Competing Cultural Worldviews In The United States: A Phenomenological Examination Of The Essential Core Elements Of Transnationalism And Transculturalism, Mark P. Orbe, Darlene K. Drummond Nov 2011

Competing Cultural Worldviews In The United States: A Phenomenological Examination Of The Essential Core Elements Of Transnationalism And Transculturalism, Mark P. Orbe, Darlene K. Drummond

The Qualitative Report

The objective of this study was to explore inductively the complex ways in which everyday discourse reflects larger - and often competing - cultural worldviews. A phenomenological framework was used to analyze transcripts generated through 13 focus group discussions involving 100 individuals. This particular analysis highlights how individuals who adopted a transnational worldview worked to transform cultural divisions through criticism of existing labels that failed to capture the multicultural nature of their identifies. Alternatively, individuals who adopted a transcultural worldview worked to transcend traditional cultural divisions through a rejection of traditional labels that worked against one unified social identity. The …

This thesis is focussed on the design and development of liquid crystal based tunable photonic devices for applications in optical communications and optical sensing, with an emphasis on all-fiber device configuration. The infiltration of liquid crystals into photonic crystal fiber provides a suitable common platform to design and fabricate simple and compact all-fiber tunable photonic devices which can be easily integrated with optical fiber networks and sensing systems. Based on the infiltration of liquid crystals – materials with high dielectric anisotropy, into photonic crystal fibers a common platform is developed to address the need for electronically tunable photonic devices with …

Treatment Outcomes And Medication Compliance For Children And Adolescents, 30 Days Post-Discharge From An In-Patient Psychiatric Hospital, Jan Talley Nov 2011

Treatment Outcomes And Medication Compliance For Children And Adolescents, 30 Days Post-Discharge From An In-Patient Psychiatric Hospital, Jan Talley

Faculty and Staff Publications

A variety of authors have suggested that children and adolescents are at risk for serious adverse health outcomes because of a lack of compliance with medication regimens. A lack of compliance includes taking less or more medication than prescribed, and taking medication at the wrong times. One study that examined the medication compliance of 81 students who were 10 years of age or older, and were enrolled in a school-based health center, determined that only 45 students (56%) filled the prescription given to them by the doctor. Of those students who filled the prescription, 76% reported that they always took …

Spinal Locomotor Inputs To Individually Identified Reticulospinal Neurons In The Lamprey, James T. Buchanan Nov 2011

Spinal Locomotor Inputs To Individually Identified Reticulospinal Neurons In The Lamprey, James T. Buchanan

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Locomotor feedback signals from the spinal cord to descending brain stem neurons were examined in the lamprey using the uniquely identifiable reticulospinal neurons, the Müller and Mauthner cells. The same identified reticulospinal neurons were recorded in several preparations, under reduced conditions, to address whether an identified reticulospinal neuron shows similar locomotor-related oscillation timing from animal to animal and whether these timing signals can differ significantly from other identified reticulospinal neurons. Intracellular recordings of membrane potential in identified neurons were made in an isolated brain stem-spinal cord preparation with a high-divalent cation solution on the brain stem to suppress indirect neural …

Sensing With The Motor Cortex, Nicholas G. Hatsopoulos, Aaron J. Suminski Nov 2011

Sensing With The Motor Cortex, Nicholas G. Hatsopoulos, Aaron J. Suminski

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

The primary motor cortex is a critical node in the network of brain regions responsible for voluntary motor behavior. It has been less appreciated, however, that the motor cortex exhibits sensory responses in a variety of modalities including vision and somatosensation. We review current work that emphasizes the heterogeneity in sensorimotor responses in the motor cortex and focus on its implications for cortical control of movement as well as for brain-machine interface development.

Expression Of Cancer Stem Cell Biomarkers In Male Breast Cancer, Ping Gong, Md, Juan P. Palazzo, Md

Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Faculty Papers

Male breast cancer is an uncommon disease, representing <1% of all breast cancer diagnoses. The prognostic factors and expression of molecular markers in male breast carcinomas are similar to female cancer. Cancer stem cell (CSC)s have been associated with tumor aggressiveness and drug resistance. CSCs are characterized by CD44 and/or ALDH1 expression. We investigated their expression in male breast cancer.

The Ringed Crayfish, Orconectes Neglectus Neglectus, In Nebraska With A Revision Of Its Distributional Range, Steven C. Schainost

Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies

Collections of crayfishes in Nebraska have yielded much new information on the distribution of the ringed crayfish, Orconectes neglectus neglectus. The distributional range of this species had been described as southwestern Missouri and northwestern Arkansas with extensions into Kansas and Oklahoma. Isolated, disjunct populations in northeastern Colorado, southwestern Nebraska, and northwestern and east-central Kansas were thought to be relict populations. Between 1995 and 2009, collections of crayfishes were made throughout Nebraska using various techniques including seining, trapping, dip-netting, and handgrabbing. To date, the ringed crayfish has been found in 56 streams in eight of Nebraska’s 13 river basins. In …

Seed Production With Insect Herbivory And Fungal Occurrence For The Rare Penstemon Haydenii, Kay L Kottas, James Stubbendieck, Erin E. Blankenship, Jay B. Fitzgerald Nov 2011

Seed Production With Insect Herbivory And Fungal Occurrence For The Rare Penstemon Haydenii, Kay L Kottas, James Stubbendieck, Erin E. Blankenship, Jay B. Fitzgerald

Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies

We quantified seed production and viability, floral herbivory and fungal infection on blowout penstemon (Penstemon haydenii S. Watson), an endangered species of the Nebraska Sandhills, USA, in order to determine the potential for perpetuation of this, and possibly other short-lived, rare perennials of fragmented habitats. Over three years, the number of seeds per infructescence averaged 518 (SE 29.01). Plants produced an average of 1398 seeds. Seed viability of 38% reduced reproductive potential to 531 viable seeds per plant. Plants in multiple blowout sites in two counties were assigned to one of four treatments: insecticide, fungicide, both, or neither (control). …

Assessment Of Water Quality And Response Rate Of Zooplankton In A Nebraska “Barrow Pit” After Rotenone Application, Brian C. Peterson, Byron W. Sellers, Nicolas J. Fryda, Keith D. Koupal

Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies

Understanding the extent and depth of rotenone impacts on all trophic levels is essential to effective aquatic management. We examined changes in water quality tenets and zooplankton communities following the establishment of 3 ppm rotenone concentration in a Nebraska barrow pit. Dissolved oxygen initially decreased 57% and subsequently increased 298% the week following rotenone application. Turbidity decreased from 25.8 FAU ± 0.80 pre-treatment to 6.6 FAU ± 0.98 one year later. Total zooplankton (0.17/L ± 0.03) were limited prior to rotenone application and absent for the following 3 weeks. One year later the total number of zooplankton increased 1024%, and …

Predatory insects can provide natural pest control by eating unwanted pests. Insect predators are one factor that help maintain pest populations at non-damaging levels, an action known as biological control. By conserving predatory insect populations, plants can be protected from pest attack and excessive damage.

Abca12-Mediated Lipid Transport And Snap29-Dependent Trafficking Of Lamellar Granules Are Crucial For Epidermal Morphogenesis In A Zebrafish Model Of Ichthyosis., Qiaoli Li, Michael Frank, Masashi Akiyama, Shiu-Ying Ho, Hiroshi Shimizu, Christine Thisse, Bernard Thisse, Eli Sprecher, Jouni Uitto Nov 2011

Abca12-Mediated Lipid Transport And Snap29-Dependent Trafficking Of Lamellar Granules Are Crucial For Epidermal Morphogenesis In A Zebrafish Model Of Ichthyosis., Qiaoli Li, Michael Frank, Masashi Akiyama, Shiu-Ying Ho, Hiroshi Shimizu, Christine Thisse, Bernard Thisse, Eli Sprecher, Jouni Uitto

Department of Dermatology and Cutaneous Biology Faculty Papers

Zebrafish (Danio rerio) can serve as a model system to study heritable skin diseases. The skin is rapidly developed during the first 5-6 days of embryonic growth, accompanied by expression of skin-specific genes. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) of wild-type zebrafish at day 5 reveals a two-cell-layer epidermis separated from the underlying collagenous stroma by a basement membrane with fully developed hemidesmosomes. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) reveals an ordered surface contour of keratinocytes with discrete microridges. To gain insight into epidermal morphogenesis, we have employed morpholino-mediated knockdown of the abca12 and snap29 genes, which are crucial for secretion of lipids and …

Temperature, Recreational Fishing And Diapause Egg Connections: Dispersal Of Spiny Water Fleas (Bythotrephes Longimanus), W. Charles Kerfoot, Foad Yousef, Martin M. Hobmeier, Ryan P. Maki, S. Taylor Jarnagin, James H. Churchill

Michigan Tech Publications, Part 1

The spiny water flea (Bythotrephes longimanus) is spreading from Great Lakes coastal waters into northern inland lakes within a northern temperature-defined latitudinal band. Colonization of Great Lakes coastal embayments is assisted by winds and seiche surges, yet rapid inland expansion across the northern states comes through an overland process. The lack of invasions at Isle Royale National Park contrasts with rapid expansion on the nearby Keweenaw Peninsula. Both regions have comparable geology, lake density, and fauna, but differ in recreational fishing boat access, visitation, and containment measures. Tail spines protect Bythotrephes against young of the year, but not larger fish, …

Western Tentiform Leafminer Phyllonorycter Elmaella, Diane G. Alston, Michael E. Reding Nov 2011

Western Tentiform Leafminer Phyllonorycter Elmaella, Diane G. Alston, Michael E. Reding

All Current Publications

Western tentiform leafminer populations can vary tremendously between years or even between generations within a single year. A large population in Utah's commercial fruit districts hasn't been observed since the early 2000s. Increasing resistance to organophosphate insecticides and variable effectiveness of at least six parasitic wasp species that attack the leafminer can influence the population size.

Sex Differences In Cooperation: A Meta-Analytic Review Of Social Dilemmas, Daniel Balliet, Norman P. Li, Shane J. Macfarlan, Mark Van Vugt Nov 2011

Sex Differences In Cooperation: A Meta-Analytic Review Of Social Dilemmas, Daniel Balliet, Norman P. Li, Shane J. Macfarlan, Mark Van Vugt

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

Although it is commonly believed that women are kinder and more cooperative than men, there is conflicting evidence for this assertion. Current theories of sex differences in social behavior suggest that it may be useful to examine in what situations men and women are likely to differ in cooperation. Here, we derive predictions from both sociocultural and evolutionary perspectives on context-specific sex differences in cooperation, and we conduct a unique meta-analytic study of 272 effect sizes—sampled across 50 years of research—on social dilemmas to examine several potential moderators. The overall average effect size is not statistically different from zero (d …

Unsupervised Multiple Kernel Learning, Jinfeng Zhuang, Jialei Wang, Steven C. H. Hoi, Xiangyang Lan Nov 2011

Unsupervised Multiple Kernel Learning, Jinfeng Zhuang, Jialei Wang, Steven C. H. Hoi, Xiangyang Lan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Traditional multiple kernel learning (MKL) algorithms are essentially supervised learning in the sense that the kernel learning task requires the class labels of training data. However, class labels may not always be available prior to the kernel learning task in some real world scenarios, e.g., an early preprocessing step of a classification task or an unsupervised learning task such as dimension reduction. In this paper, we investigate a problem of Unsupervised Multiple Kernel Learning (UMKL), which does not require class labels of training data as needed in a conventional multiple kernel learning task. Since a kernel essentially defines pairwise similarity …

Learning Human Emotion Patterns For Modeling Virtual Humans, Shu Feng, Ah-Hwee Tan Nov 2011

Learning Human Emotion Patterns For Modeling Virtual Humans, Shu Feng, Ah-Hwee Tan

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Emotion modeling is a crucial part in modeling virtual humans. Although various emotion models have been proposed, most of them focus on designing specific appraisal rules. As there is no unified framework for emotional appraisal, the appraisal variables have to be defined beforehand and evaluated in a subjective way. In this paper, we propose an emotion model based on machine learning methods by taking the following position: an emotion model should mirror actual human emotion in the real world and connect tightly with human inner states, such as drives, motivations and personalities. Specifically, a self-organizing neural model called Emotional Appraisal …
