The Origins And Expansion Of The Soviet Union’S Military-Industrial Complex, Noah B. Heminger Jan 2026

The Origins And Expansion Of The Soviet Union’S Military-Industrial Complex, Noah B. Heminger

All Master's Theses

This thesis explores the way in which the “Soviet Military-Industrial Complex” that dominated the Soviet Union’s economy in the latter half of its existence came into existence and what forces caused its expansion. The first force was the ideological and strategic beliefs and assumptions of the leadership and military planners which held that the USSR would always be in existential danger. The second was Stalin’s “Revolution from Above” which broke down the barriers economically and politically that resisted the militarization of politics, economics, and society. And the final force was the stresses of World War II which caused the Soviet …

Examination Of The Effects Aesthetic Enrichment And Music Have On Well-Being And Task Performance In A Workplace Simulation, Emily Budik

Theses and Dissertations

Workplace environments are often designed with a focus on efficiency, yet emerging research suggests that environmental features such as aesthetic enrichment and music may influence employee well-being and performance. The present study examined whether visual aesthetic enrichment and auditory stimulation through music could improve well-being, reduce stress, and enhance task performance within a simulated workplace task. Participants completed a 30-minute in-basket task under one of four conditions: a control environment, music only, aesthetic enrichment only, or a combined aesthetic enrichment and music condition. Measures of stress, well-being, and task performance were collected following task completion. Results indicated that neither aesthetic …

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Platanthera is among the most diverse genera of orchids in north temperate regions, with high species diversity in Asia and North America. Despite many ecological studies in this group, little is known about its genomic diversity. Here, we report the newly annotated chloroplast genomes from six species in subgenus Limnorchis from North America and compare them with plastomes published for Platanthera species from Asia and Europe. We found that the plastomes of species in subg. Limnorchis are among the smallest reported for Platanthera thus far. While major structural differences were not detected in the newly sequenced species, ndh genes were …

Pt/Zno-Decorated Laser-Induced Graphene For Nonenzymatic Glucose Monitoring Under Physiological Conditions, Reagan Aviha, Gymama Slaughter

Center for Bioelectronics Publications

Diabetes continues to impose significant global health and economic burdens, driving the demand for robust, enzyme-free glucose sensors capable of reliable operation under physiological conditions. Here, we report the development of a high-performance nonenzymatic glucose sensor based on laser-induced graphene (LIG) modified with zinc oxide (ZnO) and platinum (Pt) nanostructures. ZnO was electrodeposited onto LIG with modulation potential and deposition duration systematically optimized. The ZnO/LIG electrodes were characterized electrochemically using potassium ferricyanide and evaluated for glucose oxidation in phosphate-buffered solution. Subsequent electrodeposition of Pt under analogous optimized conditions yielded a ternary Pt/ZnO/LIG architecture with enhanced electrocatalytic activity. Sensor performance was …

Daily Rhythms In Psychosocial Stress, Sleep, And Mood: A Multimethod Approach To Transdiagnostic Psychopathology Risk And Intervention, Gabriel Gilmore Jan 2026

Daily Rhythms In Psychosocial Stress, Sleep, And Mood: A Multimethod Approach To Transdiagnostic Psychopathology Risk And Intervention, Gabriel Gilmore

Theses and Dissertations--Psychology

Rhythms are central to nearly every core physiological and psychological process and have profound influences on overall health and well-being, particularly in the context of mood disorders. This dissertation emphasizes a rhythm-centered framework for understanding transdiagnostic psychopathology, proposing that the temporal organization of psychosocial stress, sleep, and mood provides crucial information for the development and treatment of mood disorder symptomology. Current literature relies primarily on mean symptom levels, overlooking day-to-day patterns in psychosocial experiences. To address this key methodological gap, three studies are examined. Study 1 develops and validates the Psychosocial Stress Regularity Measure (PSRM), a brief single-item measure of …

The Relationship Between Estradiol And Progesterone Concentration Levels, Alcohol Consumption, And Inhibitory Control, Layne Elizabeth Robinson B.S. Jan 2026

The Relationship Between Estradiol And Progesterone Concentration Levels, Alcohol Consumption, And Inhibitory Control, Layne Elizabeth Robinson B.S.

Theses and Dissertations--Psychology

Alcohol use is increasing among women, with estimates for binge drinking having risen to levels similar to those seen in men. Despite this trend, sex differences regarding mechanisms of alcohol consumption have seldom been investigated. Our group and others have found evidence to suggest that ovarian sex hormones are associated with alcohol consumption and mechanisms that might be related to alcohol consumption, such as executive function deficits. The current study sought to extend this prior research in a larger sample with higher drinking rates and more rigorous methods, and to explore inhibitory control associations with drinking. Across the two samples …

Effects Of Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation On Urge During Cue-Exposure To Body-Focused Repetitive Behaviors, Hannah Rebecca Wild Jan 2026

Effects Of Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation On Urge During Cue-Exposure To Body-Focused Repetitive Behaviors, Hannah Rebecca Wild

Theses and Dissertations--Psychology

Body-focused repetitive behaviors (BFRBs) are unnecessary, repetitive grooming behaviors linked to abnormalities in sensory and reward processing, as well as top-down inhibition. The left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (dlPFC) is implicated in these processes and plays a key role in cravings among individuals facing addiction. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) targeting the left dlPFC shows promise in reducing craving for addictive substances. Despite phenomenological similarities between BFRBs and addictive disorders, no controlled studies have examined tDCS’s effect on BFRBs. This study used a randomized, double-blind design to examine whether a single session of anodal multifocal tDCS targeting the left dlPFC reduced …

Laudato Si' And The Limits Of Law: Reflections On The Vocation To Protect Integral Ecology, Lucia A. Silecchia Jan 2026

Laudato Si' And The Limits Of Law: Reflections On The Vocation To Protect Integral Ecology, Lucia A. Silecchia

Scholarly Articles

In 2015, Pope Francis’s widely anticipated encyclical, Laudato Si’: On Care for Our Common Home, was released. It was a wide-ranging commentary on the state of the world, with much to say to economists, ecologists, farmers, theologians, educators, architects, artists, and pastors. It may, however, have been of particular interest to lawyers eager to see what Pope Francis had to say about law’s particular role.

On this question, Laudato Si’ painted an inconsistent portrait of law’s suitability to this task. Pope Francis spoke passionately about the need for law at all levels to tackle the complexities of caring for our …

Let's Not Talk About Sex? Exploring Sexual Pain In Orthodox Jewish Women, Zehava Gros Schwartzblatt M.S. Jan 2026

Let's Not Talk About Sex? Exploring Sexual Pain In Orthodox Jewish Women, Zehava Gros Schwartzblatt M.S.

Selected Full Text Dissertations, 2011-

Vaginismus, a genito-pelvic pain disorder characterized by involuntary muscle contraction that renders vaginal penetration painful or impossible, is estimated to affect between 1% and 7% of women worldwide (Laskowska & Gronowski, 2022). Although commonly conceptualized as a medical condition, growing evidence suggests that its etiology is significantly shaped by sociocultural and religious factors (Tugrul & Kabakci, 1997). In particular, belief systems that associate sexuality with immorality, sin, or shame (Cotter, 2015; Lewis et al., 2004), combined with limited sexual education, stigma, and misinformation (Nasserzadeh, 2015), may contribute to the development and maintenance of the disorder. These dynamics are especially salient …

All Works

Regular hookah smoking (Reg-HS) has become a major global public health issue, linked to significant health risks, including kidney damage. A less frequent pattern of use, known as occasional hookah smoking (Occ-HS), is also common; however, there has been little progress in understanding the direct impact of Occ-HS on kidneys. To investigate how varying frequencies of HS inhalation affect the kidney, we exposed mice to nose-only HS under two regimens, occasional (30 min once weekly) and regular (30 min five times per week) for a duration of 6 months. This study explored the impact on renal damage, inflammatory responses, oxidative …

Articles

Hydroxyapatite (HA) is a bioceramic known for its bioactivity and osteoconductivity, which should make it an ideal candidate for maxillofacial bone regeneration. However, its brittleness limits its suitability for load-bearing applications. Over recent decades, substantial efforts have focused on enhancing its performance, particularly through ionic substitution, including magnesium-substituted HA (Mg-HA) and strontium-substituted HA (Sr-HA). This review summarises the available information on the structural, physical and mechanical properties of facial bones (maxilla, mandible, zygoma and frontal bone). The crystal structure, physical, and mechanical properties and in-vitro biological responses of dense and porous HA, Mg-HA and Sr-HA ceramics are described, with particular …

Real Talk: Piloting A Brief Digital Body Image Intervention For College Students, Logan Faith

Research Honors

The present study examines data from 20 participants who were randomly assigned to a brief digital body image intervention and a waitlist control group. The program, Real Talk, incorporated elements from several evidence-based approaches, namely affirming one’s values, making cognitive reappraisals, building body functionality, and self-compassion. The main outcome measures were body appreciation, functionality appreciation, self-kindness, and self-judgment. We hypothesized that Real Talk participants would experience greater increases in positive body image constructs and self-kindness and lower levels of self-judgment as compared to the waitlist control group. Data were analysed using nonparametric analyses due to the small sample size. Mann-Whitney …

Integrative Analysis Of Differentially Regulated Proteins In Meningioma, Maryam Shah Jan 2026

Integrative Analysis Of Differentially Regulated Proteins In Meningioma, Maryam Shah

Peninsula Medical School Theses

Background: Meningiomas are the most common primary intracranial tumours that arise from arachnoid cap cells of the meninges and dura border cells. These tumours share a unique epigenetic and genomic landscape. The most common epigenetic event in meningiomas is the loss of chromosome 22q. About 50% of meningiomas harbour mutations in the NF2 gene that resides on chromosome 22 and codes for a protein named “Merlin”. Moreover, frequent mutations can be observed in genes including AKT1, KLF4, TRAF7, SMO, and PIK3CA. Based on mutations, meningiomas can be divided into different genomic subgroups that express unique proteomic profiles. …

Civil & Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

Although hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) is the leading technology in converting wet biomass into bioenergy, the treatment of its toxic-laden aqueous phase wastewater presents a major challenge on its path toward commercial viability. This study presents the first-ever assessment of sewage sludge-fed HTL wastewater (SS-HTLWW) treatment and toxic compound removal using municipal activated sludge (AS) by optimizing its cultivation condition. It was found that AS with optimized pretreatment can remove up to 91.2% of the soluble chemical oxygen demand (sCOD) in SS-HTLWW, of which up to 82% can be attributed to biological mineralization and adsorption of sCOD by AS. Conventional bioprocess …

Fluoropolymers are widely used across sectors, but their production is associated with emissions of perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), which are mobile, persistent, and toxic. In this work, we compiled a global inventory of fluoropolymer production plants (FPPs) and assembled PFAS concentration measurements for various media in their vicinity. We identified 52 currently operating FPPs across 11 countries and 41 cities. For 12 FPPs, in 12 different cities, there are peer-reviewed site-specific PFAS measurements specifically attributed to the FPP. At these 12 sites, at least 236 individual PFASs have been detected across multiple environmental media, including surface water, groundwater, air, …
