Egfr Regulation Of Epidermal Barrier Function, Nhu Quynh T. Tran
Egfr Regulation Of Epidermal Barrier Function, Nhu Quynh T. Tran
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Keratinocyte terminal differentiation is the process that ultimately forms the epidermal barrier that is essential for mammals to survive in the ex utero environment. This process is tightly controlled by the expression of many well-characterized genes. Although a few of these genes are known to be regulated by the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), an important regulator of multiple epidermal functions, neither the genome-wide scale of EGFR-mediated regulation nor the mechanisms by which EGFR signaling controls keratinocyte differentiation are well understood. Using microarray analysis we identified 2,676 genes that are regulated by EGF, a ligand of the EGFR. We further …

The proliferation of "-omics" (such as, Genomics, Proteomics) and "-ology" (such as, System Biology, Cell Biology, Pharmacology) have spawned new frontiers of research in drug discovery and personalized medicine. A vast amount (21 million) of published research results are archived in the PubMed and are continually growing in size. To improve the accessibility and utility of such a large number of literatures, it is critical to develop a suit of semantic sensitive technology that is capable of discovering knowledge and can also infer possible new relationships based on statistical co-occurrences of meaningful terms or concepts. In this context, this thesis …
A Dynamic Approach To Pose Invariant Face Identification Using Cellular Simultaneous Recurrent Networks, Teddy Salan
A Dynamic Approach To Pose Invariant Face Identification Using Cellular Simultaneous Recurrent Networks, Teddy Salan
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Face recognition is a widely covered and desirable research field that produced multiple techniques and different approaches. Most of them have severe limitations with pose variations or face rotation. The immediate goal of this thesis is to deal with pose variations by implementing a face recognition system using a Cellular Simultaneous Recurrent Network (CSRN). The CSRN is a novel bio-inspired recurrent neural network that mimics reinforcement learning in the brain. The recognition task is defined as an identification problem on image sequences. The goal is to correctly match a set of unknown pose distorted probe face sequences with a set …

Nearly 60% to 67% of all injuries that occur annually within the US are due to musculoskeletal injuries, with over a million people requiring implants and bone grafting materials to reconstruct bone defects. Our lab has previously developed composite chitosan/nano-hydroxyapatite microsphere based bone grafts that had good compressive strengths, supported bone cell growth and mineralization in vitro, demonstrated biocompatibility and osteoconductivity in a rat calvarial defect model, and when loaded with rhBMP-2 was osteoinductive in a rat muscle pouch model. However, degradation of these scaffolds was very slow which may have limited the amount of new bone formed in vivo. …

Differential Combination Of Cytokine And Interferon- Gamma +874 T/A Polymorphisms Determines Disease Severity In Pulmonary Tuberculosis., Ambreen Ansari, Zahra Hasan, Ghaffar Dawood, Rabia Hussain
Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine
Background:Mycobacterium tuberculosis infects nearly 1/3 of the world population and this reservoir forms the largest pool from which new cases arise. Among the cytokines, IFN-gamma is a key determinant in protection against tuberculosis. Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in IFN-gamma gene (+874 T/A) which determine TT high ((hi)), AA low ((lo)) and TA intermediate ((int)) responder phenotypes have shown variable associations with tuberculosis disease outcome in different ethnic populations. The objective of the current study was to analyze IFN-gamma gene combinations with other IFN-gamma regulating cytokine genes (IL-10, TNF -alpha, IL-6) to see the effect of gene- combinations on disease …

Studies On The Adherence Properties Of Plant Lectins And Bacterial Adhesins And Their Inhibition By Prebiotic Oligosaccharides And Bovine Colostrum Fractions, Maria X. Maldonado-Gomez
Department of Food Science and Technology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
To initiate colonization and infection, most microbial pathogens must first recognize and adhere to cells in the host tissues. Adherence inhibition, therefore, can be used as a strategy for preventing infectious disease. In this research, we developed a simplified model using plant lectins and HEp-2 tissue culture cells to simulate bacterial adhesins-receptors interactions. The effect of lectin ligands and two prebiotic carbohydrates, galactooligosaccharide (GOS) and polydextrose (PDX) was measured with this approach. Lectins that were able to bind to the target cells were inhibited in the presence of the cognate ligands and at least one of the prebiotic carbohydrates. The …

Considering The Consequences Of Child Welfare Service Decisions, Vincent J. Geremia
Journal of Family Strengths
The following commentary serves as a response to the article, “That Wall is Around My Heart,” underscoring the importance of decision making in child welfare services. The commentary supports the need for child welfare systems to carefully consider the long-term consequences of various service intervention strategies. Child welfare systems must attend to both the internal external elements of safety, giving special attention to the emotional trauma of child maltreatment and the trauma resulting from removal and placement in alternative care. The commentary supports the need for child welfare systems to provide effective interventions that prevent and respond to child abuse …

Influence Of Supraglottal Geometry And Modeling Choices On The Flow-Induced Vibration Of A Computational Vocal Fold Model, Timothy E. Shurtz
Theses and Dissertations
Computational models of the flow-induced vibrations of the vocal folds are powerful tools that can be used in conjunction with physical experiments to better understand voice production. This thesis research has been performed to contribute to the understanding of vocal fold dynamics as well as several aspects of computational modeling of the vocal folds. In particular, the effects of supraglottal geometry have been analyzed using a computational model of the vocal folds and laryngeal airway. In addition, three important computational modeling parameters (contact line location, Poisson's ratio, and symmetry assumptions) have been systematically varied to determine their influence on model …
Two-Dimensional Infrared Spectral Signature And Hydration Of The Oxalate Dianion, Daniel G. Kuroda, Robin M. Hochstrasser
Two-Dimensional Infrared Spectral Signature And Hydration Of The Oxalate Dianion, Daniel G. Kuroda, Robin M. Hochstrasser
Faculty Publications
Ultrafast vibrational spectra of the aqueous oxalate ion in the region of its carboxylate asymmetric stretch modes show novel relaxation processes. Two-dimensional infrared vibrational echo spectra and the vibrational dynamics obtained from them along with measurements of the anisotropy decay provide a picture in which the localization of the oxalate vibrational excitation onto the carboxylate groups occurs in ∼450 fs. Molecular dynamics simulations are used to characterize the vibrational dynamics in terms of dihedral angle motion between the two carboxylate planes and solvation dynamics. The localization of the oxalate vibrational excitation onto the carboxylates is induced by the fluctuations in …

The experimental and numerical results of the capillary-force-driven climb of wetting liquid in porous media, which is opposed by the gravity force, are analyzed with respect to the emergence of a multiphase flow front and flow stability of the climbing liquid. Two dynamic characteristics are used: (i) the multiphase flow front thickness as a function of time, and (ii) the capillary number as a function of Bond number, where both numbers are calculated from the harmonic average of pores radii. Throughout the climb, the influence of capillary, gravity, and viscous force variations on the flow behavior is investigated for different …

Thermally Stimulated Luminescence Study Of Vitamin-E Containing Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polyethylene(Uhmwpe), Dereje Nigatu Abdi
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
oxidation degradation of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene(UHMWPE) due to gamma-irradation has been a major concern in total hip and knee joint arthroplasty. Irradiation( gamma or electron beam) is used for sterilization or crosslinking of UHMWPE.However, in the past decade the use of the biocompatible stabilizer alpha-tocopherol (vitamin-E) has been introduced to reduce or eliminate radiation-induced oxidation of UHMWPE. While existing literature contains information about consolidated UHMWPE, we have studied UHMWPEpowder, because it more readily and uniformly reacts with oxygen or air, in an attempt to gain more knowledge about the antioxidative effect of vitamin-E on UHMWPE. In conjunction with electron …

The Effects Of Habitat Fragmentation On Arthropod Biodiversity In Native Canebrakes, Justin James Geise
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Dense stands of Arundinaria gigantea (Walt.) Chapm. or canebrakes werecommon in the southeastern US, but currently are a critically endangered ecosystem with less than 2% of their area remaining. Remnant canebrakes have become fragmented and isolated. In this study, arthropod communities within these canebrake patches and non-cane patches were examined to assess general island biogeography theories.Four patches (>0.5ha; <0.5ha to >0.1ha; <0.1ha; adjacent non cane patch) were selected at four sites in the Mississippi alluvial valley during three collection periods. Measures of diversity, community composition, and functional group organization were compared to determine if differences existed.Diversity measures and functional group organization did not differ among patch sizes. Diversity measures decreased as distance from canebrakes increased. Canebrakes contained many species that were not found in adjacent non-cane patches with almost 97% uncommon to rare. Conservation of canebrakes is necessary to maintain the biodiversity of these uncommon arthropods.
Combined Effect Of Transmembrane Proteins And Cortical Cytoskeleton On The Lateral Organization Of Plasma Membranes, Md Kabir Uddin Sikder
Combined Effect Of Transmembrane Proteins And Cortical Cytoskeleton On The Lateral Organization Of Plasma Membranes, Md Kabir Uddin Sikder
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
The plasma membrane acts as a functional interface between the cytoplasm and the outer environment of a cell. The plasma membrane is composed of different types of lipids and proteins, and is underlined with a cytoskeleton meshwork. The plasma membrane of eukaryotic cell exhibits compositional heterogeneities in the form of nanoscale-lipid domains, called lipid rafts. The domains in model membranes are large micron-scale domains, larger than the nanoscale lipid rafts in the plasma membrane. In the present work, the hypothesis made earlier by Kusumi et al. has been addressed through large scale Langevin molecular dynamics simulations of a model recently …
