Ƒ(Enlightenment): A Complex Adaptive Systems Model Of Recursive Causality And Human Meaning-Making, Daniel Lambert Jul 2026

Ƒ(Enlightenment): A Complex Adaptive Systems Model Of Recursive Causality And Human Meaning-Making, Daniel Lambert

Dissertations and Theses

Conflict Resolution has developed as a richly interdisciplinary field; however, its theoretical architecture remains fragmented across distinct bodies of scholarship. Existing approaches offer valuable but often isolated explanations of conflict behavior, limiting their ability to account for its complexity. This thesis addresses this limitation by advancing systems science as an organizing framework for integrating these perspectives. It introduces the Human-Complex Adaptive Systems (H-CAS) framework, which conceptualizes human behavior as a recursive adaptive process operating across interconnected regulatory domains. Within this model, conflict is not treated as a discrete event or purely deliberative process, but as an emergent property arising from …

Irrigation Water Conservation And Accelerated Composting: An Exploration Of Environmentally Conscious Practices For Ornamental Horticulture, William James Carson Dunford

LSU Master's Theses

Best management practices for ornamental horticulture include proper management of irrigation water resources and substrate components. The first study investigated the effects of wind speed, wind direction, water pressure, and spray stake height on irrigation efficiency in nursery containers. Results indicated that lower spray stake height positions and lower wind speeds significantly improved the irrigation water volume captured within nursery containers by as much as 18% to 39%. Orienting spray stakes against prevailing winds further enhanced water retention, particularly at 0 and 1 inch heights. In contrast, higher stake elevations led to increased irrigation water loss by as much as …

Environmental Science and Management Faculty Publications and Presentations

The papers in this Research Topic (RT) extend insights on the roles of social relations, institutional arrangements, Indigenous ways of knowing, local knowledge, and decisionmaking participation in shaping water governance and practice. Despite efforts to predict flows and possible hazards, we continue to observe “unintended consequences” when humans interact with waterscapes. What we often learn, we argue, is that what appears “unintended” often reflects a deliberate architecture of exclusion; one that becomes legible only when social power relations are placed at the center of analysis alongside hydrological variables. Doing so may illuminate where injustice complicates intentions and what difference participatory …

Using A Cell Flux Model To Investigate Phytoplankton Growth And Macromolecular Allocation Under Iron Limitation, Margaret Bernish, Meng Gao, Jongsun Kim, Benoit Pasquier

School of Earth, Environmental, & Marine Sciences Faculty Publications

Global biogeochemical models are powerful tools used to interpret observations and empirical data, create hypotheses, and make predictions. Many of these models, however, represent marine microbes as static stoichiometric reactions that convert nutrients into biomass. To better constrain the biological processes that control nutrient cycling in the global ocean, we extend the Cell Flux Model of Phytoplankton to explore the impact of dissolved iron concentration on the allocation of macromolecules and elemental ratios within phytoplankton cells. This model is supported by data obtained from a range of incubation experiments conducted with phytoplankton of varying species and size categories. Model output …

Multitrophic interactions can strongly influence the structure and functioning of ecosystems, but how plant diversity influences the direction and predictability of multitrophic interactions across agricultural and natural ecosystems remains unclear. Using 149 field studies across five continents, we found that, on average, increasing plant diversity tended to exert differential top-down and bottom-up effects in croplands versus grasslands and forests. Organic and nonorganic croplands exhibited 846 and 148% higher invertebrate natural enemy-to-herbivore abundance ratios under increased plant diversity, consistent with top-down control patterns where predator gains cause herbivore declines, enhancing crop outcomes. In grasslands and forests, increasing plant diversity was associated …

Epigenetic Regulators Mll3 And Mll4 Sustain Hematopoietic Stem Cell Multipotency, Helen Chenwei Wang

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) maintain lifelong blood production by balancing self-renewal and multilineage differentiation. They are sustained by networks of transcription factors and epigenetic regulators that prime lineage-specific programs while simultaneously preventing activation of any one program up until the moment of lineage commitment. Despite extensive study, it remains unclear how these complex transcriptional programs are coordinated and how specific epigenetic regulators are deployed to reinforce specific cell fate decisions. Epigenetic regulators, MLL3 and MLL4, play a central role in pluripotent embryonic stem cell fate transitions, but their functions in multipotent somatic stem cells are less well characterized. MLL3 (also …

“No Hen Should Herald The Dawn Lest Misfortune Follow”: Gender, History, And Power Sima Guang’S Comprehensive Mirror, Zoe Ngan

The Thetean: A Student Journal for Scholarly Historical Writing

It was not a particularly notable occasion when Emperor Gaozong 高宗 of the Tang dynasty (AD 618–907) established Wu Zetian 武則天 as a mid-ranked concubine in 654. Emperors, throughout Chinese history, were polygamous rulers who acquired no shortage of concubines per the Rites of Zhou 周禮, an ancient ritual text which proposed that rulers obtain 121 wives and consorts. Wu’s nomination signified the unpredictability of imperial favour and almost certainly did not turn heads when her appointment occurred.

Ai Adoption And Organizational Resilience In Turbulent Environments: The Mediating Role Of Employee Digital Literacy And The Moderating Role Of Innovation-Supportive Climate In The Iraqi Hospitality Sector, Hasan Mutashar Gbouri

Arab Economic and Business Journal

This study examines whether adopting artificial intelligence (AI) strengthens organizational resilience when the operating environment is hostile, and identifies the internal conditions an organization must satisfy before an AI investment translates into resilience. Two mechanisms anchor the argument: employee digital literacy, which carries the effect, and an innovation-supportive climate, which conditions it. We surveyed 400 employees across three premium hotels in Baghdad, Iraq, sampled by operational level, and tested the model with structural equation modeling in AMOS 26.0. The results show that AI adoption alone yields only a modest direct gain in resilience. Slightly more than half of its total …

A Dual- Task Hierarchical Graph Attention Network For Protein-Protein Interaction Sites Prediction, Oras A. Hussein, Eman S. Al-Shamery

Journal of Intelligent Informatics, Networking, and Cybersecurity

In computational structural biology, it is still very hard to accurately find protein-protein interaction (PPI) sites and estimate how strong the interaction would be. In this research, we provide an innovative two-stage deep learning framework that combines residue-level graph representation learning with protein-level regression to achieve a thorough modeling of protein interactions. Protein structures first encoded as residue graphs, with nodes that stand for amino acids and edges that show how close they are to each other in space. To find binding residues, a deep residual Graph Attention Network v2 (GATv2) uses multi-head attention, residual connections, and Jumping Knowledge aggregation …

Thermodynamic Studies To Determine The Impact Of Cooa Heme On Its Structure And Function, Micah C. Israel, Robert Clark Jul 2026

Thermodynamic Studies To Determine The Impact Of Cooa Heme On Its Structure And Function, Micah C. Israel, Robert Clark

Summer Interdisciplinary Research Symposium

This project builds upon the Clark research team's goal of understanding how the transcription factor CooA (carbon monoxide oxidation activator) activates its DNA-binding function upon changes at its heme domain (i.e., an iron porphyrin complex) when bound to carbon monoxide (CO). This research has broader implications, as analogous gas-sensing proteins are potential drug targets. Previous work showed that replacing heme with a different metalloporphyrin activated DNA-binding even without carbon monoxide. However, it is poorly understood how these changes at the heme domain activate DNA-binding, which takes place remotely. This study will investigate  how the heme group affects CooA's structure by …
