Receptors localized at the plasma membrane are critical for the recognition of pathogens. The molecular determinants that regulate receptor transport to the plasma membrane are poorly understood. In a screen for proteins that interact with the FLAGELIN-SENSITIVE2 (FLS2) receptor using Arabidopsis thaliana protein microarrays, we identified the reticulon-like protein RTNLB1. We showed that FLS2 interacts in vivo with both RTNLB1 and its homolog RTNLB2 and that a Ser-rich region in the N-terminal tail of RTNLB1 is critical for the interaction with FLS2. Transgenic plants that lack RTNLB1 and RTNLB2 (rtnlb1 rtnlb2) or overexpress RTNLB1 (RTNLB1ox) exhibit reduced activation of FLS2-dependent …

The identification of genome-wide cis-regulatory modules (CRMs) and characterization of their associated epigenetic features are fundamental steps toward the understanding of gene regulatory networks. Although integrative analysis of available genome-wide information can provide new biological insights, the lack of novel methodologies has become a major bottleneck. Here, we present a comprehensive analysis tool called combinatorial CRM decoder (CCD), which utilizes the publicly available information to identify and characterize genome-wide CRMs in a species of interest. CCD first defines a set of the epigenetic features which is significantly associated with a set of known CRMs as a code called 'trace code', …
Nonadaptive Evolution Of Mitochondrial Genome Size, Bastien Boussau, Jeremy M. Brown, Matthew K. Fujita
Nonadaptive Evolution Of Mitochondrial Genome Size, Bastien Boussau, Jeremy M. Brown, Matthew K. Fujita
Faculty Publications
Genomes vary greatly in size and complexity, and identifying the evolutionary forces that have generated this variation remains a major goal in biology. A controversial proposal is that most changes in genome size are initially deleterious and therefore are linked to episodes of decrease in effective population sizes. Support for this hypothesis comes from large-scale comparative analyses, but vanishes when phylogenetic nonindependence is taken into account. Another approach to test this hypothesis involves analyzing sequence evolution among clades where duplications have recently fixed. Here we show that episodes of fixation of duplications in mitochondrial genomes of the gecko Heteronotia binoei …

Interdisciplinary Campus, Interdisciplinary World: Reshaping Higher Education For The 21st Century, Editorial Staff
Interdisciplinary Campus, Interdisciplinary World: Reshaping Higher Education For The 21st Century, Editorial Staff
New Science
In recent years, interdisciplinary fields have increased in academia. Some, such as biomedical science and genomics, are pairings of disciplines that, through their combined knowledge, have created new fields with unique focuses. Others, such as urban studies and gender studies, combine politics, social science and history to create fields that educate the public and inform policymakers. In her book, Creating Interdisciplinary Campus Cultures, Julie Thompson Klein, Ph.D., professor of humanities in Wayne State University's Department of English, argues that these and other interdisciplinary fields are among the most important in modern higher education. Through recommendations and examples, the book …
The Potential For Indicators In The Management Of Climate Change Impacts On Cultural Heritage, Caithleen Daly
The Potential For Indicators In The Management Of Climate Change Impacts On Cultural Heritage, Caithleen Daly
Conference papers
The global scale and unpredictable nature of climate change impacts on cultural heritage poses a challenge for conservation management. This article explores the potential of indicators as an aid for decision makers in the heritage sector. The author proposes a new indicator tool for addressing long-term stone recession impacts that may be related to climate change. The indicator is being installed at two World Heritage sites in Ireland but no results are available. The prototype was developed during doctoral research at the Technological University of Dublin.
Eternal Security: The What If's And The Word Of God, Jason Rutherford
Eternal Security: The What If's And The Word Of God, Jason Rutherford
Theses and Dissertations
Eternal security is the doctrine that teaches that a redeemed individual will remain in a redeemed state, regardless of his or her action following conversion. God is the author and finisher of salvation, never a work of the individual human, either before or after belief. This doctrine rests upon both explicit teaching in the Scripture and in a clear understanding of what actually occurs in salvation. This thesis also contains an afterword that examines the effect of postmodernism on Biblical communication in the 21st century.
An Extension Of Life Course Theory Into The Child Welfare System, Shaun M. Gann
An Extension Of Life Course Theory Into The Child Welfare System, Shaun M. Gann
Theses and Dissertations
Over the past 20 years, Sampson and Laub's age-graded theory of informal social control, or life course theory, has become the epitome of developmental criminological theories. Life course theory is based on the premise of life trajectories that are influenced by turning points. Much research has examined possible turning points in the adult life course, such as marriage, employment, military service, and childbirth. However, few studies have attempted to determine possible turning points in the juvenile life course. In an attempt to address this lack of knowledge on juvenile turning points, this thesis presents an extension of life course theory …
Analyses Of Sorex Longirostris Distribution In Arkansas And Across The Mississippi River, Garrett Adam Mikel
Analyses Of Sorex Longirostris Distribution In Arkansas And Across The Mississippi River, Garrett Adam Mikel
Theses and Dissertations
The southeastern shrew (Sorex longirostris) is considered uncommon and a Species of Greatest Conservation Need in Arkansas, exhibiting an apparent gap in eastern Arkansas. Soricinae are exceptionally small and short-lived with limited dispersal, making them especially prone to speciation through long-term zoogeographic barriers to gene flow consistent with phylogeographic category 1. Therefore, I compiled Arkansas occurrences, evaluated persistence at previous capture sites in the state, surveyed additional counties, quantified microhabitat at my capture locations, and evaluated systematic status of S. longirostris east and west of the Mississippi River using mitochondrial DNA. Number of documented specimens in Arkansas has increased to …
Segmentation Of Non-Stationary Gene Expression Profiles Using Statistical Sequential Analysis, Jasmine Pahari
Segmentation Of Non-Stationary Gene Expression Profiles Using Statistical Sequential Analysis, Jasmine Pahari
Theses and Dissertations
Due to the dynamic nature of biological systems, gene expression data underlying temporal processes, such as the cell development or a disease progression, can exhibit significant regime changes to facilitate regulatory functions. Deciphering these dynamical changes is crucial to understanding the biological function and developing time-varying models of cellular evolution. In this thesis, we propose to detect the different dynamical regimes of gene expression profiles using statistical sequential analysis. The proposed algorithm segments the gene time-series into distinct homogeneous regimes of expression, during which the underlying dynamics of the gene can be assumed to be stationary. Finding the switch point …

On the 26 February 2002, the then Department of Agriculture released a media statement about the results of research conducted by Rob Manning and Nola Mercer about WA honeys’ antimicrobial activity using an assay developed in New Zealand. The research showed that Western Australian honey had some of the highest activity levels in the world due to a naturally occurring enzyme in the honey. Upon dilution of honey, the enzyme glucose oxidase produces low concentrations of hydrogen peroxide which is the source of its antimicrobial activity. It is different to Manuka (Leptospermum scoparium) honey from New Zealand which is termed …

Social Determinants And Dynamics Of Health Inequality In Nigeria, Hyacinth E. Ichoku, Emmanuel O. Nwosu
Social Determinants And Dynamics Of Health Inequality In Nigeria, Hyacinth E. Ichoku, Emmanuel O. Nwosu
Economic and Financial Review
This paper sheds light on the social determinants of health inequality in Nigeria by quantifying the dynamic relationship between socioeconomic indicators and child anthropomorphic outcomes. Applying multivariate regression analysis and the Blinder- Oaxaca decompositions on recent demographic and health survey [DHS] data the study shows that bad health is disproportionately concentrated on the poor and some geopolitical zones of the country. Differences in wealth account for about 58.0 per cent and 33.0 per cent of differences in child nutritional and underweight status between the poor and nonpoor. Although improving over time, these differences suggest better targeted social policy reforms in …
Hiv And Concurrent Sexual Partnerships: Modelling The Role Of Coital Dilution, Larry Sawers, Alan G. Isaac, Eileen Stillwaggon
Hiv And Concurrent Sexual Partnerships: Modelling The Role Of Coital Dilution, Larry Sawers, Alan G. Isaac, Eileen Stillwaggon
Economics Faculty Publications
Background: The concurrency hypothesis asserts that high prevalence of overlapping sexual partnerships explains extraordinarily high HIV levels in sub-Saharan Africa. Earlier simulation models show that the network effect of concurrency can increase HIV incidence, but those models do not account for the coital dilution effect (nonprimary partnerships have lower coital frequency than primary partnerships).
Methods: We modify the model of Eaton et al (AIDS and Behavior, September 2010) to incorporate coital dilution by assigning lower coital frequencies to non-primary partnerships. We parameterize coital dilution based on the empirical work of Morris et al (PLoS ONE, December …

Quantifying Forest Aboveground Carbon Pools And Fluxes Using Multi-Temporal Lidar, Lee Spangler, Lee A. Vierling
Quantifying Forest Aboveground Carbon Pools And Fluxes Using Multi-Temporal Lidar, Lee Spangler, Lee A. Vierling
United States Department of Energy: Publications
Sound policy recommendations relating to the role of forest management in mitigating atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) depend upon establishing accurate methodologies for quantifying forest carbon pools for large tracts of land that can be dynamically updated over time. Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) remote sensing is a promising technology for achieving accurate estimates of aboveground biomass and thereby carbon pools; however, not much is known about the accuracy of estimating biomass change and carbon flux from repeat LiDAR acquisitions containing different data sampling characteristics.
In this study, discrete return airborne LiDAR data was collected in 2003 and 2009 …

Tracking Solutes And Water From Subsurface Drip Irrigation Application Of Coalbed Methane–Produced Waters, Powder River Basin, Wyoming, Mark A. Engle, Carleton R. Bern, Richard W. Healy, James I. Sams, John W. Zupancic, Karl T. Schroeder
United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications
One method to beneficially use water produced from coalbed methane (CBM) extraction is subsurface drip irrigation (SDI) of croplands. In SDI systems, treated CBMwater (injectate) is supplied to the soil at depth, with the purpose of preventing the buildup of detrimental salts near the surface. The technology is expanding within the Powder River Basin, but little research has been published on its environmental impacts. This article reports on initial results from tracking water and solutes from the injected CBM-produced waters at an SDI system in Johnson County, Wyoming.
In the first year of SDI operation, soil moisture significantly increased in …

Single Molecule Analysis Of The Arabidopsis Fra1 Kinesin Shows That It Is A Functional Motor Protein With Unusually High Processivity, Chuanmei Zhu, Ram Dixit
Biology Faculty Research
The Arabidopsis FRA1 kinesin contributes to the organization of cellulose microfibrils through an unknown mechanism. The cortical localization of this kinesin during interphase raises the possibility that it transports cell wall-related cargoes along cortical microtubules that either directly or indirectly influence cellulose microfibril patterning. To determine whether FRA1 is an authentic motor protein, we combined bulk biochemical assays and single molecule fluorescence imaging to analyze the motor properties of recombinant, GFP-tagged FRA1 containing the motor and coiled-coil domains (designated as FRA1(707)–GFP). We found that FRA1(707)–GFP binds to microtubules in an ATP-dependent manner and that its ATPase activity is dramatically stimulated …
