Angels In The Metroplex: Hegel, The Apocrypha, And Intertextuality In Der Himmel Über Berlin (Wings Of Desire), Carrol Fry Oct 2011

Angels In The Metroplex: Hegel, The Apocrypha, And Intertextuality In Der Himmel Über Berlin (Wings Of Desire), Carrol Fry

Journal of Religion & Film

Semiologist Julia Kristeva defines intertextuality as the interaction of texts. “Any text builds itself as a mosaic of quotations; any text is the absorption and transformation of another.” Kristeva and other critics who analyze the interweaving of texts assume, as Plottel and Charney put it, that “Every text echoes another text unto infinity, weaving the fabric of culture itself.” Intertextual criticism offers interesting insights into Wim Wenders’ ironic portrayal of the traditional religious perspective on desire as opposed to Hegelian desire in Der Himmel über Berlin (American title Wings of Desire).

Active Multiple Kernel Learning For Interactive 3d Object Retrieval Systems, Steven C. H. Hoi, Rong Jin

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

An effective relevance feedback solution plays a key role in interactive intelligent 3D object retrieval systems. In this work, we investigate the relevance feedback problem for interactive intelligent 3D object retrieval, with the focus on studying effective machine learning algorithms for improving the user's interaction in the retrieval task. One of the key challenges is to learn appropriate kernel similarity measure between 3D objects through the relevance feedback interaction with users. We address this challenge by presenting a novel framework of Active multiple kernel learning (AMKL), which exploits multiple kernel learning techniques for relevance feedback in interactive 3D object retrieval. …

A Survey Of Techniques And Challenges In Underwater Localization, Hwee-Pink Tan, Roee Diamant, Winston K. G. Seah, Marc Waldmeyer Oct 2011

A Survey Of Techniques And Challenges In Underwater Localization, Hwee-Pink Tan, Roee Diamant, Winston K. G. Seah, Marc Waldmeyer

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Underwater Wireless Sensor Networks (UWSNs) are expected to support a variety of civilian and military applications. Sensed data can only be interpreted meaningfully when referenced to the location of the sensor, making localization an important problem. While global positioning system (GPS) receivers are commonly used in terrestrial WSNs to achieve this, this is infeasible in UWSNs as GPS signals do not propagate through water. Acoustic communications is the most promising mode of communication underwater. However, underwater acoustic channels are characterized by harsh physical layer conditions with low bandwidth, high propagation delay and high bit error rate. Moreover, the variable speed …

Efficient Evaluation Of Continuous Text Seach Queries, Kyriakos Mouratidis, Hwee Hwa Pang Oct 2011

Efficient Evaluation Of Continuous Text Seach Queries, Kyriakos Mouratidis, Hwee Hwa Pang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Consider a text filtering server that monitors a stream of incoming documents for a set of users, who register their interests in the form of continuous text search queries. The task of the server is to constantly maintain for each query a ranked result list, comprising the recent documents (drawn from a sliding window) with the highest similarity to the query. Such a system underlies many text monitoring applications that need to cope with heavy document traffic, such as news and email monitoring. In this paper, we propose the first solution for processing continuous text queries efficiently. Our objective is to …

Historical Biogeography Of Nebraska Pronghorns (Antilocapra Americana), Justin D. Hoffman, Hugh H. Genoways, Rachel R. Jones Oct 2011

Historical Biogeography Of Nebraska Pronghorns (Antilocapra Americana), Justin D. Hoffman, Hugh H. Genoways, Rachel R. Jones

University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers

Archeological and paleontological records indicate that the pronghorn (Antilocapra americana) have a history of at least 20,000 years of occurrence within the current boundaries of Nebraska. Pronghorns occurred throughout the state for much of its history. With the evidence at hand we concluded that the eastern boundary of the geographic distribution of the pronghorn south of the Niobrara River in Nebraska at the beginning of the 19th century was along the western perimeter of the eastern deciduous forest and tallgrass prairie. This excluded most of the easternmost tier of counties in the state. This geographic arrangement persisted throughout …

Analytical Evaluation Of Imaging Agents, Vineela Chowdary Talluri Oct 2011

Analytical Evaluation Of Imaging Agents, Vineela Chowdary Talluri

All Capstone Projects

The folate receptor has achieved great importance for use in targeted drug delivery and in vitro and in vivo diagnostic assays. The folate receptor (FR) is over expressed on several cancer cell types and activated macrophages, but exists in relatively low abundance on the surface of non-cancerous tissue and non inflammatory cells. This unique attribute is the hallmark of folate – targeted methodologies allowing the diagnostic agent and/or drug to be ferried to the specific disease sites while preventing “off target” effects in normal tissues. Although several folate-based dyes have been reported, simple and detailed synthetic and purification methods for …

Capture And Analysis Of Cells Using Magnetic Beads, Alexandro Dominguez Oct 2011

Capture And Analysis Of Cells Using Magnetic Beads, Alexandro Dominguez

All Capstone Projects

Magnetic separation of cells and bacterium is a fascinating field of study. There are tremendous capabilities in separation, selectivity, and sensitivity. Magnetic separation reduces complex techniques, time consuming preparation, and complicated multistep methods of separation. The separation of cells, bacterium, and macromolecules can be extremely challenging. Fortunately, magnetically tagged cells, bacterium and macromolecules can be easily separated without great expertise. Antibody magnetic micro beads are specific to a cell, bacterium, or macromolecules. Separating a mixture can lead to a better, more accurate analysis of samples that can be crucial in the medical field, therapeutic drug delivery systems, and in some circumstances …

Region-Of-Interest Material Decomposition From Truncated Energy-Resolved Ct, Taly Gilat Schmidt Oct 2011

Region-Of-Interest Material Decomposition From Truncated Energy-Resolved Ct, Taly Gilat Schmidt

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Purpose: Energy-resolved CT using photon-counting detectors has the potential to provide improved material decomposition compared to dual-kVp approaches. However, available photon-counting detectors are susceptible to pulse-pileup artifacts, especially at the periphery of the field of view (FOV) where the object attenuation is low compared to the center of the FOV. Pulse pileup may be avoided by imaging a region-of-interest (ROI) where the dynamic range is expected to be limited. This work investigated performing material decomposition and reconstructing ROI basis images from truncated energy-resolved data.

Methods: A method is proposed to reconstructimages of basis functions primarily contained within the ROI, such …

A Compressed Sensing Algorithm For Sparse-View Pinhole Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography, Paul Arthur Wolf, Emil Y. Sidky, Taly Gilat Schmidt Oct 2011

A Compressed Sensing Algorithm For Sparse-View Pinhole Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography, Paul Arthur Wolf, Emil Y. Sidky, Taly Gilat Schmidt

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT) systems are being developed with multiple cameras and without gantry rotation to provide rapid dynamic acquisitions. However, the resulting data is angularly undersampled, due to the limited number of views. We propose a novel reconstruction algorithm for sparse-view SPECT based on Compressed Sensing (CS) theory. The algorithm models Poisson noise by modifying the Iterative Hard Thresholding algorithm to minimize the Kullback-Leibler (KL) distance by gradient descent. Because the underlying objects of SPECT images are expected to be smooth, a discrete wavelet transform (DWT) using an orthogonal spline wavelet kernel is used as the sparsifying …

Analysis Of Potential Climate Change In Putnam County, Julia Roell, Peter Konieczny, Rudra Vishweshwar, Ben Harsha, Weiqing Zhang, Jim Mills Oct 2011

Analysis Of Potential Climate Change In Putnam County, Julia Roell, Peter Konieczny, Rudra Vishweshwar, Ben Harsha, Weiqing Zhang, Jim Mills

Student Research

During fall semester, 2011, five students in HONR 191, Science Research Fellows, were charged with determining if there was evidence of local climate change over the last 150 years as part of the larger global climate change phenomena the Earth is currently experiencing. The study consisted of two parts: one, an analysis of local climate data (temperature and precipitation) over the last 150 years, and two, an analysis of local tree rings.

Tree rings have the potential to provide information on local climate change as annual tree ring width is, in part, a function of temperature, precipitation, and nutrient availability. …

Biology Faculty Research

Five newly isolated mycobacteriophages--Angelica, CrimD, Adephagia, Anaya, and Pixie--have similar genomic architectures to mycobacteriophage TM4, a previously characterized phage that is widely used in mycobacterial genetics. The nucleotide sequence similarities warrant grouping these into Cluster K, with subdivision into three subclusters: K1, K2, and K3. Although the overall genome architectures of these phages are similar, TM4 appears to have lost at least two segments of its genome, a central region containing the integration apparatus, and a segment at the right end. This suggests that TM4 is a recent derivative of a temperate parent, resolving a long-standing conundrum about its biology, …

Secondary Students, Laptops And Game Design: Examining The Potential Of Homemade Powerpoint Games In A Blended Learning Environment, Michael Barbour, Jim Kinsella, Lloyd P. Rieber

Education Faculty Publications

The integration of technology into K-12 classrooms has long been hampered by the problem of scalability. Familiar software programs, such as MS PowerPoint, can be used as a tool for students to create educational games to deepen their understanding of content. In this article, the authors examine students in two secondary social studies classes that created homemade PowerPoint games as a way to review for their mid-term and final examinations. The authors compared student performance on these exams based upon the topics covered by their game design. While no significant differences in student outcomes were found, qualitative analyses indicate that …

Delineating Europe's Cultural Regions: Population Structure And Surname Clustering, James Cheshire, Pablo Mateos, Paul A. Longley

Human Biology Open Access Pre-Prints

Surnames (family names) show distinctive geographical patterning and remain an underutilised source of information about population origins, migration and identity. In this paper we investigate the geographical structure of surnames in 16 European countries through the use of the Lasker Distance, consensus clustering and multidimensional scaling. Our analysis is both data rich and computationally intensive, entailing as it does the aggregation, clustering and mapping of 8 million surnames collected from 152 million individuals. The resulting regionalisation demonstrates the utility of an innovative inductive approach to summarising and analysing large population datasets across cultural and geographic space, the outcomes of which …

Security And Environmental Change - Simon Dalby, Len Broberg Oct 2011

Security And Environmental Change - Simon Dalby, Len Broberg

International Dialogue

In Security and Environmental Change, Simon Dalby seeks to reframe national security in terms of environmental change and its threats to human safety and prosperity. Dalby promises a multifaceted examination of the issue, making clear that environmental change encompasses more than climate change but includes all human modifications of the planet: deforestation, water diversion and species extinction to name a few. In addition, the book seeks to deconstruct and rebuild the notion of security, moving out of classically framed Cold War national security focused on nation states toward a more human centered security. This effort succeeds and, in the process, …

Conservation Easements As Tools To Achieve Regulatory Environmental Goals, Laurie A. Wayburn Oct 2011

Conservation Easements As Tools To Achieve Regulatory Environmental Goals, Laurie A. Wayburn

Law and Contemporary Problems

Wayburn talks about conservation easements as tools to achieve regulatory environmental goals. The traditional approach to protecting public-trust resources, such as wildlife found on private lands, is predominantly regulatory and proscriptive. Environmental regulation -- such as the Endangered Species Act, Clean Water Act, or Clean Air Act -- has focused on restricting or prohibiting resource management by landowners.

A Tradable Conservation Easement For Vulnerable Conservation Objectives, W. William Weeks Oct 2011

A Tradable Conservation Easement For Vulnerable Conservation Objectives, W. William Weeks

Law and Contemporary Problems

Weeks talks about tradable conservation easement for vulnerable conservation objectives. The critical conservation objectives in some conservation easements will probably be compromised by the effects of climate change in the relatively near future. Conservation easements broadly intended and drafted to serve those kinds of general purposes are, as a group, unlikely to be so acutely affected by changing ecological conditions that their broad purposes will cease, over time, to be served.

Same-Sex Marriage, Second-Class Citizenship, And Law's Social Meanings, Michael C. Dorf Oct 2011

Same-Sex Marriage, Second-Class Citizenship, And Law's Social Meanings, Michael C. Dorf

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

Government acts, statements, and symbols that carry the social meaning of second-class citizenship may, as a consequence of that fact, violate the Establishment Clause or the constitutional requirement of equal protection. Yet social meaning is often contested. Do laws permitting same-sex couples to form civil unions but not to enter into marriage convey the social meaning that gays and lesbians are second-class citizens? Do official displays of the Confederate battle flag unconstitutionally convey support for slavery and white supremacy? When public schools teach evolution but not creationism, do they show disrespect for creationists? Different audiences reach different conclusions about the …

Extensive Clonal Spread And Extreme Longevity In Saw Palmetto, A Foundation Clonal Plant, Mizuki K. Takahashi, Liana M. Horner, Toshiro Kubota, Nathan A. Keller, Warren G. Abrahamson Ii

Faculty Journal Articles

The lack of effective tools have hampered our ability to assess the size, growth and ages of clonal plants. With Serenoa repens (saw palmetto) as a model, we introduce a novel analytical framework that integrates DNA fingerprinting and mathematical modelling to simulate growth and estimate ages of clonal plants. We also demonstrate the application of such life-history information of clonal plants to provide insight into management plans. Serenoa is an ecologically important foundation species in many Southeastern United States ecosystems; yet, many land managers consider Serenoa a troublesome invasive plant. Accordingly, management plans have been developed to reduce or eliminate …

Breeding Biology Of Oryzomys Palustris, The Marsh Rice Rat, In Eastern Virginia, Robert K. Rose, Erin A. Dreelin

Virginia Journal of Science

The objectives of our study were to determine the age of maturity, litter size, and the timing of the breeding season of marsh rice rats (Oryzomys palustris) of coastal Virginia. From May 1995 to May 1996, monthly samples of rice rats were live-trapped in two coastal tidal marshes of eastern Virginia, and then necropsied. Sexual maturity was attained at 30-40 g for both sexes. Mean litter size of 4.63 (N= 16) did not differ among months or in mass or parity classes. Data from two other studies conducted in the same county, one of them contemporaneous, also were …
