This article departs from the observation of accentuated degradation of ecosystems worldwide to stress the urgency in changing the patterns of occupation of the land, production, consumption and the ecological and ethical goals of environmental conservation. Aiming to achieve these ends, this article proposes the acknowledgement of the principle of resilience in international environmental law. The principle of resilience is articulated herein based on the concept of ecological resilience; the values of land ethic; and the existing principles of international environmental law. In the past decade it was demonstrated experimentally that negatively-chirped laser pulses can lower the surface LIDT for wide band-gap materials by decreasing the number of photons required for photoionization on the leading edge of the pulse. Similarly, simulations have shown that positively-chirped pulses resulting from selffocusing and self-phase modulation in bulk dielectrics can alter the onset of laser-induced material modifications by increasing the number of photons required for photoionization on the leading edge of the pulse. Clinical and subclinical eating pathology are common, especially among female undergraduates. Such problems are often chronic and associated with a range of negative medical and psychological outcomes. Thus, it is important to develop effective prevention programs to reduce eating disorder risk. Numerous studies suggest that dissonance-based prevention programs are the most successful in reducing eating disorder risk factors, however, such programs might not be convenient for students limited by scheduling restraints or geographic proximity. To provide a snapshot of the skills of community college students as compared to senior college students, this study investigated writing performance and college experience of initial two-year enrolled (community college transfer students, n = 17) versus initial four-year enrolled students (n = 12) in a teacher preparation program. Results of independent samples t-tests on in-class writing, research paper, and final score were non-significant (p =.28, p = .54, p = .15, respectively) indicating that two-year and four-year start teacher candidates did not differ in their performance on these assignments nor overall in the course. Meadow voles, Microtus pennsylvanicus, are microtine rodents that inhabit grasslands in the temperate zone of northeastern and central North America. During the breeding season, males inhabit large overlapping home ranges that encompass the territories of one or more females. Males and females are promiscuous and males compete with other males for mating opportunities with females. The threat of this competition varies depending on the presence of a rival, the number of rivals, and the quality of a rival. Male and female meadow voles scent mark and conspecifics use the information contained in these scent marks to locate mates and rivals. …

Since the common anaesthetic drug 2,6-diisopropylphenol (propofol) has a narrow physiological range, the administration of this drug could be improved through the development of a feedback-controlled delivery system. An evaluation of several carbon filaments was conducted to determine their capability to serve as the detecting element in such a system. Planar electrochemical cells (PECs) were fabricated with working electrodes made from three carbon filaments: Goodfellow (GF) carbon fibers, 11μm diameter; Bioanalytical Systems (BAS) carbon fibers, 9μm diameter; Specialty Materials (SM) glassy carbon monofilaments, 34.5μm diameter. Metagenomics is the study of microbes in their natural environments without the need for isolation and lab cultivation. The DNA fragments obtained from sequencing of a sample of mixed species requires taxonomic characterization called binning. My research concerns binning of metagenomic data using a novel approach. Each genomic sequence was codified based on their Cistronic Stop Signal Ratio (CSSR) values. Since the genic CSSR values of phylogenetically related organisms often share a definable pattern, a neural network was trained to recognize the genic CSSR patterns of known species.The trained neural network was then used to cluster the CSSR values from …

Many cancer patients are given enteral or parenteral nutrition support because they cannot obtain nutrients orally.Design: This is a qualitative study which examined caregivers', physicans', and nurses' preferred type of nutrition support, feelings toward each type, goals regarding nutrition, and how the medical team could help meet those goals. Over the last decade, small noncoding RNA molecules such as microRNAs (miRNAs) have emerged as critical regulators in the expression and function of eukaryotic genomes. It has been suggested that viral infections and neurological disease outcome may also be shaped by the influence of small RNAs. This has prompted us to suggest that HIV infection alters the endogenous miRNA expression patterns, thereby contributing to neuronal deregulation and AIDS dementia. Three terpenoids, including two diterpenes (curcusone B and jatrophone) and a triterpene (stigmasterol) have been isolated from the stem bark of Jatropha plants. Curcusone B and stigmasterol were isolated from J. curcas, meanwhile jatrophone and stigmasterol were from J. gossypifolia. The biological activities of these compounds have been evaluated toward bacteria, fungi and tumour cells. Isolation was carried out in vacuum liqiud cromatography (VLC) technique with silica gel as an adsorben and some solvents as eluents. Three types of cyclopentanone derivatives have been synthesized from aromatic aldehyde and ketone derivatives under a base condition through aldol condensation. These cyclopentanone products were 2,5-dibenzylidene-cyclopentanone (a), 2,5-bis-(4-hydroxy-benzylidene)-cyclopentanone (b), and 2,5-bis-(4-hydroxy-benzylidene)-cyclopentanone (c) which has a yield of 63-99%. The chemical structure of these compounds were determined using UV, IR and NMR spectroscopy. In order to clarify the role of hydroxyl and amine moieties, toxic, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities were carried out. The toxic test indicated that the compounds showed strong toxicity. The combination of depot medroxy progesterone acetate (DMPA) + extract of Javanese long pepper (JLP) with dosages of 0.94 mg and 1.88 mg decreases the concentration of spermatozoa. In the present study, the use of ultrasound to extract oleoresin from ginger (Zingiber officinale R.) was investigated. Fold recognition techniques take advantage of the limited number of overall structural organizations, and have become increasingly effective at identifying the fold of a given target sequence. However, in the absence of sufficient sequence identity, it remains difficult for fold recognition methods to always select the correct model. While a native-like model is often among a pool of highly ranked models, it is not necessarily the highest-ranked one, and the model rankings depend sensitively on the scoring function used. Structure elucidation methods can then be employed to decide among the models based on relatively rapid biochemical/biophysical experiments.

This exploratory study used semi-structured focus groups to examine: 1) where and from whom fathers obtain information about parenting; 2) the types of parenting services men are aware of, and their attitudes about participating in such services; and 3) fathers’ perceived norms about the acceptability and utility of various parenting practices. Low-income men (N = 17) were recruited from a human services agency in Detroit, Michigan. Four major themes emerged. First was the need for male-focused community resources for fathers. The focus of this research was to determine the impact of family stressors on the social development of adolescents at admission to long-term mental health residential care. The study was conducted at the Waco Center for Youth, the only long-term residential care agency serving emotionally and behaviorally challenged adolescents and their families that functions under the authority of the Texas Department of State Health Services. Data was obtained from social assessment forms (N=457) in case records of clients. This article describes the development and implementation of a regional forum in a rural community to address education and training needs of families and professionals. The Special Needs Summit provided workshops, information, and activities for parents and professionals. The phenomenon of grandparents and other relatives raising children is a tradition rooted in the African American culture. However, a substantial increase in the number of relatives raising children has drawn attention to the child welfare system. Many of the biological parents are incarcerated for drugs or suffering from other social ills. Kinship care is an important component of family preservation and prevents court intervention based on child protection concerns and avoids formal placement of children in the child welfare system (Wilkerson, 1999).
