Citation Advantage Of Open Access Legal Scholarship, James M. Donovan, Carol A. Watson

Law Faculty Scholarly Articles

In this study focusing on the impact of open access on legal scholarship, the authors examine open access articles from three journals at the University of Georgia School of Law and confirm that legal scholarship freely available via open access improves an article’s research impact. Open access legal scholarship—which today appears to account for almost half of the output of law faculties—can expect to receive fifty-eight percent more citations than non–open access writings of similar age from the same venue.

Death Of The Tonb Shuttle Hypothesis, Ray A. Larsen, Michael G. Gresock, Marina I. Savenkova, Anne A. Ollis, Kathleen Postle Oct 2011

Death Of The Tonb Shuttle Hypothesis, Ray A. Larsen, Michael G. Gresock, Marina I. Savenkova, Anne A. Ollis, Kathleen Postle

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

A complex of ExbB, ExbD, andTonB couples cytoplasmic membrane (CM) proton motive force (pmf) to the active transport of large, scarce, or important nutrients across the outer membrane (OM). TonB interacts with OM transporters to enable ligand transport. Several mechanical models and a shuttle model explain how TonB might work. In the mechanical models, TonB remains attached to the CM during energy transduction, while in the shuttle model theTonB N terminus leaves the CM to deliver conformationally stored potential energy to OM transporters. Previous studies suggested thatTonB did not shuttle based on the activity of a GFP-TonB fusion that was …

It’S Not All Zeroes And Ones: Constructing Online Identity Assembly Theory, Adam W. Tyma, Lynette G. Leonard Oct 2011

It’S Not All Zeroes And Ones: Constructing Online Identity Assembly Theory, Adam W. Tyma, Lynette G. Leonard

Communication Faculty Proceedings & Presentations

The construction of online identity, though examined in other disciplines, has not yet been approached theoretically in the communication scholarship. Online identities cannot be understood as linear or static as some identity theory presents. Online identities need to be understood as continually changing representations, never fixed in one position, and perpetually in a state of assembly. Identity research within the communication literature has focused on specific characteristics of the medium (e.g., anonymity) and the effects of those characteristics on the outcomes of the communicative act rather than focusing on the communicative process of identity construction itself. In other words, past …

Human Movement Variability, Nonlinear Dynamics, And Pathology: Is There A Connection?, Nikolaos Stergiou, Leslie M. Decker Oct 2011

Human Movement Variability, Nonlinear Dynamics, And Pathology: Is There A Connection?, Nikolaos Stergiou, Leslie M. Decker

Journal Articles

Fields studying movement generation, including robotics, psychology, cognitive science, and neuroscience utilize concepts and tools related to the pervasiveness of variability in biological systems. The concept of variability and the measures for nonlinear dynamics used to evaluate this concept open new vistas for research in movement dysfunction of many types. This review describes innovations in the exploration of variability and their potential importance in understanding human movement. Far from being a source of error, evidence supports the presence of an optimal state of variability for healthy and functional movement. This variability has a particular organization and is characterized by a …

The Justiciability Of Climate Change: Acomparison Of Us And Canadian Approaches, Hugh Wilkins Oct 2011

The Justiciability Of Climate Change: Acomparison Of Us And Canadian Approaches, Hugh Wilkins

Dalhousie Law Journal

Climate change-related disputes, which often include novel, complex,or politically sensitive matters, have experienced a mixed reception by the courts. Defendants both in Canada and the United States have raised the issue of justiciabilitythe question of whether a matter is of the quality or state of being appropriate or suitable for review by a court-with some success in attempts to have these cases summarily dismissed. The author reviews the types ofclimate change cases that have been launched, examines the US and Canadian laws of justiciability analyzes the.paths in which the caselaw regarding justiciability in these countries is headed, and suggests how …

Using Vesicular Stomatitis Virus Glycoprotein To Pseudotype Bacmam Viruses For Enhancement Of Transduction Efficiency, Lydia Sanchez Oct 2011

Using Vesicular Stomatitis Virus Glycoprotein To Pseudotype Bacmam Viruses For Enhancement Of Transduction Efficiency, Lydia Sanchez

PCOM Biomedical Studies Student Scholarship

Baculovirus has been a common tool for protein production since the mid 1980s. The virus has an exclusive tropism only capable of infecting the larval stages of insects. Originally, baculovirus recombinant gene expression used Spodoptera frugiperda (Sf9) insect cells as the host cells for protein production. However, in 1995, it was discovered that baculoviruses could be modified to transduce mammalian cells with the insertion of a mammalian promoter and gene of interest. Due to its ease of generation and low biology safety hazards, this technology, known as BacMam (Baculovirus Mammalian) is popular in the research field for protein production and …

A Modified Stokes-Einstein Equation For A Beta Aggregation, Srisairam Achuthan, Bong Jae Chung, Preetam Ghosh, Vijayaraghavan Rangachari, Ashwin Vaidya

Faculty Publications

Background: In all amyloid diseases, protein aggregates have been implicated fully or partly, in the etiology of the disease. Due to their significance in human pathologies, there have been unprecedented efforts towards physiochemical understanding of aggregation and amyloid formation over the last two decades. An important relation from which hydrodynamic radii of the aggregate is routinely measured is the classic Stokes-Einstein equation. Here, we report a modification in the classical Stokes-Einstein equation using a mixture theory approach, in order to accommodate the changes in viscosity of the solvent due to the changes in solute size and shape, to implement a …

Cognitive Styles And Self-Efficacy Of Teacher Of English Language Learner Students, Jani Rodriguez Oct 2011

Cognitive Styles And Self-Efficacy Of Teacher Of English Language Learner Students, Jani Rodriguez

Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios

The fast growing number of ELL students in the nation's schools creates a greater challenge regarding the education of this particular population, where most of the challenges were related to school performance. The achievement difference among ELL students and monolingual English speaking students was notably marked (NCELA, 2008). In addition, the No Child Left Behind Act (NCLB) of 2001 established several requirements, including that teachers use research-based strategies. The National Center for Education Statistics (NCES, 2007) reported that only 29.5% of all teachers had formal training in strategies for ELL students. Smith-Davis (2004) highlighted that ELL teachers were not adequately …

An Investigation Of Brain Games As A Potential Non-Pharmaceutical Alternative For The Treatment Of Adhd, Stacy C. Wegrzyn Oct 2011

An Investigation Of Brain Games As A Potential Non-Pharmaceutical Alternative For The Treatment Of Adhd, Stacy C. Wegrzyn

Dissertations, Theses and Capstone Projects (Full IR Collection)

This study sought to determine if the daily use of brain games such as Nintendo DS Brain Age could increase the engagement of students with ADHD. The findings bridge the gap between prior research on the frontal lobe’s connection to ADHD and the studies that have indicated brain games can stimulate this area of the brain. Based on the compilation of data, there is hope for ADHD patients searching for an alternative to medication. Data from seven of the nine instruments utilized in this study support the overarching hypothesis that the daily use of brain games can help decrease the …

Mentoring Within The Minority Population: How To Retain And Matriculate Minorities In A College Setting, Brent Matthias Obleton Oct 2011

Mentoring Within The Minority Population: How To Retain And Matriculate Minorities In A College Setting, Brent Matthias Obleton

Dissertations, Theses and Capstone Projects (Full IR Collection)

In an ever-changing educational environment, it is pertinent that higher education institutions proactively implement strategies and programs that foster growth for the modern day college students. The establishment of effective support mechanisms is an essential component to aid in the development of students. Minority students, in particular, have shown a growing need to receive additional guidance outside of the traditional adherents (i.e., parents, personal ambition, educational advisors, etc). Historically, mentorship has been more prevalent in the private sector, used as a means to groom subordinates to take on new roles within their respective companies. However, assessment and the positive impact …

A Future Of Equality For Virginia's Tribes: Reform The Federal Recognition Process To Repair Injustice, Katherine A. Womack Oct 2011

A Future Of Equality For Virginia's Tribes: Reform The Federal Recognition Process To Repair Injustice, Katherine A. Womack

Law Student Publications

This article first examines the historical background of the Virginian-American Indian identity after European contact in Part I. This section looks at the early interactions between American Indians and colonial settlers, the treaties that defined American Indian identity, and the first government-to-government relationships between the tribes and colonial powers. It also follows the changing social attitudes toward American Indians. Part II discusses how social attitudes in the early twentieth century about American Indians led to long-reaching legal effects for Virginian-American Indians. Part III details the federal recognition process, and discusses how and why it denies Virginia’s tribes an equal place …
