A Riverbank Filtration Demonstration Project On The Kali River, Dandeli, Karnataka, India, Pamela Cady
A Riverbank Filtration Demonstration Project On The Kali River, Dandeli, Karnataka, India, Pamela Cady
Open Access Master's Theses
A small scale RBF system was installed in a village near the Kali River in the state of Karnataka to evaluate the performance of riverbank filtration (RBF) under the hydrogeological and climatological conditions of southern India. A series of hydraulic and tracer tests were carried out along with periodic biological and geochemical monitoring of various water sources in the study area.
Hydrogen and oxygen isotopes highlight the impact of evaporation and irrigation at nearby rice paddies on the RBF production well. Dissolved silica data used to determine the relative contributions of surface and groundwater indicate that this RBF system derives …
Impacts Of Asiatic Sand Sedge On Native Plants And Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi In A Barrier Dune, William Johnson
Impacts Of Asiatic Sand Sedge On Native Plants And Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi In A Barrier Dune, William Johnson
Open Access Master's Theses
The recent expansion of the nonnative invasive Asiatic sand sedge (Carex kobomugi Ohwi) at East Beach State Park, Rhode Island, is reducing populations of the most important native, dune-building species and their associated arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF). In contrast to the native American beachgrass (Ammophila breviligulata Fern.) that is dependent upon AMF to thrive in nutrient-poor sand dunes, C. kobomugi does not form beneficial associations with the fungi. Furthermore, assessments suggest that the sedge is competitively superior in obtaining the essential nutrient phosphorous without AMF-facilitation. Analysis of data from transects of the dune system revealed significant negative correlations …
Variability In Biomass Decay Rates And Nutrient Loss In Bloom-Forming Macroalgal Species, Jessica Elizabeth Conover
Variability In Biomass Decay Rates And Nutrient Loss In Bloom-Forming Macroalgal Species, Jessica Elizabeth Conover
Open Access Master's Theses
This thesis is comprised of one manuscript. A summary of the manuscript follows: Decaying macroalgae release nitrogen and other nutrients into the surrounding marine environment, providing nutrients for future generations of primary producers, as well as fueling a complex web of decomposer microorganisms. There are relatively few studies that examine macroalgal decomposition rates in areas impacted by macroalgal blooms, although fast-growing macroalgal bloom species typically decay more quickly than slow-growing perennial species. We studied whole tissue, organic content, and nutrient decay rates for five macroalgal species in Narragansett Bay, RI in the summer of 2010 using an intertidal litterbag design; …
Eating Rate, Fasting Ghrelin Concentrations And Weight Status In Female College Students At The University Of Rhode Island, Stephanie E. Perruzza
Eating Rate, Fasting Ghrelin Concentrations And Weight Status In Female College Students At The University Of Rhode Island, Stephanie E. Perruzza
Open Access Master's Theses
Obesity is a preventable cause of morbidity and mortality and affects over one-third of the American adult population. Eating rate and ghrelin concentrations are two variables that may play a role in obesity. An ancillary study of female college students examined the differences in eating rate (grams/second) and fasting plasma ghrelin concentrations (pg/mL) between weight status categories (normal weight body mass index (BMI) = 18.5-24.9 kg/m2, overweight BMI = 25-29.9 kg/m2 and obese BMI 30 kg/m2). Anthropometrics, clinical (blood pressure), and biochemical (glucose and ghrelin) data were assessed. Dietary information was obtained from three non-consecutive …
Influence Of Industrial Activities On The Spatial Distribution Of Wildlife In Murchison Falls National Park, Uganda, Samuel Ayebare
Influence Of Industrial Activities On The Spatial Distribution Of Wildlife In Murchison Falls National Park, Uganda, Samuel Ayebare
Open Access Master's Theses
Activities carried out by resource extraction industries in and adjacent to protected areas have increased the risk to biodiversity conservation in different parts of the world. Oil and natural gas developments in the Albertine rift, one of Africa’s biodiversity hotspots, have raised concerns about the potential impacts to wildlife populations and the associated land-cover change. The influence of oil and gas industrial activities on the spatial distribution of wildlife in Murchison Falls National Park was examined by conducting wildlife surveys along 2-km long transects that radiated away from well pads and access roads. The position of large mammal sightings were …
Effects Of A Resistance Training And Dietary Intervention On Body Composition In Overweight And Obese Community Dwelling Older Adults, Leah Dorfman
Open Access Master's Theses
Background: Community-based interventions that incorporate resistance training and dietary changes have not been extensively studied in overweight and obese older adults. The purpose of this investigation was to determine the effects of a combined community-based resistance training and dietary intervention on body composition in overweight and obese older adults.
Methods: Ninety-five overweight and obese (BMI = 33.4 ± 4.0 kg/m2) older adults aged (69.2 ± 6.2) years completed an eight-week resistance training and dietary intervention at four Rhode Island senior centers. Participants performed resistance training twice per week using resistance tubing, dumbbells, and ankle weights. Participants …

Modeling Loblolly Pine Aboveground Live Biomass In A Mature Pine-Hardwood Stand: A Cautionary Tale, D. C. Bragg
Modeling Loblolly Pine Aboveground Live Biomass In A Mature Pine-Hardwood Stand: A Cautionary Tale, D. C. Bragg
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
Carbon sequestration in forests is a growing area of interest for researchers and land managers. Calculating the quantity of carbon stored in forest biomass seems to be a straightforward task, but it is highly dependent on the function(s) used to construct the stand. For instance, there are a number of possible equations to predict aboveground live biomass for loblolly pine (Pinus taeda) growing in southeastern Arkansas. Depending on stem diameter at breast height (DBH), biomass varied considerably between four different prediction systems for loblolly pine. According to the tested models, individual tree oven-dry biomass for a 50 cm DBH loblolly …

Synthesis, Characterization, And Properties Of Homometallic Dinuclear Ruthenium Complex Containing Chloro-Phenanthroline And Bipyridine, A. A. Bhuiyan, S. Kudo
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
This paper deals with the synthesis and spectroscopic investigation of homometallic dinuclear ruthenium(II) complex containing chlorophenanthroline and bipyridine ligands. This bimetallic ruthenium polypyridine complex may be useful for biological electron transfer studies. Heteroleptic ruthenium monomer complex Ru(bpy)2(Cl-phen) (where bpy = 2,2’-bipyridine and Cl-phen = 5-chloro- 1,10-phenanthroline) was prepared in a two step procedure previously developed in our laboratory. This monomer complex was used to prepare the ruthenium dimer complex, (bpy)2Ru(phen-phen)Ru(bpy)2, by utilizing the Ni-catalyzed coupling reaction. Both the complexes were purified by column chromatography. The identity and the integrity of the complexes were confirmed by elemental analysis as well as …

Accuracy And User Variation Associated With Slope Measurement Using A Laser Hypsometer, C. Hastings, R. C. Weih Jr., H. O. Liechty, R. Harris
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
Slope measurements are often necessary for assessing features and processes within the natural environment. Land managers often use handheld equipment rather than more complicated surveying equipment in order to measure slopes and to conduct field work efficiently. One type of handheld device used to measure slope is a laser clinometer. In order to determine the accuracy and user error associated with this type of clinometer, slope measurements were taken at multiple locations using two types of equipment: 1) a Haglof Sweden Vertex III Hypsometer with a laser clinometer function and 2) a Topcon GTS-603/AF electronic survey total station which can …

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
During September 2008 through June 2011, we compiled a biological inventory of Meacham Cave in Independence County, AR. Compared to other caves in the region, Meacham Cave houses few vertebrates, but non-aquatic invertebrates were relatively common. A transiently-increased bacterial load in the cave’s only pool of water indicated recent fecal contamination. The combination of vandalism, low vertebrate populations, and high coliform bacterial load reveals that human abuse of the cave has significantly disrupted its ecosystem. Gating the cave in such a way as to allow the movement of bats, salamanders and other animals, while excluding humans, may allow the cave …

Phenomenology And The Rehabilitation Of Philosophy, Matthew J. Berrios
Phenomenology And The Rehabilitation Of Philosophy, Matthew J. Berrios
McNair Scholars Journal
Philosophy as the study of ultimate principles of knowledge, has been challenged recently in history by some of the intellectual forces in modernism and post-modernism. In response to this, the movement known as phenomenology has arisen to answer the objections posed by these two intellectual movements. As a movement, phenomenology was developed in the late nineteenth-century under the German mathematicianphilosopher Edmund Husserl as a response to the logical questions involved with some of the psychologistic systems of thought of the period that sought to reduce the rules and workings of logic to psychological processes of the human mind. However, because …
Investigating The Role Of Nrg1p And Tup1p During Candida Albicans Chlamydospore Formation, Shannon M. Williams
Investigating The Role Of Nrg1p And Tup1p During Candida Albicans Chlamydospore Formation, Shannon M. Williams
McNair Scholars Journal
Candidiasis represents the fourth most frequent nosocomial infection both in the US and worldwide. C. albicans is the most common cause of candidiasis which has unacceptably high morbidity and mortality rates and important economic repercussions (estimated total direct cost of approximately 2 billion dollars in 1998 in US hospitals alone). The pathogenic potential of C. albicans is intimately related to certain key processes including biofilm formation and filamentation. C. albicans can grow as yeast cells, pseudohyphae or hyphae and produce chlamydospores with its form being dictated by its surrounding conditions. The ability to form hyphal cells has been fundamentally linked …

Emerging Issues And Methodological Advances In Fisheries Reproductive Biology, Nancy J. Brown-Peterson
Emerging Issues And Methodological Advances In Fisheries Reproductive Biology, Nancy J. Brown-Peterson
Faculty Publications
Although incorporating detailed reproductive data into all stock assessments is not a practical goal, the need to understand how reproductive biology affects population productivity is being increasingly recognized. More research focused on reproductive biology-coupled with a shift towards a resilience perspective in fisheries science-is resulting in challenges to many long-held assumptions; the emergence of important new issues; and identification of the need to improve data and methods used in reproductive studies. Typically, data for reproductive studies are based on an assessment of gonadal development, which is most accurately evaluated with histology. This special section of Marine and Coastal Fisheries contains …

Increasing interest has been shown in brief interventions for troubled persons, including those with substance abuse problems. Most of the published literature on this topic has focused on adults, and on the efficacy of these interventions. Few of these studies have examined the critical issues of enrollment and engagement in brief intervention services. The present article seeks to address the shortcomings in the current literature by reporting on our experiences implementing National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA)-funded brief intervention projects involving truant and diversion program youths.

The CDC25 protein phosphatases drive cell cycle advancement by activating cyclin-dependent protein kinases (CDKs). Humans and mice encode three family members denoted CDC25A, -B and -C and genes encoding these family members can be disrupted individually with minimal phenotypic consequences in adult mice. However, adult mice globally deleted for all three phosphatases die within one week after Cdc25 disruption. A severe loss of absorptive villi due to a failure of crypt epithelial cells to proliferate was observed in the small intestines of these mice. Because the Cdc25s were globally deleted, the small intestinal phenotype and loss of animal viability could …

Preface by Julián Carrón
...The essays making up this book reveal that law finds itself at a crossroads that is more anthropological than juridical. Indeed one’s concept of law flows directly from one’s concept of humanity. For this reason it seems to me entirely appropriate that the authors have refused to reduce elementary experience to doctrine or other abstract formulas to be imposed mechanically upon reality. Only an individual capable of feeling one’s own elementary experience alive within herself can make a valuable contribution to the debate that will lead us through this crossroads in the …

Building A Latin American Coalition On Forests: Negotiation Barriers And Opportunities, Maria Banda, John Oppermann
Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law
This Article looks at how these difficulties might be remedied to allow Latin America to lead the world to a robust anti-deforestation agreement. Part I provides a concise background on the REDD talks at the 2009 Copenhagen Climate Conference, which serves as a useful illustration of the substantive and procedural challenges in the ongoing deforestation negotiations. It identifies the main stakeholders at the climate talks and the camps in which national delegations organized themselves at Copenhagen. It then reviews the major substantive roadblocks in the REDD negotiations and identifies a series of analytical, ideological, and structural barriers that impeded significant …
