The Leadership Triad: Identity, Integrity, Authenticity, David Henderson Oct 2011

The Leadership Triad: Identity, Integrity, Authenticity, David Henderson

Administrative Issues Journal

The purpose of this qualitative intrinsic case study was to analyze how the inner lives of fifteen educational leaders impacted their leadership practice. The common experience of the Courage To Lead (CTL) program defined the case. This case study was bound by place as the cohort of educational leaders involved in this study were all from the Seattle area in Washington State and experienced the CTL program in 2002-2004 at the same venue. The study is bounded by time in that the analysis of the participants was from the beginning of their CTL experience in November, 2002 until January, 2007. …

Why Not Consider A Spherical Protein? Implications Of Backbone Hydrogen Bonding For Protein Structure And Function, Michal Brylinski, Mu Gao, Jeffrey Skolnick Oct 2011

Why Not Consider A Spherical Protein? Implications Of Backbone Hydrogen Bonding For Protein Structure And Function, Michal Brylinski, Mu Gao, Jeffrey Skolnick

Faculty Publications

The intrinsic ability of protein structures to exhibit the geometric features required for molecular function in the absence of evolution is examined in the context of three systems: the reference set of real, single domain protein structures, a library of computationally generated, compact homopolypeptides, artificial structures with protein-like secondary structural elements, and quasi-spherical random proteins packed at the same density as proteins but lacking backbone secondary structure and hydrogen bonding. Without any evolutionary selection, the library of artificial structures has similar backbone hydrogen bonding, global shape, surface to volume ratio and statistically significant structural matches to real protein global structures. …

Survival Of The Fittest: An Examination Of The Louisiana Science Education Act, Robert E. Morelli Oct 2011

Survival Of The Fittest: An Examination Of The Louisiana Science Education Act, Robert E. Morelli

St. John's Law Review

(Excerpt)

This Note asserts that the Louisiana Science Education Act is likely to be found unconstitutional under the Establishment Clause of the United States Constitution. Part I will examine the progression and development of the failed creationist challenges to evolution, as well as provide the relevant framework used by the courts to evaluate Establishment Clause challenges to public school curricula. Part II will set out the social context and history of the LSEA itself. Part III will then proceed to examine the LSEA and its background under the framework established in Part I to show that it is unconstitutional.

Gangs Of New York Are Terrorists? The Misapplication Of The New York Antiterrorism Statute Due To The Lack Of Comprehensive Gang Legislation, Chantal Tortoroli

St. John's Law Review

(Excerpt)

Part I of this Note details the background of the New York antiterrorism statute. It explains the relevant legislative history, as well as the structure and wording of the statute. Part II explores the controversial application of the New York antiterrorism statute to a gang member in the Bronx, setting out the arguments for and against its application, made by the Bronx District Attorney's Office and Morales, respectively.

Part III argues that the statute was inappropriately applied against a New York City gang member, an application which was permissible due to vague terms within the statute. By clarifying certain …

Proliferating Cell Nuclear Antigen Is Required For Loading Of The Smcx/Kmd5c Histone Demethylase Onto Chromatin., Zhihui Liang, Marc Diamond, Johanna A Smith, Matthias Schnell, René Daniel

Department of Medicine Faculty Papers

UNLABELLED: ABSTRACT:

BACKGROUND: Histone methylation is regulated by a large number of histone methyltransferases and demethylases. The recently discovered SMCX/KMD5C demethylase has been shown to remove methyl residues from lysine 4 of histone H3 (H3K4), and constitutes an important component of the regulatory element-1-silencing transcription factor (REST) protein complex. However, little is known about the cellular mechanisms that control SMCX activity and intracellular trafficking.

RESULTS: In this study, we found that small interfering RNA-mediated knockdown of proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) resulted in the reduction of the chromatin-bound SMCX fraction. We identified a PCNA-interaction protein motif (PIP box) in the …

Adventures In Marketing: Tales Of A New Librarian, Kirstin Duffin

Faculty & Staff Research & Creative Activity

I began working at Booth Library in February 2011 as liaison librarian for the Biological Sciences and Chemistry departments. Prior to my arrival, faculty of these departments had not been interacting actively with the library, and students from these departments had not been receiving library instruction geared toward their field of study. Considering discussions I had in library school and following suggestions from my fellow librarians, I created an action plan to introduce myself to these departments.

The Crosstalk Between Human Fatty Acid Transport Protein 1 And Fatty Acid Transport Protein 4, Zhe Yuan Oct 2011

The Crosstalk Between Human Fatty Acid Transport Protein 1 And Fatty Acid Transport Protein 4, Zhe Yuan

Department of Biochemistry: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Fatty acid transport proteins (FATPs) provide pivotal roles in fatty acid transport and activation and thus are crucial for overall fatty acid homeostasis. Peroxisome Proliferators Activated Receptors (PPARs) are important transcription factors, which control many genes that govern lipid metabolism.

Using 293 T-REx cell lines that stably express FATP1 or FATP4 from a tetracycline-inducible promoter, this work evaluated gene expression of key genes involved in fatty acid metabolism using QPCR, protein expression of FATP1 and FATP4 using Western blots, and fatty acid transport to address the roles of these two FATP isoforms in fatty acid homeostasis. This work found that …

CHARGE is a phenotypically heterogeneous autosomal dominant disorder recognized as a cohesive syndrome since the identification of CHD7 as a genetic etiology. Classic features include: Coloboma, Heart defects, Atresia choanae, Retarded growth and development, Genitourinary abnormalities, and Ear anomalies and/or deafness. With greater accessibility to genetic analysis, a wider spectrum of features are emerging, and overlap with disorders such as DiGeorge syndrome, Kallmann syndrome, and Hypoparathyroidism Sensorineural Deafness and Renal Disease syndrome, is increasingly evident. We present a patient with a unique manifestation of CHARGE syndrome, including primary hypoparathyroidism and a limb anomaly; to our knowledge, he is also the …

Multi-Scale Patch Dynamics Of Coral Communities: A Cross-Caribbean Investigation Using A Landscape Ecology Approach, Brittany Huntington Oct 2011

Multi-Scale Patch Dynamics Of Coral Communities: A Cross-Caribbean Investigation Using A Landscape Ecology Approach, Brittany Huntington

Open Access Dissertations

The overarching objective of this dissertation was to improve our knowledge of the relationship between seascape heterogeneity and diversity of stony coral assemblages across spatial scales. Coral communities on patch reefs in three regions of the Caribbean were used as a model system to investigating this relationship because patch reef heterogeneity could be readily quantified within the seascape using remote sensing and image analysis techniques. I began with a theoretical approach, exploring the origins of observed species diversity among coral communities at increasing spatial scales. Hierarchical sampling and null models revealed that coral diversity was governed by non-random processes at …

Fastcloning: A Highly Simplified Purification-Free Sequence- And Ligation-Independent Pcr Cloning Method, Chaokun Li, Aiyun Wen, Benchang Shen, Jia Lu, Yao Huang, Yongchang Chang

Translational Neuroscience

Background: Although a variety of methods and expensive kits are available, molecular cloning can be a timeconsuming and frustrating process. Results: Here we report a highly simplified, reliable, and efficient PCR-based cloning technique to insert any DNA fragment into a plasmid vector or into a gene (cDNA) in a vector at any desired position. With this method, the vector and insert are PCR amplified separately, with only 18 cycles, using a high fidelity DNA polymerase. The amplified insert has the ends with ~16-base overlapping with the ends of the amplified vector. After DpnI digestion of the mixture of the amplified …
