A Qualitative Investigation Of The Strategies Used By A Sample Of Native American Older Adults To Cope With Race-Related Stressors, Rita Haidle Billow
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
The present study explored how racism-related stress was characterized by respondents and investigated the ways in which these respondents coped with this type of stress. Using content analysis, four broad themes of race-related stress emerged: 1) Institutional, 2) Intergroup, 3) Bicultural, and 4) Intragroup. Race-related coping strategies, which included the cognitive, emotional and behavioral strategies respondents used to reduce and/or manage their experiences of racism, were also explored. Eight overarching coping strategies were described: 1) Taking action, 2) Acceptance, 3) Escaping, 4) Collective coping, 5) Meaning making, 6) Affective coping, 7) "Returning to what Indians did before", and 8) Creative …
Aesthetic Appreciation Of The Natural Environment: Scientific Knowledge & The Extension From Aesthetics To Ethics, John K. Hays
Aesthetic Appreciation Of The Natural Environment: Scientific Knowledge & The Extension From Aesthetics To Ethics, John K. Hays
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Aesthetics has played an influential role in how we ascribe value to the environment. Yet, it seems that if we are to take the beauty of the natural world seriously, certain aesthetics judgments must be better than others. The scientific cognitive model posits that the natural world must be interpreted through an understanding of biological and geological categories, which are provided by scientific knowledge and common sense. While there are clearly merits to this model, it is not without its own set of problems and limitations. These problems exist in both the model itself and with its extension to environmental …

Age Determination Of The Glassy-Winged Sharpshooter, Homalodisca Vitripennis, Using Wing Pigmentation, Chris Timmons, Aaron Hassell, Isabelle Lauziere, Blake Bextine
Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations
A red pigment is contained in the wing veins of the glassy-winged sharpshooter, Homalodisca vitripennis (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae). This insect is the main vector of the plant-pathogenic bacterium Xylella fastidiosa Wells (Xanthomonadales: Xanthomonadaceae), the causal agent of Pierce's disease of grapevines. Over the course of the H. vitripennis lifespan, the red pigment darkens and eventually becomes brown/black in color. These pigments are believed to be pheomelanin and eumelanin, respectively. The age of H. vitripennis can be determined by calculating the amount of red pigment found in the wings by analyzing high resolution wing photographs with image analysis software. In this study, …

The Effect Of Exopolymers On The Compressibility And Shear Strength Of Kaolinite, Rick Alton Nugent
The Effect Of Exopolymers On The Compressibility And Shear Strength Of Kaolinite, Rick Alton Nugent
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Erosion and subsidence threaten coastal infrastructure and natural habitats throughout the coastal United States, and this threat is especially significant along the Louisiana coastline since wetland clays are generally weak and highly compressible. Hydraulic pumping of dredged sediment is a common method for combating damage caused by erosion and subsidence, but the high water content slurry deposited is very compressible with low shear strength. Although conventional soil amendments are effective for reducing compressibility and increasing shear strength, these stabilizers are often caustic or toxic, making them too risky to use. Exopolymers, however, have the potential to improve sediment stability without …
Rapid Identification Of Oil Contaminated Soils Using Visible Near Infrared Diffuse Reflectance Spectroscopy, Somsubhra Chakraborty
Rapid Identification Of Oil Contaminated Soils Using Visible Near Infrared Diffuse Reflectance Spectroscopy, Somsubhra Chakraborty
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Initially, 46 petroleum contaminated and non-contaminated soil samples were collected and scanned using visible near-infrared diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (VisNIR DRS) at three combinations of moisture content and pretreatment. The VisNIR spectra of soil samples were used to predict total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) content using partial least squares (PLS) regression and boosted regression tree (BRT) models. The field-moist intact scan proved best for predicting TPH content with a validation r2 of 0.64 and relative percent difference (RPD) of 1.70. Those 46 samples were used to calibrate a penalized spline (PS) model. Subsequently, the PS model was used to predict soil TPH …
Dynamic Measurements With Scanning Probe Microscopy: Surface Studies Using Nanostructured Test Platforms Of Metalloporphyrins, Nanoparticles And Amyloid Fibrils, Wilson K. Serem
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
A hybrid imaging mode for characterization of magnetic nanomaterials has been developed, using atomic force microscopy (AFM) combined with electromagnetic sample actuation. Instead of using a coated AFM probe as a magnetic sensor; our strategy is to use a nonmagnetic probe with contact mode AFM to characterize the vibration of magnetic and superparamagnetic nanomaterials responding to the flux of an AC electromagnetic field. We refer to the hybrid imaging mode as magnetic sample modulation (MSM-AFM). An oscillating magnetic field is produced by applying an AC current to a wire coil solenoid placed under the sample stage for tuning selected parameters …
The Tick Response To Rickettsial Dissemination During Typical And Atypical Rickettsial Infection, Piyanate Sunyakumthorn
The Tick Response To Rickettsial Dissemination During Typical And Atypical Rickettsial Infection, Piyanate Sunyakumthorn
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Ticks are the only disease vectors for spotted fever group (SFG) Rickettsia which are obligate intracellular bacteria belonging to the genus Rickettsia. In nature, ticks maintain the infection of SFG Rickettsia via vertical and horizontal transmission. However, the prevalence of rickettsial transmission is limited to certain species of ticks, and this limitation is known as a specific tick/Rickettsia relationship. Due to the continuous increase of tick-borne rickettsial disease cases in the United States, which contrasts with very low prevalence of Rickettsia in tick vectors, the study of vector competence of tick to Rickettsia is needed in order to understand the …
Numerical Studies Of Flow In Porous Media Using An Unstructured Approach, Nathan Matthew Lane
Numerical Studies Of Flow In Porous Media Using An Unstructured Approach, Nathan Matthew Lane
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Flow and transport in porous media is relevant to many areas of engineering and science including groundwater hydrology and the recovery of oil and gas. Porous materials are characterized by the unique shape and connectivity of the internal void structures which give rise to a large range in macroscopic transport properties. Historically an inability to accurately describe the internal pore-structure has prevented detailed study of the role of pore structure on transport. In recent decades however, the combination of high resolution imaging technologies with computational modeling has seen the development of fundamental pore-scale techniques for studying flow in porous media. …
The Effect Of Habitat Change On Nutrient Removal In The Atchafalaya River Basin, Louisiana, Amy E. Scaroni
The Effect Of Habitat Change On Nutrient Removal In The Atchafalaya River Basin, Louisiana, Amy E. Scaroni
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
The Mississippi and Atchafalaya rivers are the major sources of freshwater and nutrients to the Gulf of Mexico. Increased nutrient loads from these rivers exacerbate eutrophication in coastal receiving waters and contribute to the large area of hypoxia that develops seasonally in the Gulf. Levees along the Mississippi River have reduced contact between the river and the historic floodplain; this limits the ability of floodplain wetlands to naturally mitigate excess nutrients. However, the Atchafalaya River diverges from the Mississippi 217 km from the Gulf and enters a large river floodplain with a widely spaced levee system. This enhances the ability …
Hmo2, A Yeast Hmgb Protein That Preferentially Binds To Dna Ends, Sreerupa Ray
Hmo2, A Yeast Hmgb Protein That Preferentially Binds To Dna Ends, Sreerupa Ray
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
DNA damage is a common hazard that all cells have to combat. Saccharomyces cerevisiae HMO2 is a high mobility group protein (HMGB) that is a component of the chromatin remodeling complex INO80, which is involved in double strand break repair. I show here using DNA end-joining and exonuclease protection assays that HMO2 binds preferentially to DNA ends. While HMO2 binds DNA with both blunt and cohesive ends, the sequence of a single stranded overhang significantly affects binding, supporting the conclusion that HMO2 recognizes features at DNA ends. Analysis of the effect of duplex length on the ability of HMO2 to …
Fabrication Of Organosilane Nanostructures As Selective Sites For Surface Chemical Reactions, Kathie Lee Lusker
Fabrication Of Organosilane Nanostructures As Selective Sites For Surface Chemical Reactions, Kathie Lee Lusker
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
Naturally self-assembled mesospheres provide a practical route for controlling the arrangement of materials on surfaces at the nanoscale. Periodic arrays of well-defined nanostructures can be produced with different nanomaterials and interpattern spacings. Results presented in this dissertation demonstrate particle lithography methods developed for fabricating arrays of organosilane nanostructures. Surfaces were designed for the selective deposition of polymers and nanoparticles to produce multicomponent nanopatterns. The approaches for surface patterning provide new directions for studying surface chemistry at the molecular-level, and have practical application for emerging photovoltaic thin film technologies. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) provides unique capabilities for molecular visualization and ultrasensitive …

Why I Can't Love The Homemade Semantic Web, Jason Bengtson
Why I Can't Love The Homemade Semantic Web, Jason Bengtson
Publications
Almost all information professionals agree that the web needs to move to a semantic structure. While work is proceeding in this area, movements to get individual web authors to use semantic markup tools have also been on the rise. This author argues that such efforts are ill conceived and he proposes an automated alternative.

Weighted Scores Method For Regression Models With Dependent Data, Aristidis K. Nikoloulopoulos, Harry Joe, N. Rao Chaganty
Weighted Scores Method For Regression Models With Dependent Data, Aristidis K. Nikoloulopoulos, Harry Joe, N. Rao Chaganty
Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications
There are copula-based statistical models in the literature for regression with dependent data such as clustered and longitudinal overdispersed counts, for which parameter estimation and inference are straightforward. For situations where the main interest is in the regression and other univariate parameters and not the dependence, we propose a "weighted scores method", which is based on weighting score functions of the univariate margins. The weight matrices are obtained initially fitting a discretized multivariate normal distribution, which admits a wide range of dependence. The general methodology is applied to negative binomial regression models. Asymptotic and small-sample efficiency calculations show that our …
Putting The X In Biology: A Review Of The Mathematics Of Life, John Adam
Putting The X In Biology: A Review Of The Mathematics Of Life, John Adam
Mathematics & Statistics Faculty Publications
(First Paragraph) Charles Darwin's 1859 work On the Origin of the Species contained no equations. But that does not mean mathematics has no role to play in the science of life; in fact, the field of biomathematics is burgeoning and has been for several decades. Ian Stewart's new book does an admirable job of unfolding the mathematics undergirding so much of the research being carried out today in the many fields that comprise the subject of biology. Stewart sets the context by noting five great revolutions that have changed the way scientists think about life. These five revolutions are: (i) …

Infectious diseases ranging from the common cold to cholera affect our society physically, emotionally, ecologically, and economically. Yet despite their importance and impact, there remains a lack of effective teaching materials for epidemiology and disease ecology in K-12, undergraduate, and graduate curricula [2]. To address this deficit, we've developed a classroom lesson with three instructional goals: (1) Familiarize students on basic concepts of infectious disease ecology; (2) Introduce students to a classic compartmental model and its applications in epidemiology; (3) Demonstrate the application and importance of mathematical modeling as a tool in biology. The instructional strategy uses a game-based mathematical …

A large diversity of Mycobacterium spp. has been isolated from striped bass Morone saxatilis in Chesapeake Bay, USA. The new species M. shottsii and M. pseudoshottsii are the dominant isolates, while the classical fish pathogen M. marinum is found much less frequently. M. fortuitum and M. chelonae, other Mycobacterium spp. known to commonly infect fishes, have not yet been aseptically isolated from striped bass within Chesapeake Bay. While M. pseudoshottsii and M. shottsii have been phenotypically and genotypically characterized, other less common mycobacterial isolates have not. In the present study, we describe 17 photochromogenic isolates from Chesapeake …

Fourteen marine species in the Gulf of Mexico are protected by the US Endangered Species Act, the Marine Mammal Protection Act, and the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. As the British Petroleum oil spill recovery and remediation proceed, species internationally recognized as having an elevated risk of extinction should also receive priority for protection and restoration efforts, whether or not they have specific legal protection. Forty additional marine species-unprotected by any federal laws-occur in the Gulf and are listed as threatened on the International Union for Conservation of Nature's (IUCN) Red List. The Red List assessment process scientifically evaluates species' global …
