Predicting Flavonoid Ugt Regioselectivity, Rhydon Jackson, Debra Knisley, Cecilia Mcintosh, Phillip Pfeiffer Sep 2011

Predicting Flavonoid Ugt Regioselectivity, Rhydon Jackson, Debra Knisley, Cecilia Mcintosh, Phillip Pfeiffer

ETSU Faculty Works

Machine learning was applied to a challenging and biologically significant protein classification problem: the prediction of avonoid UGT acceptor regioselectivity from primary sequence. Novel indices characterizing graphical models of residues were proposed and found to be widely distributed among existing amino acid indices and to cluster residues appropriately. UGT subsequences biochemically linked to regioselectivity were modeled as sets of index sequences. Several learning techniques incorporating these UGT models were compared with classifications based on standard sequence alignment scores. These techniques included an application of time series distance functions to protein classification. Time series distances defined on the index sequences were …

Protective Effect Of Liposome-Encapsulated Glutathione In A Human Epidermal Model Exposed To A Mustard Gas Analog, Victor Paromov, Sudha Kumari, Marianne Brannon, Naga S. Kanaparthy, Hongsong Yang, Milton G. Smith, William L. Stone Sep 2011

Protective Effect Of Liposome-Encapsulated Glutathione In A Human Epidermal Model Exposed To A Mustard Gas Analog, Victor Paromov, Sudha Kumari, Marianne Brannon, Naga S. Kanaparthy, Hongsong Yang, Milton G. Smith, William L. Stone

ETSU Faculty Works

Sulfur mustard or mustard gas (HD) and its monofunctional analog, 2-chloroethyl ethyl sulfide (CEES), or "half-mustard gas", are alkylating agents that induce DNA damage, oxidative stress, and inflammation. HD/CEES are rapidly absorbed in the skin causing extensive injury. We hypothesize that antioxidant liposomes that deliver both water-soluble and lipid-soluble antioxidants protect skin cells from immediate CEES-induced damage via attenuating oxidative stress. Liposomes containing water-soluble antioxidants and/or lipid-soluble antioxidants were evaluated using in vitro model systems. Initially, we found that liposomes containing encapsulated glutathione (GSH-liposomes) increased cell viability and attenuated production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in HaCaT cells exposed to …

Characterization Of Hpk2-Rrp2, Two-Component Regulatory System In Treponema Denticola, Sarkar Juni Sep 2011

Characterization Of Hpk2-Rrp2, Two-Component Regulatory System In Treponema Denticola, Sarkar Juni

Theses and Dissertations

Treponema denticola levels in the gingival crevice become elevated as periodontal disease develops. Oral treponemes may account for as much as 40% of the total bacterial population in the periodontal pocket. The stimuli that trigger enhanced growth of T. denticola and the mechanisms associated with the transmission of these signals remain to be defined. A hypothesis was set that the T. denticola ORFs tde1970 (histidine kinase) and tde1969 (response regulator) constitute a functional two component regulatory system that regulates, at least in part, responses to the changing environmental conditions associated with the development of periodontal disease. The results presented demonstrate …

Identity And Psychological Needs Among National Guard Service Members And Undergraduates, Bradley Antonides Sep 2011

Identity And Psychological Needs Among National Guard Service Members And Undergraduates, Bradley Antonides

Theses and Dissertations

This study measured identity style and identity status within military and academic populations (N = 286) to investigate whether low levels of identity commitment predict dissatisfaction in meeting basic psychological needs. Analysis of identity style and identity status subscales examined the reliability of traditional measures of identity in an atypical emerging adult population. Group comparisons based on participant characteristics (identity commitment, work experience, age, combat experience) explored differences between and within institutions. Results supported the reliability of traditional identity measures in a non-traditional population. A diffuse identity status and diffuse identity style both significantly predicted lower reported levels of psychological …

L’Échec Implantaire : Revue De La Littérature, Hiam Wehbé, Nada Bou-Abboud Naaman Sep 2011

L’Échec Implantaire : Revue De La Littérature, Hiam Wehbé, Nada Bou-Abboud Naaman

International Arab Journal of Dentistry

Since the 1960s, the introduction of osseointegration principles and improved surgical protocols has resulted in an increasing use of oral implants in clinical practice. Despite their high long-term success rates in the rehabilitation of fully or partially edentulous patients, dental implants failures might occur. The implant failure can be classified as early failure (the osseointegration is not yet established) and late failure (involving a breakdown of the established osseointegration). The aim of this article was to present a literature review regarding mechanism, etiologies and risk factors associated with implant failures.

Periodontitis As A Risk Factor For Preterm Low-Birth Weight Babies: A Litterature Review, Shaju Jacob Sep 2011

Periodontitis As A Risk Factor For Preterm Low-Birth Weight Babies: A Litterature Review, Shaju Jacob

International Arab Journal of Dentistry

Periodontitis is reported to be associated with preterm low-birth weight (PLBW) and is claimed to be one of its risk factors. This literature review examines evidence supporting the role of periodontitis in the occurrence of PLBW. PubMed, medIND and WHO indices were searched for published studies, (cross-sectional, case-control, longitudinal, experimental) using the key words: pregnancy, periodontitis. There is enough evidence to implicate periodontitis as a risk factor for preterm low-birth weight even though recent studies haven’t shown a significant relation. New researches with population-specific definitions of PLBW and periodontal diseases must be done for a better assessment of the relation …

Ecology And Genetic Structure Of A Northern Temperate Vibrio Cholerae Population Related To Toxigenic Isolates, Brian M. Schuster, Anna L. Tyzik, Rachel A. Donner, Megan J. Striplin, Salvador Almagro-Moreno Sep 2011

Ecology And Genetic Structure Of A Northern Temperate Vibrio Cholerae Population Related To Toxigenic Isolates, Brian M. Schuster, Anna L. Tyzik, Rachel A. Donner, Megan J. Striplin, Salvador Almagro-Moreno

Dartmouth Scholarship

Although Vibrio cholerae is an important human pathogen, little is known about its populations in regions where the organism is endemic but where cholera disease is rare. A total of 31 independent isolates confirmed as V. cholerae were collected from water, sediment, and oysters in 2008 and 2009 from the Great Bay Estuary (GBE) in New Hampshire, a location where the organism has never been detected. Environmental analyses suggested that abundance correlates most strongly with rainfall events, as determined from data averaged over several days prior to collection. Phenotyping, genotyping, and multilocus sequence analysis (MLSA) revealed a highly diverse endemic …

Cucurbit[8]Uril Rotaxanes, Vijayakumar Ramalingam, Adam R. Urbach Sep 2011

Cucurbit[8]Uril Rotaxanes, Vijayakumar Ramalingam, Adam R. Urbach

Chemistry Faculty Research

The synthesis of [2]rotaxanes, each comprising a viologen core threaded through a cucurbit[8]uril (Q8, Figure 1) macrocycle and stoppered by tetraphenylmethane groups, and their binding to second guests as inclusion complexes in organic and aqueous media are described. Stoppering was observed to have little effect on binding. Chemical modification of the threaded guest was used to control solubility and binding characteristics, thus demonstrating a novel approach to making artificial receptors with readily modifiable properties.

Design Of Control Release Drug Delivery System (Dds) For Imaging And Therapeutic Applications, Sweta Naik Sep 2011

Design Of Control Release Drug Delivery System (Dds) For Imaging And Therapeutic Applications, Sweta Naik

Theses and Dissertations

The main challenge in disease treatment is no more the discovery of new therapeutic drugs, but to provide targeted delivery of therapeutic drugs to specific sites without incurring systemic toxicity effects. An efficient way of reducing the toxicity is by encapsulating the drug with a biodegradable matrix that can provide controlled release of the drug along with local heating of the drug. Local heating can be obtained by incorporating magnetic iron oxide particles that heat upon exposure to AC electromagnetic fields. The magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles are also gaining much attention as MRI contrast agents. Thus it would be of …

Body-Snatching: Medicine And The Cartesian Threat, Mark D. Sullivan, Md, Phd Sep 2011

Body-Snatching: Medicine And The Cartesian Threat, Mark D. Sullivan, Md, Phd

Jefferson Journal of Psychiatry

Twentieth century physicians are proud to be biological scientists. It is this feature above all others that distinguishes us from our predecessors. Because it is the badge of our progress in medicine, biology is often considered the essential core of medical care. Indeed, we can become so focused upon the biology inmedicine that all other aspects of caring for patients fade into a murky background of ill-defined sentimentality.

Different Perspectives Of Psychiatry Within Two Neighboring Residency Training Programs, Bruce Rosenblum, Md Sep 2011

Different Perspectives Of Psychiatry Within Two Neighboring Residency Training Programs, Bruce Rosenblum, Md

Jefferson Journal of Psychiatry

This paper arises out of my fortunate opportunity to observe two very different psychiatric residency training programs. While a fourth-year resident at a large, psycho dynamically-oriented private psychiatric hospital, I was able to do a consultation liaison rotation at a neighboring academic institution at the vanguard of biological psychiatry. I left the familiar, we ll-manicured suburban grounds for the inner city of Baltimore to be one of the first experiments in "cross-fertilization" between these residency training programs. Although the two institutions are located in the same city and stem from the early history of American psychiatry, they have been worlds …

Treatment Of Mental Disorders In Pregnancy: A Review Of Neuroleptics, Antidepressants, And Lithium Carbonate, Lawrence L. Kerns, Md Sep 2011

Treatment Of Mental Disorders In Pregnancy: A Review Of Neuroleptics, Antidepressants, And Lithium Carbonate, Lawrence L. Kerns, Md

Jefferson Journal of Psychiatry

Pregnancy is frequently complicated by the development or recurrence of a serious mental disorder; neurotic, major affective, and psychotic illnesses have all been observed (1-4). When a major mental disorder arises in a pregnant woman and threatens the health or life of the patient and/or fetus, it should be treated early and aggressively to minimize complications and forestall the advance of the disease. Nonbiologic methods like individual psychotherapy, couples or family therapy, social casework, and hospitalization in a supportive, structured milieu should form the first line of treatment. Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) may be the treatment of choice for some patients, …

Masochistic Personality Disorder: A Diagnosis Under Consideration, A. Kenneth Fuller, Md Sep 2011

Masochistic Personality Disorder: A Diagnosis Under Consideration, A. Kenneth Fuller, Md

Jefferson Journal of Psychiatry

In the past three decades, few diagnoses in psychiatry have had a more turbulent history than the personality disorders (1). Labels such as inadequate, emotionally unstable, and asthenic personalities entered the official nomenclature and were later withdrawn. Borderline, antisocial and compulsive personality disorders are additions that have become entrenched in the classification of mental disorders. The turmoil maintains its course with a diagnosis of Masochistic Personality Disorder under consideration to join the existing categories of personality disorders in the revised edition of DSM-III (DSM-III-R) (2).

The category of Masochistic Personality Disorder does not exist in the three earlier versions of …

Faculty Advisor's Column, Harvey J. Schwartz, Md Sep 2011

Faculty Advisor's Column, Harvey J. Schwartz, Md

Jefferson Journal of Psychiatry

The challenge of understanding and treating the increasing number of patients who suffer from some form of eating disorder has been addressed at length in the past issues of the JeJferson Journal. Beginning in the July 1985 issue, Dr. Eric Levin presented a clinical and theoretical report entitled "Bulimia as a Masturbatory Equivalent." The last issue contained an "In Response" column by Dr. C. Philip Wilson, a foremost authority on the psychoanalytic approach to this problem. This issue brings forth further commentary by Dr. Jeffrey Jonas, a recognized leader in the pharmacologic concept of treatment. The differences in approach are …

Publications and Research

Fluorescence correlation spectroscopy and fluorescence recovery after photobleaching measurements on macrophages injected with fluorescent phosphatidylinositol 4,5-bisphosphate (PIP2) suggest that a barrier impedes the diffusion of plasma membrane PIP2 into and out of forming phagosomes.

A Novel Malware Target Recognition Architecture For Enhanced Cyberspace Situation Awareness, Thomas E. Dube Sep 2011

A Novel Malware Target Recognition Architecture For Enhanced Cyberspace Situation Awareness, Thomas E. Dube

Theses and Dissertations

The rapid transition of critical business processes to computer networks potentially exposes organizations to digital theft or corruption by advanced competitors. One tool used for these tasks is malware, because it circumvents legitimate authentication mechanisms. Malware is an epidemic problem for organizations of all types. This research proposes and evaluates a novel Malware Target Recognition (MaTR) architecture for malware detection and identification of propagation methods and payloads to enhance situation awareness in tactical scenarios using non-instruction-based, static heuristic features. MaTR achieves a 99.92% detection accuracy on known malware with false positive and false negative rates of 8.73e-4 and 8.03e-4 respectively. …

Identification And Classification Of Player Types In Massive Multiplayer Online Games Using Avatar Behavior, Earl M. Bednar Sep 2011

Identification And Classification Of Player Types In Massive Multiplayer Online Games Using Avatar Behavior, Earl M. Bednar

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of our research is to develop an improved methodology for classifying players (identifying deviant players such as terrorists) through multivariate analysis of data from avatar characteristics and behaviors in massive multiplayer online games (MMOGs). To build our classification models, we developed three significant enhancements to the standard Generalized Regression Neural Networks (GRNN) modeling method. The first enhancement is a feature selection technique based on GRNNs, allowing us to tailor our feature set to be best modeled by GRNNs. The second enhancement is a hybrid GRNN which allows each feature to be modeled by a GRNN tailored to its …

Highly Efficient Extraction Of Phenolic Compounds By Use Of Magnetic Room Temperature Ionic Liquids For Environmental Remediation, Ning Deng, Min Li, Lijie Zhao, Chengfei Lu, Sergio L. De Rooy, Isiah M. Warner Sep 2011

Highly Efficient Extraction Of Phenolic Compounds By Use Of Magnetic Room Temperature Ionic Liquids For Environmental Remediation, Ning Deng, Min Li, Lijie Zhao, Chengfei Lu, Sergio L. De Rooy, Isiah M. Warner

Faculty Publications

A hydrophobic magnetic room temperature ionic liquid (MRTIL), trihexyltetradecylphosphonium tetrachloroferrate(III) ([3C 6PC 14][FeCl 4]), was synthesized from trihexyltetradecylphosphonium chloride and FeCl 3·6H 2O. This MRTIL was investigated as a possible separation agent for solvent extraction of phenolic compounds from aqueous solution. Due to its strong paramagnetism, [3C 6PC 14][FeCl 4] responds to an external neodymium magnet, which was employed in the design of a novel magnetic extraction technique. The conditions for extraction, including extraction time, volume ratio between MRTIL and aqueous phase, pH of aqueous solution, and structures of phenolic compounds were investigated and optimized. The magnetic extraction of phenols …

A Proof Of Bell's Inequality In Quantum Mechanics Using Causal Interactions, James M. Robins, Tyler J. Vanderweele, Richard D. Gill Sep 2011

A Proof Of Bell's Inequality In Quantum Mechanics Using Causal Interactions, James M. Robins, Tyler J. Vanderweele, Richard D. Gill

COBRA Preprint Series

We give a simple proof of Bell's inequality in quantum mechanics which, in conjunction with experiments, demonstrates that the local hidden variables assumption is false. The proof sheds light on relationships between the notion of causal interaction and interference between particles.
