Behavior Based Threat Assessment As A Tool For The Federal Protective Service In Mitigating Directed Violence, Aaron L. Godbey Oct 2011

Behavior Based Threat Assessment As A Tool For The Federal Protective Service In Mitigating Directed Violence, Aaron L. Godbey

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

The popular culture behind law enforcement of protecting and serving is slightly misrepresented because the majority of law enforcement organizations do not have a protective mission but a responsive mission. Select organizations such as the Federal Protective Service (FPS) has more than a responsive, investigative responsibility to the community they police; they also have a responsibility to protect their community from potential criminal and terrorist acts that have not yet happened. Utilizing the newest research from the Department of Homeland Security and their partnership with mental health providers, the United States Attorney"Ÿs Office and scholarly researchers this article provides the …

The French Colonial Mind, Volume 1, Martin Thomas Oct 2011

The French Colonial Mind, Volume 1, Martin Thomas

University of Nebraska Press: Sample Books and Chapters

What made France into an imperialist nation, ruler of a global empire with millions of dependent subjects overseas? Historians have sought answers to this question in the nation’s political situation at home and abroad, its socioeconomic circumstances, and its international ambitions. But all these motivating factors depended on other, less tangible forces, namely, the prevailing attitudes of the day and their influence among those charged with acquiring or administering a colonial empire. The French Colonial Mind explores these mindsets to illuminate the nature of French imperialism. The first of two linked volumes, Mental Maps of Empire and Colonial Encounters brings …

Computer Simulation Of A Mathematical Model Of Haart Therapy For Hiv-1 Aids, Frank Nani, Mingxian Jin Oct 2011

Computer Simulation Of A Mathematical Model Of Haart Therapy For Hiv-1 Aids, Frank Nani, Mingxian Jin

Math and Computer Science Faculty Working Papers

A clinically plausible mathematical model is constructed to describe the patho-physiological dynamics or HIV-1 induced AIDS during HAART therapy. The model equations incorporate physiological interactions between non-infected helper T cells, HIV-1 infected helper T cells, HIV-1 virions in the blood plasma, HIV-1 specific cytotoxic T cells and drug molecules or the HAART protocol. Investigative computer simulations arc performed to elucidate some therapeutic scenarios such as viral annihilation and efficacious HAART therapy. In particular, some mathematical criteria are derived for therapeutic outcomes such as viral persistence and viral annihilation.

Estimating Contemporary Effective Population Size On The Basis Of Linkage Disequilibrium In The Face Of Migration, Robin Waples, Phillip R. England Oct 2011

Estimating Contemporary Effective Population Size On The Basis Of Linkage Disequilibrium In The Face Of Migration, Robin Waples, Phillip R. England

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

Effective population size (Ne) is an important genetic parameter because of its relationship to loss of genetic variation, increases in inbreeding, accumulation of mutations, and effectiveness of selection. Like most other genetic approaches that estimate contemporary Ne, the method based on linkage disequilibrium (LD) assumes a closed population and (in the most common applications) randomly recombining loci. We used analytical and numerical methods to evaluate the absolute and relative consequences of two potential violations of the closed-population assumption: (1) mixture LD caused by occurrence of more than one gene pool, which would downwardly bias ^ …

The Pleiotropic Effects Of Lc8 On The Anchoring Protein In Flagellar Radial Spoke Complex, Anjali Gupta Oct 2011

The Pleiotropic Effects Of Lc8 On The Anchoring Protein In Flagellar Radial Spoke Complex, Anjali Gupta

Dissertations (1934 -)

The goal of this thesis is to elucidate the assembly mechanism of macromolecular complexes in the microtubule-based axoneme in flagella. The axoneme is comprised of more than 400 distinct polypeptides. While all axonemal proteins are synthesized in the cell body, they need to be imported to the tip of the growing flagella for the final assembly. They are then assembled into distinctive structural complexes and integrated into precise positions relative to each other. The assembled macromolecular complexes operate in concert enabling the axoneme to beat rhythmically as a biological machine. This arduous process involves multiple reactions and meticulous regulation. However, …

Mechanisms Of Neuronal Death Induced By Environmental Toxicants In Murine Cortical Culture, Travis Rush Oct 2011

Mechanisms Of Neuronal Death Induced By Environmental Toxicants In Murine Cortical Culture, Travis Rush

Dissertations (1934 -)

This study was directed at examining the neurotoxic mechanisms of several classes of environmental toxicants implicated in neurodegenerative disease. Primary cortical cultures were exposed to organophosphorus pesticides, heavy metals and the cyanobacterial toxin, beta-N-methylamino-L-alanine (BMAA). Several components relating to neuronal injury were assessed in each study and novel aspects are described.

The main action of organophosphorous insecticides is generally believed to be the inhibition of acetylcholinesterase. However, these compounds are now recognized to inhibit many other enzymes and cause neuronal death through a variety of mechanisms. I found that exposure to chlorpyrifos or diazinon caused concentration-dependent neurotoxicity that could not …

Barriers To Implementation Of Sustainable Construction Practices In The Homebuilding Industry: A Case Study Of Rochester, Ny, Heidi S. Tomkiewicz Oct 2011

Barriers To Implementation Of Sustainable Construction Practices In The Homebuilding Industry: A Case Study Of Rochester, Ny, Heidi S. Tomkiewicz

Architecture Masters of Science Program: Theses

This study will evaluate the current barriers to standardization and widespread implementation of sustainable practices in the residential homebuilding industry. A literature review evaluates and defines the relevant tenets of sustainability creating a cohesive definition of sustainable building practices for the purposes of this study. These defined features were used to evaluate current practices and certification programs. An analysis of the current scholarship on barriers to sustainable development combined with this information to create a framework for a case study of homebuilders and their practices in the greater Rochester, New York area. This study was conducted in order to ascertain …

Transgenic C. Elegans Dauer Larvae Expressing Hookworm Phospho Null Daf-16/Foxo Exit Dauer, Verena Gelmedin, Thomas Brodigan, Xin Gao, Michael Krause, Zhu Wang, John M. Hawdon

Research Center for Neglected Diseases of Poverty

Parasitic hookworms and the free-living model nematode Caenorhabtidis elegans share a developmental arrested stage, called the dauer stage in C. elegans and the infective third-stage larva (L3) in hookworms. One of the key transcription factors that regulate entrance to and exit from developmental arrest is the forkhead transcription factor DAF-16/FoxO. During the dauer stage, DAF-16 is activated and localized in the nucleus. DAF-16 is negatively regulated by phosphorylation by the upstream kinase AKT, which causes DAF-16 to localize out of the nucleus and the worm to exit from dauer. DAF-16 is conserved in hookworms, and hypothesized to control recovery from …

A High-Resolution Finite-Difference Method For Simulating Two-Fluid, Viscoelastic Gel Dynamics, Grady Wright, Robert D. Guy, Jian Du, Aaron L. Fogelson Oct 2011

A High-Resolution Finite-Difference Method For Simulating Two-Fluid, Viscoelastic Gel Dynamics, Grady Wright, Robert D. Guy, Jian Du, Aaron L. Fogelson

Mathematics Faculty Publications and Presentations

An important class of gels are those composed of a polymer network and fluid solvent. The mechanical and rheological properties of these two-fluid gels can change dramatically in response to temperature, stress, and chemical stimulus. Because of their adaptivity, these gels are important in many biological systems, e.g. gels make up the cytoplasm of cells and the mucus in the respiratory and digestive systems, and they are involved in the formation of blood clots. In this study we consider a mathematical model for gels that treats the network phase as a viscoelastic fluid with spatially and temporally varying material parameters …

Mapping Agroforestry Design In Project Tipitamba: The Influence Of Spacing On Tree Growth, Joseph Lee Oct 2011

Mapping Agroforestry Design In Project Tipitamba: The Influence Of Spacing On Tree Growth, Joseph Lee

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Agriculturalists in Brasil’s Zona Bragantina are balancing short term social and economic goals with the long term productivity of their agroecosystems. While these goals often times are seen as conflicting, the implementation of agroforestry systems through EMBRAPA’s Projeto Tipitamba has provided an opportunity for farmers in the region to intercrop quick growing, marketable, non-timber forest products with highly valued lumber species all on the same area of land. As Projeto Tipitamba also provides the associated farmers with access to a bush-chopper, it also allows for farmers to stop swidden, slash-and-burn, agriculture and convert to chop-and-mulch land preparation. As a result, …
