Gene-therapy, the technique of inserting genes into cells to treat disease, holds promise for many areas of medicine. For Zhuo-Hua Pan, Ph.D., professor of anatomy and cell biology in the School of Medicine, and Sean Ainsworth, founder of RetroSense Therapeutics LLC, the breakthrough therapy means restoring vision to millions of people suffering with incurable blindness. Pan, along with colleagues at Salus University, has developed a novel gene-therapy approach for treating blindness caused by age-related macular degeneration (AMD) and retinitis pigmentosa (RP)--disorders that are currently incurable. The treatment delivers a photoreceptor gene from blue-green algae, which converts previously non-photosensitive retinal cells …

Individual And Family Correlates Of Adolescents' Sexual Behavior: Multiethnic Findings, Claudia Anagurthi, Ashley Cahill Johnson, Cheryl L. Somers
Individual And Family Correlates Of Adolescents' Sexual Behavior: Multiethnic Findings, Claudia Anagurthi, Ashley Cahill Johnson, Cheryl L. Somers
Michigan Journal of Counseling: Research, Theory and Practice
The purpose of this study was to examine correlates of adolescent sexual activity, including age of first date, family composition, clarity of long term goals, and maternal and paternal views about premarital sex. There were 672 males and females, three races/ethnicities, both urban and suburban settings, and socioeconomic diversity. Sexual behavior was most related to parental views about premarital sex, adolescents’ own values toward premarital sex, clarity of adolescents’ long term goals, and the age when adolescents first learned about sexual intercourse. Important implications for sex education are discussed. Potential intervention variations by gender and race/ethnicity should be considered.

Gender Patterns In Dress And Outward Appearance: An Individual Choice Or Fulfillment Of Cultural Expectations?, Caroline J. Lindemuth, Lindsey A. Thomas, Hadley A. Mates, Jenessa A. Casey
Modern Psychological Studies
This study examines the extent to which males and females conform to gender schemas regarding outward appearance and clothing styles. Participants were observed from a distance in various natural settings and were coded based on estimated age, hair length, certain clothing choices, and certain jewelry and accessory choices. We found statistically significant gender differences (with p <.0001) for all characteristics, with the codes for hair length, earrings, and dresses showing the strongest discrepancies. These data showed a pattern of males being more confined to strict gender displays than were females, which can be seen particularly clearly in the wearing of earrings and dresses, as males rarely deviated from the socially acceptable gender signals. These findings imply that the feminist movement loosened feminine standards for dress and appearance; lacking a similar social movement, men remain more strictly confined to traditional displays of gender.
The Effects Of Video Game Play On Academic Performance, Jancee Wright
The Effects Of Video Game Play On Academic Performance, Jancee Wright
Modern Psychological Studies
The purpose of the present research is to determine whether playing video games impacts academic performance as determined by GPA. To accomplish this, 198 participants filled out a Gaming Habits Survey which was analyzed using a series of one-way ANOVAs. The study found that there was a significant effect of player status on GPA at the p < .01 level for the two conditions of player versus non-player [F (1, 169) = 7.08, p = .009]. Comparisons using descriptive statistics indicated that the mean GPA score for the player condition (M = 3.2, SD = .51) was significantly different than the non-player condition (M = 3.4, SD = .47). These results show that participants who indicated that they did play video games had significantly lower GPAs than participants who indicated that they did not play video games.
Expression Of Hyp-O-Glycan Modified Protein In Plant Using Transient And Cell Culture Platforms, Di Wu
Expression Of Hyp-O-Glycan Modified Protein In Plant Using Transient And Cell Culture Platforms, Di Wu
Student Theses and Dissertations
Plants have emerged as cost-effective, efficient factories to produce foreign proteins of pharmaceutical importance. Agrobacterium-mediated transient expression provides a rapid and simple plant system for production but is often linked with low protein recovery. Plant-specific hydroxyproline (Hyp)-O-glycosylation has been demonstrated to increase protein stability and solubility (termed Hyp-Glyco technology). To test if Hyp-glycans attached to a target protein can improve overall transiently expressed protein yields, EGFP reporter protein was expressed as fusion with a 5 or 32 repeats of Ser-Pro motif ((SP)5 or (SP)32 ) that directs extensive Hyp-O-glycosylation. My thesis project has provided the first demonstration that the Hyp-O-glcosylation …

Geo-Spatial Analysis Of Activity Spaces In A Tod Environment – Tracking Impacts Of Rail Transport Policy Using Kernel Density Estimation, Markus Botte, Doina Olaru
World Transit Research
Activity spaces are dynamic, “people-based” accessibility measures that can be used to analyse spatial arrangements of travel. This paper reports on activity spaces in context of transport policy aimed at changing travel behaviour by offering alternative transport options and new urban services within transit-oriented developments (TOD) environments. Specifically, we explore associations between TOD and activity spaces to derive visually easy comprehensible indicators, assisting practitioners and policy makers in determining decision-making effectiveness. We analyse results from household travel diaries collected within three unique TOD precincts in Perth, Western Australia situated alongside a 72km new metro-rail link, pre- and postopening, to identify …

Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations
Staphylococcus aureus is a leading cause of opportunistic infection worldwide and a significant public health threat. The iron-regulated surface determinant A (IsdA) adhesin is essential for S. aureus colonization on human nasal epithelial cells and plays an important role in iron acquisition and resistance to human skin defenses. Here we investigated the murine immune response to intranasal administration of a cholera toxin (CT) A2/B chimera containing IsdA. Plasmids were constructed to express the IsdA-CTA2/B chimera and control proteins in E. coli. Proper construction of the chimera was verified by SDS-PAGE, western blot, GM1 ELISA, and …

Document management has become an important consideration for the scientific community over the last decade. Human knowledge is central to many scientific domains, thus it is not possible to completely automate the document management process. Managing scientific documents require a semi-automatic approach to overcome issues of large volume, yet support the human participation in the process. In this paper we present Kino, a set of tools that streamline the document management process in life science domains. Kino is integrated with National Center for Biomedical Ontology (NCBO), providing scientists access to quality domain models. Annotated documents are indexed using a faceted …
Child Support As Labor Regulation, Yiyoon Chung
Child Support As Labor Regulation, Yiyoon Chung
The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare
The development of child support policy over the past three decades provides an emblematic case study of the ways in which a new policy that reflects the rise of moral arguments about individual and family responsibility, once established, produces significant consequences for both the economic sphere and political dialogues. I use social control theory to examine a rarely appreciated consequence of child support policies: labor regulation. Particularly, I demonstrate the ways in which the discourse embedded in child support has exalted the importance of work even under the lowest terms, and has deflected public attention away from labor market issues.

Escape from specialist natural enemies is frequently invoked to explain exotic plant invasions, but little attention has been paid to how generalist consumers in the recipient range may influence invasion. We examined how seed preferences of the widespread generalist granivore Peromyscus maniculatus related to recruitment of the strongly invasive exotic Centaurea stoebe and several weakly invasive exotics and natives by conducting laboratory feeding trials and seed addition experiments in the field. Laboratory feeding trials showed that P. maniculatus avoided consuming seeds of C. stoebe relative to the 12 other species tested, even when seeds of alternative species were 53–94% smaller …
Nonbelievers, Nelson Tebbe
Nonbelievers, Nelson Tebbe

How should courts handle nonbelievers who bring religious freedom claims? Although this question is easy to grasp, it presents a genuine puzzle because the religion clauses of the Constitution, along with many contemporary statutes, protect only religion by their terms. From time to time, judges and lawyers have therefore struggled with the place of nonbelievers in the American scheme of religious freedom. Today, this problem is gaining prominence because of nonbelievers’ rising visibility. New lines of social conflict are forming around them, generating disputes that have already gone legal. In this Article, I argue that no wholesale response will do. …

Ticks are important vectors of numerous human diseases and animal diseases. Feeding stimulates spermatogenesis, mating and insemination of male factors that trigger female reproduction. The physiology of male reproduction and its regulation of female development are essentially a black box. Several transcriptomes have catalogued expression of tick genes in the salivary glands, synganglion and midgut but no comprehensive investigation has addressed male reproduction and mating. Consequently, a new global approach using transcriptomics, proteomics, and quantitative gene expression is needed to understand male reproduction and stimulation of female reproduction. This first transcriptome to the reproductive biology of fed male ticks, Dermacentor variabilis …
Targeting Breast Cancer Detection With Communications Technology, Hacer Varol
Targeting Breast Cancer Detection With Communications Technology, Hacer Varol
Theses and Dissertations
Breast cancer continues to be a significant public health problem in the United States: It is the second leading cause of female mortality, and, disturbingly, one out of eight women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her life time. Until the cause of this disease is fully understood, early detection remains the only hope to improve prognosis and treatment. In this thesis, the tumor detection problem in breast images is formulated as a hypothesis testing problem, where the signal of interest is the tumor and the noise refers to the healthy tissue in the breast. …

The frequent interactions of rodents with humans make them a common source of zoonotic infections. To obtain an initial unbiased measure of the viral diversity in the enteric tract of wild rodents we sequenced partially purified, randomly amplified viral RNA and DNA in the feces of 105 wild rodents (mouse, vole, and rat) collected in California and Virginia. We identified in decreasing frequency sequences related to the mammalian viruses families Circoviridae, Picobirnaviridae, Picornaviridae, Astroviridae, Parvoviridae, Papillomaviridae, Adenoviridae, and Coronaviridae. Seventeen small circular DNA genomes containing one or two replicase genes distantly related to the Circoviridae representing several potentially …

Auditory Selectivity For Acoustic Features That Confer Species Recognition In The Túngara Frog, Lisa A. Mangiamele, Sabrina S. Burmeister
Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications
In anurans, recognition of species-specific acoustic signals is essential to finding a mate. In many species, behavioral tests have elucidated which acoustic features contribute to species recognition, but the mechanisms by which the brain encodes these species-specific signal components are less well understood. The túngara frog produces a 'whine' mating call that is characterized by a descending frequency sweep. However, much of the signal is unnecessary for recognition, as recognition behavior can be triggered by a descending two-tone step that mimics the frequency change in a portion of the whine. To identify the brain regions that contribute to species recognition …

Development Of Novel Microsatellite Markers For High-Resolution Genetic Analysis Of The Western Slimy Salamander (Plethodon Albagula), Nathan Thomas Stephens
Student Theses and Dissertations
Polymorphic microsatellite DNA markers were developed and characterized for the western slimy salamander (Plethodon albagula). Salamanders from the Spillway Mine in Garland County, Arkansas were sampled for DNA and a microsatellite-enriched library was created for this species. The library yielded 1654 sequences from which 142 candidate loci containing simple tandem repeats were identified; 28 polymerase chain reaction primer pairs representing 28 candidate loci were tested in this study and eight were selected for development based on robust amplification and polymorphism in PCR-based analysis of P. albagula population samples. Of these eight loci, six were determined to be unlinked in a …
