Asian American Literature: Discourses & Pedagogies

This paper explores the troping of racial categories and mixed race bodies in Ruth Ozeki’s All Over Creation (2003) and My Year of Meats (1999). Moving through both transnational and local space, Ozeki’s writes an ecocritical pastoral text in order to resist representations of people of mixed race stemming from nineteenth century racial theory. Drawing attention to the consumption of food within and across national borders, whether genetically modified potatoes or hormone-infused beef, Ozeki simultaneously highlights the uncritical consumption of the language of biology around the mixed race body. Nepal is considered a high population density developing country and a very high population density per unit of agriculture land. Comparative analysis with the region shows that the Bangladesh and Nepal have the lowest land to labor ratio (0.22 and 0.29 respectively), compared to India (0.61), Sri Lanka (0.51) and Pakistan (0.81). Small holding size of high land fragmentation in Nepal is one of the main reported causes of poverty in rural area. Tourists’ Willingness To Pay For Entry To The Annapurna Conservation Area, Nepal, C. Wrobel, A. Kozlowski

Himalayan Policy Research Conference

This study seeks to determine international tourists’ willingness to pay (WTP) for entry fees in the Annapurna Conservation Area (ACA), Nepal. Data were collected in the ACA from May to June of 2011where 101 international tourists participated in a contingent valuation survey. A modified New Environmental Paradigm scale, with both attitudinal and behavioural statements, was utilized to assess the influence of environmental commitment on WTP. The analysis suggests that the rating of trekking as the most important motive for entering the ACA was the only variable with a potentially important influence on WTP for the entrance fee into the ACA. …

Asian American Literature: Discourses & Pedagogies

Racial minorities in the U.S. are often tormented by the tension between the corporeal and the ontological, with the former experienced as confining and the latter expansive. Such ambivalence often expresses itself in one's relationship with food. Here I propose to illustrate how Jacques Lacan's psychoanalytical theory on desire can assist us in understanding ethnicity as a bodily performance, which I venture to call an embodied ontology, applying this concept to Bich Minh Nguyen's Stealing Buddha's Dinner (2007).

Fathers' attendance at childbirth is almost universal in the United States, but few researchers have addressed the role that males play in childbirth decision making. The number of technological interventions available to birthing women is increasing, as is the utilization of those interventions. The degree to which women choose or agree to these interventions plays a major role in individual and societal health outcomes. Therefore, health care policy makers and educators must find ways to help childbearing couples navigate the complex maze of decisions related to childbirth. Justine Critzer, a Virginia woman, died in 2006. She died intestate—without a will—and had no close surviving relatives: No spouse, no children, and no living parents. Her closest biological relatives were two nephews and a niece—the children of Critzer’s biological sister, Mary Frances Kummer. This situation raises an interesting question: Who should inherit Ms. Critzer’s estate?

According to the recent ruling of the Virginia Supreme Court in Kummer v. Donak, Critzer’s niece and nephews are not her legal heirs, despite their being her closest surviving biological relatives. Their legal tie to Critzer—and the right to inherit from her estate—was …

Repeated Sprint Performance In Male And Female College Athletes Matched For Vo2max Relative To Fat Free Mass, Amanda L. Mageean, Ryan P. Alexander, Constance M. Mier

International Journal of Exercise Science

The purpose of this study was to examine gender differences in repeated sprint exercise (RSE) performance among male and female athletes matched for VO2max relative to FFM (VO2max FFM). Thirty nine male and female college athletes performed a graded exercise test for VO2max and hydrostatic weighing to determine FFM. From the results, 11 pairs of males and females matched for VO2max FFM (mean ± SD; 58.3 ± 4.3 and 58.9 ± 4.6 ml.kg FFM-1.min-1; men and women, respectively) were identified. Governors State University Tuesday celebrated a new era in science education with a ceremony marking the start of a $22.6 million renovation project. The project will bring world-class laboratories and classrooms to the University Park campus’ science buildings.

GSU President Elaine P. Maimon and members of the Board of Trustees symbolically “tore down the walls” of the university’s E and F science wing by removing paneling from the walls. They were joined by more than 150 students, university employees, community members, and dignitaries.

The Anchor began in 1887 and was first issued weekly in 1914. Covering national and campus news alike, Hope College’s student-run newspaper has grown over the years to encompass over two-dozen editors, reporters, and staff. For much of The Anchor's history, the latest issue was distributed across campus each Wednesday throughout the academic school year (with few exceptions). In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

Past literature has mostly discussed port selection. However, within a given region, any port which meets a carrier’s threshold conditions is eligible for consideration, and a terminal operator at any of these ports is a candidate for entering into a contract with the carrier. The choice is not restricted to terminal operators at a single given port. Thus the choice of terminal operator between ports within a given region is an important issue in the decision-making process and has rarely been addressed in the literature. For Week 5 of the RLC, the students traveled to Calvary Cemetery with Brother Don Geiger of UD's Biology Department and Susan Byrnes, the director of ArtStreet. Brother Don discussed land use and its impacts with the students. Standing on top of a hanging prairie, the class was able to see various examples of land use including a land fill, a highway, and waste management.
