Regional Gray Matter Correlates Of Perceived Emotional Intelligence, Nancy S. Koven, Robert M. Roth, Matthew A. Garlinghouse, Laura A. Flashman, Andrew J. Saykin

Dartmouth Scholarship

Coping with stressful life events requires a degree of skill in the ability to attend to, comprehend, label, communicate and regulate emotions. Individuals vary in the extent to which these skills are developed, with the term ‘alexithymia’ often applied in the clinical and personality literature to those individuals most compromised in these skills. Although a frontal lobe model of alexithymia is emerging, it is unclear whether such a model satisfactorily reflects brain-related patterns associated with perceived emotional intelligence at the facet level. To determine whether these trait meta-mood facets (ability to attend to, have clarity of and repair emotions) have …

Potential Impacts Of The Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill On Large Pelagic Fishes, Sarah Frias-Torres, Charles R. Bostater Oct 2011

Potential Impacts Of The Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill On Large Pelagic Fishes, Sarah Frias-Torres, Charles R. Bostater

Ocean Engineering and Marine Sciences Faculty Publications

Biogeographical analyses provide insights on how the Deepwater Horizon oil spill impacted large pelagic fishes. We georeferenced historical ichthyoplankton surveys and published literature to map the spawning and larval areas of bluefin tuna, swordfish, blue marlin and whale shark sightings in the Gulf of Mexico with daily satellite-derived images detecting surface oil. The oil spill covered critical areas used by large pelagic fishes. Surface oil was detected in 100% of the northernmost whale shark sightings, in 32.8 % of the bluefin tuna spawning area and 38 % of the blue marlin larval area. No surface oil was detected in the …

Axl2 Integrates Polarity Establishment, Maintenance, And Environmental Stress Response In The Filamentous Fungus Ashbya Gossypii, Jonathan F. Anker, Amy S. Gladfelter Oct 2011

Axl2 Integrates Polarity Establishment, Maintenance, And Environmental Stress Response In The Filamentous Fungus Ashbya Gossypii, Jonathan F. Anker, Amy S. Gladfelter

Dartmouth Scholarship

In budding yeast, new sites of polarity are chosen with each cell cycle and polarization is transient. In filamentous fungi, sites of polarity persist for extended periods of growth and new polarity sites can be established while existing sites are maintained. How the polarity establishment machinery functions in these distinct growth forms found in fungi is still not well understood. We have examined the function of Axl2, a transmembrane bud site selection protein discovered in Saccharomyces cerevisiae, in the filamentous fungus Ashbya gossypii. A. gossypii does not divide by budding and instead exhibits persistent highly polarized growth, and multiple axes …

Approaches To Open Data For Science In Spain, E Wulff-Barreiro Oct 2011

Approaches To Open Data For Science In Spain, E Wulff-Barreiro

Copyright, Fair Use, Scholarly Communication, etc.

As observational data has attained new legal status, allowing their integration into open Internet systems, and experimental data continues to be assembled in common and free platforms, state of the art, easy to access data repositories have been designed in Spain. These repositories have removed many obstacles to re-utilization of GIS and other data. European legislation has also made advances in opening biodiversity data, including a European space in the Latin-American grid infrastructure. Open access biomedical repositories attract commercial attention while astronomical, meteorological, and oncological institutions promote data quality and access. This paper describes recent approaches to open access data …

Parathyroid Hormone And Cell Signaling In Bone Remodeling, Christina Battista Oct 2011

Parathyroid Hormone And Cell Signaling In Bone Remodeling, Christina Battista

Theses

Many mathematical models relevant to osteoporosis have been developed and studied. Although osteoclasts and osteoblasts are the crucial variables in bone resorption and bone formation, PTH can cause changes in the ratio of these cells and therefore should be studied more closely. Some of the current models for osteoporosis will be analyzed in this thesis as well as amended to account for the phenomenon that occurs with various methods of PTH administration. By administering PTH in either pulsatile or continuous doses, we obtain very different results. When administered in a continuous fashion, the body experiences a net bone loss over …

Studies have shown that HIV-infected patients develop neurocognitive disorders characterized by neuronal dysfunction. The lack of productive infection of neurons by HIV suggests that viral and cellular proteins, with neurotoxic activities, released from HIV-1-infected target cells can cause this neuronal deregulation. The viral protein R (Vpr), a protein encoded by HIV-1, has been shown to alter the expression of various important cytokines and inflammatory proteins in infected and uninfected cells; however the mechanisms involved remain unclear. Using a human neuronal cell line, we found that Vpr can be taken up by neurons causing: (i) deregulation of calcium homeostasis, (ii) endoplasmic …

Microarray-Based Cancer Prediction Using Single Genes., Xiaosheng Wang, Richard Simon Oct 2011

Microarray-Based Cancer Prediction Using Single Genes., Xiaosheng Wang, Richard Simon

Journal Articles: Genetics, Cell Biology & Anatomy

BACKGROUND: Although numerous methods of using microarray data analysis for cancer classification have been proposed, most utilize many genes to achieve accurate classification. This can hamper interpretability of the models and ease of translation to other assay platforms. We explored the use of single genes to construct classification models. We first identified the genes with the most powerful univariate class discrimination ability and then constructed simple classification rules for class prediction using the single genes.

RESULTS: We applied our model development algorithm to eleven cancer gene expression datasets and compared classification accuracy to that for standard methods including Diagonal Linear …

In Response: Maintenance Ect, Max Fink, Md Oct 2011

In Response: Maintenance Ect, Max Fink, Md

Jefferson Journal of Psychiatry

Therapy resistance, relapsing illness, and rapid cycling are aspects of chronic affective illness that continue to frustrate us. ECT was re-introduced to answer the problem of therapy resistant depression. In their recent review, Matzen et al. (I), report their experience in eight cases treated with maintenance ECT. They argue that maintenance ECT should also be considered for relapsing depressive illness.

No systematic study of maintenance ECT has been undertaken since the early I950s, and yet, as reported by Kramer (2) it continues to be used. Kramer directed inquiries to members of the International Association for the Advancement of Electrotherapy. Of …

Seasonal Affective Disorder: Sad Or Fad?, J. Thomas Pichot, Md, Peter S. Jensen, Md Oct 2011

Seasonal Affective Disorder: Sad Or Fad?, J. Thomas Pichot, Md, Peter S. Jensen, Md

Jefferson Journal of Psychiatry

Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) and phototherapy have recently been the subject of a great deal of interest in the psychiatric literature. First described in 1984 (I), SAD is now defined as "a cyclic illness characterized by recurrent episodes of fall/winter depression alternating with periods of spring/summer euthymia (normal mood) or hypomania (mild elation and behavioral activation)" (2) . Recent findings indicate that there may be at least two additional patterns of seasonal depressions, one characterized by annual summer depressions with euthyrnic, hypomanic or manic symptoms in the winter, and the other characterized by depressive episodes occurring in both winter and …

Clonidine In The Treatment Of Tardive Dyskinesia: A Case Review, Vikram Khot, Md, Jean Goodwin, Md, Mph, Geoff Wandry, Md Oct 2011

Clonidine In The Treatment Of Tardive Dyskinesia: A Case Review, Vikram Khot, Md, Jean Goodwin, Md, Mph, Geoff Wandry, Md

Jefferson Journal of Psychiatry

Over the past several years, a number of cardiovascular preparations have become widely used in psychiatry. For example, propranolol, introduced for its anti-anginal properties, is now used for stage-fright, lithium tremor and neuroleptic induced akathisia (1,2). Calcium channel blockers are expected to prove useful in the treatment of bipolar affective disorders (3,4). Clonidine exemplifies the rapidity and variety with which a cardiovascular agent has been applied to psychiatric syndromes. Clonidine, a centrally acting anti-hypertensive drug with both alpha-l and alpha-2 adrenergic agonistic properties, has already been used in the treatment of narcotic with drawal, benzodiazepine withdrawal, Tourette's syndrome, akathisia, depression, …

Countertransference And Inpatient Psychiatry: Theoretical And Clinical Aspects, Edward Kim, Md Oct 2011

Countertransference And Inpatient Psychiatry: Theoretical And Clinical Aspects, Edward Kim, Md

Jefferson Journal of Psychiatry

Few aspects of psychiatric training are more troubling to beginning residents than the emerging awareness of their own countertransferences. This is often viewed with a mixture of disgust and embarassment as a sign of incompetence and lack of professionalism. Conflicting views on the origins of, and appropriate responses to countertransference further add to the difficulty and anxiety of psychiatric training. The frustration and sense of helplessness which often accompany these feelings can lead to disillusionment and various degrees of acting out which ultimately compromise patient care and resident education. Ironically, the feeling of being overwhelmed by countertransference can often occur …

Translational Regulation Of Acetylcholinesterase By The Rna Binding Protein Pumilio-2 At The Neuromuscular Synapse, Emilio Marrero Oct 2011

Translational Regulation Of Acetylcholinesterase By The Rna Binding Protein Pumilio-2 At The Neuromuscular Synapse, Emilio Marrero

Open Access Dissertations

In skeletal muscle acetylcholinesterase AChE is highly expressed at sites of nerve-muscle contact where it is regulated at both the transcriptional and post-transcriptional levels. Scientists have elucidated many aspects of synaptic AChE structure, function, and localization during the past 80 years. However our understanding of the molecular mechanisms underlying its regulation is incomplete, but it appears to involve both translational and post-translational events as well. We found that Pumilio-2 (PUM2), an RNA binding translational repressor, is highly localized at the neuromuscular junction where AChE mRNA concentrates and that PUM2 binds to the AChE transcripts when immoprecipitation studies were performed. A …

Anchor Institutions-Connecting With Community For Innovation And Opportunity, Nancy Cantor

Chancellor's Collection

On the surface, it would be hard to find institutions situated more differently than Syracuse University in upstate New York and the University of Texas in the Rio Grande Valley. We are a private university in a post-industrial Rust Belt city. For nearly 60 years, residents have been leaving the city for the hilly lake country around us, ignoring both the city’s attractions and the drawbacks of commuting by car through 170 inches of snow a year. Even the SU campus, which sits on a hill close to downtown, was cut off from the city center by the construction of …
