Status Of The Cockburn Sound Crab Fishery, Danielle Johnston, David Harris, Nick Caputi, Simon De Lestang, Adrian Thomson

Fisheries Research Reports

Blue swimmer crabs (Portunus armatus) (formerly Portunus pelagicus; Lai et al., 2010) in Cockburn Sound, Western Australia, are the basis of an important commercial and recreational fishery close to the Perth metropolitan area with the commercial fishery achieving a peak catch of 362 t in 1997/98 and a recreational catch of about 18 t. Commercial blue swimmer crab catches declined significantly since 2000 due to low stock abundance, resulting in the closure of the fishery in December 2006.

Exploring Marine Conservation Efforts In Tasmania: An Internship With Ocean Planet, Lauren Markram Oct 2011

Exploring Marine Conservation Efforts In Tasmania: An Internship With Ocean Planet, Lauren Markram

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

I chose to conduct a dual internship with Environment Tasmania and Ocean Planet. Although I was located in the ET office and conducted participant observation within that environment, I specifically worked on the Ocean Planet campaign to promote marine conservation efforts throughout Tasmania. I was drawn to this internship because the oceans are often disregarded within the environmental movement despite the fact that they are the key to life on earth and are in a degraded state. Further, Tasmania’s marine environment is utterly unique, with ninety percent of its marine life found nowhere else on earth. Despite the magnificent biodiversity …

Differentiating The Vulnerability Of Kothis And Hijras To Hiv/Aids: A Case Study Of Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, Poonam Daryani

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

The present study aims to begin the process of differentiation between the various subpopulations that fall under the agenda of interventions targeted at Males who have Sex with Males (MSM). This separation is accomplished though an investigation of the sociocultural factors and behavioral patterns impacting the vulnerability of MSM and transgender (TG) 5 communities to HIV/AIDS. Specifically, the situation of kothi and hijra populations are compared in order to understand how the differences in their cultural practices and lifestyles create unique sexual health needs. The study was completed in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh under the guidance of Bharosa Trust and MAAN …

Reconstructing The Farm: Life Stories Of Dutch Female Farmers, Marisa Turesky Oct 2011

Reconstructing The Farm: Life Stories Of Dutch Female Farmers, Marisa Turesky

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

My research asks: what are the lived experiences of female farmers within the hegemonic construction of the Dutch farmer and how have their roles shifted through time? Popular culture has implanted stereotypes that most female farmers are uneducated, low-class individuals but the six women whom I interviewed present life stories that complicate this. How did these women come into their roles as farmers? Once they became such entrepreneurs, what were their challenges in a potentially male-dominated profession? While there has been extensive research on rural women’s historical roles in farming, I analyze the personal experiences of a small sample of …

An Assessment Of Icthyofauna And Artisanal Fishing From The Port Of Pedregal In The Golfo De Chiriquí., Kathleen A. Carey

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

The artisanal fishery based out of Pedregal, on the Pacific Coast of Panama in the Chiriqui Province was studied to analyze the biodiversity and community structure of the icthyofaunal population and investigate the practices and opinions of the fishermen there. The study area is located in the Gulf of Chiriqui, and is heavily influenced by freshwater runoff from anthropogenically influenced rivers during. This is especially relevant during the rainy season. During two weeks in November, at the end of the rainy season, fishermen from one port in Pedregal were accompanied for the purposes of data collection and interviewing. The data …

A Study Of Sponge Aquaculture In Jambiani: Is Shallow Farming Feasible?, Sarah Friday Oct 2011

A Study Of Sponge Aquaculture In Jambiani: Is Shallow Farming Feasible?, Sarah Friday

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

In the village of Jambiani, Unguja, a Swiss NGO called Marine Cultures has established an experimental sponge farming initiative to improve local employment and support economic development. Currently, the main farming site is only accessible through SCUBA diving. This is consistent with experimental farm sites in other oceanic regions, as most are located in depths of at least five meters with sponges suspended vertically to maximize water flow exposure. Farms located in shallower water may not be conducive to sponge growth due to highly variable environmental conditions; however, no conclusive research has been conducted on this matter (Duckworth 2009). Nonetheless, …

Seaweed Farmer Education: Is It Enough To Sustain The Industry? Analyzing The Status Of Stakeholder Investment In Muungoni And Jambiani, Unguja, Erika Davis Oct 2011

Seaweed Farmer Education: Is It Enough To Sustain The Industry? Analyzing The Status Of Stakeholder Investment In Muungoni And Jambiani, Unguja, Erika Davis

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Since Filipino researchers arrived in Zanzibar to determine the potential for cultivation of seaweed more than 20 years ago, the islands' coastal communities have relied on the resource as a main or alternative source of income. When the companies started investing at the industry’s onset, trained personnel offered farmers' education on proper farming techniques for Spinosum (Eucheuma denticulatum) and Cottonii (Kappaphycus spp.) by establishing demonstrative (demo) farms and holding seminars. Today, informal training involves experienced farmers teaching the newcomers their techniques. While demo farms remain in some villages, companies offer no extension services based on the belief that the farmers …

Sam Van Aken: New Edens, Shannon Egan Oct 2011

Sam Van Aken: New Edens, Shannon Egan

Schmucker Art Catalogs

Hybridized fruit trees, grafted orchids on shiny, reflective aluminum pedestals, fluorescent lights placed vertically on stands, and sheets of silver Mylar create a lush and somewhat disorienting space in contemporary artist Sam Van Aken’s most recent body of work New Edens. Van Aken makes Gettysburg College’s Schmucker Art Gallery into a kind of fantastical and futuristic winter garden. Without daylight and despite the cool fall weather of the Northeast, the dozen trees in the gallery are leafy and green, some even bearing fruit. Peach, plum, cherry, nectarine and apricot branches emerge from a single trunk and grow productively alongside their …

Patterns In The Temporal Variability Of Temperate Reef Fishes And The Implications For Sampling Frequency In Citizen Science Monitoring Programs, Chelsea Parrish-Kuhn Oct 2011

Patterns In The Temporal Variability Of Temperate Reef Fishes And The Implications For Sampling Frequency In Citizen Science Monitoring Programs, Chelsea Parrish-Kuhn

SNS Master's Theses

Ecological monitoring enables our understanding of ecosystem change and is fundamental to the process of developing sound management policies. One major gap in all current California kelp forest monitoring programs is the limited frequency at which kelp forest fishes are sampled. Citizen science has been identified as a valuable tool to help meet monitoring needs in the marine environment, most recently in the California Marine Life Protection Act (1999). Because the costs of citizen science programs are mitigated by the use of volunteers, they are more able to expand their monitoring efforts to capture seasonal variations than other professional programs. …

An Assessment Of Control Methods For Cape Ivy In Coastal Riparian Ecosystems, Jennifer Stern Oct 2011

An Assessment Of Control Methods For Cape Ivy In Coastal Riparian Ecosystems, Jennifer Stern

SNS Master's Theses

The goals of this research were to quantify the achievable outcomes and associated costs of controlling Cape ivy (Delairea odorata), a non-native invasive plant. Current gaps in the knowledge-base limit decision makers from assigning appropriate costs, and therefore funding, for invasive species control (D’Antonio and Chambers 2006). Towards these goals, I measured and compared the success and cost-effectiveness of three control methods on Cape ivy in riparian areas along the Central Coast region of California. The control methods used in this study included hand removal, herbicide application (glyphosate), and a combination of these two methods. Control methods were applied to …

Government Prediction Markets: Why, Who, And How, Tom W. Bell Oct 2011

Government Prediction Markets: Why, Who, And How, Tom W. Bell

Dickinson Law Review (1908-2003)

This paper describes how prediction markets can make governments smarter, cheaper, and more responsive to changing conditions. A prediction market resembles a stock exchange where traders buy and sell not shares of companies, but claims about various future events. Academic and commercial use of prediction markets indicates that they offer a useful tool for encouraging, collecting, and quantifying widely scattered expertise. Government administrators have begun experimenting with prediction markets, too. Many questions remain, however, about the proper way to implement government prediction markets. This paper opens with a brief survey of the costs and benefits of government prediction markets. It …

Integrating Science And Policy: A Case Study Of The Hubbard Brook Research Foundation Science Links Program, Charles T. Driscoll, Kathy Fallon Lambert, Kathleen C. Weathers Oct 2011

Integrating Science And Policy: A Case Study Of The Hubbard Brook Research Foundation Science Links Program, Charles T. Driscoll, Kathy Fallon Lambert, Kathleen C. Weathers

Civil and Environmental Engineering - All Scholarship

Scientists, related professionals, and the public have for decades called for greater interaction among scientists, policymakers, and the media to address contemporary environmental challenges. Practical examples of effective “real-world” programs designed to catalyze interactions and provide relevant science are few. Existing successful models can be used, however, to develop and expand the work of integrating, synthesizing, and communicating ecosystem science for environmental policy and natural-resource management. We provide an overview of the structure and strategies used in the Hubbard Brook Research Foundation Science Links program, now in its thirteenth year as a successful boundary-spanning organization. We detail project activities and …

Green Marine Construction, Sylvain Pioch, Kirk Kilfoyle, Harold Levrel, Richard E. Spieler Oct 2011

Green Marine Construction, Sylvain Pioch, Kirk Kilfoyle, Harold Levrel, Richard E. Spieler

Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Articles

The oceans incorporate three-quarters of the Earth's surface, and most of humanity lives in coastal regions. For example, more than half of the total U.S. population presently lives in coastal areas, and the coastal population is projected to increase by 7 million between now and 2015. Similar projections can be made for other developed countries many of which depend on the coastal zone as a major source of tourism-related income. The long-term ecological health and sustainability of the marine and coastal environments are obviously at risk. Coastal projects such as beach re-nourishment, housing developments, and pipe-line, harbor and marina construction …

Cdc42 Regulates Extracellular Matrix Remodeling In Three Dimensions*, Nisha S. Sipes, Benjamin Feng, Fukun Guo, Hyung-Ok Lee, Fu-Sheng Chou, Jonathan Cheng, James Mulloy, Yi Zheng

Peer Reviewed Articles

Extracellular matrix (ECM) actively participates in normal cell regulation and in the process of tumor progression. The Rho GTPase Cdc42 has been shown to regulate cell-ECM interaction in conventional two-dimensional culture conditions by using dominant mutants of Cdc42 in immortalized cell lines that may introduce nonspecific effects. Here, we employ three-dimensional culture systems for conditional gene targeted primary mouse embryonic fibroblasts that better simulate the reciprocal and adaptive interactions between cells and surrounding matrix to define the role of Cdc42 signaling pathways in ECM organization. Cdc42 deficiency leads to a defect in global cell-matrix interactions reflected by a decrease in …

Ribozyme Stability, Exon Skipping, And A Potential Role For Rna Helicase In Group I Intron Splicing By Coxiella Burnetii, Linda D. Hicks, Indu Warrier, Rahul Raghavan, Michael F. Minnick Oct 2011

Ribozyme Stability, Exon Skipping, And A Potential Role For Rna Helicase In Group I Intron Splicing By Coxiella Burnetii, Linda D. Hicks, Indu Warrier, Rahul Raghavan, Michael F. Minnick

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

The 23S rRNA gene of Coxiella burnetii, the agent of Q fever in humans, contains an unusually high number of conserved, selfish genetic elements, including two group I introns, termed Cbu.L1917 (L1917) and Cbu.L1951 (L1951). To better understand the role that introns play in Coxiella's biology, we determined the intrinsic stability time periods (in vitro half-lives) of the encoded ribozymes to be similar to 15 days for L1917 and similar to 5 days for L1951, possibly due to differences in their sizes (551 and 1,559 bases, respectively), relative degrees of compactness of the respective RNA structures, and amounts of single-stranded …

The Roles Of Transcription And Genotoxins Underlying P53 Mutagenesis In Vivo, Barbara E. Wright, Karen H. Schmidt, Aaron T. Hunt, J Stephen Lodmell, Michael F. Minnick, Dennis K. Reschke Oct 2011

The Roles Of Transcription And Genotoxins Underlying P53 Mutagenesis In Vivo, Barbara E. Wright, Karen H. Schmidt, Aaron T. Hunt, J Stephen Lodmell, Michael F. Minnick, Dennis K. Reschke

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Transcription drives supercoiling which forms and stabilizes single-stranded (ss) DNA secondary structures with loops exposing G and C bases that are intrinsically mutable and vulnerable to non-enzymatic hydrolytic reactions. Since many studies in prokaryotes have shown direct correlations between the frequencies of transcription and mutation, we conducted in silico analyses using the computer program, mfg, which simulates transcription and predicts the location of known mutable bases in loops of high-stability secondary structures. Mfg analyses of the p53 tumor suppressor gene predicted the location of mutable bases and mutation frequencies correlated with the extent to which these mutable bases were exposed …
