Investigating The Effects Of The Plasticizers Bisphenol A And Di (2-Ethylhexyl) Phthalate On Dopaminergic Neurons In A C. Elegans Parkinson's Disease, Amanda Valera

Undergraduate Honors Theses

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by loss of dopamine (DA) containing neurons in the substantia nigra of the brain. Though the cellular pathways that lead to PD are varied and not well understood, elevated levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and inhibition of the mitochondrial electron transport chain enzyme complex I have been associated with PD pathogenesis. Environmental factors such as the plasticizers bisphenol A (BPA) and di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) may also be involved in PD pathogenesis. In this research, three strains of the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans), a wild-type N2 strain, a ROS-sensitive nnt …

Adhd And Criminality: A Primer On The Genetic, Neurobiological, Evolutionary, And Treatment Literature For Criminologists, Catrina M. Schilling, Anthony Walsh, Ilhong Yun

Criminal Justice Faculty Publications and Presentations

This paper is a primer on ADHD and its major comorbidities for criminologists unfamiliar with the genetic, neurobiological, and evolutionary literature on the subject. With Unnerver, Cullen & Pratt (2003) we are surprised that criminologists do not pay sufficient attention to a disorder that is found at rates in prisons around the world greatly exceeding in prevalence in the general population. Unnerver, Cullen & Pratt (2003) believe that it is because ADHD research has been carried out primarily by biomedical researchers and that criminologists tend to shy away from anything smacking of biology. We believe that the special expertise of …

Explanatory Synthesis And Rule Synthesis: A Comparative Civil Law And Common Law Analysis, Michael D. Murray Jan 2011

Explanatory Synthesis And Rule Synthesis: A Comparative Civil Law And Common Law Analysis, Michael D. Murray

Law Faculty Scholarly Articles

In comparative study of common law and civilian legal analysis, many scholars have noted a convergence in the two systems' use of precedent cases. Although common law legal theory historically has started from a position that judges are fully competent to create law and change the law through their adjudication of cases and the judicial opinions they write, and civilian theory historically has started from a position that judges are not empowered to create and change the law enacted by the legislature but rather are to read and apply the existing law to new cases, the practice of tribunals within …

A Novel Zno-Methylene Blue Nanocomposite Matrix For Biosensing Application, Shibu Saha, S. K. Arya, S. P. Singh, Vinay Gupta

Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications

A novel hybrid matrix of zinc oxide-methylene blue (ZnO-MB) has been successfully developed for biosensing application. The introduction of methylene blue into the ZnO thin film leads to reduction in the charge transfer resistance and suggests an increase in the electron transfer capacity of the composite. Glucose oxidase (GOx) was chosen as the model enzyme and effectively immobilized on the surface of hybrid ZnO-MB nanocomposite matrix. Electrochemical measurements were employed to study biosensing response of the GOx/ZnO-MB/ITO bioelectrode as a function of glucose concentration. The low oxidation potential (−0.23 V) of the hybrid bioelectrode, in a mediatorless electrolyte, makes it …

Who The Judge Ate For Breakfast: On The Limits Of Creativity In Animal Law And The Redeeming Power Of Powerlessness, Matthew Liebman

Animal Law Review

Drawing upon various schools of legal thought, this Essay explores how ideological and non-legal factors influence the adjudication process in animal law cases. The Legal Realist and Critical Legal Studies movements highlighted the indeterminacy present in legal doctrine and undermined trust in judges’ ability to arrive at “correct” answers to legal questions. In the midst of such indeterminacy, where legal texts do not predetermine legal outcomes, judges tend to render decisions that are consistent with pervasive societal norms and existing distributions of political power. Starting from these premises, the Author questions whether innovative and creative impact litigation by the animal …

A "Fisheye" Lens On The Technological Dilemma: The Specter Of Genetically Engineered Animals, George Kimbrel, Paige Tomaselli Jan 2011

A "Fisheye" Lens On The Technological Dilemma: The Specter Of Genetically Engineered Animals, George Kimbrel, Paige Tomaselli

Animal Law Review

One year ago, the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) proposed approval of the first genetically engineered (GE or transgenic) animal for food production—a salmon engineered to grow much faster than normal using genetic material from an ocean pout. Faced with concerns from scientists and the public that these “super” salmon will escape into the wild and be the final blow to wild salmon, proponents crafted a scheme that is half Michael Crichton, half Kurt Vonnegut: The engineered salmon eggs will begin life in a lab on a frozen Canadian island, then be airlifted to a guarded Panamanian fortress, …

Background: Admixture mapping is a powerful gene mapping approach for an admixed population formed from ancestral populations with different allele frequencies. The power of this method relies on the ability of ancestry informative markers (AIMs) to infer ancestry along the chromosomes of admixed individuals. In this study, more than one million SNPs from HapMap databases and simulated data have been interrogated in admixed populations using various measures of ancestry informativeness: Fisher Information Content (FIC), Shannon Information Content (SIC), F statistics (FST), Informativeness for Assignment Measure (In), and the Absolute Allele Frequency Differences (delta, δ). …

Development Of Dna Based Active Macro-Materials For Biology And Medicine: A Review, Frank Xue Jiang, Bernard Yurke, Devendra Verma, Michelle Previtera, Rene Schloss, Noshir A. Langrana

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

DNA was first discovered as the carrier of genetic information for the majority of the known living organisms, encoding the secret of life. Its delicate design based upon double helical structure and base pairing offers a stable and reliable media for storing hereditary codes, laying the foundation for the central dogma (Watson et al. 2003). The impact of this molecule is far reaching into scientific community and our society, as manifested in many fields, for instance, forensics (Budowle et al. 2003), besides medicine. To date, a great deal of research effort has been directed towards understanding

There is a high incidence of infertility in males following traumatic spinal cord injury (SCI). Quality of semen is frequently poor in these patients, but the pathophysiological mechanism(s) causing this are not known. Blood-testis barrier (BTB) integrity following SCI has not previously been examined. The objective of this study was to characterize the effects of spinal contusion injury on the BTB in the rat. 63 adult, male Sprague Dawley rats received SCI (n = 28), laminectomy only (n = 7) or served as uninjured, age-matched controls (n = 28). Using dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (DCE-MRI), BTB permeability to the …

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Vertical distribution patterns and stable isotopic geochemistry of benthic foraminifera labeled with CellTracker Green and stained with Rose Bengal were compared at sites of active methane seepage and adjacent non-seep habitats off the Pacific coast of Costa Rica. Sediment cores of bacterial mats from Costa Rica revealed vertical distribution patterns more similar to those seen previously in clam beds, suggesting increased levels of bioturbation compared to nonseep sites. Similar taxa were found at both seep and non-seep sites including: Chilostomella oolina, Uvigerina peregrina and hispida, Cibicides mckannai, and Cassidulina braziliensis. Within active methane seep habitats, elevated substrate such as carbonate …

Effects Of Monetary Incentives On Academic Performance Of Fourth-Grade Students From Low Socioeconomic Status, Sandra O. Dafiaghor

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Scientific investigations of monetary incentives on students' academic achievement have not explored effects on performance of students from low socioeconomic status (SES), nor has there been exploration of teachers' perceptions of how monetary incentives impact academic performance of students from low socioeconomic status. The present study explored how low SES students perceive their academic performances being impacted by extrinsic monetary incentives. The study also explored the fourth-grade teachers' beliefs about the impact of monetary incentive on students' academic performance. The study found that students believe monetary incentives will increase academic performance, depending on the size of the cash incentive. The …

Gay, Lesbian, And Bisexual Spirituality: An Intersectional Identity Study, Zachary G. Birch Jan 2011

Gay, Lesbian, And Bisexual Spirituality: An Intersectional Identity Study, Zachary G. Birch

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

With college students becoming more interested in the spiritual dimensions of their lives (Astin, 2004; Lindholm, 2007), gay, lesbian, and bisexual (GLB) students may have a harder time finding the support to navigate their spiritual selves. Because of this, the intersection of spiritual identity and GLB identity was investigated. Specifically, this study sought to see if students. GLB identities affect their spiritual identities, if their spiritual identities affect their GLB identities, and if there was a connection and intersection between the two. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with eight students. This study showed that there could be a relationship …

Teacher Bullies: A Factorial Analysis Of Perceptions Of Teachers' Bullying Behaviors, Sally Walter Davies Jan 2011

Teacher Bullies: A Factorial Analysis Of Perceptions Of Teachers' Bullying Behaviors, Sally Walter Davies

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Bullying in schools is a global phenomenon that can infringe upon the rights of students to learn and grow in a secure and fostering environment. Most of the past and current research on school bullying focuses on peer bullying, but there is a gap in the understanding of types and characteristics of bullying behaviors. This study centered on a type of abusive behavior that has received very limited attention: teachers bullying students. For the purpose of this study, the definition of teacher bullying behavior is a repeated pattern of conduct used to punish, manipulate, or disparage a student, rooted in …

Social position in a dominance hierarchy is often tightly coupled with fertility. Consequently, ananimal that can recognize and rapidly take advantage of anopportunity to rise inrankwillhaveareproductive advantage. Reproduction in all vertebrates is controlled by the brain-pituitary-gonad axis, andin males of the African cichlid fish Astatotilapia burtoni, GnRH1 neurons at the apex of this axis are under social control. However, little is known about how quickly social information is transformed into functional reproductive change, or about how socially controlled changes in GnRH1 neurons influence downstream actions of the brain-pituitary-gonad axis. We created an opportunity for reproductively suppressed males to ascend in status and …

The CONSTITUTIVE EXPRESSOR OF PATHOGENESIS-RELATED GENES5 (CPR5) gene of Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) encodes a putative membrane protein of unknown biochemical function and displays highly pleiotropic functions, particularly in pathogen responses, cell proliferation, cell expansion, and cell death. Here, we demonstrate a link between CPR5 and the GLABRA1 ENHANCER BINDING PROTEIN (GeBP) family of transcription factors. We investigated the primary role of the GeBP/GeBP-like (GPL) genes using transcriptomic analysis of the quadruple gebp gpl1,2,3 mutant and one overexpressing line that displays several cpr5-like phenotypes including dwarfism, spontaneous necrotic lesions, and increased pathogen resistance. We found that GeBP/GPLs regulate a set of …

b-Bilene hydrochlorides are shown to be improved intermediates for the synthesis of metallo-isoporphyrins in enhanced yields (28% vs. 6%). Several new diamagnetic zinc(II) and a novel paramagnetic copper(II) isoporphyrin salts were also obtained using this approach. Metal-free isoporphyrins were also isolated. In vitro studies using human carcinoma HEp2 cells show that all metallo-isoporphyrins accumulate within cells and localize partially in the mitochondria. The zinc-isoporphyrins were found to be moderately phototoxic while the copper complex showed the lowest phototoxicity, maybe as a result of its paramagnetic nature. © 2011 World Scientific Publishing Company.

Monsanto Co. V. Geertson Seed Farms: Irreparable Injury To The National Environmental Policy Act?, Madeline Gwyn

Emory Law Journal

The Supreme Court recently embarked on a path toward removing the only teeth the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) has--its procedural mandates. In Winter v. Natural Resources Defense Council, Inc. and, more recently, in the controversial case Monsanto Co. v. Geertson Seed Farms, the Court declined to issue an injunction against federal agency action despite the agency's failure to complete an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) regarding the action, as required by NEPA.

Message from the President: Brutus, when consigning Caesar to eternity, seeks attention from friends, Romans, and countrymen, asking them to lend him their ears. Had he been living in Baton Rouge in 2011, he might well have added to that list “coalitions,” the Flagship Coalition being the newest among the many supporters and compatriots seeking citizenship in the Tiger Empire. Brutus, of course, was himself not the most dependable of friends; he called for numerous “ears” knowing well that listening would be a wise strategy in turbulent times. He offered a list of affiliated parties—friends, Romans, and countrymen— suspecting that …
