Livestock farming contributes the production of food at the expense of environmental degradation on air, water and soil/land. The qualitative study, an initial environmental review (IER) was conducted to identify overall farm operation and management practice via various environmental aspects and associated impacts. The study has identified activities in selected farms with significant impacts on environment are transportation, resource consumption, manure and wastewater management. As observed, two farms have initiated a sustainable and environmentally livestock farming practice by taking consideration on natural resources consumption, animal, waste and impacts to nature. This work deals with blends of chitosan (CS) with agar (AG) and/or polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) at different proportions in solution and solid film forms with the aim to develop biopolymer blends with established rheological, mechanical, thermal, swelling and surface properties. Generation of waste continues to increase in response to rapid population growth. An estimated 10 million tonnes of total waste was produced in 2008 in Malaysia which was sent to 260 landfills. Malaysian landfills produce 1.3-7.5 L/kg/year of methane gas. Landfill gas consists mainly of methane (55%). CH4 is recognized as the primary global warming contributor with CH4 being 25 times more infrared absorptive capacity than CO2. Using “Biocover” at landfills is one option for methane oxidation. Dairy products containing probiotics (e.g. Lactobacillus ssp. and Bifidobacterium) and certain herbs have inhibitory effects on the growth of Helicobacter pylori. The objectives of the present study were to determine the effects of herbs traditionally used for the treatment of gastric ulcer on yogurt fermentation characteristics, probiotic bacteria and the growth of H. pylori in vitro. Giant freshwater prawn farming is startlingly increasing in Malaysia, yet little is known about the patterns of genetic diversity of its domesticated and wild stocks. Making use of populations with different gene resources is a way to increase genetic diversity of Macrobrachium rosenbergii in Malaysia. Availability of microsatellite markers (‘western’ form) which are highly polymorphic enables the divergence study of this species to be conducted for genetic improvement. This project successfully identified potential base populations for a genetic improvement program. Four Ganoderic acids (á, B, C1 H) were studied using molecular docking approach. Both reverse molecular docking and molecular docking were combined to elucidate suitable target(s) for these Ganoderic acids. Outcomes from molecular docking were compared and correlated to experimental data. In this study, antioxidants extracted, using methanol and dichloromethane, from Lentinus squarrosulus (Mont.) mycelium grown on rice, maize and soya bean supplemented with nitrogen sources (malt extract, yeast extract and peptone) at various concentrations were compared with mycelium grown in liquid Glucose-Yeast-Malt-peptone (GYMP). The antioxidant capacity of the extracts were then analyzed using 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging abilities and inhibition of lipid peroxidation. The total phenol content (TPC) of the extracts was also measured using the Folin–Ciocalteu method. Salinity is a major abiotic stress affecting crop productivity worldwide and results in millions of dollars in lost yield and damage to infrastructure. The purpose of this study was to identify microRNAs related to NaCl stress in Musa acuminata ssp. malaccensis (Ridl.). Sterilization techniques were employed to reduce contamination of embryos initiated from seeds. The germination rate of in vitro zygotic embryo culture was observed to increase to 92 % after soaking of the seeds in water (for periods of 2 or 3 days) compared to 72 % germination when no water treatment was used. Actinobacteria are well known for their production of an extensive array of chemically diverse and medically important secondary metabolites. Fifty two strains of actinobacteria used in this study were divided into 20 colour groups based on their aerial and substrate mycelium colour as well as diffusible pigment production on Yeast Extract Malt Extract (ISP) medium. Antifungal activity was determined against Candida albicans, Candida parapsilosis, Fusarium oxysporum, Ganoderma boninense, Schizosaccharomyces pombe and Saccharomyces cerevisiae by the agar plug-diffusion method. Soil bacterial diversity from three locations on maritime Antarctica was analyzed using 16S rRNA gene clone library construction and restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) fingerprinting. Soil samples were from near Rothera Research Station in Rothera Point from Adelaide Island, from Viking Valley on north-eastern side of Mars Glacier from Alexander Island, and from Léonie Island on northern Marguerite Bay, Antarctic Peninsula. Five hundred and forty-eight clones were screened by RFLP and representatives of each phylotype were sequenced for identification. Flavonoids are a class of natural products that are well known to possess a wide range of pharmacological properties. Due to their recent discovery in modulating muscarinic receptor activity and its inhibitory effect against dengue-2 virus NS3 protease, flavonoids are idea candidates for drug development. This dissertation describes the syntheses of several flavones and some Diels-Alder adducts derived from chalcones. Chemical modifications of Bacillus licheniformis �–amylase (BLA) were carried out using 100 molar excess of succinic anhydride over protein, 0.66 M potassium cyanate and 0.46 M O-methylisourea under standard conditions to prepare different modified derivatives. The percentage of modification as determined by TNBSA reaction method was found to be 42% for succinylated (S42), 81% for carbamylated (C81) and 88% for guanidinated (G88) BLA derivatives. These modified preparations were checked for their size and charge homogeneity by gel chromatography on Sephacryl S-200 HR column and polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. The genome of Streptococcus pneumoniae harbours at least eight putative toxinantitoxin (TA) loci. Two of these TA loci, pezAT and yefM-yoeBSpn, have previously been shown to be functional and the regulation mechanism of both TA loci was investigated in this study. Like most TA loci investigated, both the pezAT and yefMyoeBSpn loci were co-transcribed from σ70-type promoters. This research is concerned with building structures related to the active site of [FeFe] hydrogenase, the H-cluster (a) within surface confined electropolymers (b) in proteins by chemical modification of ferredoxin centres and (c) as catalytic moieties on light harvesting nanoparticles. The study begins by laying out the synthesis of materials used in the studies detailed in this thesis. The genus Pleurotus comprises some of the most popular edible mushrooms due to their favourable organoleptic and medicinal properties, vigorous growth and undemanding cultivation conditions. Pleurotus species contain a variety of secondary metabolites including various phenolic compounds which have been said to act as excellent antioxidants and possess antidiabetic activity. The antioxidant activity of mycelial extract of nine Pleurotus species and antidiabetic activity for Pleurotus citrinopileatus was investigated. In Escherichia coli, the Z ring has the potential to assemble anywhere along the cell length but is restricted to midcell by the action of negative regulatory systems, including Min. In the current model for the Min system, the MinC/MinD division inhibitory complex is evenly distributed on the membrane and can disrupt Z rings anywhere in the cell; however, MinE spatially regulates MinC/MinD by restricting it to the cell poles, thus allowing Z rings formation at midcell.
