
Open Access Dissertations
This dissertation sought to identify correlates of perceived self-efficacy to disclose drug use to one’s HIV primary care provider (DISDR) among a sample of HIV-positive injection drug users (IDUs). Additionally the relationship between identified correlates and DISDR was evaluated to determine whether it persists longitudinally. Potential correlates consisted of individual characteristics (socio-demographic), health care service utilization, sex/drug use behaviors, and psychosocial characteristics. It was postulated that selected variables from these domains would be associated with DISDR. This study presents baseline and longitudinal data that suggest a positive association between self-efficacy to disclose injection drug use to one’s HIV primary care …

Biology
In the postnatal vasculature, fully differentiated and quiescent vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) in a “contractile” phenotype are required for the normal regulation of vascular tone. The transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) superfamily of growth factors (TGF-βs and bone morphogenetic proteins (BMPs)) are potent inducers of contractile phenotype and mediate (i) induction of contractile genes, and (ii) inhibition of VSMC growth and migration. Transcription of contractile genes is positively regulated by a regulatory DNA element called a CArG box. The CArG box is activated by the binding of serum response factor and its coactivators, myocardin (Myocd) or Myocd-related transcription factors (MRTFs). …

The blind subterranean mole rat (Spalax ehrenbergi superspecies) is a model animal for survival under extreme environments due to its ability to live in underground habitats under severe hypoxic stress and darkness. Here we report the transcriptome sequencing of Spalax galili, a chromosomal type of S. ehrenbergi. cDNA pools from muscle and brain tissues isolated from animals exposed to hypoxic and normoxic conditions were sequenced using Sanger, GS FLX, and GS FLX Titanium technologies. Assembly of the sequences yielded over 51,000 isotigs with homology to ~12,000 mouse, rat or human genes. Based on these results, it was …

BACKGROUND: The geographic overlap between HIV-1 and malaria has generated much interest in their potential interactions. A variety of studies have evidenced a complex HIV-malaria interaction within individuals and populations that may have dramatic effects, but the causes and implications of this co-infection at the population level are still unclear. In a previous publication, we showed that the prevalence of malaria caused by the parasite Plasmodium falciparum is associated with HIV infection in eastern sub-Saharan Africa. To complement our knowledge of the HIV-malaria co-infection, the objective of this work was to assess the relationship between malaria and HIV prevalence in …

Let's Get Physical: The Role Of Physical Activity In The Training Of Graduate Mental Health Students, Cassandra Pasquariello
Theses and Dissertations
There is growing awareness of the role of physical activity (PA) in the prevention and treatment of health disorders. Mental health practitioners are well positioned to provide PA counseling and may have ethical obligations to address PA. Researchers have cited insufficient training as a barrier to PA counseling, yet little is known about training in mental health. This exploratory study examines the need for training students in PA counseling. A national sample of 361 current graduate students in psychology, social work, rehabilitation counseling, and psychiatric nursing completed a Web-based survey on their training, knowledge, attitude towards PA, personal PA, and …
