Rcq: Inter-Clinician Relationships, Practice Audit And Communities Of Practice For Healthcare Quality Improvement, Michael S. Dohan, Joseph Tan Oct 2011

Rcq: Inter-Clinician Relationships, Practice Audit And Communities Of Practice For Healthcare Quality Improvement, Michael S. Dohan, Joseph Tan

Transactions of the International Conference on Health Information Technology Advancement

Inter-clinician relationships and communities of practice have the ability to support continuous quality improvement efforts within healthcare organizations, by offering a means of sharing necessary knowledge that is generally not possessed by clinicians. Sustained adherence to the processes critical to quality improvement is necessary for durable improvements in quality, and knowledge sharing is necessary for supporting these skills, such as practice audit, change management and use of the associated technology. This paper unveils the RCQ (Relationships, Communities, Quality) model, which provides a framework for the purpose of sustaining practice audit for quality improvement in healthcare.

Effect Of Practitioner Self Care And Anxiety On Relationships Within The Context Of Organizational Change, Juanita Manning-Walsh Oct 2011

Effect Of Practitioner Self Care And Anxiety On Relationships Within The Context Of Organizational Change, Juanita Manning-Walsh

Transactions of the International Conference on Health Information Technology Advancement

The purpose of this research paper is to review the literature and suggest the relationships between organizational change through implementation of new health information technology (HIT) and/or reconfiguration of existing HIT, practitioner anxiety, and effective caring practitioner/patient and practitioner/practitioner relationships using a conceptual framework of Relationship Centered Care (RCC). Engaging in frequent and regular self-care interventions has been shown to be related to practitioner/patient caring ability and caring efficacy. According to a published model of RCC, it may be anticipated that selfcare may decrease practitioner anxiety in the context of organizational change and increase ability of the practitioner to engage …

Say Good-Bye To The Silos And Hello To Collaboration: A New Curriculum Approach, Sharie Falan, Bernard Han Oct 2011

Say Good-Bye To The Silos And Hello To Collaboration: A New Curriculum Approach, Sharie Falan, Bernard Han

Transactions of the International Conference on Health Information Technology Advancement

In sharp contrast with the customary traditions of educational silos in the delivery of knowledge and understanding, this paper presents a true interdisciplinary curriculum that is designed to supply the community with graduates who are prepared to take on diverse roles in health care and information management. The complexity of our modern communities and their anticipated futuristic needs suggest that graduates in health care must be able to apply more than a traditional singular knowledge domain to articulate problems and provide solutions to those problems in meaningful ways. The curriculum approach presented will facilitate interdisciplinary knowledge learning from existing classes, …

Guiding Health Care Policy Through Applied Public Health Modeling And Simulation, Jonathan P. Leidig, Chris L. Barrett, Madhav Marathe Oct 2011

Guiding Health Care Policy Through Applied Public Health Modeling And Simulation, Jonathan P. Leidig, Chris L. Barrett, Madhav Marathe

Transactions of the International Conference on Health Information Technology Advancement

The risk of a widespread epidemic is a primary public health concern with implications for healthcare providers and organizations. Modeling and simulation techniques have been successfully applied at the national level to set governmental polices and mitigation strategies through simulation-based predictions. Existing research in this field has been non-uniform in its coverage of local systems and region-specific findings. New collaborations between on the ground providers and modeling groups are required for successful simulation-based experimentation of region-specific health systems. These proposed collaborations are expected to contribute high-quality sub-population datasets to be used in experiments at the national level and allow for …

Dr7a: Changes In Ecosystem Services And Migration In Low-Lying Coastal Areas Over The Next 50 Years, Robert Costanza, Ida Kubiszewski, Joe Roman, Paul Sutton

Institute for Sustainable Solutions Publications and Presentations

This paper examines the history and current status of ecosystem services in low-lying coastal areas (LLCAs), their potential changes because of wider environmental and social shifts, and the potential impacts of these changes on human migration. We synthesised information from a number of sources on the status and value of ecosystem services in LLCAs, including information about key ecosystems that are likely to be particularly vulnerable to environmental change. We created maps of ecosystem and human population changes in LLCAs and then estimated changes in ecosystem services. Estimating the impacts of these potential changes depends on the future scenario one …

The Bonds That Tie: The Politics Of Motherhood And The Future Of Abortion Rights, Mary Ziegler Oct 2011

The Bonds That Tie: The Politics Of Motherhood And The Future Of Abortion Rights, Mary Ziegler

Scholarly Publications

What is the relationship between women’s still predominant share of caretaking work and the constitutional recognition of a right to choose abortion? Caretaking-based rationales for abortion rights have become increasingly prominent in the Supreme Court's abortion jurisprudence, as well as in abortion-rights litigation. These justifications propose that women tend overwhelmingly to raise their own children. Consequently, as the argument goes, the decision to give birth creates a lifetime commitment for most women, and in some cases, may cost women valuable career or educational opportunities.

When care taking-based rationales first appeared in the early 1970s in debate about rights to both …

Infectious Disease As A Security Threat, With Particular Application To The Migration Context, Marielena Faria Oct 2011

Infectious Disease As A Security Threat, With Particular Application To The Migration Context, Marielena Faria

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

This paper analyzes the threat infectious diseases impose on global security, specifically in the migration context. Infectious diseases can threaten security through a variety of areas, and this paper aims to identify the global spread of infectious diseases through migration, international crises, humanitarian emergencies, HIV/AIDS, and emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases. This paper explores global health, security, and migration in an attempt to determine if combining these three areas can be meaningful. Generally, studies approach only two of the three areas to examine a topic, but this paper will assess and point out when combining all three fields is relevant. …

The Perfect Storm: How Pro-Abortion Activists In The Netherlands Incite Social Change From International Waters, Julia Ellis‐Kahana Oct 2011

The Perfect Storm: How Pro-Abortion Activists In The Netherlands Incite Social Change From International Waters, Julia Ellis‐Kahana

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

This project is a sociological ethnography of the Women on Waves foundation, founded in 1999 by Dr. Rebecca Gomperts. As an international non-profit organization, they employ a direct action method: sailing to countries where abortion is illegal and providing safe abortion access. Local women board the ship that then travels 12 miles to international waters, where Dutch law applies, and the abortion pill can be administered legally. Using a feminist perspective, I interviewed five of the women at the organization in addition to the ship’s captain in order to understand the ideological beliefs about the reproductive rights that have inspired …

El Perro De Monte De Sechura: Su Relación Con El Bosque Seco Tropical Y La Gente De La Región Central De Manabí, Julian O. Buffam

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

The Cerro Hojas-Jaboncillo, located in Central Manabí, Ecuador, is a Patrimonial site that, in addition to containing the ruins of an ancient culture, is home to a species of mammal endemic to the tumbesian eco-region. Currently listed by the ‘LibroRojo de los mamíferos del Ecuador’ as vulnerable, the Sechuran Fox (Lycalopexsechurae) is a nocturnal and solitary animal, of a medium size, that is rarely seen due to its elusive behavior. This species is the focus of this investigation, which seeks to gain an understanding of the plants and animals that the Sechuran Fox requires for food, the home …

Preferencias Sexuales De Aves A Las Carreteras Los Efectos De La Carretera Cuenca - Molleturo – Naranjal En Las Proporciones De Los Sexos En Los Individuos De La Especies De Phrygilus Unicolor En El Parque Nacional De Cajas, Sarah Takushi

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Through the recent years, the Cuenca-Molleturo-Naranjal highway that cuts through the Cajas national park has been the object of much environmental research. In particular, the effects of the highway on the territorial distribution of the local avifauna—that includes many endemic and endangered species—has been a very important subject of study for the conservationists and the park managers. The following study is supplementary to the work of the University of Azuay and the University of Stoneybrook in New York. Here, we analyze how the highway may influence the sex ratios of one of the most commonly found specie—Phrygilus unicolor. Using observations …

Exploring Taksu & Meditation - Mysterious Power And The Tools To Realize It, Leonard Swanson Oct 2011

Exploring Taksu & Meditation - Mysterious Power And The Tools To Realize It, Leonard Swanson

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

I came to the island of Bali hoping to learn about the local people's spirituality, to witness how they practice faith, and to see if local wisdom could be brought back to America. Here, I became intrigued by the mysterious power of Taksu and the worldwide practice of meditation. For this Independent Study Project, I aim to examine the relationship between meditation and Taksu, and see if the combined wisdoms can be cross-culturally applicable to foreigners in the west.

Balinese Hindus place an important emphasis upon frequent, elaborate ceremonies, but this practice is too place/time/context specific to adapt into American …

Moms Behind Bars: Motherhood In Eshowe Correctional Center, Indiana Gowland Oct 2011

Moms Behind Bars: Motherhood In Eshowe Correctional Center, Indiana Gowland

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Motherhood represents a integral part of human life. In South Africa particularly, mothers are primarily responsible for caring for their families, often with little or no help from a male partner. But what happens to the notion of motherhood when women find themselves separated from their children or raising children in a restrictive and harsh environment? This study looks at the construction of motherhood within Eshowe Correctional Facility for Women. I conducted research as an attachment to Phoenix Zululand, an organization that provides rehabilitation services to inmates in the prisons of Zululand. For two weeks, I lead Phoenix's program “Starting …

Dopamine Regulation Of Cone-Cone Gap Junctions In Ground Squirrel Retina, Xiaoyu Li '12, Steven Devries Oct 2011

Dopamine Regulation Of Cone-Cone Gap Junctions In Ground Squirrel Retina, Xiaoyu Li '12, Steven Devries

Student Publications & Research

Cone photoreceptors are electrically coupled such that when the electrical potential in one cell changes, it also changes in adjacent, coupled cells. Phosphorylation of the cone gap junction protein, connexin 36 (Cx36), determines whether a coupling channel is “open” or “closed”. Cx36- containing gap junctions are phosphorylated in the open state and dephosphorylated in the closed state. Cone-cone gap junction modulation has not been extensively studied, however, the presence of rod-cone gap junction modulation raises the possibility that the same is true for cone pairs. Pieces of thirteen-lined ground squirrel retina were removed from the eye and the tissue was …

Afro-Derived Amazonian Populations: Inferring Continental Ancestry And Population Substructure, Luana Gomes Lopes Maciel, Elzemar Martins Ribeiro-Rodrigues, Ney Pereira Cameiro Dos Santos, Ândrea K. C. Ribeiro Dos Santos, João Farias Guerreiro, Sidney Emanuel Batista Dos Santos

Human Biology Open Access Pre-Prints

A panel of Ancestry Informative Markers (AIMs) was used to identify population substructure and estimate individual and overall interethnic admixture in 294 individuals from seven African-derived communities of the Brazilian Amazon. A panel of 48 biallelic markers, representing the insertion (IN) or the deletion (DEL) of small DNA fragments, was employed for this purpose. Overall interethnic admixture estimates showed high miscegenation with other ethnic groups in all populations (between 46% and 64%). The proportion of ancestral genes varied significantly among individuals of the sample: the contribution of African genes varied between 12% and 75%; of European genes between 10% and …

Transgenesis In Animal Agriculture: Addressing Animal Health And Welfare Concerns, Michael Greger Oct 2011

Transgenesis In Animal Agriculture: Addressing Animal Health And Welfare Concerns, Michael Greger

Transgenesis Collection

The US Food and Drug Administration’s final Guidance for Industry on the regulation of transgenesis in animal agriculture has paved the way for the commercialization of genetically engineered (GE) farm animals. The production-related diseases associated with extant breeding technologies are reviewed, as well as the predictable welfare consequences of continued emphasis on prolificacy at the potential expense of physical fitness. Areas in which biotechnology could be used to improve the welfare of animals while maintaining profitability are explored along with regulatory schema to improve agency integration in GE animal oversight.
