Perceptions Of A Deity And Corresponding Religious Group As Affected By Descriptions Of Gender And Personal Characteristics, Hannah R. Jones Jan 2011

Perceptions Of A Deity And Corresponding Religious Group As Affected By Descriptions Of Gender And Personal Characteristics, Hannah R. Jones

Honors Projects

Both personal and social identities are important to the self-concept, but the values of such identities can come into question when they conflict with one another. The religious group, one such identification, can exert a great deal of influence over one’s thoughts and beliefs. However, religion is often critiqued for being a reflection of the patriarchal context from which a religion often emerges, which potentially elicits and reinforces gender stereotypes and sexism within the religious group. This can be seen in the Abrahamic religions; they maintain that their God does not claim biological sex nor gender, but their texts include …

Coping With Forest Fragmentation: A Comparison Of Colobus Angolensis Palliatus Dietary Diversity And Behavioral Plasticity In The East Sagara Forest, Tanzania., Noah T. Dunham Jan 2011

Coping With Forest Fragmentation: A Comparison Of Colobus Angolensis Palliatus Dietary Diversity And Behavioral Plasticity In The East Sagara Forest, Tanzania., Noah T. Dunham

Honors Projects

Habitat destruction and forest fragmentation are perhaps the largest threats to primate species around the world. While national parks, games reserves, and primate sanctuaries are instrumental in primate conservation, research suggests that some non-governmentally protected forest fragments may also serve as viable habitats for primates. Of course not all primates respond to fragmentation in the same way, but a species’ ability to survive in a fragment relates to 1) home range size 2) degree of frugivory 3) dietary flexibility and behavioral plasticity and 4) ability to utilize matrix habitats. Here I describe these variables in relation to black and white …

A New Species Of Marsupial Frog (Anura: Hemiphractidae: Gastrotheca) From The Río Abiseo National Park In Peru, Edgar Lehr, Alessandro Catenazzi

Scholarship

We describe a new species of Gastrotheca from the Río Abiseo National Park of the San Martín Region in the Andes of northern Peru. The description is based on a series of 29 specimens that were collected between 1989 and 1999 at two localities (Pampa del Cuy, Alpamachay) in the wet puna of the national park between 3380 and 3470 m elevation. The new species has a snout–vent length of 46.9–57.7 mm (53.5 ± 3.0) in females (n = 21), and 35.3–43.8 mm (41.6 ± 3.2) in males (n  =  6). In life, the dorsum is pale grayish brown with …

Automatic Classification Of Decorative Patterns In The Minoan Pottery Of Kamares Style, Filippo Stanco, Davide Tanasi, Giuseppe C. Guarnera, Giovanni Gallo Jan 2011

Automatic Classification Of Decorative Patterns In The Minoan Pottery Of Kamares Style, Filippo Stanco, Davide Tanasi, Giuseppe C. Guarnera, Giovanni Gallo

History Faculty Publications

An important feature of the Minoan culture is the pottery of Kamares style, that documents the Cretan cultural production between the first half of the 2nd millennium BC. This high level painted production, characterized by the combination of several diverse motifs, presents an enormous decorative repertoire. The extraordinary variety of combinations between elementary motifs according to a complex visual syntax makes interesting the automatic identification of the motifs, particularly upon potsherds. A complete pipeline to accomplish this task is still a challenge to Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition. Starting from a digital image ROI identification, motif extraction, robust contour detection …

怪誕‧悲劇英雄 : 論《山海經》中的形天與夸父, Cheuk Ho Wan Jan 2011

怪誕‧悲劇英雄 : 論《山海經》中的形天與夸父, Cheuk Ho Wan

2010-2011

Williams-Cocks, Ryan Bullen, Jeremy Catmull, Jesse Falk, Daniel Martin, Jerom Mauer, Annabel E. Barber, Robert C. Wang, Shawn Gerstenberger, Karl Kingsley

Environmental & Global Health Faculty Research

Background: The human papillomaviruses (HPV) are a large family of non-enveloped DNA viruses, mainly associated with cervical cancers. Recent epidemiologic evidence has suggested that HPV may be an independent risk factor for oropharyngeal cancers. Evidence now suggests HPV may modulate the malignancy process in some tobacco- and alcohol-induced oropharynx tumors, but might also be the primary oncogenic factor for inducing carcinogenesis among some non-smokers. More evidence, however, is needed regarding oral HPV prevalence among healthy adults to estimate risk. The goal of this study was to perform an HPV screening of normal healthy adults to assess oral HPV prevalence.

Randomized Trials Of Alcohol-Use Interventions With College Students And Their Parents: Lessons From The Transitions Project, A. C. Fernandez, Mark D. Wood, Robert G. Laforge, J. T. Black

Psychology Faculty Publications

Background Matriculation from high school to college is typified by an increase in alcohol use and related harm for many students. Therefore, this transition period is an ideal time for preventive interventions to target alcohol use and related problems.

Purpose The purpose of this report is to describe the design and methods used in the Transitions Project, a randomized controlled trial of two interventions designed to prevent and reduce heavy episodic drinking and alcohol-related negative consequences among incoming college students.

Methods This study used a 2 × 2 factorial design to investigate the effects of a two-session brief motivational intervention …

Motivation To Change Alcohol Use And Treatment Engagement In Incarcerated Youth, Mary Clair, L.A.R. Stein, Rosemarie Martin, Nancy P. Barnett, Suzanne M. Colby, Peter M. Monti, Charles Golembeske Jr., Rebecca Lebeau

Psychology Faculty Publications

Adolescents have been reported to be less motivated to engage and remain in substance abuse treatment than adults. When they appear motivated, it is often due to external motivators such as family pressure or court mandated treatment. The purpose of this study was to determine if adolescents' motivation to change alcohol use was related to treatment engagement while incarcerated and alcohol use after release. Participants (N = 114) were youth in a state correctional facility in the Northeast and included adolescents who engaged in at least monthly drinking. Motivation to change alcohol use was measured by the Alcohol Ladder (AL), …

Between God And The Apple: Divinity, Violence And Desire In A.L. Kennedy's 'Original Bliss', Abigail Rine Jan 2011

Between God And The Apple: Divinity, Violence And Desire In A.L. Kennedy's 'Original Bliss', Abigail Rine

Faculty Publications - Department of English

This article investigates how female sexuality and desire can be refigured beyond dynamics of fear and subjugation. By offering a close reading of A.L. Kennedy’s novel Original bliss through the theories of He´le`ne Cixous and Luce Irigaray, this work highlights the relationship between violence and Western religious notions of divinity, sexuality and the female body. Kennedy’s novel portrays, in violent detail, that the way in which the religious dimension has been conceptualised and articulated enforces negative views of female sexuality and justifies violence against the body. Rather than merely confronting the religious denigration of feminine sexuality, however, Kennedy’s novel also …

Crawford’S Expansive Definition Of “Oppose” Breathes New Life Into Pure Third-Party Retaliation Claims Under Title Vii, Michael Costello

Seattle University Law Review

This Comment argues that courts should read Crawford’s expanded definition of oppose to extend the protection of Title VII’s anti-retaliation provision to pure third-party victims of retaliation. Part II of this Comment presents a history of Title VII’s anti-retaliation provision. Part III discusses the holding of Crawford and its potential impact on pure third-party retaliation claims under Title VII. Part IV explains how reading Crawford to allow third-party retaliation claims furthers the policy goals of Title VII. Part V concludes that courts should read Crawford as extending Title VII’s anti-retaliation protections to victims of pure third-party retaliation.
