Religion And Culture, Adam B. Cohen
Religion And Culture, Adam B. Cohen
Online Readings in Psychology and Culture
This is an article about culture and religion. First, I discuss how social psychologists usually teach culture in their Social Psychology classes, focusing on east-west differences in individualism and collectivism. Then I propose that religious groups are cultures, because they have all of the defining features of cultures (such as beliefs and values). I then describe some studies I have done on moral judgment differences across religious cultures. If a married man thinks about having an affair, Christians consider this adultery, and Jews do not. Through mediation analyses and multiple experiments, I show this is because of differences between Jewish …

Evaluation Of Second And Fourth Year Undergraduate Medical Students' Perception And Acceptance Of The Problem-Based Learning Process., Sarah K. Hagi, Lana A. Al-Shawwa
Saudi Medical Journal
OBJECTIVES: To investigate medical students9 perception of problem based learning (PBL), to compare the acceptance level of new students who were introduced to PBL theoretically with those who had 2 years experience, and to study the effect of PBL on the academic performance. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted on medical students at King Abdul-Aziz University (KAU), Jeddah, Saudi Arabia between November 2008 and May 2009. A self-administered structured questionnaire was used to collect data from 2 groups of undergraduate medical students who volunteered to participate. Student t-test was used for comparison between the groups. RESULTS: Out of the 450 …

Disgust Sensitivity And The Neurophysiology Of Left-Right Political Orientations, Kevin B. Smith, Douglas R. Oxley, Matthew V. Hibbing, John R. Alford, John R. Hibbing
Department of Political Science: Faculty Publications
Disgust has been described as the most primitive and central of emotions. Thus, it is not surprising that it shapes behaviors in a variety of organisms and in a variety of contexts—including homo sapien politics. People who believe they would be bothered by a range of hypothetical disgusting situations display an increased likelihood of displaying right-of-center rather than left-of-center political orientations. Given its primal nature and essential value in avoiding pathogens disgust likely has an effect even without registering in conscious beliefs. In this article, we demonstrate that individuals with marked involuntary physiological responses to disgusting images, such as of …

Population Structure, Long-Term Connectivity, And Effective Size Of Mutton Snapper (Lutjanus Analis) In The Caribbean Sea And Florida Keys, Evan W. Carson, Eric A. Saillant, Mark A. Renshaw, Nancie J. Cummings, John R. Gold
Faculty Publications
Genetic structure and average long-term connectivity and effective size of mutton snapper (Lutjanus analis) sampled from offshore localities in the U.S. Caribbean and the Florida Keys were assessed by using nuclear-encoded microsatellites and a fragment of mitochondrial DNA. No significant differences in allele, genotype (microsatellites), or haplotype (mtDNA) distributions were detected; tests of selective neutrality (mtDNA) were nonsignificant after Bonferroni correction. Heuristic estimates of average long-term rate of migration (proportion of migrant individuals/generation) between geographically adjacent localities varied from 0.0033 to 0.0054, indicating that local subpopulations could respond independently of environmental perturbations. Estimates of average long-term effective population sizes varied …

Stress-Generation Processes In Latinos: The Roles Of Acculturation, Acculturative Stress, And Intercultural Competence, Mark W. Driscoll
Stress-Generation Processes In Latinos: The Roles Of Acculturation, Acculturative Stress, And Intercultural Competence, Mark W. Driscoll
Dissertations (1934 -)
Using a brief longitudinal design, this study examined the role of cultural adaptation processes (acculturation, acculturative stress, and intercultural competence) in predicting depression symptoms among Latinos living in the United States. Based on previous research employing stress generation processes (e.g., Hammen, 2005), it was hypothesized that depression symptoms measured at baseline predicted dependent stressful life events measured at six-month follow-up. It was further hypothesized that depression symptoms measured at baseline predicted dependent stressful life events measured at six-month follow-up indirectly through acculturation, acculturative stress, and intercultural competence, also measured at six-month follow-up. Finally, it was hypothesized that six-month follow-up acculturation, …
The Therapeutic Relationship In Dialectical Behavior Therapy: A Longitudinal Investigation In A Naturalistic Setting, Sara Elizabeth Little
The Therapeutic Relationship In Dialectical Behavior Therapy: A Longitudinal Investigation In A Naturalistic Setting, Sara Elizabeth Little
Dissertations (1934 -)
The quality of the therapeutic alliance in psychotherapy has been found to be positively associated with many treatment outcome variables, such as client retention, client satisfaction in treatment, and improvement in symptoms. While some theorists assume that therapeutic alliance is established early in therapy and remains fairly stable across time in treatment, others such as Safran et al. (1990) suggest that the alliance quality fluctuates across time and is likely to be marked by frequent patterns of rupture and repair. In particular, individuals with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) have clusters of symptoms and interpersonal styles that are likely to present …
Influences On Father Involvement: Testing For Unique Contributions Of Religion And Spirituality, Mark Lynn
Influences On Father Involvement: Testing For Unique Contributions Of Religion And Spirituality, Mark Lynn
Dissertations (1934 -)
The role of the father in children's development historically has been neglected. Studies examining family processes were primarily limited to mothers, under the assumption that mothers' influences encapsulated what (little) effects could also be attributed to the father. Although theory and research have begun to address fathers' roles in families in earnest, there is still much work to be done, particularly in regard to understanding the determinants of father involvement. One direction that has received attention from researchers is towards a conceptualization of environmental and contextual influences on fathers' interactions with their families. The goal of this study was to …
Muscle Fatigue And Motor Output Variability With Acute Stress In Healthy Young Adults And Veterans With Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, Manda Linea Keller
Muscle Fatigue And Motor Output Variability With Acute Stress In Healthy Young Adults And Veterans With Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, Manda Linea Keller
Dissertations (1934 -)
Acute stress can alter motor performance differently for men and women. The first aim of this dissertation addresses possible causes for the sex difference in the motor response of a low-intensity fatiguing contraction of the elbow flexor muscles to an acute stressor (difficult mental math) in young, healthy adults. Muscle fatigue increased for men and women when exposed to the stressor, but impairment was more prominent for the women. This work showed that fatigue in the central nervous system, specifically in cortical motor and premotor areas, as well as relaxation rates of the muscle (quantified with cortical stimulation) were not …
Fluorescence Probes For Cellular Thiol And Disulfide Detection: Sythesis And Biophysical Characterization, Timothy Jonhera
Fluorescence Probes For Cellular Thiol And Disulfide Detection: Sythesis And Biophysical Characterization, Timothy Jonhera
Dissertations (1934 -)
The total concentration of cellular thiols is about 30 mM, and use of current fluorescent chemical probes to quantitate these thiols inside cells is impractical. We recently reported fluorescent dithio probes (donor-S-S-acceptor, DSSA) with unusually low reduction potential (- 0.6 V) that can detect changes in intracellular thiols and cross membranes of bacterial and mammalian cells, but they could not quantify thiol redox state. Here we report a new variant of the DSSA series, which has hydroxy coumarin (Ex: 320 nm, Em: 460 nm) as donor and fluorescein (Ex: 485 nm, Em: 520 nm) as acceptor. The probe was characterized …
The Discovery And Exploration Of A Universal Targeting Mechanism In Eukaryotic Cells, Priyanka Sivadas
The Discovery And Exploration Of A Universal Targeting Mechanism In Eukaryotic Cells, Priyanka Sivadas
Dissertations (1934 -)
A wide range of eukaryotic organisms generate motile cilia and flagella. These slender organelles beat rhythmically to move the surrounding fluid or to propel cells in aqueous environment. Organisms use these powerful yet nimble organelles to forage, evade, adapt and mate. The machinery that drives this tightly controlled movement is the sophisticated microtubule-based axoneme. As it is critical for the survival of individual species, this machinery has largely been preserved to the molecular level throughout evolution. Proteomic studies have shown that most proteins in this biological machine consist of molecular modules commonly used in the cell body. But the usage …

Formulation Of Buprenorphine For Sublingual Use In Neonates., Ellena A Anagnostis, Rania E Sadaka, Linda A Sailor, David E Moody, Kevin C Dysart, Walter K. Kraft
Department of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics Faculty Papers
OBJECTIVES: The only medication used sublingually in the neonate is buprenorphine for the treatment of neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS). Compared with morphine, buprenorphine reduces the length of treatment and length of hospitalization in neonates treated for NAS. The objective of this study was to characterize the stability of ethanolic buprenorphine for sublingual administration.
METHODS: Buprenorphine solution was prepared and stored in amber glass source bottles at either 68°F to 77°F (20°C-25°C) or 36°F to 46°F (2.2°C-7.8°C). Samples were collected from each of these batches on days 0, 3, 7, 14, and 30. Additional samples were withdrawn at baseline from each …

Improving The Fda Approval Process, Mark Van Der Laan, Anup Malani, Oliver Van Der Bembom
Public Law and Legal Theory Working Papers
The FDA employs an average-patient standard when reviewing drugs: it approves a drug only if is safe and effective for the average patient in a clinical trial. It is common, however, for patients to respond differently to a drug. Therefore, the average-patient standard can reject a drug that benefits certain patient subgroups (false negative) and even approval a drug that harms other patient subgroups (false positives). These errors increase the cost of drug development – and thus health care – by wasting research on unproductive or unapproved drugs. The reason why the FDA sticks with an average patient standard is …
The Development Of A Neonatal Communication Intervention Tool, Esedra Strasheim, Alta Kritzinger, Brenda Louw
The Development Of A Neonatal Communication Intervention Tool, Esedra Strasheim, Alta Kritzinger, Brenda Louw
ETSU Faculty Works
Neonatal communication intervention is important in South Africa, which has an increased prevalence of infants born with risks for disabilities and where the majority of infants live in poverty. Local literature showed a dearth of information on the current service delivery and roles of speech-language therapists (SLTs) and audiologists in neonatal nurseries in the South African context. SLTs have the opportunity to provide the earliest intervention, provided that intervention is well-timed in the neonatal nursery context. The aim of the research was to compile a locally relevant neonatal communication intervention instrument/tool for use by SLTs in neonatal nurseries of public …
