Calcium-Mediated Mechanisms Of Cystic Expansion, Shakila Abdul-Majeed, Surya M. Nauli
Calcium-Mediated Mechanisms Of Cystic Expansion, Shakila Abdul-Majeed, Surya M. Nauli
Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research
In this review, we will discuss several well-accepted signaling pathways toward calcium-mediated mechanisms of cystic expansion. The second messenger calcium ion has contributed to a vast diversity of signal transduction pathways. We will dissect calcium signaling as a possible mechanism that contributes to renal cyst formation. Because cytosolic calcium also regulates an array of signaling pathways, we will first discuss cilia-induced calcium fluxes, followed by Wnt signaling that has attributed to much-discussed planar cell polarity. We will then look at the relationship between cytosolic calcium and cAMP as one of the most important aspects of cyst progression. The signaling of …

Generic Phases Of Cross-Linked Active Gels: Relaxation, Oscillation And Contractility, Shiladitya Banerjee, Tanniemola B. Liverpool, M. C. Marchetti
Physics - All Scholarship
We study analytically and numerically a generic continuum model of an isotropic active solid with internal stresses generated by non-equilibrium `active' mechano-chemical reactions. Our analysis shows that the gel can be tuned through three classes of dynamical states by increasing motor activity: a constant unstrained state of homogeneous density, a state where the local density exhibits sustained oscillations, and a steady-state which is spontaneously contracted, with a uniform mean density.

New Insights Into The Androgen-Targeted Therapies And Epigenetic Therapies In Prostate Cancer., Abhijit M Godbole, Vincent C O Njar
Kimmel Cancer Center Faculty Papers
Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men in the United States, and it is the second leading cause of cancer-related death in American men. The androgen receptor (AR), a receptor of nuclear family and a transcription factor, is the most important target in this disease. While most efforts in the clinic are currently directed at lowering levels of androgens that activate AR, resistance to androgen deprivation eventually develops. Most prostate cancer deaths are attributable to this castration-resistant form of prostate cancer (CRPC). Recent work has shed light on the importance of epigenetic events including facilitation of AR signaling …

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Library Materials
Background: Timing the origin of human malarias has been a focus of great interest. Previous studies on the mitochondrial genome concluded that Plasmodium in primates, including those parasitic to humans, radiated relatively recently during a process where host switches were common. Those investigations, however, assumed constant rate of evolution and tightly bound (fixed) calibration points based on host fossils or host distribution. We investigate the effect of such assumptions using different molecular dating methods. We include parasites from Lemuroidea since their distribution provides an external validation to time estimates allowing us to disregard scenarios that cannot explain their introduction …

Capstone Experiences: Effects Of Adapted Physical Activity Design Projects On Attitudes And Learning, David W. Hey, Bridie Jean Mccarey, Lynne A. Slivovsky, J. Kevin Taylor, Brian Self, James Widmann
Kinesiology and Public Health
Eight innovative senior level capstone engineering projects were completed at California Polytechnic State University (2008-present) involving (n=28) students (23 male/5 female). All projects involved the design of equipment to facilitate physical activity for people with disabilities. The effects on: i) learning design, ii) attitude towards people with disabilities, and iii) motivation to complete team design projects were analyzed through eight one-hour focus groups. This paper presents focus group findings using a constructivist approach and grounded theory to explore the overall student “learn by doing” experience. Results: (1) Approximately 19 (70%) of the students claimed the adapted physical activity …

National Transplantation Pregnancy Registry Celebrates 20th Anniversary
National Transplantation Pregnancy Registry Celebrates 20th Anniversary
Jefferson Surgical Solutions
This year marks the 20th anniversary of the National Transplantation Pregnancy Registry (NTPR). Established at Jefferson, this unique registry is a voluntary study, in which transplant recipients (both men and women) report their experiences with conception, pregnancy, childbirth, and the health of the recipient. The NTPR was founded by Principal Investigator Vincent Armenti, MD, PhD, a Jefferson alumnus and former transplant fellow with a dual faculty appointment as Professor in the Department of Surgery (Transplantation Division) and the Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology.
Dr. Armenti’s interest was sparked two decades ago when a transplant recipient told him she …

On The Job: Dr. Karen Chojnacki, Residency Program Director
Jefferson Surgical Solutions
Karen Chojnacki, MD, FACS, who has directed the General Surgery Residency Program for the past three years, was a resident at Jefferson from 1995 to 2000 – and loved it. Following a fellowship in minimally invasive surgery at the University of Southern California and a brief stint in private practice, she returned to Jefferson in early 2002, jumping at the chance to capture her “dream job” and buoyed by memories of the institution’s camaraderie and professionalism. “Whoever said ‘You can’t go home again’ didn’t have a home like Jefferson,” she says. “I lead the program that helped make me the …
Death And Dying In The Curriculum Of Public Schools: Is There A Place?, Ethel King-Mckenzie
Death And Dying In The Curriculum Of Public Schools: Is There A Place?, Ethel King-Mckenzie
Journal of Emerging Knowledge on Emerging Markets
Death and dying is not myth but a reality of life and living. Though some of us view death as a stranger and try to evade its existence as much as we can, death is inevitable. This paper proposes the inclusion of death and dying in the school curriculum and offers several ways of integrating death and dying in the curriculum for different grade levels. It argues that death has visited frequently on our school campuses and in national life over the past decades and there is always a sense of despair, panic and uncertainty about how to react to …

The 2007 Chinese Pet Food Crisis: On U.S. Media’S Coverage And U.S. Pet-Owners Reactions, May Hongmei Gao
Journal of Emerging Knowledge on Emerging Markets
In the midst of U.S. citizens’ growing concern of food quality, few issues have shocked the American conscience as the 2007 pet food crisis. The crisis, caused by the contamination of mainly pet food with ingredients imported from China, resulted in the largest recall in U.S. history. Poisonous chemicals such as “melamine,” “aminopterin,” and “cyanuric acid” were identified in pet food products imported from China. The pet food contamination was eventually extended to the feed for fish, pigs, and chicken, animals destined to be part of human food supply. This research showed that most American families own cats and dogs …

Overview Of Literature Relevant To Information And Communication Technology Based Healthcare Design In Rural China, Jiehui Jiang, Prabhu Kandachar, Adinda Freudenthal
Journal of Emerging Knowledge on Emerging Markets
ICT healthcare design in rural China is a special topic in product development, and various outputs about ICT, healthcare and rural China from literature are relevant to it. In this paper the author reviews those publications and defines three domains: Design for Base of the Pyramid, User Centered Design and ICT healthcare design. After studying these papers, the author founds out that none of exiting design models can be directly adapted into ICT healthcare design in rural China because some knowledge gaps have not been bridged yet now. As a discussion, the author proposes three investigation areas for the future …

Little Ecological Divergence Associated With Speciation In Two African Rain Forest Tree Genera, Thomas Lp Couvreur, Holly Porter-Morgan, Jan J. Wieringa, Lars W. Chatrou
Publications and Research
Background The tropical rain forests (TRF) of Africa are the second largest block of this biome after the Amazon and exhibit high levels of plant endemism and diversity. Two main hypotheses have been advanced to explain speciation processes that have led to this high level of biodiversity: allopatric speciation linked to geographic isolation and ecological speciation linked to ecological gradients. Both these hypotheses rely on ecology: in the former conservation of ecological niches through time is implied, while in the latter adaptation via selection to alternative ecological niches would be a prerequisite. Here, we investigate the role of ecology in …
