The Accessibility Of Adulthood, Hilary Finedore Jan 2011

The Accessibility Of Adulthood, Hilary Finedore

Honors Papers

Among individuals with developmental disabilities, an individual's needs and self perceptions interact continually with mainstream expectations about adulthood and disability, altering the very way in which the concept of adulthood is expressed. Fieldwork at a county agency serving the needs of individuals with developmental disabilities (consumers) suggests that at the agency's adult day center, unique kinds of social interaction can develop as a result, reflecting the reconciliation of these specific needs and abilities with mainstream expectations.

This county agency seeks to recreate social and economic aspects of mainstream life for individuals that attend this day center, and thus through these …

The Sentence, The Novel, And Autobiography: The Histories Of Reading And Self In Bunyan And Rousseau, Samuel Rowe Jan 2011

The Sentence, The Novel, And Autobiography: The Histories Of Reading And Self In Bunyan And Rousseau, Samuel Rowe

Honors Papers

This study analyzes late-seventeenth and eighteenth-century autobiographies in order to address questions regarding the relationship between the history of reading and the "history of the self" in the West. More particularly, it examines the treatment of reading and textuality in John Bunyan's "Grace Abounding" and Jean-Jacques Rousseau's "Confessions" in order to suggest that the historical phenomenon Michel Foucault describes as the "emergence of Man" can be understood in terms of the rise of mass print culture and subsequent development of extensive reading practices during the eighteenth century.

Shakin' Exploitation: Black Female Bodies In Contemporary Hip-Hop And Pornography, Amber Walker Jan 2011

Shakin' Exploitation: Black Female Bodies In Contemporary Hip-Hop And Pornography, Amber Walker

Honors Papers

Through a methodological framework consisting of historical analysis, pop culture analysis, and hip-hop feminist theory, this paper will explore the complex intersections of race, gender, and agency in contemporary hip-hop and adult entertainment.

The first section, "Look Back at Me: Jezebel, the Black Lady and Constructions of Black Female Sexuality Identity", will consist of a historical overview of images of Black women constructed since enslavement into the late 20th century and highlight the links between these stereotypes and the sexualized images that exist of Black female identity in contemporary hip-hop. The politics of respectability will also be discussed and how …

Pavlovian Conditioning Between Cocaine Stimulant Effects And A Discrete Sensory Cue: Implementation Of An Alternating Conditioning Procedure, Jonathan Miller Wachtel Jan 2011

Pavlovian Conditioning Between Cocaine Stimulant Effects And A Discrete Sensory Cue: Implementation Of An Alternating Conditioning Procedure, Jonathan Miller Wachtel

Honors Papers

Cocaine addiction is associated with an extremely high rate of relapse, the resumption of drug taking behavior following a period of abstinence. Relapse may be induced by exposure to drug-associated cues, stress, or drug challenge. Rodent models of addiction investigate reinstatement, the resumption of drug-seeking behavior following a period of abstinence. This study investigated the necessary procedures for establishing Pavlovian conditioning between a discrete sensory cue and cocaine stimulant effects (15.0 mg/kg, IP). Successful conditioning was indicated by cue induced conditioned hyperactivity. In Experiment 1, a simple discrete visual cue failed to be attributed salience. Cocaine-treated rats showed heightened locomotor …

Cultural Production And Ephemeral Art: Feminicide And The Geography Of Memory In Ciudad Juárez, 1998-2008, Alice Laurel Driver Jan 2011

Cultural Production And Ephemeral Art: Feminicide And The Geography Of Memory In Ciudad Juárez, 1998-2008, Alice Laurel Driver

Theses and Dissertations--Hispanic Studies

This dissertation examines representations of feminicide victims in documentary film, novels, non-fiction, art, and graffiti and argues that these images express anxiety about they way women traverse and inhabit the geography of Ciudad Juárez, often giving precedence to the idea of the public female body as hypersexualized. In order to reclaim memory of the victims some cultural producers focus on the testimonial form in which victims’ families and other activists share their stories or construct informal memorials in the city; these remembrances later appear in works of non-fiction, film, and art, as markers of the process of creating and preserving …

Examining Sleep Problems In Children With Autism Spectrum Disorders, Susan Moschos Jan 2011

Examining Sleep Problems In Children With Autism Spectrum Disorders, Susan Moschos

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Sleep problems are prevalent in children with neurodevelopmental disabilities such as autism spectrum disorders. Inadequate sleep can negatively affect the child's daily functioning as well as serve as a source of stress for the child's family. Although there is a growing body of literature aimed at improving sleep difficulties in children with disabilities, there is less known about sleep difficulties in children with autism spectrum disorders and a particular paucity in regard to treatment for sleep problems. The purpose of this paper was to investigate the effectiveness of a behavioral treatment package designed to reduce bedtime resistance and night awakenings …

Disease, Medicine And Health, Diego Armus, A. López Denis Jan 2011

Disease, Medicine And Health, Diego Armus, A. López Denis

History Faculty Works

This article focuses on three overlapping trends in the historical study of human responses to illness, labeled as “new history of medicine, history of public health, and sociocultural history of disease.” The topics range from colonial epidemiology and pharmacopoeia to twentieth-century public health institutions and urban hygiene. But a consistent focus on the social, cultural, and symbolic components of diseases and cures unifies this historiography and distinguishes it from the narrower scope of the long-established field of the history of medicine.

Transmissive Olefination Of Alkenenitrile And Allylic Halides, Lihua Yao Jan 2011

Transmissive Olefination Of Alkenenitrile And Allylic Halides, Lihua Yao

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Part 1. Grignard reagents readily add to alkenenitriles bearing an adjacent hydroxyl group to afford Z-alkenenitriles with transmissive relocation of the C=C bond. Mechanistically the transmissive olefination is consistent with rearrangement through a cyclic 6-membered transition structure in which the formal displacement of hydroxide occurs by forming magnesium oxide.

Part 2. Addition of niobium halides to a series of allylic or propargylic alkoxides directly provides allylic or allenic halides. Halogenation formally occurs through a metalla-halo-[3, 3] rearrangement although at least these different mechanisms may operate competitively. Transposition of the olefin is equally effective for allylic alkoxides prepared by necleophilic addition, …

Rhetoric Of Reconciliation: Implications From Bonhoeffer's [Work] For A Communicative Praxis Of Reconciliation Grounded In Christian Narrative, Charles E. Thomas Jan 2011

Rhetoric Of Reconciliation: Implications From Bonhoeffer's [Work] For A Communicative Praxis Of Reconciliation Grounded In Christian Narrative, Charles E. Thomas

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Reconciliation may broadly be considered as the repairing, restoring, and mending of that which has been broken, namely relationships be they interpersonal, communal, or national due to some type of conflict between two parties. This project seeks to establish a Rhetoric of Reconciliation as a narratively constructed ethical communicative praxis. The first chapter will consist of an overview of reconciliation. In the second chapter the major theoretical frameworks and scholarship in the field of reconciliation will be considered to establish a working understanding of the particular communicative processes of reconciliation and how these processes are narratively grounded. The major theoretical …

The Pursuit Of Divinity: Religious Faith And Fear In Late Victorian Women's Poetry, Sharon Lee George Jan 2011

The Pursuit Of Divinity: Religious Faith And Fear In Late Victorian Women's Poetry, Sharon Lee George

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The relationship that the Victorians had with their God(s) was not an easy one. Despite the age's oft mocked attachment to religiosity, many individuals underwent profound re-evaluations of their faith, spurred by the combined forces of legislation that challenged the monolithic Anglican Church and the burgeoning fields of High Criticism, scientific inquiry, and technology. For some, religious introspection led to profound spirituality and a deeper understanding of their Christian faith. Others were drawn to alternative systems of faith characterized by a fluidness of belief. Most found the process of navigating their faith to be terrifying because religion was a high-stakes …

Improving Community Participation Of The Inactive Elderly: Preferred Learning Style-Based Interventions, Catherine Bailey Jan 2011

Improving Community Participation Of The Inactive Elderly: Preferred Learning Style-Based Interventions, Catherine Bailey

Occupational Therapy Capstones

Occupational therapists believe social engagement is vital to the health and well-being of the older adult. Social isolation has been linked to loss of physical, cognitive and emotional health. Elders at risk of social isolation are not specifically addressed by community health programs due to lack of knowledge and resources. Social isolation and loss of meaningful activity are significant precursors to rapid decline in the health and well-being of elderly people living in their communities.

Literature indicates that use of personal learning style preferences to problem solve improves success in occupation. Older adults often lack awareness of their personal learning …

Strategies To Promote Oral Motor Skills And Progression Of Foods For Infants And Young Children With Feeding Concerns, Heather Davis, Anne Winter Jan 2011

Strategies To Promote Oral Motor Skills And Progression Of Foods For Infants And Young Children With Feeding Concerns, Heather Davis, Anne Winter

Occupational Therapy Capstones

Eating is a primary occupation for individuals from birth through adulthood. However, some infants and young children experience difficulty and frustration as they begin to eat and transition to foods with texture. Field, Garland, and Williams (2003) determined that up to 80% of children with developmental disabilities experienced problems with feeding. There is a need for providing education and support for the families of these children (White-Traut & Norr, 2009). Pilkington (2006) conveyed that supporting and building the parent's capacity for caring for their child resulted in enhanced outcomes for the infant or child. Current resources may not be parent-friendly …

Narrative Approach To Corporate Strategy: Empirical Foundations, Michael S. Carriger

WCBT Faculty Publications

Purpose - This paper aims to present theoretical and empirical foundations for the use of a particular type of narrative skillfully deployed by senior leaders in an organization as an effective tool for creating, disseminating and executing corporate strategy. Design/methodology/approach - The paper presents original research on the effectiveness of the use of a "springboard story" as a leadership tool. Findings - Data are presented to substantiate that a "springboard story" presentation of corporate strategy and competitive advantage is more effective at producing a consistent and confident choice of competitive advantage among an audience than a presentation of corporate strategy …

Evidence For The Impact Of Reactive Oxygen Species On The Control Of Branching In Neurospora Crassa, Jacob Yablonowski, Alex Zapata, Michael Watters Jan 2011

Evidence For The Impact Of Reactive Oxygen Species On The Control Of Branching In Neurospora Crassa, Jacob Yablonowski, Alex Zapata, Michael Watters

Symposium on Research and Creative Expression (SORCE)

In preliminary screens, several functions, most notably, genes involved in the control of reactive oxygen species (ROS), were identified as playing a role in the process of growth rate compensation of branch density. The maintenance of branch density under growth at various temperatures was examined in a selection of mutants in genes known to be important in the control of ROS. In all ROS control mutants tested, growth was shown to branch tighter when grown at higher temperatures (which result in faster growth rates) and looser when grown at lower temperatures (which results in slower growth rates). This can be …

A 1-D Mechanistic Model For The Evolution Of Earthflow-Prone Hillslopes, Adam M. Booth, Joshua J. Roering

Geology Faculty Publications and Presentations

In mountainous terrain, deep‐seated landslides transport large volumes of material on hillslopes, exerting a dominant control on erosion rates and landscape form. Here, we develop a mathematical landscape evolution model to explore interactions between deep‐seated earthflows, soil creep, and gully processes at the drainage basin scale over geomorphically relevant (>103 year) timescales. In the model, sediment flux or incision laws for these three geomorphic processes combine to determine the morphology of actively uplifting and eroding steady state topographic profiles. We apply the model to three sites, one in the Gabilan Mesa, California, with no earthflow activity, and two …

Dow Chemical Vs. ‘Coercive Utopians’: Constructing The Contested Ground Of Science And Government Regulation In 1970s America, Amy M. Hay Jan 2011

Dow Chemical Vs. ‘Coercive Utopians’: Constructing The Contested Ground Of Science And Government Regulation In 1970s America, Amy M. Hay

History Faculty Publications

In 1979, the Dow Chemical Company published an excerpt from a speech by H. Peter Metzger that announced an emerging conflict in American ideals and public policy. He stated that a new kind of individual inhabited Washington, people from the counterculture who were “coercive utopians” because they sought to achieve their agenda through covert actions and hoped to end the American free market economy. Following the 1962 publication of Rachel Carson’s Silent Spring and the subsequent banning of DDT in 1972, Dow and other chemical manufacturers fought to keep the regulatory climate favorable to industry. Dow found itself defending the …
