Reflections On The Psychotherapy Of A Patient With Multiple Personality Disorder, David Fink, Md Sep 2011

Reflections On The Psychotherapy Of A Patient With Multiple Personality Disorder, David Fink, Md

Jefferson Journal of Psychiatry

Historically, the diagnosis of Multiple Personality Disorder (MPD) has generated curiosity, fascination, skepticism, and disbelief. From the first reported cases in the early nineteenth century, controversy has abounded about the plausibility of the many dramatic manifestations of the illness, its pathogenesis, and appropriate approaches to its treatment (I). From the midst of scientific controversy and debate, a more refined conceptualization of the illness is being developed, particularly since the recent inclusion of the diagnosis in DSM-III (2). Noteworthy among these advances are the theories of pathogenesis described by Kluft (3), and Braun and Sachs (4) which …

Infant Depression: Nature Seeking Nurture, Paul V. Trad, Md Sep 2011

Infant Depression: Nature Seeking Nurture, Paul V. Trad, Md

Jefferson Journal of Psychiatry

Of the numerous clinical and theoretical problems confronting medicine today, infant depression represents an increasingly compelling and misunderstood concern (1). Early studies notwithstanding, the concept of infant depression remains in the embryonic and evolving stages of clarification. In studying infant depression, the clinical investigator is initially faced with the difficulty of devising a specific operational definition. Several definitional schemes have been proposed. The first advocates that depression is a proliferative idea that retains a concrete, immutable definition; another scheme argues that depressive affect, a key index of the disorder, is merely an illusory signal that masks the underlying process; still …

In Response: The Biological Basis And Treatment Of Bulimia, Jeffrey M. Jonas, Md Sep 2011

In Response: The Biological Basis And Treatment Of Bulimia, Jeffrey M. Jonas, Md

Jefferson Journal of Psychiatry

The recent papers in the Jefferson J ournal of Psychiatry by Drs. Levin ("Bulimia as a Masturbatory Equivalent, " July, 1985) and Wilson ("A Discussion of 'Bulimia as a Masturbatory Equivalent'," Winter, 1986) contain a number of theories and recommendations about the etiology and treatment of bulimia which should be addressed. In large measure, both papers present a dynamic view of this disorder. However, psychodynamic formulations are but one of many theories put forward to explain this disorder. Other theories of etiology include notions that bulimia arises from cultural factors and an increased attention to body image, from disorders with …

Reconsidering Antitrust's Goals, Maurice E. Stucke Sep 2011

Reconsidering Antitrust's Goals, Maurice E. Stucke

College of Law Faculty Scholarship

Antitrust policy today is an anomaly. On the one hand, antitrust is thriving internationally. On the other hand, antitrust’s influence has diminished domestically. Over the past thirty years, there have been fewer antitrust investigations and private actions. Today the Supreme Court complains about antitrust suits, and places greater faith in the antitrust function being subsumed in a regulatory framework. So what happened to the antitrust movement in the United States?

Two import factors contributed to antitrust policy’s domestic decline. The first is salience, especially the salience of the U.S. antitrust goals. In the past thirty years, enforcers and courts abandoned …

Teaching Values, Teaching Stereotypes: Sex Ed And Indoctrination In Public Schools, Jennifer S. Hendricks Sep 2011

Teaching Values, Teaching Stereotypes: Sex Ed And Indoctrination In Public Schools, Jennifer S. Hendricks

College of Law Faculty Scholarship

Many sex education curricula currently used in public schools indoctrinate students in gender stereotypes. As expressed in the title of one article: “If You Don’t Aim to Please, Don’t Dress to Tease,” and Other Public School Sex Education Lessons Subsidized by You, the Federal Taxpayer (Jennifer L. Greenblatt, 14 TEX. J. ON C.L. & C.R. 1 (2008)). Other lessons pertain not only to responsibility for sexual activity but to lifelong approaches to family life and individual achievement. One lesson, for example, instructs students that, in marriage, men need sex from their wives and women need financial support from their husbands. …

Of Woman Born? Technology, Relationship, And The Right To A Human Mother, Jennifer S. Hendricks Sep 2011

Of Woman Born? Technology, Relationship, And The Right To A Human Mother, Jennifer S. Hendricks

College of Law Faculty Scholarship

This article explores the legal implications of a scientific fantasy: the fantasy of building artificial wombs that could gestate a human child from conception. It takes as its touchstone a claim by sociologist Barbara Katz Rothman, who writes, “Every human child has a right to a human mother.”

While the article discusses the legal principles that would apply to artificial wombs, it is skeptical about the technological possibility of artificial wombs in the foreseeable future. Accordingly, the focus of the article is the effect that the fantasy of artificial gestation has on the legal discourse around pregnancy and reproduction today. …

The Mechanism Of Neuroprotection Mediated By Nicotinamide Mononucleotide Adenylyl Transferase (Nmnat), Yousuf O. Ali Sep 2011

The Mechanism Of Neuroprotection Mediated By Nicotinamide Mononucleotide Adenylyl Transferase (Nmnat), Yousuf O. Ali

Open Access Dissertations

Neurons need to be maintained to persist throughout adulthood for proper brain function. However neuronal activity, injury and aging exert physical stress on the nervous system, which compromise nervous system function. Healthy neurons are able to maintain their integrity throughout the lifespan of the animal, suggesting the existence of a maintenance mechanism that allows neurons to sustain or even repair damage. A forward genetic screening in Drosophila identified mutations in a gene called nmnat that cause a rapid and severe neurodegeneration immediately post neuronal differentiation and development. NMNAT protein was required to maintain neuronal integrity in an activity-dependent manner. When …

Strategic Substitutes Or Complements? The Game Of Where To Fish, Robert L. Hicks, William C. Horrace, Kurt E. Schnier Sep 2011

Strategic Substitutes Or Complements? The Game Of Where To Fish, Robert L. Hicks, William C. Horrace, Kurt E. Schnier

Economics - All Scholarship

The ‘‘global game with strategic substitutes and complements’’ of Karp et al. (2007) is used to model the decision of where to fish. A complete information game is assumed, but the model is generalized to S > 1 sites. In this game, a fisherman’s payoff depends on fish density in each site and the actions of other fishermen which can lead to congestion or agglomeration effects. Stable and unstable equilibria are characterized, as well as notions of equilibrium dominance. The model is applied to the Alaskan flatfish fishery by specifying a strategic interaction function (response to congestion) that is a non-linear …

A Hybrid Bayesian Laplacian Approach For Generalized Linear Mixed Models, Marinela Capanu, Mithat Gonen, Colin B. Begg Sep 2011

A Hybrid Bayesian Laplacian Approach For Generalized Linear Mixed Models, Marinela Capanu, Mithat Gonen, Colin B. Begg

Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, Dept. of Epidemiology & Biostatistics Working Paper Series

The analytical intractability of generalized linear mixed models (GLMMs) has generated a lot of research in the past two decades. Applied statisticians routinely face the frustrating prospect of widely disparate results produced by the methods that are currently implemented in commercially available software. This article is motivated by this frustration and develops guidance as well as new methods that are computationally efficient and statistically reliable. Two main classes of approximations have been developed: likelihood-based methods and Bayesian methods. Likelihood-based methods such as the penalized quasi-likelihood approach of Breslow and Clayton (1993) have been shown to produce biased estimates especially for …

Ontogeny Of The Alligator Cartilago Transiliens And Its Significance For Sauropsid Jaw Muscle Evolution, Henry P. Tsai, Casey M. Holliday Sep 2011

Ontogeny Of The Alligator Cartilago Transiliens And Its Significance For Sauropsid Jaw Muscle Evolution, Henry P. Tsai, Casey M. Holliday

College of Health and Human Services

The cartilago transiliens is a fibrocartilaginous structure within the jaw muscles of crocodylians. The cartilago transiliens slides between the pterygoid buttress and coronoid region of the lower jaw and connects two muscles historically identified as m. pseudotemporalis superficialis and m. intramandibularis. However, the position of cartilago transiliens, and its anatomical similarities to tendon organs suggest the structure may be a sesamoid linking a single muscle. Incompressible sesamoids often form inside tendons that wrap around bone. However, such structures rarely ossify in reptiles and have thus far received scant attention. We tested the hypothesis that the cartilago transiliens is a sesamoid …

Accurate Estimation Of Isoform And Gene Expression Levels From Next Generation Sequencing Data, Marius Nicolae Sep 2011

Accurate Estimation Of Isoform And Gene Expression Levels From Next Generation Sequencing Data, Marius Nicolae

Master's Theses

Massively parallel transcriptome sequencing is quickly replacing microarrays as the technology of choice for performing gene expression profiling due to its wider dynamic range and digital quantitation capabilities. However, accurate estimation of expression levels from sequencing data remains challenging due to the short read length delivered by current sequencing technologies and still poorly understood protocol- and technology-specific biases.

To date, two main transcriptome sequencing protocols have been proposed in the literature. The most commonly used one, referred to as RNA-Seq, generates short (single or paired) sequencing tags from the ends of randomly generated cDNA fragments. An alternative protocol, referred to …

Characterization, Modeling, And Simulation Of Multiscale Directed-Assembly Systems, Ryan Molecke

Nanoscience and Microsystems ETDs

Nanoscience is a rapidly developing field at the nexus of all physical sciences which holds the potential for mankind to gain a new level of control of matter over matter and energy altogether. Directed-assembly is an emerging field within nanoscience in which non-equilibrium system dynamics are controlled to produce scalable, arbitrarily complex and interconnected multi-layered structures with custom chemical, biologically or environmentally-responsive, electronic, or optical properties. We construct mathematical models and interpret data from direct-assembly experiments via application and augmentation of classical and contemporary physics, biology, and chemistry methods. Crystal growth, protein pathway mapping, LASER tweezers optical trapping, and colloid …

Predicting Flavonoid Ugt Regioselectivity, Rhydon Jackson, Debra Knisley, Cecilia Mcintosh, Phillip Pfeiffer Sep 2011

Predicting Flavonoid Ugt Regioselectivity, Rhydon Jackson, Debra Knisley, Cecilia Mcintosh, Phillip Pfeiffer

ETSU Faculty Works

Machine learning was applied to a challenging and biologically significant protein classification problem: the prediction of avonoid UGT acceptor regioselectivity from primary sequence. Novel indices characterizing graphical models of residues were proposed and found to be widely distributed among existing amino acid indices and to cluster residues appropriately. UGT subsequences biochemically linked to regioselectivity were modeled as sets of index sequences. Several learning techniques incorporating these UGT models were compared with classifications based on standard sequence alignment scores. These techniques included an application of time series distance functions to protein classification. Time series distances defined on the index sequences were …

Protective Effect Of Liposome-Encapsulated Glutathione In A Human Epidermal Model Exposed To A Mustard Gas Analog, Victor Paromov, Sudha Kumari, Marianne Brannon, Naga S. Kanaparthy, Hongsong Yang, Milton G. Smith, William L. Stone

ETSU Faculty Works

Sulfur mustard or mustard gas (HD) and its monofunctional analog, 2-chloroethyl ethyl sulfide (CEES), or "half-mustard gas", are alkylating agents that induce DNA damage, oxidative stress, and inflammation. HD/CEES are rapidly absorbed in the skin causing extensive injury. We hypothesize that antioxidant liposomes that deliver both water-soluble and lipid-soluble antioxidants protect skin cells from immediate CEES-induced damage via attenuating oxidative stress. Liposomes containing water-soluble antioxidants and/or lipid-soluble antioxidants were evaluated using in vitro model systems. Initially, we found that liposomes containing encapsulated glutathione (GSH-liposomes) increased cell viability and attenuated production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in HaCaT cells exposed to …
