Grounded in the inspiration and vision of Challenger astronaut Dr. Ronald E. McNair, this program began at The Center in 1999. The Ronald E. McNair Scholars Institute at UNLV is committed to diversify-ing the ranks of American faculty and research institutions by encour-aging and preparing undergraduate students who are members of un-der-represented groups to purse doctoral studies. The McNair program is designed to prepare undergraduate students for doctoral study and to pursue careers in college teaching. McNair participants are stu-dents from low-income, first-generation backgrounds, and/or members of underrepresented groups in graduate education.

Saturday Morning Television Advertisements Aired On English And Spanish Language Networks Along The Texas-Mexico Border, Cristina S. Barroso, Dianeth Rodriguez, Perla L. Camacho

Journal of Applied Research on Children: Informing Policy for Children at Risk

Objectives: The aim of this content analysis study is to characterize the TV advertisements aired to an at-risk child population along the Texas-Mexico border.

Methods: We characterized the early Saturday morning TV advertisements aired by three broadcast network categories (U.S. English language, U.S. Spanish language, and Mexican Spanish language) in Spring 2010. The number, type (food related vs. non-food related), target audience, and persuasion tactics used were recorded. Advertised foods, based on nutrition content, were categorized as meeting or not meeting current dietary guidelines.

Results: Most commercials were non-food related (82.7%, 397 of 480). The majority of the prepared foods …

Proanthocyanidins, compounds highly concentrated in dietary fruits, such as cranberries and grapes, demonstrate significant cancer prevention potential against many types of cancer. The objective of this study was to evaluate cranberry and grape seed extracts to quantitate and compare their anti-proliferative effects on the most common type of oral cancer, oral squamous cell carcinoma. Using two well-characterized oral squamous cell carcinoma cell lines, CAL27 and SCC25, assays were performed to evaluate the effects of cranberry and grape seed extract on phenotypic behaviors of these oral cancers. Influence Of Substrate Modification And C-Terminal Truncation On The Active Site Structure Of Substrate-Bound Heme Oxygenase From Neisseriae Meningitidis. A 1H Nmr Study, Dungeng Peng, James D. Satterlee, Li Hua Ma, Jerry L. Dallas, Kevin M. Smith, Xuhong Zhang, Michihiko Sato, Gerd N. La Mar

Heme oxygenase (HO), from the pathogenic bacterium N. meningitidis(NmHO), which secures host iron, shares many properties with mammalian HOs but also exhibits some key differences. The crystal structure appears more compact, and the crystal-undetected C-terminus interacts with substrate in solution. The unique nature of substrate-protein, specifically pyrrole-I/II-helix-2, peripheral interactions in NmHO are probed by 2D 1H NMR to reveal unique structural features controlling substrate orientation. The thermodynamics of substrate orientational isomerism are mapped for substrates with individual vinyl → methyl → hydrogen substitutions and with enzyme C-terminal deletions. Disclosed herein are novel methods for screening for compounds useful in treating or preventing tuberculosis. In exemplary embodiments, screening methods are based on the implementation or manipulation of triacylglycerol hydrolase like polypeptides or polynucleotides encoding the same. The methods are useful in identifying agents active against TB infection.

A Lipid-Anchored Snare Supports Membrane Fusion, Hao Xu, Michael Zick, William T. Wickner, Youngsoo Jun

Intracellular membrane fusion requires R-SNAREs and Q-SNAREs to assemble into a four-helical parallel coiled-coil, with their hydrophobic anchors spanning the two apposed membranes. Based on the fusion properties of chemically defined SNARE- proteoliposomes, it has been proposed that the assembly of this helical bundle transduces force through the entire bilayer via the transmembrane SNARE anchor domains to drive fusion. However, an R-SNARE, Nyv1p, with a genetically engineered lipid anchor that spans half of the bilayer suffices for the fusion of isolated vacuoles, although this organelle has other R-SNAREs. Background: In all amyloid diseases, protein aggregates have been implicated fully or partly, in the etiology of the disease. Due to their significance in human pathologies, there have been unprecedented efforts towards physiochemical understanding of aggregation and amyloid formation over the last two decades. An important relation from which hydrodynamic radii of the aggregate is routinely measured is the classic Stokes-Einstein equation. The accurate prediction of water quality is essential for management of reservoirs used for drinking water supply. Since algae are a major source of taste and odor problems in drinking water, understanding and controlling algal growth and production is an important task. Deer Creek Reservoir supplies drinking water for over one million people in northern Utah and has been highly eutrophic in the past. Despite major reductions in external nutrient loading, including phosphorus, seasonal algal blooms in Deer Creek have not decreased to desired levels. Resuspension of sediment has been suggested as a potential source of internal nutrient loading for …

We define a new measure of variable importance of an exposure on a continuous outcome, accounting for potential confounders. The exposure features a reference level x0 with positive mass and a continuum of other levels. For the purpose of estimating it, we fully develop the semi-parametric estimation methodology called targeted minimum loss estimation methodology (TMLE) [van der Laan & Rubin, 2006; van der Laan & Rose, 2011].
