Improving Multi-Label Classification By Avoiding Implicit Negativity With Incomplete Data, Derrall L. Heath Oct 2011

Improving Multi-Label Classification By Avoiding Implicit Negativity With Incomplete Data, Derrall L. Heath

Theses and Dissertations

Many real world problems require multi-label classification, in which each training instance is associated with a set of labels. There are many existing learning algorithms for multi-label classification; however, these algorithms assume implicit negativity, where missing labels in the training data are automatically assumed to be negative. Additionally, many of the existing algorithms do not handle incremental learning in which new labels could be encountered later in the learning process. A novel multi-label adaptation of the backpropagation algorithm is proposed that does not assume implicit negativity. In addition, this algorithm can, using a naive Bayesian approach, infer missing labels in …

Looking At Zoos, Irus Braverman Oct 2011

Looking At Zoos, Irus Braverman

Journal Articles

Looking at zoos from the perspective of zoo personnel, this article explores the importance of vision in the zoo’s presentation of its animals as well as the major technologies that the zoo uses to intensify such animal visions. On the one end of the spectrum, zoogeography and immersion design are used at the zoo exhibit to enable zoogoers to see animals in their naturalistic settings. On the opposite end of the spectrum, animals are caged and cared for in the highly artificial settings of the zoo’s holding area, with little or no exposure to the public gaze. In between these …

Electrosensory Ampullary Organs Are Derived From Lateral Line Placodes In Bony Fishes, Melissa S. Modrell, William E. Benis, R. Glenn Northcutt, Marcus C. Davis, Clare V.H. Baker

Faculty Articles

Electroreception is an ancient subdivision of the lateral line sensory system, found in all major vertebrate groups (though lost in frogs, amniotes and most ray-finned fishes). Electroreception is mediated by 'hair cells' in ampullary organs, distributed in fields flanking lines of mechanosensory hair cell-containing neuromasts that detect local water movement. Neuromasts, and afferent neurons for both neuromasts and ampullary organs, develop from lateral line placodes. Although ampullary organs in the axolotl (a representative of the lobe-finned clade of bony fishes) are lateral line placode-derived, non-placodal origins have been proposed for electroreceptors in other taxa. Here we show morphological and molecular …

Viral Double-Strand Rna-Binding Proteins Can Enhance Innate Immune Signaling By Toll-Like Receptor 3, Yvonne Lai, Guanghui Yi, Alice Chen, Kanchan Bhardwaj, Brady J. Tragesser, Rodrigo A. Valverde, Adam Zlotnick, Suchetana Mukhopadhyay, C. T. Ranjith-Kumar, C. Cheng Kao Oct 2011

Viral Double-Strand Rna-Binding Proteins Can Enhance Innate Immune Signaling By Toll-Like Receptor 3, Yvonne Lai, Guanghui Yi, Alice Chen, Kanchan Bhardwaj, Brady J. Tragesser, Rodrigo A. Valverde, Adam Zlotnick, Suchetana Mukhopadhyay, C. T. Ranjith-Kumar, C. Cheng Kao

Faculty Publications

Toll-like Receptor 3 (TLR3) detects double-stranded (ds) RNAs to activate innate immune responses. While poly(I:C) is an excellent agonist for TLR3 in several cell lines and in human peripheral blood mononuclear cells, viral dsRNAs tend to be poor agonists, leading to the hypothesis that additional factor(s) are likely required to allow TLR3 to respond to viral dsRNAs. TLR3 signaling was examined in a lung epithelial cell line by quantifying cytokine production and in human embryonic kidney cells by quantifying luciferase reporter levels. Recombinant 1b hepatitis C virus polymerase was found to enhance TLR3 signaling in the lung epithelial BEAS-2B cells …

River Drying Lowers The Diversity And Alters The Composition Of An Assemblage Of Desert Riparian Arthropods, Kevin E. Mccluney, John L. Sabo Oct 2011

River Drying Lowers The Diversity And Alters The Composition Of An Assemblage Of Desert Riparian Arthropods, Kevin E. Mccluney, John L. Sabo

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Summary 1. Many studies have shown negative effects of river drying on in‐stream animals. However, the influence of river drying on riparian animals remains poorly studied. We examined ground‐dwelling riparian arthropod assemblages along a drying section of the semi‐arid San Pedro River in southeastern Arizona, U.S.A.

2. We found strong differences in assemblage composition, taxon diversity and the abundance of key taxa between dry and flowing sites, with higher diversity and abundance of most taxa at flowing sites.

3. Changes in assemblage composition, taxon diversity and abundance of representative taxa were associated with a combined measure of water availability that …

Preparation And Characterization Of A Composite Of Gold Nanoparticles And Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes And Its Potential For Heterogeneous Catalysis, Anne Shanahan, James Sullivan, Mary Mcnamara, Hugh Byrne Oct 2011

Preparation And Characterization Of A Composite Of Gold Nanoparticles And Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes And Its Potential For Heterogeneous Catalysis, Anne Shanahan, James Sullivan, Mary Mcnamara, Hugh Byrne

Articles

A single-walled carbon nanotube-supported gold nanoparticle composite was prepared and characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning transmission electron microscopy/scanning electron microscopy/transmission electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray analysis, atomic absorption spectroscopy, nitrogen adsorption, Raman spectroscopy, and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy. The Au particles were found to be crystalline, with a well-defined and narrow particle-size distribution, centered around 7 nm. The activity and selectivity of the composite for solventless aerobic oxidation of a secondary alcohol were examined, and a conversion efficiency of 95% was obtained.
